    I think there's a lot of misunderstanding about fan art. I always treat fan art seriously. Fan art is not just about blindly copying an existing character with a white background. A lot of good fan art these days have artist's own expression in it. We can get inspired by things happening in our own lives but also by works already existing (that might be animations, movies, books, celebrity's personal stories, etc). I often feel so attached to that one particular character, and I am galvanized to make an entire series (comics or graphic novel or illustrations) which has my expression in it. Sometimes it's more like a side story of the original work, but sometimes it's really my own creation. You can hardly tell it's fan art if I don't mention it cuz I borrow the characters from my own perspective. Will that being considered as a NO in art portfolio? That would hurt me a lot. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks!

    • @artprof
      @artprof  2 роки тому +19

      I think you're totally right, there are absolutely ways to turn fanart into an inspired original work. I read lots of doujinshi for instance, and technically many works in art history are tributes to previous artworks that the artist has been inspired by. What we are referring to in this video here is more of the direct copy fanart. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

      It shouldnt be considered a no nó. It has ever been the case that art students would copy Monet michealangelo Manet etc and thats somehow fine. Music students play Mozart etc. Now a modern music student is allowed to play game of thrones music or modern jaxz...what youre doing is the same thing with more modern art. I have seen an art college show with two installations of blank canvasses. So always remember the art world is full of shit. And what you do should always as an artist be more important than what any establishment tells you you should be doing. The essence to me of an artist is someone who represents true self expression. If you want to just draw sqaures and nothing else ever ever ever then thats you as an artist and it does not matter what art college thinks of your art. What matters most is what you are expressing and that you're not doing it to just please others or fit a format laid out for you. When I was a kid those kids who Drew perfect tracings of my little poney were given a lot of credit. I Drew purely from my imagination horses in movement and ballerinas and It was messy and expressive and damn good cos I wasnt copying or using a picture ever...but I never got much praise for it except from my family ...I used to draw chareictures of political leaders too. Lol. Just very quick scribbles...I've always liked the sórt of two lines and a dot and it turns into something if youre in a flow. And only when I went to college did I ever learn that you could copy a picture. Lol!

    I think photo references should be used in the persons art studies or practice than include in their portfolio. Honestly using photos along with drawing from life are the best ways to study art. Because they train your eye to observe than seeing what you draw. I’ve been to museums before and I’ve done observations before using my senses, and it has been helpful to me.

    When you ask family and non-artist friends (because many of my friends are artists and give excellent critiques) One of two things tend to happen; either they say it’s great while being very unspecific or they say it’s terrible this is bad you should give up while being equally on specific. Both of these things are equally and helpful to development as an artist and can waylay your artistic gro

    My photo references are usually crap and to be honest I don't really use them other than to check on stuff like perspective. But after my initial sketch is drawn it's my job to finish the drawing. I decide where the light comes from, how to show the volume of the items, I may even change the colour of things in my drawing to better fit with the rest.

    This is a bit of a stupid question but I can’t seem to find a good answer anywhere. The place where I’m considering applying wants mostly originals. With drawings that’s fine, but I also have a few canvas paintings I’d like to add. Now should I take them off of the canvas and put them in a turn page book kind of style portfolio (which I’d prefer) or take them off and put them in a stack of drawings/paintings folder OR do I leave them on the canvases and give them a huge clunky package? I hope this makes sense, I’m not a native English speaker haha!

    This brings a good question . I had a friend who is going to attempt to get into an art school, although she really doesn’t do well with life drawing. So basically what she did is traced over some photographs she took and made it look like they were the actual thing. As in, she made them look like they were actually decent life drawings (and mind you , it’s quite convincing. ) how do you guys tell apart the traced from the legitimate or is it really impossible to tell ?
    Also , is it possible to get into a prestigious school (more so in an illustration course ) on an all digital portfolio (assuming that all the digital work in on par )

    • @artprof
      @artprof  2 роки тому +8

      Depends on the situation, but obviously some people do get away with it. I will say though that at art schools I have taught at, students were found out for faking portfolios because they simply were not able to keep up with the classes, so I think ultimately you do ending up "making your own bed." In general for BFA programs they don't want an all digital portfolio, they want variety ion both subject and media. -Prof Lieu

As someone who draws in that style and doesn't like to draw realistic humans, will it hamper my chances if I apply with anime, a lot of backgrounds and other perspective studies and all that in my portfolio? What if someone is making art just for the purpose of eye pleasing and escaping the reality ? I don’t think my art has a ‘voice’ since they are just still images. Later on the meaning can be interpreted by the viewer and be written down. Do artists normally paint an image first and write the statement after , or it’s the other way around ?

      Hmm that's a good question! I think collages and things like that might fall into a sort of gray area, where the artist picks and chooses different culture references/images to appropriate in their work. I think it really depends on the specific piece! - Mia, Art Prof Staff

    Can you include drawings with sexual themes? Not depicting sex, but having suggestiveness? I come from a conservative family and I want to have one of my personal pieces be about navigating shame of sex and sexuality, and my idea includes drawing a sex toy. Lol.

      Ah! We used to have a great critique of a painting about navigating sexuality in a conservative family by an artist applying for an MFA, but I can't for the life of me find it! In short, yes, it's okay, you just want to do your research and prep work beforehand! Here's our personal narratives track that might help in developing those skills:

      Keep in mind this video is specific to art school admissions, and that applying to a job is a totally different situation. So advice for this video may not apply in other contexts. -Prof Lieu
