For how much you pay for these damn controllers... it’s ridiculous we have to deal with this. My ps4 controller hasn’t done this ever.
Agreed. The fact that they continue to ignore that the problem exists makes it even worse. Nintendo used to be known for their quality and it has definitely slipped over the years

I'm pretty sure that the 'dust' is ground down plastic. That's also probably why it happens to the left stick more often since it tends to see more use.
I think it's sweat residue. I've had some of the same dust appear on my triggers after long smash sessions.
Yeah this happens to me too.
@@gdawgs101 This didn't happen with any of my other controllers, if it was sweat residue all my controllers would have it.
Also using metal sticks would make no difference at all.
@@andregon4366 if it was ground plastic, why would I have it on the face of my shoulder buttons then? It also only appears after long, tense smash sessions
@@gdawgs101 I have no idea if we're talking about the same thing.
What's happening in my case is consistent with OP description.
I never had any sort of residue on the Switch controller shoulder buttons, XBox 360, Joycons, PS2, Wii, Dreamcast controllers or Wii U gamepad.
I, too have this issue. I appreciate you taking a second off your normal posting to help us out with this. Mine also holds down a tiny bit every once in a while in neutral
That's what mine does, holds down, but it is the wired pro, and it holds down A LOT
Both of my pro controllers had this issue. I always take care of my property, so it’s disappointing to see Nintendo’s quality go so downhill in the Switch generation, especially when the cost for accessories is ridiculous.
When plastic wears down, it usually "releases" this white dust. If you ever used lego technic, then you should know what I'm talking about.

yeah! I blow on the stick sometimes, it's a temporary solution (maybe every 2 or 3 days) but it works.
I’ve have that exact issue. I got a new controller to keep on playing Splatoon 2. It’s pretty annoying when you try jumping over a gap but you fall into the void instead.
Or when it pushes you into a ROLLER
Did it drift
Same here dude. Exactly 1 day ago
@4:48 It's not white dust, It has been proven to be the black contact surface that scratches off from overuse. People and myself have taken the analog stick apart. There is a metal springy thing that moves over a black slate like surface thing. Since you often push forwards most of the time, you will notice most tons of scratches on the black slate from all directions, but significantly more in the forwards direction. Nintendo designed it to never scratch. Most of the time there is zero scratches, but once a single scratch starts, the surface gets rough and dusty (losing contact). Blowing/cleaning/lubricating removes the dust and makes it work again. Once the black slate is scratched, it has a rougher surface and becomes easily scratched again and dusty faster/easier. You can only clean or remove the dust so many times till you have to completely replace the analogy stick, because the black slate becomes destroyed beyond repair.
I'm not sure this is the issue because when I put very small amounts of water into the right stick it's able to fix the issue
@@the_legendary_fire Cleaning the controller always helps, but pouring water on it is never recommended. A little high pressure air seems to do the same job. However, this fix never lasts long; because it ignores the root problem.
AND I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO HAD WHITE DUST ON SPECIFICALLY THE LEFT STICK

mine has cocaine in it too XD
I just bought a new pro controller recently and the left stick broke after a week! Nintendo really needs to fix this problem and give people refunds and it's not that I don't take care of my controllers, I just think it's annoying how Nintendo just let's this pass!
Agreed. They addressed the same (or similar) issue with the Joycons *AFTER* a class action lawsuit was filed against them. The same thing needs to happen with the Pro controller, this is completely unacceptable.
Just got mine from amazon, stick drift right out of the fuckin box. Why does all Nintendo stuff feel like such a piece of shit. The dock barely even holds my switch in place lol

The white dust is from plastic wearing down over time. What happens is that the sticks are made from a softer plastic than the casing, and there's a hard edge where the stick touches the casing so the stick grinds down over time and the dust enters the internals.
Luckily, the plastic dust doesn't cause any *permanent* damage unlike with the JoyCon (which use a smaller but more fragile electrical component since there's less room), but if enough builds up it may become necessary to take your controller apart to clean it.
My worry with the metal sticks is, unless you get ones made of very smooth metal it may just reverse the problem - instead of the casing wearing down the stick, the stick will wear down the casing and cause the same issue with a much harder kind of dust. That could cause actual damage to your controller, so if you do decide to mod your Pro Controller with metal sticks you shouldn't cheap out on them.
1. Isopropyl alcohol. Don't use other kinds of alcohol, they'll likely melt the plastics away.
2. Silicone grease lubricant. Be careful with other lubricants, as they again can damage plastic.
Just take the mechanical housing of the stick out, dunk it in alcohol, let it dry, then put in silicone grease with the help of a toothpick or something like that, to get it into the mechanism. That's how I fixed my malfunctioning Wii U gamepad sticks.
Would wd40 do?
@@MajoraTheBard If you want to burn a hole through the plastic, yes. Most of WD40's magic is in dissolving rust and other stuff stuck into mechanisms. That will for sure destroy the plastic.
Stick with isoprop alcohol to clean, silicone grease to lubricate.
@@dkosmari alright thank you for awnsering
@@MajoraTheBard This could've gone very bad
@dkosmari - I'm guessing the silicone grease is serving the purpose of keeping the "dust" out also? or did you replace with the metal sticks? I clicked the Amazon link in the description but A) the result doesn't say it's for switch pro controllers (only PS and Xbox - not sure if that matters or if they're universal) and B) they're not currently available with no ETA. I was curious if, if you left the stock thumbsticks on, if more dust will just end up finding its way into the contacts, or if the silicone grease has kept your sticks working well. Thanks for the comment!

