He needs a Netflix documentary ASAP!! His story is so inspiring!! People back then had less resources than we do now and yet they accomplished so much! This is sheer hard work and determination! Loved hearing him speak, he’s such a good storyteller.

He's the man. He's the driving force behind many of the 😎 coolest looks. Started too many trends to list here. Willie Wear was heavily influenced as well. It's a shame that he didn't get the full credit he's earned. The fashion and music was key. Mad respect!

Wow, Soul Train was the absolute best Dance television show & noticed that it was great exercise too. The way the dancers moved was energetic, fun and definitely inspirational to others who love music & Don Cornelius’ Soul Train. That was a great time.
Wow, from the door getting shut in his face after his own cousin and friend went in to Soul Train, to being nearly the sole designer for the show and reintroduced to everyone by the same dude who shut that door, to being a back up singer on a dope 80's classic, wearing his own creation, to suiting up everybody in that epic MC Hammer performance.....got damn what a journey and moments that must have been.
Tamechi actually has a music video on UA-cam called “the poak chop”......where I was introduced to him initially and seeing this just certified him as legend 🏆✅💫.... I played that video endlessly, introducing it to all my friends. We even called a number linked to one of the videos back in the day; he actually answered and was the most pleasant, sweetest person alive. Dope❤️🔥

Great editing and documentation of black history, black queer history and afro diasporic history- showing how we do. All these people on Soul Train really helped each other out and showed true entrepreneurship and guts. I watched the show from back in the 70's and I knew i was different then as a child and now I see why i loved the show. With Tamechi's testimony here documented I am grateful. He is truly an inspiring sista. In many instances black folks tried to erase us black queer folks. But now is the time to embrace your sistas and bruvs. Peace

An amazingly inspiring person! He did not compromise nor did he let the heavy handed social forces push him down to confirm to their levels and standards. He rose above it all by the strength of his mind and his indomitable talents. He is a heroic example for all!
What a dope story about tenacity, never giving up and allowing the universe to do what it do👏🏾
They had too many rules. He was ahead of his time
Sodom and Gomorrah in full affect...
@@FKimE What do your Bible stories have to do with dancing and fashion design?
@@crnkmnky lol my question as well
He needs a Netflix documentary ASAP!! His story is so inspiring!! People back then had less resources than we do now and yet they accomplished so much! This is sheer hard work and determination! Loved hearing him speak, he’s such a good storyteller.
its interesting. Out of all of these soul trian dancer stories, you hardly ever hear of a seamless, easy entry, into the circle. What a life lesson,. Stay persistent with your goals and dont let anyone stop you!

I love your comment. If you want to get in to the party hard enough, you will find a way!!!! 😁💯

The white man is going to stop you
@@JustBree716 he probably tried but didn't...
He's the man. He's the driving force behind many of the 😎 coolest looks. Started too many trends to list here. Willie Wear was heavily influenced as well. It's a shame that he didn't get the full credit he's earned. The fashion and music was key. Mad respect!
Thank You so much 💯%
Just about every soul train dancer video, talks about this designer making the dancers clothes. FINALLY we get this interview!!!
Tamechi crawled... so Ru could walk... so Lil Nas X can run!
To see how far we have come and what queer artist had to put up with then just to be accepted is inspirational. Thank you for overcoming the limitations that were forced upon you, which made it a little easier for us today. For that you should be acknowledged & appreciated! ❤
I loved your analysis Getosupastar

