Does Delonghi know their basket is substandard? Crazy there's so many hacks that make this product better, yet the manufacturer doesn't do anything about it.
I just bought delongi dedica (few days ago) and this machine is unable to get enough pressure to get water through double walled pressurized basket, when I fill it with 14-15 grams of fine grinded coffee... I even changed the grind level. I have electronic grinder with grinding stones with 40 levels of the finesse of grinding, from 1-7 is for an espresso, I was using 1, now I used level 5 and dedica is still unable to get water through... I wanted to tamp more to get the extraction slower and get 20-25 seconds and 20-30 ml, but even with a very subtle tamp after starting the extraction, it tries for a while with a strange quiet sound, sometimes a few drops fall out (not always) and after a few seconds it stops (3-4-5 seconds)... I am very unsatisfied with the machine yet... When I use the smaller basket with 9-10 grams of coffee, it is able to get the water through, but quite quickly, so I wanted 14-15 and good tamp to get 20-25... but not with this machine... I saw some video where someone pierce that smole hole in the double basket, but is that okay? (video: ua-cam.com/video/ejvfYtKISRE/v-deo.html)
I've got a Dedica with the removable filter insert in the pressurised basket. So I just removed the insert, drilled a 5mm hole through where the really small hole was and then replaced the filter insert. Put the basket back in the handle and then in the machine and it worked OK but completely differently from before. I'll post separately on what I did after, which is a lot, but one thing I noticed straightaway is that it is much, much easier to get the used coffee puck (is that the word?) out of the basket. I've got a knock-box with the bar across to receive the used grounds but sometimes I had to hit it so hard that the basket jumped out of the handle. Now that I've drilled out the hole the puck (let's call it that) comes out with just a tap on the bar. I'm sure it's the change of pressurised to non-pressurised that has made the difference because another basket from an alternative supplier behaved exactly the same. What is irritating that I have no explanation of what is occurring, in fact it seems counter-intuitive to me.
Hey Chris! I find that the Dedica knocks out super clean with any unpressurized basket. It is a dream. But I think it is a combination of that and the Dedica not having a 3 way solenoid to release pressure on the puck after extraction. My Gaggia for example does have a 3 way solenoid, and the pucks seldom knock out cleanly. For sure, it also has to do with coffee amount, tamping, and potential surface materials of the basket.
Hey! I love your videos. I just got today the Delonghi 885. And I also got a puck screen. But I see you don't use it. Why you don't use a puck screen in the portafilter?
I don’t feel it’s necessary. It helps distribute the water better, in particular, when you have a bad shower screen. But the Dedica comes with a pretty good shower screen in my opinion.
hello, i bought the dedicated delonghi and everything works ok, i have a question, which single basket can you recommend for this machine? Thank you.I saw a 51 mm LA PAVONI, do you think it is compatible? Thanks
You should do another video where you make the pressurised straight after. I don’t think it makes a difference, machine was warmer when you made the second coffee. I have the same machine and my coffee is amazing with the pressurised one.
I have buy a aftermarket basket about 6 € for my dedica. I grind the fresh coffee thin And tamper it.But the espresso come out like water without crema. You cant drink it. The original pressurized Filter has less and smaller holes . I Think the dedica cannot make enough pressure. Can someone help me?
Hi Tom, thanks for the helpful video. I'm a little concerned about the hot liquid on the plastic. I'm wondering, is there a way to use this machine without the hot liquid going through plastic?
Hi there! Sure, you could just remove the plastic insert, or buy a bottomless PF (which often come with baskets). Check the description for some suggestions. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I would also like to keep the pressurised portafilter, but I would love to either replace that plastic insert with a stainless steel one or get a pressurized portafilter with all metal inside. Is there any such option?
I recently got a Delonghi Le Specialita Arte. The two baskets included with the machine don't have a single hole at the bottom. I can see a matrix of many holes from both sides. Are these non-pressurised baskets?
Hi Bee! Thanks for watching! Well, a normal single shot is 7 grams in, and 14-20 grams out, but it is a little finicky to get single shots, so I almost always do doubles. Aim for 20 seconds if you can. Cheers!
Hi again Tom. I tried to use your links but I'm in Portugal using Amazon Spain. I did fine a few choices for a non-pressurized filter basket compatible with the Delonghi EC685...the one I picked on that website won't get her until mid-November to early December. So have to go back and see if I can find another with a quicker delivery as I have 30 days to try out this machine before it goes back to the store. Thank you for any additional thoughts you may have.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Greetings Tom and thanks for the reply...i appreciate it! I tried searching for the one you suggested but it doesn't come up on the Amazon Spain site. I'll try Germany. Amazon germany does sell a choice that gets good marks but doesn't ship to Portugal (and 70 euro)! while this one i'm sharing the link for below is one of the only versions i find available for Portugal...and partly because i always make a double expresso. There are a few other choices but they often only come with a single shot basket. i did mistakenly buy just the filter and would have to get out tools to make it fit I don't have (and ingenuity)! So this linked one seems to be "the choice" and will take its time arriving. I had a long phone call recently with a Delonghi rep and am pulling better shots now even with what Delonghi provides (however the coffee grounds are staying stuck in the machine in one clump when I remove the filter holder probably because i'm squeezing those 14 grams into the basket when it really only may take 12g or so?? Guess i have to modify until the new filter arrives...and is a "three ear" the right choice? I'm believing "ears" relate to the metal tabs on the edge of the filter holder itself? Lots of new learning. The dedica ec685 model is listed with the three ear version...thanks again and let me know if you have any other ideas Tom. www.amazon.es/gp/product/B0951Q3FHG/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A1X1XLRDSNL5Y2&psc=1

