The Sauer 200 STR may not be a household name in the USA, but it certainly is a regular sight at the Norwegian Stangskyting scene. This is a competition where shoots essentially mag dump onto targets with bolt action rifles and iron sights, which yielded one of the most versatile shooting systems... and SIG Sauer turned it into a sniper rifle: the SSG 3000.
Designed way ahead of it's time, the SSG 3000 is a bolt-action, detachable magazine rifle with a user-serviceable barrel (easy barrel swaps) and is chambered in .308, but we re-chambered this rifle back to it's 6.5x55mm roots to shoot the ye-old swedish cartridge on steroids: the 6.5x55 SKAN.
How does it do? You likely know that it's cleared the course with zero misses already, but witness the kind of sniper rifle comes from a high-level competition rifle pedigree, with such a forward thinking design that it's manufacturer struggled to explain it to end users.

Hey guys i made a noob mistake of assuming the UK Land model for the L96 was the year... I know better, but still made the mistake in the dialogue regardless.
I'm here to clarify that the L96 was a product of the 1980's and the AW was a late 80's modification.

I had a Husqvarna made M38 and fell in love with 6.5X55mm Sweetie Mau way before everybody was climbing over each other for the latest 6.5mm.
I would love to build a short action chambered for this caliber over the Creedmore even though I would be giving up further range for less throat erosion.
Iv'e own a 6.5 Swede for at least 40 years and have used it on everything that walks or hops here in Australia and found that using the right pills from 90gn HP at 3180 fps up to 140sp doing 2800 fps that if it is feral it's in peril which suits me fine.
Even today it still makes Lapua Magnum shit its pants

I have two rifles in this caliber. One is a Swedish Mauser made in I think 1917, and it’s extremely accurate. The other is a Ruger Hawkeye African. I have had it for a few years but haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. Still, it looks good. Anyway, I like this cartridge. Soft shooting and it’s easy to find ammo that isn’t super expensive. The Mauser is in exceptional condition and I paid only $60 for it in 1998.

the 200str still lives good here in scandinavia as the competition rifle for DFS and a common first rifle in PRS.
you mentioned options for cartridges and compared the 6,5x55 too the creedmoor. i know people here push the x55 to creedmoor pressure and gets more speed than it that way. an other thing worth mentioning, is that the 6.5x55 is one of the cartridges that really see good improvements from reaming to ackley improved ;) i hope we see more of these rifles on the channel!
Just like them basically making the 260 remington again with the 6.5 creedmoor which was already a higher pressure 6.5 .308 cartridge basically doing the same thing decades beforehand
there is no reason not to run 6.5x55 at creedmoor pressures.. But even 6.5 CM with max pressures tend to pop primers..

Yeah, I'm a 6.5x55 at CM pressures guy. It makes an awesome 1,000m rifle, even with a short 20" barrel (Tikka).
When I get it re-barrelled then an AI would be tempting, although 6.5 PRC probably meets that role these days.
If Remington had made the original 260 Rem with the proper (fast) twist, then maybe the Creedmoor wouldn't exist 🙂
6.5CM at high pressures is helped by running cases with small rifle primers to give it more support in the case head.
The SSG is just such a cool rifle. I love the olive plastic stock.
There are SSG 69 rifles still used in combat. And I think the Austrian army still uses them.
The olive plastic is why I had to get its midget brother the scout.
I've been a fan of the 6.5x55 since the early 90's when we were buying M96 Mausers from Century Arms for $69 each. I think the 200 round battle packs of their military ball ammo (which was all match grade) sold for $29. I'm down to my last 2 boxes of that ammo.
I know we now have the 6.5 Creedmore which is at least as good as match grade 6.5 Swede, but I still want to have a modern custom rifle built in the Swede.
I picked up a M38 Swede from my neighbor who unfortunately had it drilled & tapped for Leupold bases and had a new bolt handle welded on to clear the scope. As much as it hurt to see a rifle in close to perfect shape modified like that, it is a shooter as accurate as any basic modern rifle, and I get more use out of it in this configuration anyway. Now I just need a club with a longer range to shoot it to its, and my, full potential.
Just be aware that the chamber design was changed somewhere around 1990, so the newer SE, SKAN versions have shorter throats and a slightly higher chamber pressure. SAAMI made this same change in 1993. In Europe, they differentiate between 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and the other versions and ammo spec'd for one design may not shoot well in the other.
Go for a Tikka T3 action in 6.5x55SE, you will not be disappointed :)

