This is what happens when you let Tom Mankiewicz do your script writing for you, he gives you scenes like this and helps take your franchise in a new direction. When you look at Diamonds Are Forever and then this film you can see how his script writing brought the Bond films to that next level in humor, drama, tone and storytelling in fact all of the Bond films that Mankiewicz had a part in after this, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker marked some of the best Bond films in the series. No wonder Richard Donner chose him to help him with Superman.
Diamonds are Forever is a bit of a miss in quite a few areas but I have a soft spot for it, and what can’t be denied about that film is Tom’s dialogue is excellent, witty and sharp. This was his best contribution to the series, and one of the best Bond films overall partly because of it. I think the only one he really dropped the ball on was The Man With The Golden Gun, that was just poor.
Tom Mankiewicz wrote the scene having Bond use his magnetic watch to successfully get the boat and escape, during shooting the director thought that seemed way to easy and felt it totally lacked tension, the owner of the Croc farm who's real name was Kananga suggested the skipping over the crocs escape route which the Director loved but was skeptical as to how they could actually shoot it without a stunt man getting his legs bitten off! In the end Kananga himself performed the stunt, it took him five takes and 193 stitches in his leg after a croc got him in one of the attempts.....they kept in the scene where Bond tries to get the boat , but fails as it is tied up with a rope.
"There are two ways to disable a crocodile, you know." "I don't suppose you'd care to share that information with me?" There are a lot of classic Bond moments and this is definatley one of them. When Roger Moore took over from Sean Connery in Live and Let Die he was again an excellent Bond. This scene was brilliant. 007 has been tricked onto a small island in a pool filled with crocodiles. He can see they have their eye on him as their next meal so he must do something quickly to get out of this! He spots an exit at the side of the pool but its at great risk he goes for it. But when he sees a path of crocodiles ahead of him he goes for it! Classic Bond moment! 007 gets out of a trap all over again!