Blowing on a video game device to fix it? Sounds familiar.
A Nintendo classic
For me I had to blow on my DS on the right button.
*cough cough* 3DS Game cartridges *cough*
No fuckin way! This worked for me as well!
It worked for me on PSone
To clean your left control stick, disassemble the controller and remove the stick cap to completely expose the "stick box", use compressed air to blow out any dust or debris. This should take care of your problems, but feel free to spray just a little bit of compatible grease in there, just a tiny bit though.
I have just unresponsiveness with my left joycon stick but I just wiggle it around violently and it fixes it for a while. It is so stupid, especially since that was at most 100 hours into joycon use, and my Xbox 1 s controller which I’ve used for at least 600 hours on rocket league on my pc over the last year and I had no issues at all. Just why nintendo? They are so damn expensive it isn’t that hard to do it right!
I have the same problem with the switch lite I'm really hoping that it's just a bit of grime, but I've only had it for two weeks, if it is properly malfunctioning I'm going to be so annoyed since it was a gift.
This issue should have been sorted out after the launch, not three years down the line with a follow up lawsuit that Nintendo have tried to dismiss.
The “dust” is the stick grinding against the rims of the con cavity for the sticks. Using an old toothbrush helps clean it off
My left stick drifts all the time so that my Inkling walks towards the screen by herself

I'm so glad you made this video, when this happened to my first pro controller last year, I couldn't find anything when trying to search for this problem and I was even blowing into the stick every now and then as a temporary fix.
It was so frustrating and in the end I just bought another controller. I may have to buy some of that spray just in case it happens again!
As for the dust, I try not to let it accumulate, as soon as I see even a bit of it, I clean it off now
THANK YOU!! Blowing directly into the stick fixed my issue!! I was scared of doing so because, well, spit, but this was well worth it. Thanks dude!
I haven’t had any issues with my controller. I can feel the frustration of people who DO have this issue.
Hopefully this issue gets resolved ASAP!
I haven't had this problem as far as I can tell, but I do get the dust. Nintendo's hardware has really taken a noticeable dip in quality this generation. Loads of stories about controllers acting up, warping and cracking consoles, etc. Really hope this isn't the new normal.
Thankfully, I haven’t encountered the console warping issue.
For me it started all the way back with the Wii Nunchuck.
This generation? They haven't had a good controller since SNES lol
@@danytalksmusic What?
Oh my gosh! Before, the L stick wasn’t making complete circles on the Calibrate Control Sticks test at first. But after blowing into the control stick, it made full complete circles and worked like a charm! Thank you!
Think you so much i was about to buy a new controller but then i searched for analog stick problem so i found your video
I've never clicked on a video so fast! Thank you! I keep having this exact issue with my pro controller! I've sent it to Nintendo 3 times for this very same problem!
Question: I couldn't find the specific brand of cleaner that you have in the video. Is "WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner Spray" basically the same thing?
I have the same problem, just with the controllers that come with the switch
@@cami7026 I've had this problem with my Joycons, but it's mechanically a little different with them. Joycon sticks are made out of fairly cheap (not good quality) materials and you can find (and easily install) replacement joycon sticks on amazon for as little as $10. @SpawnWaveMedia has a great tutorial on that.
2:58 DUDE' asmr is so good 😂
Woah! The blowing actually does quite a bit! It started working again for like a day, and whenever I keep on doing it it fixes it for a while! Thanks so much!
I've noticed the white dust under my left stick as well. Do you think that the plastic is somehow getting ground down as part of regular play? And might this also be why JoyCons frequently have drifting problems?
This has actually happened to my joycons, not allowing me to fully input vertical movements
Same here with my left Joycon.
Same
I've had this issue with my Pro Controller. I feel like Nintendo used the wrong plastic for the Controller cover. Transparent plastic is known to be less durable than solid, which is why the control stick seems to grind away at it creating the white dust. Some people will say your too forceful with the stick, don't grind so much, but I don't think this is the case.
What I did to fix this problem was to take the Controller apart (not easy) take the stick cap off and put a vacuum hose over the mechanism then put everything back together. Making sure the stick caps are the right way round (they have a centred position). My left stick now works perfectly just like brand new and has been for several months. Although I can see having to repeat this process again in the future.
Wait so you could just get a solid version of the controller and it won't happen?
Thank you! Saved my Switch Pro controller and an Xbox controller that’s been giving me trouble for months!
Man you are the real MVP for making this video! My controller is working normally again for the moment thanks a lot
0:32 :o It me
Also as someone who tried metal sticks on my Splatoon 2 controller, I definitely do *not* recommend them.
The white dust that a lot of players get is the stick grinding away from friction against the controller shell. Like Dude, I theorized that it was the plastic dust that caused the left stick issue, so I set out to find a solution. I'm currently on my 3rd Pro controller and have tried PS4 sticks, Wii U sticks (because this wasn't a problem on the Wii U), using scotch tape, and metal sticks to hopefully solve this issue.
I don't know about Dude's controller (because it looks like it's custom and possibly made out of a different plastic than the default pro controllers) but when I tried the metal sticks out on my Splatoon 2 controller, after about a week of using them I realized that it just reversed the problem. Rather than the controller shell grinding away the stick, the metal sticks were grinding away the controller shell (which btw, is harder to replace, maybe even irreplaceable if you have the Splatoon 2 controller). You can take the risk if you want to, but again I don't recommend it.
I do believe I've found a solution of sorts. What I've done is I bought a roll of low-friction tape and applied it to the stem of the sticks, where they contact the controller's shell. I've been using them like this for a few weeks now and they've been working super well, but I'm still testing how durable they are before I reach a conclusion.
Status update?
Iron Heart! He died 😐
@@TorchesUponStars
Oh lmao didn't see this
The tape works perfectly fine, my sticks haven't drifted/malfunctioned since I've been using it. I just have to replace the tape every few months or so. And since I just have to replace a tiny strip of tape every 2-3 months, I have a long... long time before I have to buy a new roll.
This is also the case with my controller. I thought I gotta buy a new one!
Thanks dude ❤️
At least it could last longer when I try this
Send it in to Nintendo, they are aware of this issue, they sent me a new one