The man in the thumbnail is a very well known Norwegian shooter named John Olav Ågotnes, he shoots the same disiplines as i with the same rifle, the 200 STR. great rifle

Also if you only run factory ammo the 6.5 Creedmoor has the same velocities from a smaller case that fits in short action, that's because the pressure rating for the 6.5x55 is a fair amount lower. You'd have to reload 6.5x55 over is normal pressures to surpass the 6.5CM in performance.
@@joshjamesguitar Oh for sure, I'm not saying 6.5 Creedmoor is worse, I'm just saying that the only real difference if you're not hotrodding the 6.5 Swede is that the 6.5 Creedmoor fits in a short action, which opens up more platforms it can run in.
6.5x55 was the first rifle I purchased when I was 16. Still have it 42 years later and still love it. Balls on accurate.

the story of the LRD chassis (featured here in two still photos) is actually very interesting as well. Sig Sauer bought the rights to produce the chassis from the two swedish guys who had started the project to support their hobby, milling chassis in their spare time. Sig Sauer marketed the rifle as the 200 Phoenix.

I have 6,5x55SE Tikka T3. Very nice caliber. I wanted that caliber, because it is nordic. Now I have gun, made in Finland in nordic caliber😊
Yeah. That cartridge has served us very well, and now we´re getting the 338LM for the longer takes. Made in Finland.
Rifles are a permit matter to me, but truth be told i´ve given in on the 338LM and actually applied for a permit for a RPR.
Remains to see where that´ll take me.

6.5x55 is probably the longest served rifle cartridge in existence. Its still extremely popular today and i dont see it going away any time soon.

I live in Sweden , the STR 200 in cal.6.5×55 is the most common target rifle at 300 meters , it must shoot below 45mm spread at 300 meters ,
Norma makes a special target load 6.5×55 that they sell to all Skandinavien shooting clubs fore the cheapest price they can , if you are using Norma Diamond ammo that have black tefloncoatoting then the barrel will endure twice the amount of bullets before worn out ,
Have heard you get worse accuracy with the Diamondline ,

We get 21mm three shot groups with Diamond Line at Hacksjöbanans 300m range, so no worse accuracy there.
Man, I wish 6.5x55 was more popular here in the States. Absolutely love this cartridge, but it's difficult to find rifles chambered in it aside from the usual m96's, m38's etc and the occasional Sako, Tikka or Remington hunting rifle build.
I couldn’t agree more. I have a M38 with a rough barrel, but it still shoots pretty well with iron sights. I really think this is a great round.

just some clarification, the 200 STR was not designed specifically for stangskyting, it was designed for precision target shooting with iron sights. stangskyting is only a sort of bonus discipline in Norway, we often refer to it, and Felthurtig as "texas shooting"
Felthurtig is another discipline which requires a shooter to go prone and shoot down three separate targets at different ranges in the shortest amount of time.
Also, the dualing part is mostly done in Felthurtig, not stangskyting. stangskyting is only the one with the most hits on the targets gets the victory.

