Summary:
Between 1982 and 1988, few bands worked harder than Huey Lewis Lewis and The News. Although the group was made up of seasoned vets, it wasn't until the breakout success of "Do You Believe In Love," a song from their second album, that they began receiving attention outside their home base of San Francisco. Over the coarse of the next six years, the group would perfect their blend of good time rock & roll music, infused with the soul and doo-wop influences of their youth. They would score big with three consecutive platinum albums and an impressive list of hit singles, including three number ones on the Billboard charts. Relentless touring and high rotation exposure on MTV would eventually pay off and the group would become a national headlining act capable of filling the biggest arenas in America.
In 1989 the group finally took some well-deserved time off from their touring and recording schedules with one notable exception. In May of 1989, Bill Graham presented a series of benefit concerts in multiple venues to raise awareness about AIDS and fund research and care for those afflicted in the Bay Area. Huey Lewis and The News took part in this "In Concert Against AIDS" series with a memorable one-off club performance at Slim's in San Francisco, which would not only be their first gig in over four months, but their first club gig in years.
Presented in its entirety, here is that performance. Surrounded by family, friends and a hometown audience, this intimate club gig has it all, including the group's biggest hits and a choice selection of covers. At one point, American Pro Bowl wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, Dwight Clark, joins the group onstage, lending his voice to the doo-wop classic "Working In A Cold Mine." Mark Russo, renowned for his saxophone work with Tower Of Power and The Yellowjackets, also joins in on the final half hour of this remarkable performance.
HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS:THAT´S PURE ROCK´N´ROLL!
Mahn that drummer is SOLID!!!
2024 I’m 73 years old and just discovering Huey Lewis and the news music. I really love it ❤
Agreed.Huey Lewis is a brilliant band. You can understand what they're singing unlike most pop stars today
Huey and the news was huge in the 80s and Men at Work.Favorites from the80s.😂
Huey Lewis is one of the most easily recognizable voices in the music industry. Unique, distinct, powerful and truly the voice of rock and roll.
Yes Sir, VC ! I hope I never see me , or Huey vomit Confietti !!!!

YES!
Saw and met Huey back in the 70s when he was touring UK as a member of Clover. Loved him then, loved him ever since. Top, top man and always gives a nod to the late great Philip Parris Lynott. ❤
I love Huey's music.Shame he went deaf.Hope one day they can fix his hearing then he can perform again
Huey's music always makes us feel good. Good luck with your health, my friend.
We had the best music 1960, 70's, 80s!!!!!!
De todas maneras
Realmente extraordinarios
Aún hoy están tocando
Si vinieran a Chile
No me los pierdo.
My lovely boyfriend and now husband of 25 yrs gifted me a trip to Newport, Wales to see my fave band from the USA play. Huey Lewis and the News came to Wales! and made my life complete. Awesome music and lyrics so smoothly executed. Love to listen to this especially during Covid.
he's a great singer 🎤🥁👍🧑💼😁
This brings tears to my eyes, remembering not just a better day, but a time when really good bands could give you a gift of making your day just a little bit better.
💯💯💯
Yes thank you same to me Roland from Germany Berlin Lost in love in California by this music !!!
Real musicians. The total package. Thanks for the memories.
Check out Lexington Lab band song catalog! They’re mind blowing awesome many great old songs
I loved Huey Lewis, shame he went deaf from Mienere's disease.Hopefully,he can find a cure and then he can go on tour again
You & the band are one of the greatest. I love the concert “Dancng in the Moonlight” in 2012. I just watched it in 2023. The best artists ever. Timeless. Thank you.
Their mullet game is solid af.
Lol....INDEED!
And the best mullet game in the world!
That's because when they are playing they're all business, and when they're done they leave the party behind them.
The wind makes them majestic.
This made me so happy! They are so great!
There ain't no real music like this today . 7/24/2023 .
this is a Jam all the way through again thanks Huey Lewis and The News
Anyone watching it 2021 ?! Oldies goldies
Just got blowed away by the sax solo!
Will always love these guys......always!!!
Lets Go Get Stoned what an awesome tune....... Thanks Huey.............
One of the best venues for great concerts!! I ran into Huey Lewis during these years at the Boot Barn in the valley of Los Angeles and he was standing next to me at the cash register and he was really tall and very ruggedly handsome. I bought a pair of Black Nocona cowboy boots and called them my Huey boots because of that experience. I’ve been to a lot of concerts, but I’ve never been able to see Huey Lewis and now he’s not performing anymore because he has major hearing loss!