The joycons are notorious for breaking really easy. They don't last long at all. Stick drift plagues them

My left joystick has been drifting for a whole year and all it took to fix it was to blow on it. Wow. Thank you so much! 🤟
Pros: dust is my issue
Cons: I’m not old enough to just buy a controller
Yeah my drifts to the left and it heavily interferes with me playing Smash
Very annoying as it is.
Same but it keeps making me dynamax on Pokemon

Omg I love you man. The blowing technique worked like a charm! Much love chief! ❤️
Thank you so much dude! My controller works perfectly fine now thanks to your method! 👊
There are two basic issues you can have. One is "drift" where your controller thinks you are slightly pushing the controller in one direction. You can see this in a game like Mario Odyssey - where the game requires you not touch the stick to warp to a flag. If you can't easily warp to a flag this is your problem. It can be corrected by calibrating from the Switch menu.
The other is physical crap in the control stick and this is because Nintendo used sticks that support the "push down on the stick" function. You should first try contact cleaner which you can buy at a hardware store or on Amazon. It's a spray bottle of liquid that squirts out (like WD-40, BUT DO NOT USE WD-40) and washes away whatever crap is in there. It is likely to work so try that before going further.
You can also buy replacement sticks and de-solder and re-solder a new stick in the controller, there are instructions to do this online. It costs about $5 for the part.
Buying a new controller altogether is not the cost-effective solution.
The metal sticks you linked to don't mention being compatible with Switch pro controller s:
I can't believe blowing on the control stick actually worked.i really need to start dusting my stuff more often. Thanks!
Wow, thank you!! totally worked... I used the vacuum first then the straw and boom, good as new.
The left stick is the reason why I'm not top 500
Oh yes just bought a pro controller 2 days ago and it started to drift its almost nothing but im scared its gonna get worse
Hi, how are you? Well, you'll see, I saw one of your videos where you said that your switch pro-controller had a lever failure and that it was best to switch to metal sticks so I wanted to ask if I already have the lever problem move alone could fix the provlema if I buy the metal sticks or can not remove the problem even if you put them? thanks anyway your video helped me a lot
very helpful video! I had that issue on my second controller and now it's fixed. Thank you so much DUDE
Remember to wash and dry your hands and dust off any sediment on your controller and joysticks before gaming!
Did this and mine still broke about 200hrs on it
You have to send your controller into Nintendo. I haven't been able to fully fix any of my controllers with anything other than doing that. It takes two weeks but it's free. I've had to do it 6 times among my 2 pairs of Joy-con and my Pro.
I have a question...Can I send the Pro controller without the guarantees paper or how that works?
How do you get it for free? Warranty I presume? Mine have always had warranty expired so I’ve had to pay a bit - way less than the cost of a new controller, but, yeah.
@@Midas526 Yeah, if your system/controller/accessory is still under 1-year warranty, just punching the serial number into an online repair ticket should be enough for them to email you a free shipping label with instructions on how to package and send it. If you don't have the serial number, I think you can still prove the date of purchase with the receipt (dunno if they ask you to text or email a picture or what, though)

I took off and replace my pro controller casing before, I noticed that this problem happens immediately I put the shell back on. The problem is that the mold circle is too small, if you took the front casing off, the stick can circle around very very far and it will not have any issues described in the video. I'm surprised , after I blew on it I never had this problem again and the results were instant. I don't know how but thanks.
my issue is that the motion of me pushing the left stick is either delayed or doesn't respond at all. it hasn't been happening all the time but when it does it is annoying.
