I should add that many furniture artists I admire are great with pure chalk paint, I am not though 😂 so I stick with my 1 step paint recipe, or hardware store type paints (acrylic based) and enamel paints. This recipe does have chalk in it, but such a small amount that I don’t encounter the struggles I did early in my career with full on chalk paints. ✌️ ❤️
By adding calcium carbonate to your paint mixture you turned it into chalk paint. Calcium carbonate is chalk. I will try the recipe though since it means not adding extra layers to the piece. Nicely done makeover.
Hello I'm a seventy-two-year-old great-grandmother I love watching what you do I like the way you cut the bottom scalloped off and made it look more modern that was a real slick little trick you did there I really like that I used to do furniture and I'd never never thought about doing something like that anyway you're doing a good job keep up the good work I love watching you
Omg, you just rocked my world with your “all in one” paint hack. I’m not lazy, but I don’t want to have to do three steps to get a beautifully painted and finished piece…..time is of the essence 😊. I also create my own chalk paint with calcium carbonate so this is a real game changer for me.
I've watched this video before, but didn't really get a good look at the piece. The shape of it is GORGEOUS even before the make over. The bones are gorgeous!!
I am so blessed to see this video. It is literally an answer to prayer. It popped up on UA-cam this morning after praying for direction on what furniture to take with me when I downsize to a smaller house after being widowed a year ago. I have the exact dresser and never dreamed of painting it and don't like the curve on the bottom. Love how you cut that part off! Thanks for the simplicity.
I rarely comment but I have to say, I am SO IMPRESSED with your videos! I follow a few bloggers and you, by far, have the best tutorials and techniques! Love ! Love! Love! Jeep up the fabulous work! Also the before and after are stunning! Thank you! 💜💜💜 Happy Valentines 💝 Day!
I’m so obsessed with your videos, im planning on flipping my daughters childhood bedroom and your videos are really helping me to not be afraid and go for it…thanks, you’re so good at explaining and really appreciate sharing your knowledge ❤️
Start with something you like but won't stress about if it's messed up...and use mostly (if you can) what you have on hand, because starting is the hardest part. Try different painting and finishing techniques on different areas to find out which one you like best. Then, do it. If you don't like it try something else over the top. The more you do the more creative you will become. The action alone gets the creative juices flowing. Good luck!
Once again, amazing transformation! one has to be a visionary when flipping furniture, and you are definitely a master at envisioning these oldies, they were really well made furniture and deserve to shine again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So glad to see someone that doesn't just chalk paint constantly!!! I think that some pieces are great chalk painted, but don't prefer it myself, at all. Thank you.
The transformation is so impressive. You turn something you might be a little embarrassed over into a conversation piece worth bragging about. Just beautiful, thank you for publishing.
Boy that turned out so modern and sooo beautiful! Love watching your precious dog and daughter pop into the videos. I definitely see a future creative DIYer in your daughter,
🤷♀️I know ......right. I’ve been painting furniture for about a year now and for the past 4 months I have used your recipe and love my job soooo much more. Thanks for the recipe 🤗👩🎨
Greetings from the UK! I could watch your videos all day, thank you for being so genuine and sharing your skill and expertise, very educational and much appreciated!
Hi Shannon, the color you chose is beautiful and the reshaped bottom trim is perfect. Styling with baskets and matching hardware really updates the look. And who doesn't love a little helping hand with hardware decisions! Great work.🌷🌷
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, whether it is old hardware refurbished or newer ( modern/abstract looking) style which seems to be what's in at the moment, old style can be beautiful and so is the newer abstract type looking furniture.
Thanks Shannon for taking the time to create this content. Because I can’t afford new, I’m on a mission to paint all my old stuff. Started this weekend using your paint recipe on a fiddly carved coffee table. It did lighten up my base color but fortunately i had also bought some Waverly chalk paint (Walmart) in various shades. One of them was the perfect color to deepen the mix to the shade of the original color. I tell you this because the most important thing I’ve learned from you is to be brave and just get started. 🤓. I can’t wait to move on to some of my uncarved pieces to use the roller technique but your paint formula is quite self leveling. Thanks again!!!

I am so glad you said that about the hardware. That is one of my pet peeves. Doesn’t matter how much you did to the piece if the hardware is not updated.
I had this exact dresser until just recently. I believe it was sold exclusively at Sears. It was part of a bedroom set and had a mirrored hutch on top. I bought mine in the mid to late 1970's. Very impressed with the transformation.
That piece turned out so beautifully. The color is gorgeous, the baskets are an unexpected element that add a lot of interest. Seriously, great job. I love that you’re so generous in your content. I’m going to try the one step paint recipe, it seems so easy and it definitely will save money.