Really, read your you tube comment on heuy Lewis, what was he like, was he nice to you?
Always dug their music but it wasn't until I saw them perform at Mountain Aire festival back in 87 and was completely blown away. Mad respect. These guys were musicians for musicians
The world needs more music like this today!
Still do
@@lise-lottelundroeddik4706 Yup.
GD straight!
Thank you. Huey was a favorite musician of mine in the best decade of my life. Seems like all the good stuff happened in that tiny ten year span.
People don't realize how difficult it is to play this clean, nail the vocals while playing...These guys harmonize as good as any band..No pro tools...no auto pitch,no tape loops playing...The sound itself is clear, mixed just right..Nothing too loud, you can focus on any one player..Amazing job...
Couldn’t of said it better myself. It’s called the fine art of subtle, taste and true authentic. Not all e money in the world could buy that! Truest special gift
Back when people had to actually be talented to become a famous musician. Now all you need is autotune, a plastic smile, and some stupid looking clothes that covers everything but your privates that noone in their right mind would ever wear in public or anywhere else for that matter. In fact you almost have to have those things now or your standards arent low enough to make it. Talent has taken a back seat to shock value and computer generated or at least assisted garbage.
In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square." A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.
They were a great band. Very underrated in my opinion
This quote is from "American Psycho" for those who didn't get it. ;)
How could anyone down vote this? Huey sounds exactly as he does on the recordings. No lip syncing, no auto tune, just pure rock and roll. And the rest of the band is just as genuine. A highly under-rated band.
I WUZ BORN TO DOWNVOTE.
These guys should be 1st ballot HOFers.
Actually, live music isn't supposed to sound like recorded music. You got it backwards. Recorded music is basically a short sampling of the real art not the other way around. Maybe you're to young to remember 45's but if you ever expected The Beatles to sound the same live as they did on a 2:20 45 record, you didn't get it. The whole point in going to see Bruce Springsteen live is to experience the real art of music. Good thing you weren't around during Beethoven's time. All they had back then was LIVE.
THIS IS 100 TIMES BETTER THAN ANY STUDIO RECORDING. Get with the program.
179 negative votes, 4,800 positive votes is
First of all it' s a matter of taste.
I' m not a fan of the News because their music is too even, too glossy and too designed, typical 80's mainstream poprock.
Great musicians, no doubt but I don' t want a studio sound on stage.
This wonderful man and his band could lift my days when they were the darkest. Thank you all for playing this for us! What a fun, uplifting show for everyone. Huey has always been so inspiring to me. Lived everything he recorded. Thank God for his style of music and great joy he has given to us. We are so blessed. Love you, Huey. I hope everyone enjoys this music. It's such a great quality recording, and the sax player u absolutely the best. What a way to end a dull or sad night. ❤
As a 60 year old happily married straight man I must say, I love this guy!
Not a Huey Lewis fan, BUT, since I grew up in the 80's (high school and college), I appreciate the simple fact that this was a REAL BAND, playing REAL INSTRUMENTS, and doing songs live without all the techno gadgets we see today! Great job! And I SOOOOOOO miss the 80's! Best. Decade. Ever!
Only a FAN would even bother to write such a great response!!!
You're my hero. 😀
70's were better for Sex and drugs and rock n roll
@@mauriceortiz8817 thanks
@@midnittkr I was too young then but from what I remember seeing...yup
Outstanding!!!
Huey Lewis and the news were great! Saw them live back in the 80's. Why cant their be more bands like this now. Absolutely Awesome!
amen
Check out Lexington Lab they cover so many groups unbelievably ❤❤❤❤ check out Rosanna ( Toto) steely Dan reeling in the Years! Huge song catalogue of hits😂❤
My 1st Album I personally bought! ;) LOVE YOU HUEEYYY!!!!
Saw them live in London in the 80s, blooming marvellous................
Sound of my youth, great
in about five years they'd hit their peak, and really stayed there. A real band with no electronics. Pure instruments.
I Love this Band.
GREAT show! NAILED IT! The beginnng of I want a new drug put a BIG silly smile on my face. I thank you. hahaha ROCK ON
My first rock concert at age 17 at the 5 Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 17 yrs old, first car, first job, making $3.35 an hour working at Bonanza Steakhouse. Amazing Times!
