I got art block recently because I was focusing so much on getting better to potentially have a career that I wasn’t having fun. So I decided to draw so badly that it was funny and eventually I just stepped back and found a different approach to getting better.
This is exactly what I was goin through! I was too focused on studying to be better and have a career out of it that it's not fun doing anymore (I think that's when I started having an artblock). I started scribbling again yesterday without a direction and finally did something finished.
I rarely comment but found this treasure of a podcast and brought this was 2 years ago, I’m a 28 year old ‘aspiring’ artist who I always feel like I have a late start and never feel ready but I am finally working on my webtoon it’s been 2nd week of drawing almost nonstop at least 6 hours a day. 18:20 mark, this hits so deep. Seeing popular works on social media do demotivates but once I seriously decide on this journey to force myself to improve, and at least I’m improving bit by bit.
Damn that was inspiration A small tip to younger artists- before taking art as a subject in school (from personal experience, schools have different creative courses) think three times if you really need that qualification cuz u might as well be so burnt out by the end of it that u won’t have time or will to draw for pleasure or personal goals anymore. I’m nearing the end of igcse art and design and I’m probably going to spend the whole summer fixing my relationship with art 💀🤝
This podcast brought me closer to breaking my own art block, everything I'm going through has been stated here and I have, like you said "a great visual of my art block". I started my online career chasing the likes and the gratification. Something I'm trying to convince in myself, is to fill a sketchbook, that NO ONE will see, because the book is meant for my eyes only. To be proud of myself, for myself. I'm almost there, thank you both for providing the last charge into the fray to move forward a better artist and writer!
Man, this episode resonated with me so much. Right off the bat, I related to DD Mark talking about powering through artist's block. It's something I've done so many times while working on those long-term, monotonous projects. I think we should be taking intermittent breaks to hit the reset button every once in a while, but everyone experiences and deals with artist's block differently. Awesome episode, guys! I love listening in.
Ima time stamp 32:16. Because personally I think the point mark makes can help a lot of people. Also, thanks for answering my question( 48:28 ). Mark and Thirds response was very helpful.
For a while art was getting really stressful for me but after listening to these podcast it really gave me the inspiration to continue grinding and to never give up hard work is everything keep up the great work
I have been listening to these podcast while I'm practicing anotomy😌 u guys are so funny and inspiring! Let's go on the GRIND🏃 (this is the ONE of the few ONLY podcast I would turn my music off)
I just want you guys to know. You are so awesome. This podcast really spoke to me. In the end avoiding artblock really goes to the deep insecurities that stop so many wonderful artists. Ty for so much insight.
Ngl I had artblock earlier today before I listened to this and replayed uncharted 2 and after I did I started listening and drawing like a beast. Basically yall are right take a break enjoy yourself and you'll draw good again! Thanks guys!
I've been holding myself back for a long time, thinking I'm not good enough to do commissions. But I guess I'll just go for it. I don't care anymore whether it'll work or not. I'll just go for it. Thank you so much!!!
“If you turn around and go, ‘I am blocked,’ this is just something writers say because we’re really clever. It sounds like it has nothing to do with you: ‘I would love to write today, but I am blocked. The gods have done it to me,’” he said. “And it’s not true. Cellists don’t have cellist block. Gardeners don’t have gardener’s block. TV hosts do not have have TV host block. But writers have claimed all the blocks, and we think it’s a real thing.” - Neil Gaiman

i had this story for a while that i wanted to do because i like animation really bad so i would practice what i learn on youtube and do it then try to draw people and faced now i am drawing shapes like ddmark said and doing that over and over and joining them for a while i always see my character in my head over and over in different scene but i am to scare to draw them because i am not good so the first help will just to rewatch it and applied it
sorry if this is off topic but, when third is coloring is he using multiply layers (or something similar) for the shading or hand picking the color? just curious lol
I run into alot of issues when balancing creating the stuff I want and learning. I feel I always need to improve my fundamentals and neglect cresting my own stuff. I really need to take your advise and just jump to whatever idea I have, I'm never going to be perfect and that's ok. Just do it 🤣
perosnally, right now, i just feel like i have a lack of fellow creative minds to talk to, i don't let that stop me of course, but it does feel like floating in the middle of space, you can go in any direction but you don't have a home planet, a hindering feeling that fight through a bit too often if that makes sense lol
19:01 Yeah, that "aspiring" word cringes me to no bounds. Like, no der sherlock, every artist aspires to be something, right? Also, I do agree to the "not all great artists are great comic artists." That should heavily apply to the abundance of crappy webtoons with "pretty art"