This is the first of your videos I’ve watched and I’m only a few minutes in, but I’m already so impressed by you and feel I’ve learned quite a bit compared to other furniture flippers. I’m impressed! Can’t wait to see more.
Love the color and the sheen it looks so smooth and velvety and the handles are just beautiful with it, I love the contrast of the wood and the paint and the baskets it all looks great
I am so glad you said perfection isn't a key component! I agree 100%. One reason I haven't done resale is because I hate perfection. Wish me luck on my new endeavor and thanks for all your wonderful tips❤
I used this painting technique for the first time on our kitchen cabinet doors with Fusion Mineral Paint (because it's what we had). The technique was amazing and I was able to achieve a smooth finish for the first time without having to use a paint sprayer. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks for sharing your recipe. Though I do like old hardware, I think what you chose works well with the new squared- off bottom (that was clever and brave)! Looks great!
I just across your videos recently and love your one step paint and seeing your furniture make overs. I had to chuckle when I heard you call Pampas grass, Pompas grass. that's exactly what my late mother called it. lol
I love this result it looks beautiful. I've been adding calcium carbonate to paints for years to kind of make my own chalk type but not quite so chalky paint. I add it to matt wall paint, water based satinwood anything really even exterior paints. I run it through an old food processor to get it really smooth first:) BUT I always do at least one Zinsser bullseye 123 primer coat, sand between coats and follow up finally with a matt water based varnish I did once use an oil based top coat as they are harder wearing but they yellow very quickly and are a no no on lighter shades I learned the hard way and had to sand it all off and re do it! I never thought to mix all three components together - that could be a game changer. I have used Zinssers All Coat Exterior which is very good I painted my greenhouse black with that and it's stuck like glue so that's an impressive paint and we had -11c temps recently for days on end and that hasn't budged but I did prime it first with bullseye, it's been covered in snow and it rains a lot here (UK). I have to try this recipe of yours to see if it's as resilient as layering, thank you for sharing if it works for me when I do a little scratch test sample you just saved me hours of work - days even! How long would you say to leave it to cure? Thanks again for sharing
Wow it’s beautiful! You def have the creative eye because it looks so good with that open space where the door was! Thanks for going so slow and step by step. Also “chalk paint is the devil” 😂 love it
I cannot wait to try this paint recipie. I usually work with raw wood but happened upon a dresser similar to the one you did here damage and all. I'm also going to cut that dated scalloped bottom off, nice hack by the way! I really enjoy watching your creativity. Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to share all of this valuable information! I appreciate you!!! It's wonderful that you are so willing to help us all learn through your journey. Thank you!!!
I love the result, your work is always excellent. I learned something from you long ago (laying paint on with a brush, then rolling it). For the right colors, on a large expanse with one color, this is a GREAT technique! Thank you for that! So, I wonder why you say you hate chalk paint when you are actually making your own (adding calcium carbonate)? Perhaps you just like your 'own' chalk paint. Maybe you should start your own line BLACK SHEEP PAINT! As always, I love your work - beautiful. :)
Loved this look. It gave me the perfect idea for a piece I have that is very similar. Thank you sooooo much. Now I’m ready to charge ahead with my project!
OMG, I love this!!! This is one of my favorite flips you have done. I am with you on the chalk paint. I didn't really have the same issues, but I found, even with it being very protected, I had to go do touch ups for clients. No thanks! LOL I am so going to replicate this look. So simply elegant.
Yes, I had that issue a few times too when I was doing chalk/wax 😭 let me know if you try this recipe and how you think it compares to the enamel paint you use! I have been using valspar furniture and cabinet enamel and liking it for heavy duty stuff and def feel like enamel is stronger but also too shiny/plastic looking sometimes for certain things I really want super matte ya know. Seriously though, let me know how the recipe performs for you 👏
I totally agree with the hardware situation! I’m so lazy! sometimes and I just spray the old hardware because I hate making new holes.🤣 Amazon is not longer 2 day delivery more like 2 weeks for me so that doesn’t push me to get new hardware either.
It’s so nice to come across a furniture finisher that hates chalk paint. It’s an awful paint to work with. My preference is Fusion Mineral paint. Thank you so much for sharing your paint formula, I can’t wait to try it. This is a beautiful furniture project. Many thanks from Toronto 👍😊🇨🇦
When you add calcium carbonate to the paint, it makes chalk paint...it's pretty much all I've ever worked with and it's great for the distressed look and very forgiving. I love your idea of mixing poly etc. And I love the finished look. I live in an area that to consign this stuff is just not doable and consignment shops want 50% I'm not going to give my work away but it never occurred to me to go to some designers and offer my services. That is the best takeaway from watching this video. Thank you so much!