So basically if i cut the bottom or buy a bottomless filter the coffee is that much better? Also for this i would need a grinder as well right? And btw really great videos and unbiased opinion. Keep going!
Thanks much for the feedback! Well, with the bottomless, you can evaluate your shots. And I would suggest an IMS H26 basket (check description of video). But yes, you will need a capable grinder, and some nice fresh beans, too.
Hey Steve, that depends. What is your budget, and how much experimenting would you like to do? Do you have a grinder? Do you plan to do more espresso, or milk based drinks? Cheers, Tom
hello. Excuse me, what is the name of the mill that gives you coffee in grams? Can you send a link or tell me name and brand? greetings thank you so much
With larger pressurised basket and larger aftermarket basket, are you using the same amount of grind in each for double shot? Or does it change because of the pressurisation? Additionally, if you are using a larger basket instead of the smaller basket, for both pressurised and aftermarket grouphead.. would you advise the same ratio for grind if pushing single shot button? or will the grind amount be less/basket size change to the smaller basket?
Hi there, I just always weigh out my doses, and espresso. I go for 16 grams in, 32 grams out. It depends a little on the size of the basket. The included pressurized baskets can only fit 12-14 grams. You need to leave enough room to properly tamp. But yes, the ratio should be about the same, whether a single or double shot. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCornerhi bro what does ratio of 2 to 1 mean like ‘16 gram in, 32 gram out’ please explain. One more is there a specific setting for grind because you mentioned too fine can choke, too coarse machine finish under 10 seconds. What is fine setting like the numbers of the fine.
Hello Tom, I search for the best quality Bottomless Portafilter in wood or black handle & Premium Basket for my new Dedica ARTE EC885M i bought in Canada, what is your suggestion & link for my model? Danke
Hi I just returned from my us trip Seen many coffee machines in different houses. My cousin recommended only De Longi coffee machine RC 685 r 1300. He says this is the only company which will extract oil from coffee Beens along with pure decoction, and the flavour of this coffee with oil is something special and not found in other machines, Can u throw some light on this subject . Iam planning to buy this machine immediately after watching ur comments.
Hello there! Dedica is special because you can make a good espresso, despite being an economical machine. However, it does not extract Espresso differently than other machines. All machines push hot water through a compacted puck of coffee. On the fancier machines, you can control the temperature, the pressure, and the flow. This machine does not do that. But, it offers a good result nonetheless.
Hm. As a new owner of the EC685 i have a question. Does the pressurized extraction "eat" some pressure? I mean, the pump also has to press the coffee through the small hole. This should mean two things: the extraction time is shorter, because there is less pressure lost. So you can/have to use finer ground coffee. Is this correct? Sometimes i grind too fine or tamp too hard, so the machine is really sweating about getting some drops out of the portafilter.
Hey Björn, pressurized means that the pressure is artificially imposed upon the puck, since the liquid can only go through that tiny hole. I guess this would create a very high pressure. When you use a traditional non-pressurized basket, it is up to the fineness of the coffee grind and puck preparation to create the proper pressure, which should be somewhere around 9-10 bars. I wish this machine had a pressure gauge...
No matter how hard I try the cream won come out, just black coffe with no cream, I try different grinds and also try a shortened the spring inside, but there is no crema :(