@@9HoleReviews To add on to this: Stangskyting is named after Colonel Georg Stang, and is a discipline meant to simulate the shooters performing an ambush from a set position. The discipline is split into two sets of 25 seconds, where you must get as many hits as possible. One set is on the short target, and the second on the longer target. You start with 6 rounds in the weapon, and each additional mag holds 5 rounds. To my knowledge the best shooters have gotten around 21 hits on the short target, and 18 on the long one, but that's incredibly hard and rarely seen. This will also depend on the range of the targets and weather conditions. Felthurtig on the other hand, is meant to simulate the shooters getting ambushed from a standing position. Standing, kneeling and prone are legal shooting positions in Felthurtig, but most shooters go prone for increased accuracy. The best shooters can get all 3 targets down in less than 6 seconds.
Anyone else think it would be cool to see Henry & Josh do the Texas Plinking 1 MOA @ 1000yd challenge. It’s almost surprising they haven’t gone on since they’re both in Texas.
That was awesome. As a 6.5mm fan, regardless of variation, I absolutely loved this video. A Swedish Mauser is one of my grail guns. I have no experience with the 6.5X55 Swede but I've read so much good about it that I already love the caliber.

It's the rifle and cartridge I learned to shoot with over iron sights as a 15yo in 1999.

I had one of these. Sold it and got a TRG-22. The TRG has only one point over the SSG, a ten round mag. The SSG one over the TRG, the quick change barrel. Both excellent rifles.

The Sauer 200 (not the STR) is chambered in 3-06, 7x64, 9.3x64, 270, 7x57 and other rounds. Almost the same action (interchangeable barrels).
The SSG 3000 Patrol stock is actually pretty decent.
There were 10 round single column magazines available, long ago. Sig Mil side had some out of a Czech distributor.

6.5x55mm (6.5 Swedish)
The 6.5 is a very old cartridge that has always been extremely popular in Europe, and for good reason. It has been an excellent long range competition cartridge with excellent 6.5 bullets available. There have also been companies such as Lapua and Norma that have always loaded superb match grade ammo for it. Over the years I have become a fan of this cartridge based off of its history, pleasant shooting qualities, and great long range accuracy.
Unfortunately, the 6.5x55 has never really been considered for much long range shooting in the USA, although to serious long range shooters and European shooters its no real surprise at how well this cartridge does. In the USA there was a brief bit of interest in this cartridge a few years ago but the thing that has hurt it recently is the introduction of the short action 6.5 cartridges such as the 260 Remington, 6.5x47 Lapua and 6.5 creedmore. These all produce performance on par with the USA loaded 6.5x55 ammo, but in a short action.
But, you see, the 6.5x55 actually has more case capacity than the others but because there are so many very old rifles built and chambered for this cartridge, most of the ***USA manufacturers are not willing to load this cartridge to its potential***. Instead of labeling the ammo *modern firearm use only* they have decided to handicap everyone using the 6.5x55.
In Europe, this is not a problem so Lapua, Norma and others load it to much higher velocities. HSM here in the USA is also working on a hot version of the 6.5x55 with the sierra 142 SMK as well and that should be out very soon and readily available for the USA shooters.
The 6.5 has long been known for its excellent accuracy and absurdly high ballistic coefficients. With some of the European loads available and with HSM introducing a full capacity load, the 6.5 can be seriously considered for sniping. Additionally, I can really see the benefits for Law Enforcement applications, as it generally shoots a lighter bullet then the .308, but heavier then the .243, falling nicely right in between. The 6.5 deserves consideration for military application also, and has been chambered in some older military sniper rifles (WWII vintage).
The round actually outperforms the .308 match loads in both the 168gr and 175gr, and its less susceptible to wind and arrives on target with as much energy at ranges over 600 yards. The penetration should be good as well with the superior sectional density of the 6.5 bullets. The only other problem I can see is the lack of sniper grade weapons chambered for the 6.5. But most of the custom sniper rifle manufacturers will chamber their rifles in any caliber the purchaser wants (Sometimes for a small additional fee). Hopefully rifle manufacturers will realize the great potential of the 6.5 and start to produce their sniper rifles in 6.5x55, though with the popularity of the other 6.5 short action cartridges, I doubt this will happen.
Recommendation: The 6.5x55m makes a very good Law Enforcement round as well as a very capable military sniping cartridge. When using the heavier bullets the round is excellent at ranges up to and potentially beyond 1000 meters far out performing the 308 rounds.

