Mispronouncing gesture was part of the joke.
ua-cam.com/video/9XoUDK-aK9Y/v-deo.html
I love Kitty Flanagan doing standup talking about how this one guy says “gesture” wrong also
Like Norman Gunston saying fillums instead of films.
Fairdinkim!
@@rossbrumby1957my father says “fillums” 😂. It’s so bizarre. We all scream over the top of each other “it’s fiLLLLLLLMMMMs!!!”. He also can’t pronounce “Prado” (his car), and he refers to anyone in administrative positions as “seckatariy”. His old business partner had lots of plastic surgery, mostly facelifts, he’d call them “head jobs” (without trying to be funny… he thought that’s what they’re called!) “God she looks terrible… she’s had far too many head jobs” 😂😂
@@rossbrumby1957in Ireland that's how it's pronounced by most people.
All spoken without a script, no idiot cards. All in his head.
Plus no foul language.
Can't have everything
thank you, I never use a script for my reactions! jk. yes that's quite impressive especially in front of a large foreign audience, personally I'd poop my pants
@@ryanreaction
Oh God, Ryan!!! 🤣🤣🤣
@@ryanreaction 🤣we Aussies use the term shitme pants Ryan 🤣👍
Or trashing other people by name!
Hogan even greeted the Queen wearing footy socks, work shorts and a checkered shirt with the sleeves cut off
Of course true Aussie Class.
Hoges is as funny as they come. A lot of his content from The Paul Hogan Show would be a bit risqué for today’s princesses, but that man is FUNNY!
Very Aussie humour from a very Aussie guy. Even though I have seen this speech quite a number of times I still laugh. It is very Aussie style humour but that was what the Americans saw in Hoges and what we Aussies love.
@simbob26 I agree and that's why shows ain't as good or funny anymore because of whinging sooks 👍😀 it's un Australian 🤣
I still laugh at his show, despite the outrage from the PC brigade about the way women are depicted, having missed the point completely.
@@carolthorson7854 Never did like the show. Maybe what you said is why, but this speech is classic. I'm gonna go find it and watch it a few times. Completely taking the piss out of it.
Paul is a genuine Aussie
And not a single swear word or insult. Paul Hogan a genuinely funny guy andca great bloke
He didn’t win an Oscar but he did win a Golden Globe.
Ive only ever heard one person pronounce the word "gesture" with a hard 'g' and you just heard that one person too!!😂
You should watch Kitty Flanagan’s stand up bit on her reaction to a guy who used a “soft” g.
For anyone wondering.....Hogan was nominated for writing Crocodile Dundee, he lost to Woody Allen for Hannah and Her Sisters.
It's funny when it's brought up in the Very excellent Mr Dundee. 😂😂
I remember and it was so wrong!!!
From a rigger on Sydney harbour bridge to Hollywood stardom and he remained a true blue Aussie ? ( well almost)
No teleprompter he was a one of a kind
It was teleprompter: he pronounced the word "gesture" as it is written instead of how it should be (and is, even in Oz) "jest-ure" or "jest-uh," take your pick.
@@meeeka It was part of the joke, listen to what he says prior to him pronouncing the word gesture in the incorrect way.
Paul is a fantastic, clever comedian and a true blue Aussie 😂
The audience gets it Ryan. The 80’s was a COOL era
Love this, he has a good poke at Hollywood nonsense, but in a light hearted way, didn't swear, wasn't vulgar and didn't insult anyone. Funny and clever.😊✌❤
This is "Hoges" at his comedic best. No script. Just pure genius wit. The Aussie sense of humour can be VERY DRY. It takes Yanks a while to 'get it'...
We could almost say: "That's not a 'speech'. THIS IS A SPEECH!!!" 🤣🤣
BTW, I love the 1980s 'Miami Vice' pastel colours... 😁
M 🦘🏏😎
Mate, Paul Hogan is an Australian icon. Bloody legend, true blue Aussie
Hoges was a painter on the Sydney Harbor Bridge before he became a comedy legend.
Harbour bridge.
Explains why he was so calm filming the scene with the "jumper"
Before that he was a lifeguard at Granville Swimming Pool working for Parramatta Council
@@Sydneysider1310
SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE
@@c8Lorraine1 of course, but it was the American spelling of harbour I was correcting.
Definitely watch the Paul Hogan Show. A natural talent!
I grew up in the 70's watching his TV show, a lot of it went over my head but I was still wetting myself laughing. Legend.
You should react to political satirists Clarke and Dawe, a lot of their stuff is very Australia specific but there's one called "The Use of the English Language in Australia" that you'll get a laugh out of.
Hahaha. 🤣. Yep he’s a Fkn legend. You should watch one of the old Paul Hogan Shows from back in the 70’s/80’s I think it was on. His mate Strop and Delvene Delaney were also in it.