Thanks for the nice video comparing the 2 baskets. I was wondering if we could replace the non-pressurized strainer (the one from your link - cheap but good) with the original basket/filter(s) without sawing/taking out the bottom part of the factory portafilter? Also, any suggestion to get a milk forther that can perform better? **** no worry, I have already found your other video about Rancilio steam wand. Thanks.
Hey Arthur, well the problem is that you'd have to take out the black plastic piece of the original portafilter, in order to get the aftermarket basket to fit. Then, you'd have espresso coming out of 3 holes. It's just nicer to saw the bottom off, so that you can evaluate your puck preparation. Thanks for the question! Oh, and they recently released an EC885, which should have a better steaming wand. 😉
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks. Is there any alternative for descaling as I have tried vinegar + water but it still has that orange light blinking and the steam is not consistent? The wand of EC885 looks pro but the price seems double.
@@arthuryu1905 Hey Arthur, yes the EC885 is more expensive - but it is also a new model. I would recommend the DeLonghi descaler. The light should turn off however, as soon as the process has been finished. Did you rinse twice?
I've got an upgrade from my aincient delonghi bar 14 to 685 recently (yes, it lasted THAT long, and it's still operational, in fact 8P), and I did not really like that new double-deck-basket. I tried to use my former original one, and it was fitting. It holds in there, and it brews ok. Although it seems that 685 has lower "shower lid", and the level of the tamped coffe should be lower (otherwise pf won't even lock in place). I'm considering screwing out the plastic nuzzles for now, because all they do is break my crema (and annoy me with the fact that they are plastic).
Hello. I just got the dedida 885. Do you know if the steam is supposed to be very loud? I am not sure if send it back. Because is to much noise to steam milk.

Hey Cassy, I would guess so, yes. This seems to have been developed for espresso, namely for the Sage machines, which work with non-pressurized baskets. Cheers!

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. I have decided to purchase a second portafilter from Delonghi and an IMS basket, to mode it like you did on the channel. My question is. As per your experience, what is the most optimal grind setting (how course / fine do you grind) for a medium roast coffee? I am trying to reduce the amount of trials and errors I need to go through to dial in the best possible shot for this machine with an unpressurised basket :) Thank you very much
@@Haik0 You have to find that out based on trial and error. Each bean is different. Each roast date will be different. Just aim for the 2:1 ratio in about 25 seconds, and then adjust to your tastes.
Hey I bought the depressurised basket that you recommended here, but when I try to put it on my delonghi stock handle, it doesn’t fit :( It seems like the bottom is to thick to puss it fully through, it almost gets in, but gets stuck at the end. What am I doing wrong?
I bought a new one and I don't get any crema, specially when using pods? Does this mean that my machine is faulty? Or is there any hacks to solve this issue?
Hello Heba, I am afraid that pods will give likely no crema. You have two options. 1) use the original pressurized filters and coarsely ground espresso 2) use the unpressurized filter, and get a grinder that will grind fine enough for espresso. Then, make sure to also use freshly roasted beans.
Hi Tom, I have just bought the new dedica arte machine and I'm wondering if the IMS basket can fit to the stock portafilter? The Normcore portafilter in your description is $112 AUD over here so it's a bit too pricy for me.
Hi there! Yes, if you remove the plastic insert, then it will fit. But if you want a cheaper bottomless PF , you could try this one: amzn.to/3OQamTe Additionally, you could just cut the bottom off the OEM one, with a hacksaw. Cheers!

Does the brand of non pressurised basket make a difference. I got an aftermarket bottomless portafilter and non pressurised basket. I have the finest grind on my delonghi burr grinder and tamp quite hard but get very bad channelling, spits and sprays. What are the lengths of the portafilter clips, the ones that hold it onto the machine ? I've gotten a similar, custom portafilter, but the clips are smaller than the original and they actually fail to keep the portafilter in.
what temperature setting do you use? i dose about 13-14gs of coffee and get a yield of 35-40ml of espresso. Recently switched to highest temperature on the machine and the yield is much better i feel.
Hey Zeeschan, I also use the high temp setting. Since this machine has a longer way between thermoblock and brew group, I think the high temp is better. 35-40ml of espresso is a little on the high side for a ratio of 14g in however. Have you tried around 28-30ml too? Could be better textured.
Hi. My double non-pressurized filter works well. Can't say the same for the single one. Even using 9-9.5 grams of coffee, grinded as the double, it still comes out too fast and too liquid. Should I put more coffee powder or It simply sucks no matter what?
So by this logic, the only reason for the Delonghi designers to put the pressurized basket in there is to make non-delicious coffee? This makes no sense. Don’t mod for the sake of modding.
Been using this coffee machine for about a week and i’m rather impressed with it, I’ve just got a aftermarket portafilter like your one, how fine are you coffee beans? Also what temperature are you running your machine? Great vid!
Hey there Reed, i’m glad you’re enjoying your machine! I grind fine enough so that a shot takes about 30 seconds. For my shot, I aim for a ratio of 2 to 1 (15 grams in, 30 out). If you grind too fine, your shot may choke the machine. If you grind two coarse, your shot maybe already finished at 10 seconds.