A Tikka with an MDT chassis with Lapua factory (139gn) factory ammo is a laser, although the velocity is a bit light.
Loading it to Creedmoor like pressures will get another 100 m/s (330fps).
The 6.5x55 was extremely popular when long range and PRS shooting took off here in Sweden but now the 6mm calibers rule those disciplines. It's still used in the old disciplines that only has that as an option but that is slowly dying. 6.5CM does pretty much everything 6.5x55 does but in a short action so there is little reason to use a 6.5x55 for practical reasons when selecting a new gun. Here the 6.5x55 norma diamond line rounds costs much less match 6.5CM so for those that don't shoot much the old caliber can make sense. There are no good 10 round magazines for 6.5x55, only mag extensions that don't work in all chassis/stocks so it's handicapped in PRS. There are also not a lot of stocks and chassis for a 6.5x55 action. I have mine in a McMillan stock that is long discontinued but otherwise there is not much and no new products are coming.
More and more police and military adopt the 6.5CM, mostly in gas guns for DMR and sniper use. For them the bolt action rifles are using magnum calibers since they fill different roles. There really are few places for 6.5x55 outside of enthusiasts, hunters and those that already have one or value the cheap ammo.
@@wtfimagination Yeah, I have thousands of Norma cases available, so it made sense for me and Lapua bullets are pretty reasonable in 6.5. You're right on the magazines too.

the "proto chassis" to me is kind of the grandfather of SIG (us) doing the P320 and 365 FCU you can buy and build out custom made to your liking and have a few different size handguns and maybe calibers with just one FCU. Pretty wild they did this in the 90s without any aftermarket wanting to support it that much and also wild how it seems like it would flourish today with how custom and combo builds everyone like to do out of 1 gun.

Stangskyting is a pretty interesting. If you watch older competitions in the 80s, guys were still using modified Krag Jørgensen rifles with speed loaders. Super cool

looking at the replay, I can clearly see the lateral frag line. No maybe about it, THAT WAS CLEARLY A HIT!
I use the 6,5x55 Swed from 1984 and nothing can beat it within the non magnum caliber. I loaded a 160grain hornady roundnose for my dear hunt. It hit the center at 100 meter. I also had the 140grain nostler that I used for longer range. This hit the center at 200meter without adjusting the sight. At long range I had time to reload the chamber with the nostler. I had 2 inch collection at 200 meter with my sako finnbear even with a limit of training.
What I really liked about this video was the old - presumably Swedish - guys firing bolt action precision rifles really fast and getting (apparently) good hits on target at medium ranges. I have to admit its a bit of hobby horse of mine having been trained many years ago to rapid fire bolt action precision rifles (enfield mk 4)

The tapperd 6.5x55 needs a «banana» type mag to feed reliable for 10 round capasity.

6.5x55 is probably one of the cheapest cartridge we run i Norway, due to the 200 str beeing the most common target rifle in Norway.

That is some really good shooting and spotting by you Henry and Josh! My shooting club in Stockholm still rocks three 200 STRs in 6,5x55mm mainly with Vortex PSTs on top. With Normas Diamond Line Moly cartridges, we achieve 21mm three shot groups at 300m and everything above 50mm is frowned upon.
Really nice to see you stretch it out to a 1000y and getting good hits. By end of september we will go to the local military firing range to atleast go to 600 m and try to get good hits. Will keep you updated. 👍

Your comments about SiG Sauer USA screwing up the marketing are absolutely true. I was on a civil rifle team in the late 90s and early 2000s, and this rifle was exactly what we were looking for when we were buying new club rifles in '98-'99. Since they would have been club rifles (used for newer shooters who didn't have their own yet, or hadn't done that discipline much yet), and expected to swap barrels and cartridges between shooters borrowing them they would have been great. Most of us used 30-06 at the time and we even had one guy who shot 6.5x55 handloads because he'd started with surplus Norwegian Krags, but there were others using .308 and some other niche stuff so the options on this would have been great!
But we didn't know these rifles were even options when we were shopping, and it doesn't sound like the company would have worked with us to get all the spare components we would have wanted even if we had.