Rudy... Absolutely!! You better believe it was. Hope you can always remember it that way. All good stuff.
That's great. What job are you in now if you don't mind me asking?I loved Heuy Lewis and The News.
Love Huey Lewis & the News. Saw them twice in Columbus OH before I left for the Army 26 years ago! Watching this sitting in a hotel in Japan, great reminder of home. God Bless America!
How can 80's be 80's without Huey Lewis and The News.
Now this is what i call a live band, no bullshit, no autotune, no lip syncing, just pure showmanship and musicianship.
our bands back then and in the 70's rehearsed for days before the first concert, to get it down, not like these new want a be bands,
Autotune and youtube have destroyed the music business. Skill and talent no longer matter. It's all about creating a "brand" that the millennials and Gen Z will eat up. Nobody cares if you can actually sing or not.
Yes punisher!
I saw them one time in early 90s. I was not a huge fan of his and it wasn't something to do. He greatly exceeded my expectations. They had a portion of the show that was acapella and it really showed off his skills.
I agree.Heuy Lewis was brilliant.
Yes!! The band full of good looking talented MEN... so good to have this on this morning!!
I have Always Loved Chris Hayes and Huey
VINTAGE!!! Please make music like this again!!
Hey, 33 years ago *nearly* yesterday. Time, what a trip, man. Great show in both cases. Thanks!
A great Band, one of the few Bands of the 1980s that still had the roots of Rock and Roll in their music, I'm talking about R&B SOUL, I seen them back in the mid 80s, very good and soulful, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Guitarist Chris Hayes and what a kind and cool man and great musician, Thank you guys for your contribution to Rock and Roll and a fun time in Salt Lake City, Utah way back then !
Chris Hayes was a very good looking guy back in the 80's. I have only just found this video and can"t believe how good they were
WHAT A GREAT BAND! SAW THEM A FEW TIMES IN LONDON ENGLAND HAMMERSMITH ODEON, SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE (TWICE) FANTASTIC - GOT IN THE BANDS VEHICLE AFTER AND GOT ALL THEIR AUTOGRAPHS.... HAPPY DAYS. LONG LIVE HL&TN.
GREAT QUALITY
Great!!! Great!!!! Great!!! Wonderful!! It's like listening to the original recording. My favorite Band!!!
Awesome every hit they jammed even Function at the Junction! They've floored me!
Love the Music of Huey Lewis and the News ♥️🎸♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️🎼
Absolutely one of the great modern R&B rock bands ....fantastic sound and great songs
Agree with your comment.Huey Lewis And The News were brilliant, not like so called bands of today who are all auto tune talentless rubbish
What great music bringing back a lot of 1st year of college years WOW👀❤✌
Awesome music, i miss this time period.
one of the best music!!!
Huey Lewis and the News are an incredible band. Each musician in the band are so talented. They can probably play any genre of music and are very tight playing live together.
Love this time and this music great to lighten up during the pandemic .we need some of this music !!!! !!!!!!
LOVE Huey and The News! Amazing Blues and Rock! SPOT on Vocals and Instruments!! LOVE IT!!
My god, you know you've had a quality night out when you see Huey Lewis live. What a solid bunch of musicians this is!
The greatest band of the 80s true talent
Huey Lewis is the real 1st harmonica player I heard and made me want to play harmonica right away!😘☺🤙 The News: what a brilliant combo with their fine vocal harmonies oooh 👌😃
Thank you very much!🙂👏👏👏
Hello dear
I saw your profile and may I say you have such a beautiful and captivating smile
Somebody suggested I listen to some new music .. so here I am.
I was 35 at that time and I enjoy listen to these guys the same way today. Great band. Very rich sound. Beautiful melodies.
2 minutes in and there is a HUGE SMILE plastered all over my face...
This is amazing !!!!!
Excellent!!!
Saw them in Brighton in the eighties.
Absolutely fantastically talented, hip, fun band.
Tight musicianship, great, positive night out
I never knew Huey Lewis and The News had performed in Brighton in the 80's.
Had I known,my parents and I would have come down to see them.
Love the performance of the last song! Excellent!
I'm a professional singer. I know the words to about 500 songs. But these guys always give me an education.
Power of Love is still one of my favorite 80s songs. Reminds me of Back to the Future everytime.