Hey Jeime, those are probably good beans then, however if they are already pre-ground, they will lose their freshness after a couple of days.
Thanks for the vid. What do you mean by so so and delicious? Is there a difference in texture ou density?
What am I missing? Why have you removed the plastic insert from the basket on the first shot?
Hi. Are there also precision baskets for ESE pods to fit the Dedica EC685?
Great videos! Thank you Tom!

SO why does all the expresso machine come with the pressurized basket ?
@@leila4268 I think because most people use them with pre-ground espresso, which is suited for the pressurized baskets.

Lots of new learning. The dedica ec685 model is listed with the three ear version...thanks again and let me know if you have any other ideas Tom.

Great video, thank you! May I ask what is the diameter of the tamper you are using?

Hello Tom,
I search for the best quality Bottomless Portafilter in wood or black handle & Premium Basket for my new Dedica ARTE EC885M i bought in Canada, what is your suggestion & link for my model? Danke
Why provide pressurized baskets when un-pressurized is better?
Because they’re more forgiving and easier when you don’t have a grinder.
Hi
I just returned from my us trip
Seen many coffee machines in different houses.
My cousin recommended only De Longi coffee machine RC 685 r 1300.
He says this is the only company which will extract oil from coffee Beens along with pure decoction, and the flavour of this coffee with oil is something special and not found in other machines,
Can u throw some light on this subject .
With a pressurised basket you can't grind too fine. With a non-pressurised grinding fine is really important
What I noticed is that the reason of the sweating when using pressurised basket is not fine grinding or hard tramping but overflowing it a bit.

Hi Tom, Did you measure pressure when you use bottomless portafilter with EC680? I wonder if it can reduce from 15 to 9 bar. Thanks!
It won't go up to max pressure unless you grind too fine. I put a manometer in line, and I can get 8-10 bars by just grinding appropriately. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Then I'm satisfied with my setup now. I use Varia VS3 with EC685 and i think my shot is really nice better than previous grinder. 2) use the unpressurized filter, and get a grinder that will grind fine enough for espresso. Then, make sure to also use freshly roasted beans.

My bottomless portafilter from joe frex doesn’t make that sort of crema….
Hi Soo, check out this playlist, on how to get crema: ua-cam.com/play/PLOBVVD2p7BmkxQ9fX_kgx1zPKF2n_wUSG.html
Hola. Pues mi cafetera, arroja el café por gotitas, que puedo hacer 😰😰😰 y nada de crema!
Hello there! Try this video: How to get Crema: ua-cam.com/video/00NSG9459a8/v-deo.html
u mean unpressurized ?
Yes 👍🏻
Hello, is it 30ml or 60 ml?
Hey Jiri, what do you mean, exactly? The basket is a 14-16g basket, providing a yield of 28-32ml of espresso. 😉
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thx
if 30 or 60 ml leaks in 25 s
@@jirivanek4560 Hey Jiri, ideally 30ml in 25 seconds.
Hi. My double non-pressurized filter works well. Can't say the same for the single one. Even using 9-9.5 grams of coffee, grinded as the double, it still comes out too fast and too liquid. Should I put more coffee powder or It simply sucks no matter what?
Try grinding a little finer.

