Summary:
Between 1982 and 1988, few bands worked harder than Huey Lewis Lewis and The News. Although the group was made up of seasoned vets, it wasn't until the breakout success of "Do You Believe In Love," a song from their second album, that they began receiving attention outside their home base of San Francisco. Over the coarse of the next six years, the group would perfect their blend of good time rock & roll music, infused with the soul and doo-wop influences of their youth. They would score big with three consecutive platinum albums and an impressive list of hit singles, including three number ones on the Billboard charts. Relentless touring and high rotation exposure on MTV would eventually pay off and the group would become a national headlining act capable of filling the biggest arenas in America.
In 1989 the group finally took some well-deserved time off from their touring and recording schedules with one notable exception. In May of 1989, Bill Graham presented a series of benefit concerts in multiple venues to raise awareness about AIDS and fund research and care for those afflicted in the Bay Area. Huey Lewis and The News took part in this "In Concert Against AIDS" series with a memorable one-off club performance at Slim's in San Francisco, which would not only be their first gig in over four months, but their first club gig in years.
Presented in its entirety, here is that performance. Surrounded by family, friends and a hometown audience, this intimate club gig has it all, including the group's biggest hits and a choice selection of covers. At one point, American Pro Bowl wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, Dwight Clark, joins the group onstage, lending his voice to the doo-wop classic "Working In A Cold Mine." Mark Russo, renowned for his saxophone work with Tower Of Power and The Yellowjackets, also joins in on the final half hour of this remarkable performance.
Huey Lewis and The News belongs in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
Without a doubt.
Chris Hayes is a pure, undiluted rock-n-roll guitar player. One of my favorites.
Is Chris Hayes still playing guitar? How old is he now please?
One of the most criminally underrated drummers in the last 40 years of rock.
Sounds like all of the band members are underrated.
Absolutely
I think so
Rock solid with great swing.
Never get tired of this song. You just heard the news.
That transition from the Purple Haze riff to the song was amazing.
Incredible rhythmic unison while the tenor sax guy is singing octaves to Huey's syncopated and back phrased vocal melody. That's some detailed arranging and most importantly, some good practice! These guys are just plain old good, practiced musicians who have worked hard to make it all sound so casual.
Thanks Huey and the boys for all your great vox harmonies.
I noticed that too, it's extremely hard to sing along with because the timing nuances are so select…
Always enjoy chris’s guitar playing.... very disciplined and professional, never overplays.
He rocks the mullet too.
So tasteful, not gratuitous
Absolutely
Overlooked player. He’s great
Chris Hayes is underrated.
Dont think so...always thought of as brilliant !
The bass player with the heater in his mouth is priceless!
The bassist, Mario Cipollina, could pass for Agent Smith from "The Matrix."
I think he is Smith himself incognito
In a failure in the Matrix
True talent.
Nice!
What are you doing here STEVE 😅 and yeah it's true. This is true talent.
Holy crap! Huey managed to get a big smile out of Mario. That's the first time I've ever seen him smile.
They are always so damn good. This band definitely deserves to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! And, why aren't they in there yet? 😡
Who needs the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anyway?
Politics
They’re no Dolly Parton.....
@@rodeo11 😆 😂
Agree, it's mindboggling that they are not there yet!
Chris is a VERY underrated guitarist. I have never seen him play the intro the same way twice.
BradentonSlick I agree...He isn't main stream because he never dressed crazy like a pimp and just wore regular clothes. They all did...Huey and the News have always been a bit underrated though...A bit like The Eagles.
I agree with both ya.. If i listen to a lot of the "hairbands" ... MANY times I just have to spend a lot of time at the end of the day trying to wash all the CHEESE off me.. Yea. Not with these guys here.
And the best guitar face!
You do realize that he grew up training as a classical guitarist and hated guitars being played on rock songs, don't you? I can't remember the epiphany he had that brought him over "to the dark side" but in my books, he's extremely capable playing down, as it were, to playing rock guitar.
@@danielfronc4304 interesting fact.. i bet you also know, that Randy Rhoads himself, near the end, was VERY frustrated with ROCK, and was taking classic guitar lessons whenever he could.. of course in those lessons, he probably was teaching the TEACHERS a lot.. from what i gathered.. songs like Revelation Mother Earth, or Dee, others.. he was good there
Fantastic performance - takes me right back to the 80s.
I love the moment at 5:47 when the base player cracks up and just can't keep a straight face anymore
The Man on Bass .............Great! Great Bass Lines. I love this Band!
This live performance is so damn tight!
