Spider-Man 64 was my first ever game. My dad surprised me with it one evening when I was 5 years old. Seeing this game again for the first time it years… wow. What good memories
Fully agreed, the comic book style cutscenes worked for Ultimate Spiderman, but yeah Spiderman ps1 or Spiderman 2000 as i knew it as a kid needs the full cutscenes.
I love that you call Spider-Man on the N64 Spider-Man 64. Me and my siblings did the same and it was also what made us fall in love with the wall crawler.
Spider-Man ps1, ps2 and gamecube were my childhood. The amount of rage i had running from Doc Ock with that janky backwards camera and being a dumb a kid who thought i could only do one save per save file slot. I didnt know you could over write saves so i beat the game and got every costume by no lifing the game and keeping my playstation on over night til i beat it and they did a new save.
One of my first memories is playing Spider-Man on the ps1. Loved it so much. It also made me a hugeeeee Spider-Man fan and then Rami pushed that to a whole new level😂
Your section of Spider-man(2000) made me so nostalgic and emotional. Like you, my parents didn’t have a lot of money growing up either. When I was a kid, we didn’t get a PS2 until well into its life cycle. So my first ever video game experience, was on my older brother’s PS1. I don’t remember if we already had the game or if my parents bought it for me, but we had a copy of Spider-man for it. I didn’t have comics either (until much later in my childhood) so my first exposure to Spider-man, was the first Raimi movie, and this game. We didn’t have a memory card, so I would just play the opening section over and over again. I played through the whole game when I was a little older. But that game means so much to me, so nice to see other fans had a similar experience to me growing up!
Ultimate Spider-Man is easily my favorite pre-Insomniac title. Visually, it's easily aged, probably the best of any of the Activision stuff, and mechanically it probably had the most skill-based web swinging and combat of any of those games. It was also really cool having Venom as a playable character whose story happened in parallel with Parker. In general it seems like Insomniac took the most notes out of this game's gameplay and just the Ultimate Spider-Man universe in terms of how they made their own take on the character. Playing Spider-Man 2 right now and having a blast
It was always tragic how movie fans spent years praising Spider-Man 2 as the best Spidey game of all time when they never even paid attention to Ultimate Spider-Man. I like a Spidey game that’s not hamstrung by a movie license. Ultimate Spider-Man FEELS like a game actually set in the Marvel universe. From Wolverine to Human Torch to Silver Sable… You were in a rich universe with Ultimate Spidey. The BEST open-world Spider-Man game until 2018!!! …Web of Shadows did put in a strong showing though.
Dude Ultimate Spiderman was the game I played the most on my Gamecube. It was so good. Agreed this screams remaster. I'd buy it instantly. Classic video game.
Just bought it from a used game store the other day and threw it into my 360 to play for a few hours. Can attest that it still holds up and 100% worth it if you still have an og xbox/360/ps2
As a 22 Year old man… playing the new Spider-Man 2 2023 on my 2nd play through.. it’s a crazy feeling.. seeing how it started to NOW!!.. it’s beautiful., it’s honestly heart warming too and crazy to see all these older childhood gems still being talked about and appreciated.. My first real introduction into the Spiderman games were both SpiderMan Friends & Foe plus the original spider-man 2/3 games.. beautiful games. 😊
Mr Retro Rebound your way of explaining these games of what you liked and disliked about them was so good and satisfying to me to know what to expect and be cautious about certain Spidey games.
Man Matt you always know how to bring nostalgic in gaming because Spider-Man PS1 and Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions are both my nostalgic type of games as a child throughout my teen years
Nostalgia. I remember that I got this game alongside with Digimon World 3 on the original PlayStation console system back in early 2003 in my late childhood years.
Spiderman 2 is the first game where I ever noticed small details in it. It blew my mind when I realised the webs actually attach to building and thay after you jump off it it will stick behind and hang around where it was attached to
Spider-Man (2002) & Super Mario Sunshine were the two games that I picked for GameCube when my mom bought me one in 5th grade. I LOVE Spider-Man (2002) both because the game is sweet, but also because of the lasting memory. Last of its kind for sure. I played a ton of Spider-Man on Dreamcast prior to that. I'd say the Spider-Man game that I played the most is Spider-Man 2 on PS2. My younger brother and I spent our whole summer vacation playing that game. We did EVERYTHING. As a kid, I was completely blown away by being able to swing through the city. I remember gaming mags / sites at the time were giving it average reviews (7s) and thinking they're so wrong.
