I meant to thank Trajectory Arms and the Allen Engineering crew for helping with the barrel work, I will go into greater detail later, but the previous owner unfortunately really messed up the barrel for us here and if it weren't for AE and TA, I wouldn't have gotten the muzzle end fixed.
Having owned both over the years, I marginally prefer the Sako for the smooth bolt and lighter weight. However I did not own both of mine at the same time, so I think we absolutely need to have a comparison. However in the name of scientific scrutiny, they have to be the same caliber. Henry will just have to make the sacrifice to pic up another AW in 300 win mag, or a TRG in 308. Its for science...
The point at the end about diminishing returns on optics is so true. There is nothing wrong with building a clone or going with a really high end optic because you have extra cash to blow but if you are looking for cost effective you don't have to spend that much at all. I see too many new hunters think they need to spend huge sums of money to shoot a white tail deer at 200 yards because their favorite UA-cam recommended the optic. What you can get these days for $300-1000 can be incredible value for price. Also yes, we need a VS video between the green meanies.
It's way cooler to stay out of debt, take care of your family and enjoy a cheaper rifle than the opposite. ... also you guys twisted my arm on the green meanies. oh no. I guess we'll have to.
Strapping the Hubble space telescope to your rifle for hunting is dumb as rocks. Doing it because you're a seasoned target shooter who has identified your optics as being your current limiter is another thing entirely. But there are a lot of the former who think they are the latter.
Hervorragende Waffe, hervorragende Munition und nicht zuletzt ein hervorragender Schütze. Eine willkommene Abwechslung zu den ganzen Schönwettersoldaten. Vielen Dank!
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Special Operations Command also uses the Sako TRG.I don't know if it was an M22 or an M10, but the photo was taken during joint training with the US Special Forces. Many Japanese hunters also use Sako hunting rifles.
@@Royalmerc Civilian firearm ownership isn't outright illegal, but is extremely restricted. Weapons in general, which includes both swords and guns, are heavily regulated. For example, the only swords which are legal to own in Japan are those made traditionally, and that is because traditionally-made swords are also considered a work of art. For guns specifically, the main legal uses of firearms are in hunting and target shooting. Manually operated rifles and shotguns are allowed, but pistols and machine-made swords are banned.
@@Royalmerc Japan's gun licensing system is quite strict. Great shooting! Awesome video. I have the TRG22 love the Finnish rifles. Sako 85 L 300wm,Tikka T3 Tactical 300wm, CRT Tikka T3x .308 all exceptional rifles!
My rifles set for 500m point blank, she’s touched out to 2mi before. Freakin love the TRG, only downside is very limited or lacking of aftermarket parts/bolt ons unlike the AI rifles that seem to have nothing but after market.
I've had 5 TRGs (2 X .338LM, 1 X 6.5CM, 1 X .260, 1 X .308) and 3 AIs (AXSA, AXSR, AX50 ELR). I still have the AIs, but I strongly prefer the TRGs. If Sako a) had AI's barrel change technology worked into their rifle (not the M10, but one where any smith can chamber/thread your barrel), and b) made replacement parts 1/2 reasonably-priced, I wouldn't have kept the AIs.
Different trg models are widely used as military/police sniper rifles around globe. Maybe not huge in numbers but pretty much anyone who knows anything about guns have least heard of Sako and tgr.
Really impressive shooting despite the inclement weather. I've always heard good things about Sako rifles, but only ever played with a Tikka, which was really nice. Also, a green meanie shoot off is almost expected now since you have both.
Since 1000yds is considered mid-range for these rifles I'd love to see maybe a one off video where you stretch these out to what would be considered long range. That is, if you have a range where you can do that. Edit: That could be the versus video of the green meanies. That way both rifles can truly show off their long range performance.
When I saw this at First the Mirage Band made me think this was a SV-98 and Not a Sako. Great Rifle though Amazing Run! Seeing this does make me Hope Ya'll do a SV-98 Someday since Henry would be a Damn Good Shot on It.