Just as an afterthought, before the Vision chassis, a Norwegian company called GRS made the GRS Bolthorn chassis for the STR 200/SSG 300. No longer in production as far as I know, but one of the better chassis for prone shooting out there for the STR 200/SSG 3000.
Ive run a 1941 6.5 for years and have always given the new improved cal shooters I know a serious run for their money. I was challenged by a good friend who got sucked into the creed dream and almost lost a friendship over the results. Given I shoot handloads and he was burning factory rounds the age difference in the rifles should have seen him grease me , but you know old age and skullduggery will always win over youth and exuberance . :) Great video as always gents.

I love how, on the 1000 yard shots, Henry had the next round chambered before the bullet impacted.
My cousin was a sharp shooter in the Swedish Military prior to WW2. One course was 3.000 meters.
Shooting prone, the target was over the horizon, there was a stick at 100 meters that lined up the shooters position with the target. The target was 9 meters square and set at a 45 degree angle to the ground as the bullets were coming in on quite and arc from extreme elevation.
AND, this was with open sights! My cousin had many trophies from those years. He and his family moved the US after the war and that is where I saw them.

I campaign a STR2oo. Around here they´re to this day as available as they come, and albeit per design a tad old by now they still deliver beyond what most can imagine.
As Henry&Josh bring up there´s since a good while the so called "Jet chassis" system, and as much as it´s no doubt a very viable option please also keep in mind that for a looooong time so called 300 meter Mauser was the reign.
This through decades and was for a very long time the largest sport to us there was. Nothing even came close.
Hence that many a STR is used with it´s walnut or laminate stock to this day, mine incl, but as they´re SO simple to "dress up" for instance with a Jet chassis is really is two different guns all said.
As Henry shows in bits the development on suppressors has come a long way. I personally run a by me modified Stalon, which again is something that lets me shoot the at times high speed 6,5´s sans hearing protection. It´s kind of a.. rather weird experience as the gun sounds off as little as it does.
I'll give you 4.5 out of 5 on that bonus run, Henry 😄
Have been a huge fan of the 6.5 Swede for 20 years (and of the Sauer 200/STR because they make a lefty version!) so this was a treat. Hope it was as much fun as it looked 😀

Isn’t it funny how firearms somewhat go full circle. We certainly aren’t back to black powder muskets, but the 80s and 90s seemed to have peaked the firearms industry. I personally rather have this Sig over a MCX

I love Sigs and own many old Sigs. I don’t hear many problems with old school Sigs, but I seem to hear a lot of bad about literally the same models, like my P229, but American. The point being that today’s Sig quality does not necessarily match old Sig. I did not necessarily mean application. The same could be said about an HK PSG1.
I also believe the overall quality in firearms in general used to be better. Most products today are about output per year rather than quality. Just my thoughts. I could be wrong.

These were heavily marketed here in Australia and I know a few people bought them. I never had the pleasure to shoot one but I handled one at my mates Gun Shop they are a very nice piece of kit. My mate owned several Sako TRG's and other big $$$ rifles at the time and considered these a great in between rifle.

Swede... It was a joint Swedish-Norwegian commission. The Swedes wanted a rimmed cartridge, but the Norwegians were able to convince them.

I love my Sig Sauer SSG 3000 that had the new American stock it which was at the 20:01 part of the video. In one review in UA-cam the author claimed it doesn’t like hornady match bullets… and it’s true in mine as well.

Stand corrected AW also glued receiver to chassis like L96a1 green meanie, even though most other chassis the receiver is removable from the chassis. SSG-3000 was introduced in 92, possibly earlier but production catalogued as early as 92 and L96a1 intro into UK military was in the mid 80s, 87 at the latest, (pre M24 introduction but after M40a1 introduction).
Sig did make an attempt at a regular hunting rifle version of this.

