Back when people had to actually be talented to become a famous musician. Now all you need is autotune, a plastic smile, and some stupid looking clothes that covers everything but your privates that noone in their right mind would ever wear in public or anywhere else for that matter. In fact you almost have to have those things now or your standards arent low enough to make it. Talent has taken a back seat to shock value and computer generated or at least assisted garbage.
In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square." A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.
How could anyone down vote this? Huey sounds exactly as he does on the recordings. No lip syncing, no auto tune, just pure rock and roll. And the rest of the band is just as genuine. A highly under-rated band.
Actually, live music isn't supposed to sound like recorded music. You got it backwards. Recorded music is basically a short sampling of the real art not the other way around. Maybe you're to young to remember 45's but if you ever expected The Beatles to sound the same live as they did on a 2:20 45 record, you didn't get it. The whole point in going to see Bruce Springsteen live is to experience the real art of music. Good thing you weren't around during Beethoven's time. All they had back then was LIVE. THIS IS 100 TIMES BETTER THAN ANY STUDIO RECORDING. Get with the program.
First of all it' s a matter of taste. I' m not a fan of the News because their music is too even, too glossy and too designed, typical 80's mainstream poprock. Great musicians, no doubt but I don' t want a studio sound on stage.
Saw and met Huey back in the 70s when he was touring UK as a member of Clover. Loved him then, loved him ever since. Top, top man and always gives a nod to the late great Philip Parris Lynott. ❤
MacGyver was extremely influential at this time. From pocket knives to men's fashion, there was no aspect of life that wasn't shaped by what the marketing industry calls to this very day "the Mac Effect"
This brings tears to my eyes, remembering not just a better day, but a time when really good bands could give you a gift of making your day just a little bit better.
Autotune and youtube have destroyed the music business. Skill and talent no longer matter. It's all about creating a "brand" that the millennials and Gen Z will eat up. Nobody cares if you can actually sing or not.

I did not want to cause a stir. He looked very relaxed. I just paused as I walked by and said Welcome to Saint Pete brother, enjoy your stay. Huey nodded with a big smile and a thumbs up.

@@jdsalinger73 they didn't have that technology back then so nobody had them. Hate to state the obvious. Actually the advantage of in-ear technology is NO FEEDBACK! They had just finished their "Small World" tour when they did this show so they were well rehearsed. Seen them many, many times since 1987 and they've never played bad. Fantastic live and all are real talented.
Featuring a outstanding drummer. One great tune after another. Give it all up for Huey Lewis &THE NEWS! Live at Slims south of market in San Francisco. Slims was owned by Boz Scaggs and partners.
This band, in the early 90s, came to Camp Pendleton to play a free show for us folks in the service. We saw them on the beach; it remains a top-ten concert for me. They KILLED!

@@jdsalinger73 they didn't have that technology back then so nobody had them. Hate to state the obvious. Actually the advantage of in-ear technology is NO FEEDBACK! So, while you may think it lessens the quality it actually improves the quality. And, something you obviously don't know is, at that time Huey had already lost the hearing of one ear so having in-ear technology helped him.
They had just finished their "Small World" tour when they did this show so they were well rehearsed. Seen them many, many times since 1987 and they've never played bad. Fantastic live and all are real talented.
Isn't this great? Doesn't it bring back great memories of the 80s and your friends at that time? It sure does to me. Youth! Juventud divino tesoro

Is Slims in San Fransisco still there or has it gone now,and what has replaced it now?
This band, in the early 90s, came to Camp Pendleton to play a free show for us folks in the service. We saw them on the beach; it remains a top-ten concert for me. They KILLED!

Slim's ain't exactly small. Same as the Fillmore and many other venues. Nothing like the tiny north bay bars where they got this going.
Best small club band I have ever seen. WHole house is rockin'
Timeless Rock n Roll. I've loved Huey since he was with Clover back in the early 70's. HLN is a forever keeper. One of the Best bands ever! 2024 sounds as fresh as the 80s!❤
