I was a DEA Special Agent assigned to Los Angeles in 1988-1991. I was assigned the “Colt Pattern 9mm Sub-machine Gun” with a 10” barrel. I had a light saddle with a three C cell Maglite mounted on it. We carried them around in a racket ball case. They had an aluminum tab mounted between the pistol grip and lower receiver that blocked the safe/fire switch from being fully rotated into the full automatic fire position. The tab was designed to be snapped off in an emergency so the weapon could be placed in full automatic fire mode. We would remove the aluminum tabs at the range so we could qualify with them in full auto, and then replace them. I never saw any of the integrally suppressed models. Fun times.
When I was in the National Guard in the late 2000s, we had those little aluminum lockout tabs for our M16s and M4s, for use during state duty deployments. I guess they didn't want us lighting up looters with burst. 🤷♂️
Carried a 635 from 1996 to 2000 in SWAT. I remember when you accidently dropped those mags partially or fully loaded, all the rounds would spit out. We were using double clamp mags. They were fun to shoot.
I dreamed of having a Colt 9mm smg on swat until we bought some used MP5s from our County swat team. Nope, fell in love and never looked back. Built a 9mm AR a couple of years ago, still fun.
So i have one of these in 10.5 with a maximum defense roller delay buffer and it tames the recoil amazingly! Now after mounting a carry handle mounted trijicon mro, putting a Surefire light and running 1k rounds of Winchester 115gr military over run m1152 through it it's now my new bed side gun
FYI, the first run of H&R 9mm lowers where rollmarked, not laser. I also had to look at mine twice, because it is the cleanest rollmark I have ever seen, but if you compare next to a laser engraved lower it's obvious the letters are indented and there is some variation in depth. Mike has confirmed this online if you search through the forums.
Seems to be the season of the AR-9! I just finished pitting together my first last month. I went with a KE Arms KE-9 upper, but chose to mate it with a Maxim Defense roller delayed buffer system. Couldn’t be happier.
@@FirstLast-ff7qx You can't go wrong with a Stribog, nice guns. Henry's complaints about the original Colt 635's are very valid. We had issues with pins breaking, also sometimes the 3-shot burst was a two shot, or, even if you got all 3 off, it would string upwards due to the heavier recoil over the MP-5. I never used the giggle switch for serious work, I kept it on semi-auto. I was (and still am) accountable for where every round hits. I've got a SBR'd Colt 6951. Neat little gun, a bit quirky, really quite accurate with Fed 147gr HST at 100 yards. While it's not bad it isn't difficult to see why it got absolutely smoked by the MP5 on the military/LE market. I stopped the handguard/cap rotation issue by putting the cut off stub of a gas tube through the handguard cap into the front sight base (the 6951 front sight still has a hole to accommodate a gas tube like a standard AR.) Might consider getting a suppressor for it to at least make it somewhat relevant.
In the LE world, lots of SRT units used the Colt, because we couldnt afford the MP5. I never felt undergunned, but I only fired it in practice and quals
When Josh says "notoriously bouncy", he ain't lying... Firing one of those puppies in full auto is like riding a jackhammer! Complete with cartoonishly chattering teeth 😬
I just finished my form 1 build of one and it’s awesome. When I got my form 1 back I got a KAK 9mm barrel for it and had a fsb put on it. The KAK barrel feeds better than the h&r barrel.
Just bought a 6951 this summer, I was actually pleasantly surprised. The mag block roll pins appear have some locktite applied to them, there was no reciever wobble. And I bought an H+R 635 upper. Super happy all around!
Have a genuine DOE upper with colt gray lower using a Maxim roller delay buffer system and it's awesome to shoot, shot it with a super safety before and it was surprisingly easy to keep on target in bursts even for someone inexperienced with uh, "high rate of fire" like me lol
Another great video, thanks for making it. I have a 1995 Colt Sporter Lightweight (R6430) in 9mm with a 10.5 in barrel (Switzerland does not have this SBR nonsense). I changed the A2 buttstock for a collapsible one, put an old Tasco ProPoint red dot on an ARMS M16 A1 A2 mount, and a B&T impulse II suppressor on it. It’s a looker, a hoot to shoot. And quite accurate at 50 meters.

I wonder what the LE agency price difference was between the Colt and H&K? Besides the obvious familiarity advantage the Colt would have among former military, a big difference in cost could be why the 635 was so popular.
I remember being surprised at the recoil of the first (blowback) 9mm PCC that I shot. I expected virtually nothing when compared to something like a 7.62x39. Nope.

I SBRed a standard lower with adapter to do a DOE clone. Main reason over the H&R lower… if I wanted to convert to 5.56, I could. Bolt that came with the upper was garbage, where it would barely run. Ordered the H&R 10.5” and use the bolt between the two; flawless. I like the 10.5” better than DOE. Just feels better.
I lived through that era. The Colt 32 round 9mm mags are a PITA to fully load due to the bolt hold open tab. Give me an MP5 in spite of the Teutonic ergos.
It seems that CZ is directing Colt into making Fudd guns instead of vibe guns. What they really should be doing is making both Fudd guns and vibe guns and CZ guns in the Colt facility, including Vz 61 and CZ 97B.
As a full auto SMG I suspect these would run a lot better if they used a Colt LMG lower and and an open bolt to take advantage of advanced primer ignotion.
My AR9 just went down hard at a training class on Sunday. I believe I had an out of battery discharge. The case split and the projectile and part of the cartridge case is stuck in the chamber. The primer end of the case exploed.
I made a pcc that’s a 4inch barrel with a law folder and insert that goes in the magwell. I’d love to see you guys shoot it vs what you have because I think it’s VERY flat.

I wonder if its possible to swap front sight gas blocks on the 635 and place a section of gas tube to lock in the Surefire handguards in place? Also I wonder if the 635's lower would interface with the CMMG radially delayed 9mm upper? 🧐🎩