You've got to change lenses from a prime. It's too distracting, making me nauseous.
Lol, this was one of my first videos. I have the focus handled much better now on my newer videos. Thanks for your feedback!
I bought this non pressurized basket, but my coffee doesn't gets crema... I guess mine is defective. DO you use high or mid water temp?
Hey Victor, the most important factor in getting good crema is fresh beans, ideally less than 4 weeks old. Do you have a local roaster?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Sadly no.. but it's good to know. I'm realizing that maybe the basket holes are too big! Thanks!
Hey Viktor, that depends on the basket that you bought. So far I have bought three aftermarket baskets, and they were all very good.
I can´t even finnish watching this video! Dude, learn to hold the camera steady!!
Thanks for your feedback, lol. This was one of my first videos. They have gotten better though. Cheers!
So by this logic, the only reason for the Delonghi designers to put the pressurized basket in there is to make non-delicious coffee? This makes no sense. Don’t mod for the sake of modding.
No, they make pressurized baskets so that people can simply use pre-ground coffee.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner would you say its worth it to upgrade to portafilter? Its kinda expensive from where im living..
Well Joe, you could just cut off the stock portafilter if you have a hacksaw. Check out this video I made: ua-cam.com/video/PYHISoQ-3qI/v-deo.html
Being able to see the extraction is an important step of the process of learning good espresso.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thanks, will have a look! Cheers mate!!

I tried it but non-pressure not working for me, even use fresh roasted coffee. no crema, and coffee spilt everywhere i'm stuck.
My eyes leaked out. Terrible video shooting.
Yes, it wasn't great, but this was one of my first videos. Cheers!
Aha with the pressurised basket it looks like its pissing, ive been using the pressurised for so long i just ordered one non pressurised off amazon for £9
Hi Tom, I’m loving your content, it’s helping me a lot to decide! I wanted to ask, if I buy the dedica and decide to wait a bit to get a bottomless portafilter, can I take out the plastic from the original delonghi portafilter and put a non-pressurised filter on it? Would you recommend it?
Yes, that will work.
Hi, this is an amazing world. I have various doubts. I'm thinking of buying the Dedica EC685 coffee maker for €170, any better recommendations?
I also need a filter without a basket, I understand that it can work without a basket for one coffee but not for 2 coffees, since it does not distribute the coffee. Any ideas?
At this point in time, I would recommend the ECP3420. Check this video out: ua-cam.com/video/au92VvBYLrA/v-deo.html
Please help guys, i got this machine recently, but i have a problem. When i put a decent amount of coffee i mean even less then on the video, there is no extraction, coffee struggling with dripping, when i put less it goes nice.
You think it is an issue with the machine doing not enough pressure, or coffee ground level ???
Small amount of coffee dripping nice, slightly more coffee the machine is stuck :(

Hellooo, we recently bought a bottomless portafilter with a non pressurized basket but we can't get crema from it, does it depends on the grinding of the beans? Also when we tried back the free portafilter, its no longer working for the espresso, any idea why?
Hello Jeime, thanks for your question! I am in the process of making a video about this.
The 2 most important factors are 1) fresh beans and 2) the right grind setting.
How old are your beans, and what kind of grinder do you have?
-T
@@TomsCoffeeCorner great, looking forward to your next upload. We buy fresh grinded beans monthly from our local roaster.
Hey Jeime, those are probably good beans then, however if they are already pre-ground, they will lose their freshness after a couple of days. Also, The fineness of the grind may not be dialed into your machine.
Do you have a budget by chance, for a hand grinder or a motorized grinder? If so, I could recommend a couple of good ones.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Hi Tom, I have the same coffee machine and I would like to start my own grinds for it. The Eureka grinder is out of budget for me. What would you recommend for around 150-200€ for this machine and good espresso shots?
@@endofmyself Hey Andras, are you nearby Germany? If so, I can recommend this Graef grinder. I have made good espresso with it. Downside is that it is a bit loud and messy: Graef Mühle: amzn.to/3ppDy6N Tamper: amzn.to/2ZdVVQX
how many grams of coffee can fit in the big default basket? i have not aftermarket stuff (even use the plastic tool it came with for tamping) i can fill it with 10grams easily, with effort not to make a mess managed 13-14 but it may touch the group head (i can see in the after-extraction puck a slight circlular shape in the middle)
14 grams fits in the double, and 7-8 grams in the single. Cheers!
Isn't the Dedica (being 15 bar) better suited for pressurized basket?
Yes, that is true. But you can reduce pressure of the extraction by grinding and distributing appropriately. Cheers!
impossible to make coffee with ese pods 😅😅
Hi Tom, is the after market single wall basket compatible with the original EC685 portafilter?
Yes, you just have to remove the plastic insert.
Hi Tom, once I take out the plastic piece from the original portafilter, would I be able to put it back in if later u decide to use the original again? Another question about the cable tie on the frothing wand, if i decided to use the outter piece again, do i have to first remove the cable tie or i can simply just apply the outter piece and froth milk with it?
Hi there! Sure, you can put the plastic insert back in, anytime. The cable tie will need to be cut off, for the panarello to fit back on. Cheers!
