It worked great for me almost immediately. But I still have to clean them out this way every 3 days. I guess that’s what I get for buying “refurbished” from GameStop 🤷♀️
It seems like drift is worse in AC than other games, maybe because of the heavy play time and sensitive controls? Anyways, I did this and it worked for a week, but now it's back to drifting and it's getting worse 😭
@@ramenaddict1676 yeah I tried cleaning it again and one of the skirts seems to have it's edges be rubbing off so that could be affecting it, but I'll probably send mine in for repair or get pro controllers.
My new joycons literally arrived today and they already had a drift. I LITERALLY COULD OF FIXED MY OLD ONES WITH THIS VIDEO! shame I didn't find it sooner, thanks for the help!

Dude you're a legend bro. I had my left joycon with this issue. I replaced it, the replacement was still doing that. After that I replaced just the analog stick of the second replacement guess what, it was still doing that. But I saw your video today I did what you said, but I had to do it for two or three times, in order for the alcohol to go into the components. After playing with it a bit it was still kinda doing it, but then in the end it stopped. Probably it got cleaned by playing with it for a while too. Just sharing this, to let everyone know it works like a charm. Thanks dude. Subbed for this :) So it works but it may require some patience in some cases, like mine.

Can't play BOTW or AC:NH, imagine fighting an invisible gust of wind that pushed you to the left. Going to try this, if not replace the joystick or joycon completely.
@@eduardodiaz5762 I was *this* close to caving and buying $80 pro controllers, but I tried this as a last resort and my drift is completely gone! AC:NH was unplayable,I couldn't select anything from a menu without the cursor going wild, I couldn't stand still without my character going for a RUN in the opposite direction, it was awful. But now I can play properly!
I did this about a year ago and didn’t have an issue [I used tweezers to keep the rubber skirt up so I could push the q-tip around]. I started having the drift last night while playing animal crossing and forgot how to fix the drift. Found your video and it refreshed my memory. Thanks! =)
Little additional tip for you artists out there: instead of a Q-Tip, use a small, clean paintbrush. You can be much gentler with that than you would the Q-Tip, and you can get in deeper and not risk damaging your Joycon.
On a similar note, please don't use a cheap paint brush. Paint brushes tend to shed their bristles/hair. The last thing you need is a bunch of bristles/hair to get stuck in there.
This is a Miracle, I stopped using my Switch for over a year because I thought it was broken and I thought fixing it would be technical and expensive, but all I did was do your method, Calibrate the Joysticks and Update them, and BOOM, No more Drift.
Oh and I just want to add I used a sanitizer that was 70% ethanol, so if you don't have the substance he's talking about, anything that has alcohol or ethanol in should work 💕
Same thing happened to me but I discovered that clicking in the stick makes the input snap back and detects inputs properly, but only temporarily. Not sure if this is just me though.
I'm gonna say, I've been having issue with drift quite severely recently, especially since I play The Binding of Isaac the most on my Switch. Starting any Isaac run always has me slightly moving up, barely moving at all, or just shooting in a random direction. And yeah, this helped IMMENSLY. I might have to do this quite a bit, but the fact that it worked, just makes me happy.
I play Isaac too, and after a thousand hours of Animal Crossing during the pandemic I went and bought an usb controller to be able to play because the original ones made it IMPOSSIBLE to sneak up between spikes/dodge enemies etc I hope this video helps me fix my good old original ones (':
You sir are a wizard. I was getting ready to order a whole new set of joycons and then tried this once and you’d never be able to tell they ever had drift
I've done something similar to this to a few joycons, it's worked every time for me. The only difference is, I used a clean paintbrush to really get under that rubber flap :)
Or me in Skyrim: alright, let's sell this piece of junk to the NPC... My left Joycon: Oh you meant your precious weapon just above? Got it! Even my Pro Controller drifts... But not nearly as bad. But to a different direction. Left Joycon goes up pretty hard and Left Pro Controller stick goes mildly down. 😓 Back in the day they made everything last a lifetime and then some... But of course, that's not good business and Nintendo fucking knows it. Unrelated, but I HAD to look for a specific mouse that didn't have those cheap piece of crap Omron switches in them like 99% of the mise on the market. And finally got a piece of mind. No double clicks. They'd cost literally nothing to the companies and people would be a lot happier.
@@facelesspikachu5562 Don’t listen to him. Pro controllers work perfectly fine, and they rarely drift at all. I’ve had mine for a year now and no issues.
@Runt It's very unlikely. There's a reason "Pro Controller Drift" is not a phrase. Because pro controllers aren't very susceptible to drift. I've had my pro controller for a year and it has no issues. Again, quit spreading false information.

And the worse version of that is when people tell you to just go buy new joy-cons. Like, DO PEOPLE KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE A NEW JOY-CON IS?! AND WHAT IF THAT ONE DRIFTS TOO?!
@@Shinjis_Shenanigans no it’s not, because dirt can collect under the joystick after time, so sometimes you might see a drift, but probably never after you clean it
Some feedback: It works! I just tried once and the drift is totally gone. It was driving me mad. But make sure you are using 99% isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol), any other concentration can damage your electronics! Also, don't use rubbing alcohol or surgical spirits as they are usually mixed with other substances to avoid people drinking them.
I sent in both my drifting Joy-Con to Nintendo (not within the warranty period) and they ended up fixing them for free, so if you still have issues after this I'd recommend giving it a try.
@@coltonaallen At least in the US: Nintendo website -> scroll to the bottom under the support tab click repair help -> Start a Nintendo Switch Repair -> Click "Important: Set up a repair for your Joy-Con", and fill out the information there. This guide completely fixed the drift I was experiencing. I'm suprised how well it worked. I used a single Q-tip, some 91% iso propyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and followed the videos instructions. I have to return the joycon my wife bought, she thought it was broken.
Did you actually make a whole 3D model of a joycon stick just for us ? Now where is that subscribe button ? Edit : wow, 1000 likes. Okay. Thanks everyone ! I do random shitpost on another account, look for "Stupid French Bear". Also, this thread went from 0 to 100 in like three answers, wtf happened ?
@RS1 he's using tinkercad, which is the simplest of the 3D modeling softwares available, just drag and drop shapes. not saying I'm not impressed he took the time to make it (unless he found one already modeled, which is quite possible), but it's very basic software---anyone can use it, and that's the beauty of it!
Took a few tries with the q-tip. My joycons are 5 years old so they were probably really dirty. I actually got a small juice box straw and put a few drops of isopropyl in there and worked it around.... But can confirm this method worked.. thanks.
Ugh, relatable. That got really annoying when I was doing Chaos VS Order, what made it worse is that my right Joy Con wasn't just drifting down, it also drifts left so when it drifts down, it drifts in both directions and I have to fight it for 2-5 seconds to regain control, and by the time I get control of the camera again, I'm already dead. Once Nintendo offered free repairs, I got mine fixed. Until recently, now my left JC is drifting, which makes me look like a dum dum when trying to play ACNH, but thankfully I tried out the method in this video and it worked for me.

Can confirm this 100% works with the original switch. I tried it with four joy-cons that ALL had this problem, and they are as good as new.
How long do I have to wait until they work properly? I tried on my left Joystick that would make my playable character drift left and right, and now they're just drifting a little bit to the right.
It worked great for me almost immediately. But I still have to clean them out this way every 3 days. I guess that’s what I get for buying “refurbished” from GameStop 🤷♀️

Little additional tip for you artists out there: instead of a Q-Tip, use a small, clean paintbrush. You can be much gentler with that than you would the Q-Tip, and you can get in deeper and not risk damaging your Joycon.