Look like they are having so much fun together. It’s beautiful
Rock and roll can save the world❤
Chris Hayes on that guitar is badass.
This song grabs me because I served in Vietnam in 1968 and 69 as a combat infantry soldier in the Mekong Delta. The words bring the fight right back to me. When I came home many of the friends I went to school with ignored me like I had the plague. Thanks Huey for your support!
Sir, you are a true hero!! The "Welcome Home" party wasn't what you'd expected. If I would have been there, along side of you, I would have made DM SURE that ALL of you coming home, would have had a PROPER "Welcome HOME" party!!
To you, and your family,
I SALUTE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!
If there's somethin' strange, in the neighborhood, who you gonna call...HUEY LEWIS 😜
IKR I can't believe they had to settle out of court! HE stole that shit!!! LONG LIVE THE NEWS!!!
Damn I know man... Ghostbusters copied this sond and they had to pay a lot of money for that
Indeed thanks for your help with this matter 🔭
Chris Hayes is fantastic!
Chris Hayes was fantastic on that guitar,I have heard of Huey Lewis and The News when I was younger in the 80's. Now I am older I think Chris was so handsome when he was younger. Is he married with a family?
@@BrianKitching-wv5nh I went to see them at Wembley Area in London in the late eighties. They kept doing encore after encore. They were great. I don’t know about Chris Hayes’ marital status😊
The Kid..... The man. Chris Hayes
yeah I remember him as the kid! he looked like a little boy when they started.
Unbelievable! There were none better than these guys! You can count on one hand the amount of performers, single acts or bands that can nail it like a recording live on stage!
Highly underrated
Hahaaa, during Mario's 'solo', the fans were blowin right at him...making the dangling smoke, snoke, waft right into his face! He just cracked up and kept hammering the beat...What a trooper!! Hard to work and smoke at the same time! All the Best to Mario and the boys!!
He said in interviews available on UA-cam that a manager advised him to adopt that persona on-stage after seeing him behave like that off-stage. Considering that he got kicked out of the band I wonder if he took it too far.
He mentioned that he played with the band again in 2008 but was asked to drop the Mario "character" or not come back.
Great Band and Chris Hayes is the Man !!
Absolutely
Huey Lewis and the News ( the 1980's decade's line --- up or band mates or band members ) are : the legendary Huey Lewis --- lead vocals and harmonica called and also known as " mouth organ " the incredible Bill Gibson --- drums and percussion the gifted Chris Hayes --- lead guitar, background vocals and rhythm guitar the great Sean Hopper --- keyboards and background vocals the amazing Johnny Colla --- saxophone, background vocals and also rhythm guitar the talented Mario Cipollina --- bass guitar
I had always said I wished these guys were invited to play the half time show at the super bowl. They'd be way better than most of the crap they have.
Amen to that!!!!
By a long shot!!!
They sang the star spangled banner before a world series game. Best I ever heard. Must have been before the earthquake game in SF.
The crap we just seen this year was definitely not music. I knew one song kinda because I believe it was used in a commercial. Other than that terrible and disgusting.
Chris Hayes. One of the greatest of all time.
Absolutely
I love tuning into these guys when I'm feeling bored...They are the most uplifting band ever invented. Thanks for such outstanding entertainment both on stage and via your music videos :-}
Huey n the News accomplished musicians fr Sax to drums n guitars.. bass and HARMONIES.. SO AMAZING LIVE.. CLEAN AND GROOVY.
Chris Hayes is beyond ....
Absolutely
Favorite group of all time.
The guy on the sax in the center is Marc Russo, who was part of the Tower of Power horn section (who toured with Huey Lewis for a while), has played with the Yellowjackets. Little known facts for little known people!
Thank you for that; I was trying so hard to find out who that guest player was!
Marc and I grew up in the east bay are during the early 70's and went to rival high schools. We played in show orchestras at the old Civic Arts Theatre in Walnut Creek around '73. He was a wild, crazy guy but a really good player and cool cat. I used to call him "Caveman Marc". Later he toured with Kenny Loggins after TOP and The Jackets. Haven't talked to him since around '87. Hope he is still doing ok.
And current main saxophonist for the Doobie Brothers!
I guess I'm not too old (73) to learn something new - thanx! @@rrob268
Huey and the entire band always had fun performing live. Looked happy too. They play so damn good. Perfect timing of everything. These guys are very talented!
Incredible concert...all were terrific, but that guitar....oh mama!
On yes yes
I saw these guys in a sold out show back in '85 or '86. Huey had laryngitis but he gave it his all anyway. They were absolutely great that night. Very good band.