I like all of your videos and have learned a lot. Good reminder about the hardware I really have to work on that! I do respect your view however saying chalk paint is the devil is kind of over the top … I’ve been using chalk style paints for years and so have many people I know and have created some beautiful quality pieces that have sold! No streakiness but smooth soft finishes. And it really goes a long way if you use it correctly. Allowing it to cure, makes it very durable! You’re entitled to your opinion; I only point this out because I wouldn’t want furniture painters to start doubting themselves or their work! 💕
ok this is an older video, but i did recently do my version of your 1 step paint- I used some older grey paint latex, grey, added a cup of each primer, paint and semi gloss polyurethane. I used baby powder and baking soda, did get a chalk finish,. However texture. I sanded between 3 coats. Ended up with a washed look. I am liking it. Going to seal it with minwax paste wax. I have that on hand. Keeping the peice, so we'll see how it holds up in the kitchen area. Appreciate your sharing, Me in the experimental stage. I am getting to the point where I am with you on the chalk paint. Brush strokes, thick, and uneven.
I am also anti chalk paint. When I first started painting furniture I kept hearing how good it was because you don’t need primer, but it made my projects so difficult - other paints are so much easier to work with than chalk paint.
I'm so happy to have found your channel, you are amazing!! I have many tables and other things to restore and I hope that with your guidance I can learn and do a great job... And maybe some money down the road! Thank you for posting all this.
This turned out very nice. It's been a long day and watching your video was very relaxing. I picked up a dresser today and looking for ideas. I love this.
I was confused by your comments about the hardware , until you said you have links. Hardware is subjective and some people like the idea of their cabinets being traditional, especially if you take way the character of the wood with paint. Updating it and keeping it clean, with the paint, but then restoring and keeping the hardware can make it less ikea, and more unique. Not everyone wants bland modern, so really it depends on what market you are flipping for. Curves in furniture are more expensive for a reason, hence why the further up the financial ladder you go, the more of them you see, so it really hurt to see the scalloped edge get hacked off too :) Each to their own.
Brilliant job ❤ and thank you and your beautiful daughter ❤️ for all the details with the paint I have loads of paint left overs and and waste. I will give this a go. I'm in the uk and we Don't have as much choice is you have in the USA so lucky. I can get the stuff you use in the uk. Amazon is great for the handles but I haven't seen the one your using there great. Thank you . ❤️
my gosh that seems like sooo much work when there are some All IN ONE paints out there.. are you saving $? this way . and you can't get the color you would want with all that additives changing the paint color. you just have to go with whatever it comes out like.. the finish result is fantastic.. love it!!
I should add that many furniture artists I admire are great with pure chalk paint, I am not though 😂 so I stick with my 1 step paint recipe, or hardware store type paints (acrylic based) and enamel paints. ok this is an older video, but i did recently do my version of your 1 step paint- I used some older grey paint latex, grey, added a cup of each primer, paint and semi gloss polyurethane.
So beautiful!! I cannot wait to find a piece just like this one to flip this way!! Love it!! 👏🏼❤️
Lovely. I appreciate your honesty about chalk paint
I am also anti chalk paint. When I first started painting furniture I kept hearing how good it was because you don’t need primer, but it made my projects so difficult - other paints are so much easier to work with than chalk paint.
Can you explain by what you mean "more difficult"? Unfortunately I just bought chalk paint to do my flips. :(
I'm so happy to have found your channel, you are amazing!!
I have many tables and other things to restore and I hope that with your guidance I can learn and do a great job... And maybe some money down the road!
Thank you for posting all this.
This turned out very nice. Thanks for tips on the paint mixture.
Very pretty, I like how that came out. I would have never thought you could save that dresser as it was pretty rough. Beautifully done!
Thank you . ❤️
Great job. The hardware choice was brilliant.
love the color and the look. thanks for sharing.
Sis said it’s the devil. 😂😂😂. I love how real you are. Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. You do absolutely beautiful work.
Beautiful transformation. If that dresser was for sale, I would buy it in a 💗 beat.
The color you created is sooo pretty! I love it
my gosh that seems like sooo much work when there are some All IN ONE paints out there.. are you saving $? this way . and you can't get the color you would want with all that additives changing the paint color. you just have to go with whatever it comes out like.. the finish result is fantastic.. love it!!
Nicely done. Love the colour you chose.
Beautiful, doesn't look like the same piece, nice color as well.