I've had a TRG42 for 15+ years. Factory chambered in 300 win mag that I shot nearly 5000 rounds thru before it started to open up Took a chance a few years back and rebarreled it in 300prc with a bartlein progressive twist barrel mapped to a factory contour., because i wanted to modernize but was in love with the TRG action. Its unbelievably awesome. Pretty much no Brainer wind calls out to 1200. Shoots tighter than my impact precison 6.5CR.
Hi Henry, please do a comparison video between the two Green Meanies. Also, as a Dane I feel obligated to point out that you once _again_ mention our neighbours, but never us. We use the TRG-42 as well ("Finskyttegevær M/04" in Danish service) - but we are at this point used to not being subjects of your affection. We know we are not Finns, Swedes, Norwegians, Swiss or Austrians, all of whom you love. *Whimper* Please notice us.
Yes, it would be nice to see a comparison between the AW and Sako. There are multiple ways, most popular calibre from both vendors or models. Same calibre. Same optics. "Default" optics on both, etc.
I'm not of Finnish, but Dane, Sweden, Welch decent, but I love what my brothers in the old world contribute to small arms. When you introduced the debrief, I was able to ogle what I believe by the beautiful wood is a Finnish Nagant rifle. Beware Russians if you cross NATO lines!
Good glass matters. 56mm is probably more of the improvement for light gathering. 30mm tubes are starting to grow on me as well. Generally match price tier scope 1:1 with rifle. Too bad they're almost all variable power these days. Just like on my hasselblad, prime lens' can't be beat.
The TRG-42 has made my PP all tingly for at least 25 years, and I have lived in California my whole life if you can imagine what that is like. A friend of mine has an AI in 308 that I have shot and I wasn't all that impressed with it so the comparison video would be cool. For the scope question, unless someone is using a scope in those extreme situations, it is hard to justify the price difference a German optic over a Chinese made optic with Japanese glass as long as there is good enough quality control.
We used exclusively S&B scopes in the FDF for the exact reason that the weather is ... well, Finnish weather. From downpours to blizzards, we need to get the round to the target with lethal results. That's all.
Yeeesssss!!!!!! (Jääkärimarssi intensifies on the background) Also Ukko the thunder god was obviously pleased with You and send his weather to make the accomplishment even more worthy :)
Back in the mid 2000's, I shot the TRG22 and AIAW in 308 side by side and found the accuracy very comparable. Sako just as accurate as the AI and vise versa. I found the ergonomics of the TRG much better than the AI, and the bipod is absolutely phenomenal compared to the AI. I liked that the TRG mag was flush with the stock whereas it sticks out on the AI. For shooting standing you can place your support hand right close to the trigger guard for an excellent stance. Sako did a great job with the TRG series, and it is as good today as 20 years ago. The TRG design has proven to be timeless.
For reasons entirely too nerdy and idiosyncratic to get into, I've been waiting a long time for this (and for Ian to do a video on the B&T MP9). It's been a good week. Edited to add a "yea" vote for the TRG-42 vs. AWM.
Malaysia has both TRG22 and AIAW systems, out of the two I was first issued the TRG, loved it and extremely nice! Then I got issued the AIAW systems to see how compatible they were, they would be eventually integrated along side the SAKO, but I stick with the TRG cause I like it a lot more. And I was less than a year from my discharge so didn’t made sense to swap systems for me
I have shot both and own a trg 22 and the sako wins hands down. The ai is nice but it’s a boat another weight wise and the trg outshoots it with a better weight and balance. Not to mention smoother bolt and mags that don’t clank and rattle. And price wins easy
Sako TRG42 barrels are cold hammer forged... perhaps a tiny bit less accurate but more durable than conventional cut rifling. Accuracy International uses match grade barrel made by cut rifling.
A while ago 9-Hole did a clinical showcase of weapon lights, a masterclass of comparison. Please do another with optics: What capabilities in dusk/dawn does an extra $200, $500, $1000, etc. really get?

From Simo Haya to Sako to the Mosin, the north sure has a knack for snipers and their rifles
I served with TRG-21 and -41 in the FDF Sissi Troops, and there is no better "soul" for a rifle than a Finnish barrel. Par none.
A small nod to the Predecessor TRG-21 would have been appropriate. TRG-22 & 42 did not
just fall out of the sky. They had OG derivatives.