I will without a doubt never forget the day my mom got me Spiderman 3 for the PS2. Little did I know when I boot the game up, it looked so different from all the previews I'd seen (Xbox 360/PS3/PC). My jaw was on the ground lol. But I still had fun and while I did play that other version it's something that will always stay burned in my memories forever
I remember playing Spider Man on the PS1, and It was my first introduction to Spider Man and to Stan Lee. I'll always have my fond memories of this game
The 2000 Spider-Man game was also my first foray into Spider-Man and my first “open world” game. I remember this game so fondly and I get chills when I hear the Stan Lee into. And Spider-Man is to this day my favorite super hero. By miles and miles.
Played this demo on PS1 and at 3:34 that building always reminds me of that demo. I found the building on SM2 yesterday when I was thwiping around New York and and immediately smiled and thought back to this opening in the demo. The sounds of that level and everything about that first game is wonderful in so memorable. I have no doubts that insomniac is going to make the wolverine game just as good if not better than Spider-Man. Also if insomniac ever thought about it they can make a really good Hawkeye an Black widow game mixed with stealth as well because Spider-Man stealth sections have the potential to be amazing, pun intended for sure. They're just not flushed out enough.
I remember getting Friend or Foe for the Xbox 360 as part of a Kids WB sweepstakes. It just randomly showed up to my house one day with no warning. I wonder how many they gave out.
Love your videos Matty. We're around the same age and you hit home with a lot of your videos. I enjoy watching them during my grave yard shifts out here in NYC
The Vindication you feel from playing as Venom the first time and seeing that kid with the balloon. Finally got revenge on those kids who kept dropping their balloons
Spider-Man 2 (2023) takes everything we loved about all of these games and put it all into one game. I didn’t think they could top the first, but they did (for me personally).
Shattered Dimensions ❤ that game so much, started playing it again. We’re absolutely RIPE not just for a remaster, but a sequel based on the events of the SpiderVerse comic run. It just makes too much sense, but of course it’ll never happen 😔
Spectacular video Sir! Loved it. Great to see the OG Spider-man from Activision / Neversoft. I played it on PS1 and years later my Brother played it all the time. Oh and I totally agree with the new Peter Parker face in Spidey PS5! Why? So random.
I have a similar attachment to that first Spider-Man game too (I had it on PS1) so this video really hit home. One of the first video games I ever played. Also STUNNED you never played Enter Electro before 😂
Spider-Man and Batman are both my favorite super heroes, and I have played about 95% of these games and let me tell you, the people at Insomniac are GENIUSES. Their games are MASTERPIECES of Spider-Man media ❤️❤️😩
Playing as the villains in Friend or Foe was my absolute favorite thing as a youngin. My mom would always play Spiderman so I could have a blast with all the villains.
What I really loved about Spider-Man the movie the game was that it really felt like a modern take on Spider-Man 1 for the PS1 they took basically all of the elements from that game and just kind of updated them or fine tune them
For real, in Spider-Man 64 (I played on PS1), Carnage and then Monster Ock were terrifying to me as a child lmao. I had to get my dad to finish the Monster Ock chase because I was shitting myself the entire time. Good times lol
Totally disagree on the MJ points in every way, it was definitely forced especially in the 2nd game but. Great video dude. Found a new channel to watch!
Oh man we were in the exact same boat! I love the original Spider-Man on the PS4 but never knew there was a sequel until way later in life! I was astounded that my mom never got it for me considering the amount of time I spent on the original. Perhaps we just never got the money for it
I think this is fair feedback. I actually mention this around Shattered DImensions or Edge Of Time, but we are going to break away from Spidey for a little now that we hit this "magnum opus" point as this video took a ton of time to produce. I still want to do the likes of Friend Or Foe, N64 version, and Enter Electro individually, but that'll likely be for later.