Huey Lewis sings with soul
It was a great performance 33 years ago. Nowdays, I still enjoy watching the whole concert as if I were there at the club. Miss you guys!
LOVE THESE CLASSIC SOUNDS. A former road musician, singer songwriter.... Reminds me of the day. GREAT STUFF !!.
Featuring a outstanding drummer. One great tune after another. Give it all up for Huey Lewis &THE NEWS! Live at Slims south of market in San Francisco. Slims was owned by Boz Scaggs and partners.
thank you for the dirty lowdown, boz was a big favourite of mine growing up in the 70s..#LIDO
Is Slims in San Fransisco still there or has it gone now,and what has replaced it now?
still got many of his albums and loved having seen him live in Rotterdam back then, with Melissa Etheridge as support act! Awesome night I can tell you!!
I miss bands playing live...like this, organical, pure, genuine, cristal...human!
This level of musical and vocal and writing talent blows my mind.
Boy did I have the biggest CRUSH ON HUEY
Me too in the 80's.
Best Wishes
Hazel
Listening to this gig while reading other pages.... Whole Lotta Lovin...then it morphed into The Boys are back in Town!!! Shivers down my spine at that guitar solo intro! What a great band! Love that guy!!!
Real rock and roll from those old days!! fun times and lots of great music for all to enjoy!!!
God bless you Huey Lewis and your fabulous Band
Saw them live 5 times in the 80's and early 90's with my late wife. So So good! One of the best live acts I have ever seen! My heart breaks for Huey and his hearing issue
Do you remember them doing an a cappella song with a drum machine as accompaniment? I saw them in ‘87 or ‘88 do this and I can’t remember the song.
@@selecttoursnyc7787 They brought the machine out a lot in a Radio Flyer wagon for Bad Is Bad.
How about your late wife ? I'm curious
@@selecttoursnyc7787 as a gimmick for the sake of it that they used "electronics"
One of the best synced bands of all time!! Every positioned covered with perfection!!
I saw Huey Lewis and Foreigner at Nuremberg Ring Germany in 84 .
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This needs to be released in a Blu Ray/CD combo pack.
Bill Gibson, crazy under rated drummer! Solid!
Saw him in concert in Honolulu I I think '85. Great concert what a show!
Isn't this great? Doesn't it bring back great memories of the 80s and your friends at that time? It sure does to me. Youth! Juventud divino tesoro
GREAT MUSIC!
Tight VOCALS sassy sax! Lewis is a GENIUS! THE WHOLE BAND IS! I CAN'T FORGET WARD'S HARMONICA!
In summer of 1983 saw them playing in Great America Santa Clara. Sports wasn't released until September, but they were playing all those songs! I remember my girlfriend saying "this band is gonna be big". She was always right about music.
I’m from the Bay Area and attended so many shows by this band, all flawless and energetic, best of all was New Years Eve 1984 at the Coliseum in Oakland and the summer of 1984 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley.
Americans has and have such a great panoply of authentic great artists. Im. Canadian, and i hope that you guys can fix your terrible attacks of leftist communist media,... never lose your Liberty and Freedom, the role model of the world
Vacationing in Clearwater. Went to the beach and stopped by an open air cafe to grab some coffee. There he was, wearing shades, sipping coffee and looking at the newspaper. I did not want to cause a stir. He looked very relaxed. I just paused as I walked by and said Welcome to Saint Pete brother, enjoy your stay. Huey nodded with a big smile and a thumbs up.
Great band!!!! Huey is a great performer no gimmicks no crazy things just pure good music and great musicians big like thanks
The most talented men on the planet!!!!!
Be nice to go back....didn't realize how good it was in the 80's !!!
Decades later I have a newfound appreciation for Huey Lewis And The News. What a great band and what good songwriting. Even the overplayed hits are still enjoyable to listen to.
This band, in the early 90s, came to Camp Pendleton to play a free show for us folks in the service. We saw them on the beach; it remains a top-ten concert for me. They KILLED!
The live cut is identical to the studio cut in quality and clarity. Truly a rare and rocking band!
Gosh I miss them, Huey is so talented, He used to come back from driving a truck run for my father and walk into the office after singing for hours, his voice was so rich and cool.
Hell yah!
Thank you for sharing. What an awesome experience. Boys are back in town was brilliant. What a swing they put on it!