Saw them at Potsdam college back in the day™ They we're great... and the the girls loved them... I was happy to see them before they went nation wide celebrity status...
Man, this is what it's all about!
Damn that man can play.
What a great band. Way underrated
Greaaaat guitar tone
CHRIS and MARIO!!!!!!!!!! You ROCK!
:)

They were my first concert . I saw them in 1985 in Baltimore. Power of love had just came out and was huge. Great show.
Get well soon Huey ! 2018.
These Guys "Drip Class"! SMOOTH!
One of the best from a great era in music
I 💓 me some. Huey! Could listen alll day😊
This guy is almost 70 yrs old now , time flies.
Hes 70 and I'm 50, I guess we are all aging,I was 12 when Power of Love came out.
How time flies but the great music lives on wthe memories.
@@susan-hr3xc I'm almost 55 😟
I love this group! They were the first concert I took my young sons to and told them "this is music".
Saw HLN back in '87 at Notre Dame. Brought down the house.
This is a great song! But it wouldn't have been as well known and such a hit if it were not for the exceptional guitar work of Chris Hayes. I was never a huge HL fan, but this tune got my attention because of the lead guitar! Awesome.
My all time favorite
KILLA !!! There's another version where Chris Hayes is on stage alone and plays a 5 - 10 minute lead in solo to New Drug. Absolutely amazing.
have seen these guys in concert 5 times. Live, this song always blows the roof off.
OH YA I REMEMBER THESE GUYS GOOD OLE 80S STRAIGHTENED MY ACT OUT IN 81 BEEN GOOD EVER SINSE
Mario Ccipolina feeling!!!!
Mario's bass playing is so cool !
I love these guys. Great lyrics
Uncle Huey lol
40 years ago today, Sports came out. Really came into their own, both commercially and artistically
Einfach nur geil
Von horst. Meine beste Zeit
They were AWESOME!
It is a crime that Huey Lewis and The News are not in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. WTH??
The lead player is just insanely great but they are a great band
I love HLN always mesmerized how Mario could play and smoke a cigarette at the same time!
Still just such a great song
Chris Hayes plays his lines with a dedication and feeling that puts him in a stratosphere of his own making. I’ve not been so moved by a guitar player since I first heard Mike Bloomfield play in 1967 with The Electric Flag.
One of the best songs ever Concocted & pulled off
Awesome!!!
No quisiera morir sin verlos en Buenos Aires... Por favorrr!!!
El ya tiene 69 años.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HUEY!
Absolutely incredible performance
These guys sound better live than recorded/ produced……outstanding!
Great song
I love you ahuehuete, what great time to have lived through this great music era!!!!!! N❤
Still hits hard
One of the tightest bands you will ever hear. They were hyper talented musicians. Huey was magnetic…..the songs were so catchy. the performance was gifted and novel…..very missed today.
I want a New drug!!! ♥️ Is My favorite song! ♥️
How polished was that, fantastic, thanks for the upload.
SOOOOOO MUCH YEESSSSSS!!!!!!
After finding out that Mario is actually capable of awesome bass guitar solos and was kicked out of the band in '95, I'm disappointed that he didn't do a solo in this clip.
Yeah he did do a solo. Starts at about 5:00, ends around 5:50. Mario was playing by himself, making this a solo performance.
I think he was meant to do a solo since Huey seems to mention him and then give him the stage
Brilliant song and album!
Wtf is the matter with the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame? Huey Lewis and the News definitely belong in the Hall of Fame! And, they're not in there. 😠😠😠😠😠
They are fucking tight!
Cool stuff - loooove it :)
Super underrated guitarist
I miss my dad. He loved these guys.
This is one of the coolest songs ever!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, Chris is the man! The group lost a good part of its dynamic when he and Mario left.
borderking59 I totally agree with you
borderking59 yes they did.
You have to respect Chris, he chose to leave to be with his wife and kids. I'm sure Huey and the band are still best friends with him.
I totally agree!
Yes....there was a time with Chris and Mario and there is a time after...
Not bad but not the same unfortunately
Mario's like "huh?"
❤ 🎉 Insanely good 😊 happy birthday Huey!!
Total jam…..
asked for one these drugs .. Today this was fun uplifting jams
Great opening!
A true band with great talent that make many pale .
Whoever down-voted this video needs sack-punched.
Why are they not on regular rotation on classic radio? Such a great band.
Johnny ( ramistella) rivers for the rock & roll hall of fame!
Sports was probably the most played album of mine in the 80s. Such a great album!