38:04 I have to say this but I'll really stand on SD being the best for me between WoS and EoT. Just had a better story with better cut scenes to me. If WoS wasn't so cheesy it'd be better. SD combat is slept on and honestly felt better than what WoS would sometimes turn into on a run. Plus you had stealth when playing SD which was addictive.
It was crazy when ultimate Spider-Man came out because I had just refreshed myself on reading that comic for the first time and to hear that this game was canonical and had art and writing from the comic was crazy and I wish they would do more of that kind of stuff now. Thankfully, I think the new games seems to build a good enough generic Spider-Man universe kind of what the Arkham games did.
Shattered dimensions was also the first Deadpool in a video game i believe and brought the popularity of the character back after wolverine origins almost killed it, unless it came out before wolverine lol its been a very long time
Shattered Dimensions is such a gem and one of the reasons I still got my Xbox 360. It would be mad to not re-release these classics! I also wouldn't mind having an easy way to play Edge of Time since I skipped it because it seemed inferior.
and yet Arkham borrowed literally EVERYTHING about its combat from Spider-man games. LMFAO Spider-man has been doing that combat style since Spider-man 2 on PS2.
@@lutherheggs451 “literally” everything is not true at all Arkham made free flow feel truly fluid and cinematic to a level never seen before in any superhero game
Ngl I had crazy nostalgia when fighting venom on a sectioned football field in MS2 🔥 that made Me think off the initial fight between venom and Peter in Ultimate Spider-Man for ps2 and young Peter w the whole look from the fit to the middle parted combed style looks exactly like ultimate spiderman Peter Parker. 🔥🔥 I just love that OG masterpiece of a game. And even playing as venom and deleting your enemies are connected between the 2 games
The halfway point of TASM2 doesn't lock you into the menace system, it just lowers it one bar per story checkpoint and you're fully capable of raising it up to full hero status with like a few minutes of doing some side crime. Like yeah it's not a perfect system, but it's not nearly as bad as you made it out to be. Also they greatly improved the open world swinging from TASM1, and TASM2 actually has a functioning PC port that doesn't crash every 30-60 minutes like TASM1 did.
Sad how Beenox had 3 fumbles back to back after the great Shattered Dimensions. I think they're just a CoD suppprt team now, much like Raven and High Moon.
In Spider-Man 2000 that's not the white Spider-Man costume, it's the Spider Armor. And in that game, it functions as armor. The white Spider-Man costume is the Future Foundation costume.
I love your passion! It’s fun to see your path through gaming hardware for the last 20 years. I’ve been predominantly a PlayStation gamer since 1996. Though I did have a 360, and every major Nintendo console as my secondary gaming systems along the way. I may have nostalgia googles on, but I would give Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro another try. It’s perhaps not as landmark as Neversoft’s first game, but it’s an enjoyable second chapter. You may want to set the difficulty down though. Spider-Man 2 is unusually harder that Spider-Man (2000) for some reason. Also, Fun Fact: Enter Electro ends on top of the Twin Towers but the game removes any mention of that because 9/11 happened during the game’s development. But if you pay attention to the level design you can still tell where you’re supposed to be at the game’s climax. You seemed to have only played Spider-Man 3 on PS2 & 360. Did you know New Goblin was playable on the PS3 version of the game? Also, you’re being a little hard on Beenox. The problem was always Activision’s unreasonable development turnaround time for video games. Activision really wanted games that could release every year. Beenox got screwed and then ultimately forced into the Call of Duty churn out machine. But they gave it a hell of a try! Lastly, Marvel didn’t choose to leave Activision for Insomniac. Disney bought Marvel in 2009 and when it came time to re-negotiate Activision’s 15 year deal with Marvel, Disney bullishly said “no” and thought they could handle development of all Marvel titles through Disney Interactive. Over the next few years we got Disney Infinity 1-3. Only after the Toys-To-Life video game bust (and the subsequent closure of Disney Interactive) did Disney finally lament their hubris and start shopping around to other developers for fresh take on Spidey. That’s when Insomniac won their pitch! The rest is history.
