I cannot believe you guys declare this the greatest sports film ever….i am taken aback. Americans showing SLAP SHOT this much love….wtf? I was shocked it was even a choice for discussion. Man, this might be my all time favorite episode. Cheers!
I’ve been listening to this podcast for a couple years. I’ve never seen Chris or Sean. They look nothing like what I thought they would. I thought I had them spot on in my head.
And the best needle-drop is clearly "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" by Leo Sayer. They're in the bar and Newman cons the goalie into thinking he can't pickup Francine. Boom, needle drop. Sweeps out a hand and the two of them are dancing in the most 70's scene ever. Maxime Nightingale is also the best and exemplifies exactly why that era of pop music was special. Everyone loved that stuff so you could actually dance to contemporary pop music at the bar and sleep with each-others wives and look really trashy doing it and no one had a problem with it. God, what a time to be an adult. Now it is just freakin' PTA meetings and road rage.
Apparently Brad Sullivan (Mo) was deeply ashamed of his vulgarity in the film. This freakin' guy is talking about "that beautiful snatch" with some of the most joyous line-readings in cinema history and he turns around and complains about the vulgarity! Be proud, it is called acting!
I can't believe you guys didn't bring up that Paul Newman's leather suit was the same suit that SGA wore in the playoffs only missing the shirt and tie.
38:12 Stu Nahan was LA’s Jim Carr. His APEX mountain was his eponymous Spicolli interview in Fast Times AND 1:38 - EVERY musician who was ever in a band has seen Spinal Tap 100’s of times.
I don’t know if you remember the Jim Healey show? He had a clip that he used and he called him silver tips, Stew. He basically said the Houston assholes when he was reading the baseball scores.
How do you do this film and not mention Andrea casually getting 6 feet of air at about 70 miles an hour down a crowded hilly street in a 70’s van. I laugh out loud every time I see it. 😂
So my two fav not TV shows or movies thing in my life have been MST3K and RLM. You guys and gals are about to join that rare air. I see a Rewatchables link come up and I feel compelled to watch it. Intelligent but very funny conversations about movies with little sports references thrown in. That's kind of genius. I presume this was Mr. Simmons brainchild. Bravo Sir.
One of my favorite movies! Once again if you feel like doing Bull Durham you should do it as a live show in Durham. The old DBAP is still there, as is Annie's house, her walking path. Bull Durham had a premier at the Carolina Theater (also still here). And Durham people will come out for anything Bull Durham related.
Great stuff here. One nit to pick. Ned didn't check Nick (the drunk guy on the ice) because he was a goon, he checked him so he DID piss all over himself and told him to get off the ice before he killed himself. It was to help the guy.
Please watch Rudo Y Cursi. Yes it has subtitles but it has everything Bill wants. Also please have Bill watch Andor - it also has 2 of his favorite things - prisons and heists.
The Secret War of Harry Frigg was an NYC TV staple on channels 5 or 9 or 11 in the late 70s/early 80s. I used to watch it every time it came on with my dad. Pretty good, not great, but pretty good.
"Just one Oscar, who gets it?" The freakin' costume designer! You have Paul Newman out there in a full-length dark brown trench-coat with mink trim and a one piece brown leather leisure suit looking like the Waffen SS's pimp, and you are giving it to anyone else? The only reason they didn't win is that everybody dressed that way in the 70's so no one noticed. Your grandma dressed like that. Look at the pictures.
This is a good, fun movie. But they overestimate its importance by magnitudes. Is it even a top 5 sports movie all time? 8? 10? I like this movie a lot, but sheesh.
@RJM1693 sure, but the Rangers still played a pond game, and might of also started the whole, lets have weird venue Hockey games in the NHL, like the Santa Monica NHL game some years back, or the NY game at Mets stadium.
I thought the same thing but Mystery, Alaska bombed pretty hard at the box office and only saw some life on home video after, that's when I saw it and loved it. Don't think it made enough of an impact for Rewatchables to take notice. It definitely had it's roots in Slapshot tho being a comedy with a known dramatic leading actor and they played it pretty straight even with the hilarious Mike Myers cameos.
The man who hosts a movie podcast, has a media company that produces several movie related podcasts and who just launched a UA-cam channel dedicated to movie content called 'Ringer Movies' calling cinephile fans obsessed with 'The Shining' "nut jobs" is an interesting choice to build the brand 😅. Also... the man that has had, what now, 4 episodes on the movie 'Heat' and a 5 hour episode about boogie nights and references '48 hours' every 7 minutes saying that peoples obsession with a movie makes them 'nut jobs' is also... a choice. 🤣
The podcast I listened to for this episode had a BetterHelp ad at the start. They're a really scummy, unethical company. Please don't take their ad money.
I love the rewatchables but they took way too many tangeants in the first 30 minutes of this videos that it's almost unwatchable. Stay on target a little.
I watched this 1977 film before listen to podcast. Hansen bros is funny indeed, there a good jokes, but comon that not the best sport film ever looking with 2024 person eyes. Best sport films have jokes and drama and real sporting events going in films. Slap shots all films only jokes, fights, drinking and no real sport elements in it.Thats like anti sport film. They are winning final game and didnt even score a goal comon :)
These guys are running out of movies. Took me three sittings to get through this movie, so fn' boring... Maybe doing too many of these they're starting to lose perspective... This movie sucks. "It still holds up." Yeah, in movie hell

I had to pause this to watch Slapshot for the first time- Loved it!!!!
I saw this movie in a double feature with animal House. It was at a dollar theater. One of the greatest nights of my life.
Bill, Russillo, and Kyle Brandt doing Youngblood is the hockey pod I want.
Also, thank you for the Shoresy mention. The show is great. Love Letterkenny and Shoresy.

It didn't get brought up but the reason the Hanson's didn't keep acting was because they kept playing pro hockey for another decade plus
Finally!!! Thank you for doing this classic 👍
The dubbed version in French is an absolute gem as it was done in Quebec. Denis Lemieux dubbed himself!!
Need a "The Sting" rewatchables next.
Newman said after this movie that he couldn't stop swearing. I believe something along the line of "pass me the fucking salt" to his young child.
@@THEKILLERWHALE Crazy! Knowing that, the Academy needs to re-award the 1978 Best Supporting Actor statue. Obi-Wan losing to Mo feels exactly right.

In Canada it is the best sports movie of all time. In Quebec it is legend.
CR's Wayne Jenkins bit just slays me. I'm laughing as hard as Sean and Bill.

Great shout out to Shoresy, CR. Shoresy is brilliant.
Call your parents.
Shoresy is unbelievable...
@@thebrockman12 settle down 🤣
Easily a top three movie for me, any genre. Paul of course was awesome and former hockey player Michael Ontkean as Ned great also.
How do you do this film and not mention Andrea casually getting 6 feet of air at about 70 miles an hour down a crowded hilly street in a 70’s van. I laugh out loud every time I see it. 😂
Maybe 2. Rocky 1. I get why Bill has to talk about language not aging well, but it makes it more realistic, and locker room talk exists today.
Yesssss!!!! I bought a Chiefs jersey at the HHOF and it's still one of my favourite jerseys

They won a bunch of games on the road before the first home game with the Hansons that’s why it was sold out for their first game
A classic if there ever was one, and the most coverage The Ringer has given hockey this playoffs. (Stick taps to Katie Baker)
Lisa Bonet was revelatory. When are you guys doing Angel Heart? Im thinkin Bill, C.R., Van Lathan, and Mallory Rubin.