Fantastic shooting and an interesting discussion! Your comparison of how the stock/"chassis" system works was particularly cool having read all of Stephen Houghton's books on the L96. Seeing it side by side helped me understand that a lot better than I did just reading a description in the books.
But speaking of I have a minor correction. At 30:40 ish Henry infers that the L96 designation refers to the year it was adopted/developed. The AI PM rifle won the MoD competition in 1985 but large scale production and issue took a while after that. The L numbers have no bearing on which year they were introduced (eg L1A1, L129A1 etc.) I'm sure you're probably already aware just misspoke!
The Germans got a bit of a shock when they invaded Norway and met an army filled with active sports shooters using the Krag with 6.5 swede cartridges.
When it comes to Norwegian police and military snipers here we do not use the 6.5 cartridge. Delta has used the ssg3000 chambered in 7,62x51. So yeah rifle been used, but not in 6,5. Our police as well as our military is very uniformed when it comes to weapons. As for sniper rifles the VS 84 S/NM 149 7,62x51 and Steyer SSG 08-A1 has been used, but will be replaced after problems with the rifles. (they just went of without people even holding them.) New rifle will be the DD m5 rifles. As for the Military its the Barrett rifles in 7,62x51 338LM and 50cal with the HK 417 as a DMR rifle. Its late and i might have forgotten something. But think i remembered to add most of the info here.

The 6,5x55 is not a Swedish cartridge, it's a Scandinavian cartridge. Well a Swedish-Norwegian cartridge. And most of the credit should go to the norwegians, that insisted that the case should be rimless, while the swedes wanted a rimmed round. It took convincing from Mauser, to get the swedes to realise that the swedes were wrong and the norwegians were right. As for the M94/96 rifles, they became as good as they were, because the norwegians were hellbent on getting Krags, and they brought up every little detail, that they didn't like with the Mauser, resulting in a much better rifle for Sweden (and also also the M98), while the Norwegians still got the inferior Krag in the end.
Gauge blocks were also developed as a direct result of Carl Johansson, a Carl Gustav armorer inspector, wanting to improve on Mauser Oberndorfs precision in manufacturing.
It is a Swedish cartridge. Norway was granted its independance in 1905, the cartridge was adopted by the military in 1894, whilst under Swedish rule, hence it's a Swedish cartridge.
@@turbo_vanner Yes, and that invention was one of the most important ones of the era. Without it, assembly lines of compley pieces of machinery (like cars), would have been next to impossible. Hence why the founder of Cadillac, Henry M. Leland said "There are only two people I take off my hat to. One is the president of the United States and the other is Mr. Johansson from Sweden".
@@snailswrath Norway was not under Swedish rule. Norway for instance had their own government, army, navy and constitution. From 1830 foreign policy was also handled jointly. It was a personal union with a common head of state. I could perhaps be compared to the UK and Canada during the interwar period. The actual productive design work on the cartridge, was done by the norwegians, while the swedes were busy not aggreing with the norwegians and opting for a obsolete rimmed design, until Mauser demonstrated the superiority of the norwegian design.

Back at least 20 years ago, the MassaTwoShits State Police STOP Team (their SRT team) had these rifles, obviously in .308. They traded them for Rem 700's because they said there was a fault in the design. I call BS and that they just wanted new rifles. They said if the rifles were in the rain and got soaked, then the temp dropped below freezing, the triggers would freeze and the rifles wouldn't fire. Well no shit! It must have taken a f-ing genius to figure out that if you fill a trigger mechanism and bolt with water, then freeze it, the parts don't move anymore!
I have trained with the STOP Team and the members I interacted with were skilled, but complaining that a rifle that's basically frozen in a block of ice no longer functions is a damn joke.
I happen to own, and compete, with a 200STR. Living in Scandinavia, do you hear yourself?

6.5x55 se is my all time favorite cartridge. I've had many rifles chambered in it and still do. Bang for the buck, get a Tikka Varmint in 6.5x55 and install your favorite optic, absolutely fantastic package without breaking the bank, ask me how I know. I recommend Athlon Aries or Cronus as semi budget scopes or Nightforce, Steiner ect. if you want to spend more $$$$$$

The STR was NOT designed to shoot the american «6.5x55 Swedish mauser» (SAAMI) - it was designed to shoot the 6,5x55 in its SKAN version.