My first ever game was Spiderman PS1 and Dragonball GT Final Bout i remember when i found Spiderman 2 enter electro it was amazing still have all three of them and they still work
The neversoft Spiderman game on PC is my favorite of the non-open world games because it had so much heart! And one day I hope we get an open world 2099 game!
For me, enter Electro was my 1st Spiderman game, I enjoyed it so much that when I realised that it was the sequel, I instantly knew I HAD to try and find the 1st game. Ever since then, I have played them all, the good, the bad, and the downright awful. Even with that, I have no doubt that I will continue to play each and every game that continues to be made no matter the quality
As somebody who has always loved Spider-Man ever since the rami movies I have no idea how as a kid I never played shattered dimensions, web of shadows or edge of time. Maybe because not counting web of shadows they were linear and not open world but who the hell knows
I hate to break it to you, Rocksteady saw what Activision was doing with Spider-man and decided that its what they wanted to do. In no universe did any Spider-man game do anything Arkham did, that combat has been there since the Spider-man 2 PS2 game and has just been tweaked ever since. Im sorry but Arkham didn't "originate" anything when it comes to combat.
I too am on the retro spidey game quest. I just beat the tobey Spider-Man 2 game and ultimate Spider-Man. Working my way through all the games until I get a ps5
I really enjoyed shattered dimensions i know i one hundred percent completed it. I enjoyed all the different styles each had. Now if i were to go back and play it today i don't know if i would enjoy it as much but at the time i really liked it.
I hope this studio one day makes a venom game! Everything is already there! That would be absolutely amazing! We had a little taste of what it could be! And venom really deserves a game with the quality of the spider man games.
Spider-Man 64 was my first ever game. My dad surprised me with it one evening when I was 5 years old. Seeing this game again for the first time it years… wow. What good memories

Ngl I had crazy nostalgia when fighting venom on a sectioned football field in MS2 🔥 that made
Me think off the initial fight between venom and Peter in Ultimate Spider-Man for ps2 and young Peter w the whole look from the fit to the middle parted combed style looks exactly like ultimate spiderman Peter Parker.
What a fun video
Sad how Beenox had 3 fumbles back to back after the great Shattered Dimensions. I think they're just a CoD suppprt team now, much like Raven and High Moon.
Friend or Foe was my SHIT growing up. The co-op was fun as hell.
In Spider-Man 2000 that's not the white Spider-Man costume, it's the Spider Armor. And in that game, it functions as armor.
The white Spider-Man costume is the Future Foundation costume.
UA-cam recommended your channel to me, and I really loved it! Found it through the Naruto Ultimate Ninja video. Hugs from Brazil!
Wish they had those older ones on PlayStation 4 and five I remember playing Spider-Man one as a kid for PlayStation one very good game
There was a negative zone spider man suit in the Enter Electro for playstation.
I think it’s because I was too young to think critically at the time, but outside of the story and horrendous good/evil mechanic, I enjoyed TASM 2.
3:10 The game developers broke the immersion with web slinging thin air at this point 😂

And the mom of the year award goes to…
As somebody who has always loved Spider-Man ever since the rami movies I have no idea how as a kid I never played shattered dimensions, web of shadows or edge of time. Maybe because not counting web of shadows they were linear and not open world but who the hell knows
Since Amazing Spider-Man 1, all the Spider-Man games have felt the same. They saw what Arkham did and decided that was what they wanted to do.
That boss in the Amazing Spiderman 1 was a freakin Reaper from Mass Effect!!😂
You gotta rank these games with Spider-Man 2 included. The people demand it
Loved the video! Just fyi carnage was in ultimate spidermn and shattered dimensions as well.
I really enjoyed shattered dimensions i know i one hundred percent completed it. I enjoyed all the different styles each had. Now if i were to go back and play it today i don't know if i would enjoy it as much but at the time i really liked it.
Watching this after beating Spider-Man 2
I would love for a superhero game that’ll allow you to change out of your costume at will. Like Peter have his own game at will.
I hope this studio one day makes a venom game! Everything is already there! That would be absolutely amazing! We had a little taste of what it could be! And venom really deserves a game with the quality of the spider man games.
