Conceptually a great idea, well thought out , executed & a professional looking finished product. However, there are two areas of concern that I feel could be improved. The main concern is that all the longitudinal travel loads are being taken by the small stepper motor bearings. It appears to be a Nema 17 with integrated lead screw. Although these stepper motors with integrated lead screw are designed to take end load, they are not designed for the type of forces being exerted on them by your system. The second area of concern is the 'ball guide' system used for the alignment of the piston assembly very quickly wearing with alignment issues for the slotting cutter.
could 1. be resolved with the addition of a thrust bearing to handle the axial loads, or would the rigid coupling between the leadscrew and stepper still result in too much axial loads being transmitted to the stepper? (I'm not an engineer... yet.) for 2. , I'd like to know what a suitable solution would be. The first thing that comes to my mind is a linear guide rail, but I'm assuming there's another solution of a smaller footprint.
@@seleniumshutter 1: "(I'm not an engineer... yet.)" Keep thinking like that & you soon will be. The 2 most important question you can ask are Why? & How? Question everything ! The stepper motor needs to be totally isolated from the longitudinal load via a flexible coupling & thrust bearing used on the separate (isolated) lead screw to take the considerable forces applied to drive the cutter into the piece being machined. However, this would also mean a considerable increase in the size of drive section which also defeats one of the desirable criteria of the project (compact size). 2: There is a big difference between good engineering & over engineering. Using a linear guide rail would alleviate the issue but at a considerable increase in the size & cost of producing the project with minimal gain. The basic principle used for the guide pin is sound, however, the execution could be improved. The ball only contacts at 1 'concentrated point'. Using a simple square ended guide pin (brass / bronze) in place of the ball would would spread the concentrated wear area exerted by the ball resulting in a much longer life before maintenance is required. With the current design the ball is also the harder of the 2 materials which means the shaft will suffer all the wear. Standard engineering practice when designing for wear is that you make the easiest part to replace the sacrificial piece (softest material). Which is easier? To manufacture a new guide shaft or to manufacture a small brass/bronze round key. Purchase a small brass solid bar of appropriate size, cut a short length off, done. Actually you might even spend another 30 seconds while you are making one & cut yourself a lifetime supply of spares :)
@@JustMe-dx5xl I had just that problem when designing the X axis drive on my CNC Router table and opted to use a single ball bearing in a dimple at the end of the lead screw. This has worked well and does not need any adjustment over time i.e. no appreciable wear - it does have an adjuster to aid setting up the preload.
Awesome build! I think this is the most compact toolpost 'power tool' I've seen. Btw, I think you should be able to get rid of the whine from the motor by configuring the motor driver to use microstepping.

FYI this is called keyway broaching. Slotting is something different. They make broaches for this kind of thing that you can use with a simple press and are much quicker. While I applaud your design, it is neat, it's got many problems which others have alluded to and would struggle with hard materials like steel and take forever. I'm assuming this was aluminum in the example.
These machines are usually called slotting machines or slotting attachments, they are also sometimes called broaching machines but if you were looking to purchase something for your lathe or mill then "slotting" would be the keyword to search with. The two phrases broaching and slotting are mostly interchangeable but there is some nuance: Slotting is the application, whereas as broaching is the act of pushing a broach through or against a workpiece. A broach is customarily a multi-tooth cutting tool, or single-tooth for a rotary broach, because the tool cuts to its full depth in a single pass, whereas slotting is an incremental machining operation. They are not fully distinct and separate operations with no conceptual overlap, after all a shaper machine is not normally called a broaching machine even when being used to cut a slot. For my money I'd argue that Maker B named their beautiful project work correctly, it's a great complimentary tool to go with the nice precision Sherline lathe :)
The broaching is done with a long tool with a large number of teeth, where each tooth is larger than the previous one, and this is meant as one operation.

Broaches are expensive and in my experience prone to failure.

Интресная штука неплохо было бы скетчь и схему приложить. Вдруг когдато пригодиться
simplified method is use pneumatic cylinder instead of stepper motor
Turning brass tube at the same diameter after reprising it to the other side whitout centering is impossible.
What mini lathe is that?

Sherline
I personally love to have it 😅 great feelings ❤
You could made it powering with USB.
hes using an external driver, which take more than 5v 2A, of which more would be needed anyway under these loads
Nice idea and execution. But that motor sound... please change the driver. Put a digital driver.