“Queer”? 🙄
@@dewilew2137 what, it’s a fairly common word. you can look it up. 💁🏿♀️
Amazing time when you could simply call a phone operator and they actually would give you the contact information - plus people were looking out for each other if you were serious...fact Toney went by bus from NC to LA to make it such a American Dream story...
those days were so much fun. I was so bored in OKC i would call the operators just to talk to them.
"What's the point of coming out the closet if you goin stay in the damn house! It's a bigger closet!" Best quote ever
Baaabbeeeyyyy! Why am I just finding out that every look that I loved in the 80s and 90s was the brainchild of Tamechi!! The culture owes this genius a lot!
WOW.Another Soul Train dancer episode!!! I'm being spoiled!!! LOL.Learning something new with each segment.Tamechi was ground-breaking with the dancing and fashions.Didn't know he created the HAMMER pants!!! LOL.Hope he got PAID for his designs.
Same .
Isn't amazing people are copying your designs today. I love your story !! thank you for sharing.
I just love this guy! Fought like Hell, and stayed true to himself!
Literal fashion icon. I wish he would’ve designed ready to wear fashion. Soul Train taught us how to dance and dress. Watching all that beautiful melanin on my tv screen was amazing. 🙌🏾✊🏾👑
I love this series and I love hearing how everyone ended up on the Train.
I agree. More please!!
Yessssss
Me to !!!
I sincerely thank this channel!
The dancers on Soul Train was just as influential as the artists that came on the show!!
Wow, Soul Train was the absolute best Dance television show & noticed that it was great exercise too. The way the dancers moved was energetic, fun and definitely inspirational to others who love music & Don Cornelius’ Soul Train. That was a great time.
Truth Indeed
Dope❤️🔥
Thank you for letting us know! I just looked at that video along with The Doritos SuperBowl commercial, and the Sheneneh contest one! I am mostly speechless about learning more about Tamechi's history. He is AMAZING 💞💐👏🏾👏🏾!!!
Same here, i remember in 2009 watching that Poak Chop video at least 100 times trying to get the dance💯. It was as I’m scrolling through UA-cam I see the name Tamechi and instantly thought of the poak chop song/dance. Watching this interview was everything💯
WOW I'm so inspired! He is incredible. I wish expressing yourself without restrictive cages and labels was more encouraged.
OMG this episode was SOOOOOO AWESOME!!! Tamechi!!!!! You about to blow up AGAIN! :-)
Im REALLY ENJOYING this series! I grew up watching Soul Train and didn't miss it. I was in the early 1970s high school, so I wanted to know the latest dance moves. The way that the dancers got their chances in so interesting. Thanks so much!!!!!!
The clothes were fabulous!!!!!!
the comradery between the soul train dancers throughout all these stories has been beautiful. seems like they had a true sense of community.
Wow such an icon, definitely a major trendsetter with an amazing personality!!
Knowing of the Contributions Mr. Briggs brought to Soul Train has me in Awe.
🥰👏🏾🥰👏🏾🥰👏🏾
Tamechi’s story is inspirational- I hope someone listens to this and follows their dream.
Exactly and never give up
First off I would like to thank you for sharing this. I would also like to say a job well done. Peace

I love that he went home from school looking for Seseme Street and he found Soul Train! The same thing happened to me! I didn't have to hold the rabbit ears though, but I would have! It is so great that he has the history of the "Hammer pants" in solid video. ML to you my friend! We were all about Hammer time!!
YESSSSS i been waiting on Tamechi to be feature everybody been talking about his designs love tamechi
8:35- he killed that pop lock ... his own way
Never knew these facts. This was a great history lesson. Knew the fabulous clothes had to originate somewhere. He had the eye for what the dancers needed to wear and the direction the fashion needed to go in.. but he is correct, later in the yrs. Fashion kind of went out the window .. I enjoyed this interview so much. This what we the fans of the show needed... Glad he was persistent and kept at it. His hard work paid off because he knew where his superior talent layed and he went for it...much love and admiration to him...
I could listen to him for hours, and what a visionary!
He was SO COURAGEOUS!!!!! Not only was he an Soul Train dancer,he became a background singer & fashion icon!!!!!! He's truly a trendsetter!!!!! I love the story he shared about his parents dancing!!!! So captivating!!!! He's made a mark that can't be erased!!!! He's inspiring me to follow my dream❤️❤️❤️👏🏾
*His designs even made onto The Simpsons! I love these stories. And I love how he is so tremendously talented and never gave up!*
This was absolutely inspiring. I loved how he stayed true to himself when others wanted him to change. He was determined to shine and that he did! Also I’m glad I’ve got the chance to get to know Tamechi and he is a beautiful person inside and out. Just fierce!! ❤️
God Bless the operator who gave Tony the number to Soul Train
WOW. Tamechi deserves a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Just imagine if they did a series on Soul train, wow. Soul Train is STILL needed today and it should be on all streaming platforms.
WOW!!! so this is the person who dressed me and all my friends in the 80's and 90's. We would watch Soul Train just to see what the dancers were wearing and tried our best to copy the outfits. His fashions are literally why I won BEST DRESSED in High School. I'm Starstruck😊😍
The soul train dancers deserve a Grammy award 🏆you all were part of that music era that dominated the world as well as that fashion era the Grammy foundation needs to accommodate for your hard work dance and creativity 🎶🎶🎶🎶👏👏👏👏
???? They did not record anything. How do they deserve a grammy?
@@ertfgghhhh they deserve a Grammy because they representing the music world and some of them did go on to be major recording artist and Toney Briggs deserve a Grammy of his own as a creative dancer as well as a creative fashion designer let me make it clear you do not have to be a recording artist to receive a Grammy Grammys are given on creativity if music is involved and music is involved in soul train that's why they deserve a Grammy for that creative dance styles off of music 🎶🎶🎶🎶
@@TheBluesmanBlue If you look Grammy up it tells you what makes you eligible to win one and “creativity” is not in there. It only refers to recordings
@@alexisdejamariee3361 I'm glad you asked the question little sister you have a lot of grammy award-winning behind the scenes producers and writers you also have some Grammy award winners who have created sounds I hope that answer your question pretty girl 🌹

What a sweet and encouraging story & person. Persistence is the key to success. Tamechi's courage travelled to a whole new realm.

I use to watch to see what they was Wearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blessings to you....you made my childhood on Saturday Mornings...nice too see who was behind the Fashion

This was one of the top 5 Soul Train Dancer videos that I was waiting for! Congrats Tony Tamechi Briggs!
Whew. Every episode and all these life-changing stories, has been such a fun emotional rollercoaster! Especially stories like Tamechi Toney Briggs, who despite the initial superficial pushback, went on to contribute so much vibrancy and life to our culture at just the right time. So happy to see him thrive and never accepting 'no' for an answer. ✊🏾✨
I’m really so impressed on how helpful the dancers were to each other and the newbies!!
These dancers had their finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry...comedy, hip hop, vocal talent...acting. These stories are utterly insane.
Well , your MC Hammer hanging pants are back in style.
He danced during the era of the best songs!!!!❤
He started the Hammer look? Everybody in their momma had those parachute pants. He's a hidden cultural icon. It's so sad that so many gay black men contributions are hidden and not highlighted as their straight counterparts. Thankfully, times are really changing.

He has a cousin named COOCHIE. Wow! I have heard it all. His story is very interesting
This is the best Soul Train dancer story.
Tamechi is a UA-cam icon. Don’t sleep on her (yes, she). I am so happy to have found this. Because I didn’t know of her impact beyond her single. Wow, thank you!
I swear I was wondering when they were going to interview Tony. My favorite Soul train line was when he came down the line with that chair. Made some of the greatest outfits/costumes for the dancers
This series is going deep into my heart and head! I grew up watching. I'm the youngest in the family. My middle sister and I LOVED it.
So much awe and interest! Thank you to EVERYONE involved!
What a great story! I'm 70 and I remember watching this show religiously! You were way ahead of your time ⏲!! The clothes were awesome and made the 💃 💃 🕺 🕺 stand out and apart!
I loved this story. I remember Tamechi from the Flex & Shanice reality show. I had no idea he had such a huge impact on Soul Train.
He kept them all fly... as he was as well.
Edited: he made the trendsitting iconic MC Hammer pants!!! And it said it so humbly..... throws the device.. he is epic👑👏🏿. Thank you for you contributions to our culture and the world as well. 😘👑🖤