Don't forget Sgt Donger 💪🏼 😂
They may be demonetised 😬
Strop was the business brain behind the whole kit & kaboodle. Also the business brain behind World Series Cricket, working for Kerry Packer to get it all up & running.
Packer was loyal to his team. Hoges and his team never left ch9. Players like Ian Chappel, Tony Greig, Bill Lawry, even Richie Benaud, they were promised jobs for life, and the promise was kept.
OMG, Leo Wanker, priceless!
Better still, watch the original movie, Crocodile Dundee.
Him as a drunk in the Paul hogan show was pretty funny.😂
The PAL dog food skit with the two dogs still cracks me up to this day, too good for you mongrels brought tears of laughter .
Talking to you from the future Ryan , it's Friday already mate😆😆😆😆😆😆😆🇭🇲🙂😎
Ryan you are a legend, Australia loves you ..never stop your videos us Aussies love them❤❤❤❤
Our Aussie treasure, as funny as & as original as you will ever find in comedy, no cue cards just pure off the cuff brilliance, he is old now but will forever be "MIck Dundee"
Paul Hogan (Hoges as we call him here in Australia) is such an Aussie icon. He’s a very funny man who started out as a painter painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You need to check out his tv show called The Paul Hogan Show.
Another funny Oscars or golden globes speech was from another Aussie actor her name's Rebel Wilson. It would make another great reaction video Ryan 👍
We need a UA-cam Oscars and see Ryan do a speech like Hoges 😂
Paul Hogan always makes me think of my late grandfather, how I wish I could go back and be with him
Paul Hogan had a Benny Hill-style TV show in the 70s
And if you've never seen Benny Hill, he's very un-PC. But in the same vein but maybe slightly later, a very gay Kenny Everett had a show of the same recognisable genre.....
If only the current crop would remember the three Gs.
Happy Arvo Ryan! 🤗👍 Hoges used to say, 'gooday viewers', just a former painter but real, honest comedy! 😁 Second envelope waiting! Show some real emotions folks, the world is watching, and Australians! 😂
Saw some ‘cool actors ‘ in the audience that have played amazing roles, but didn’t quite get it. Or just snobs.
He killed this. Was the humour above their heads? Or the boys club?
Dustin Hoffman- no sense of humour. But in fairness I think most of them couldn't understand his accent😅
His humour isn’t obvious enough for many Americans.
"Guessed ya" was definitely a self-deprecation joke.
He was saying " gesture"
@@maryl8753 Yeah, I know. I typed it phonetically.
An Australian comedian so good he had his own TV show in the UK.
So did "Dame Edna"....?
@@kathydurow6814 Did Dame Edna (Barry Humphries) ever have his own show on the UK?
There were species and talk shows, but his own show?
@daveofyorkshire301 There was the Dame Edna Experience in the UK (1987-89) and The Dame Edna Treatment (2007). There was also Dame Edna's Hollywood in 1991-93 which was US based & might have been more a series of special, I'm not sure. I think it was one of these that had Robin Williams guesting as a pizza delivery person. Quite interesting to see how their two styles interacted.
@@kathydurow6814 That all passed me by, I remember the talk shows and the odd special, but I had no idea there was a regular show.
Lighten up ye’all. Aussie humor at its best. Looove it Paul H. Grew up watching you on tv every night.
I loved watching the Paul Hogan Show when I was a kid. My Mum hated it so I had to sneak over to a friend’s place to watch.
Hadn’t seen this before, fantastic. 🇦🇺
Hoges, Aussie legend, should watch old "the paul hogan show" episodes, awesome :):):)
I think the hard 'g' on gesture was a gag (because he's talking about the slightest mistake being highlighted) - but the audience seemed to miss the joke and assume it was just accent....
5:05 "You're here to sweat. This program is live. There's about one thousand million people watching you. So, you remember - one wrong word, one foolish gesture and your whole career could go down in flames. Hold that thought and have a nice night, you hear❗️'
Will Smith should've taken Paul Hogan's advice, before acting like an absolute Hockey 🏒 PUCK at The Oscars.
Where is Will Smith now ❔️
In hiding 🤔❔️
His name will never be in another envelope.
Not the 1st one, not the 2nd one
Another fact about Paul Hogan.
Paul Hogan asked John Cornell (his manager who also played Strop in "The Paul Hogan Show"), while they were watching the cricket, why cricketers don't get paid more, despite being well kn wn.
It prompted Cornell to approach Kerry Packer with the idea of World Series Cricket, which ultimately led the megabucks cricketers are paid today.
Have you watched Norman Gunston's interviews of celebrities in Australia back in the 70's/80's? He's another true blue Aussie comic legend.
Gidda from Adelaide, South Australia 🇦🇺
Should watch some of the Paul Hogan show. It's funny as....especially Leo Wanker, Strop, Perce the wino and other Paul Hogan characters.
And don't forget Devine Delaney she was hot.
@@systemsrenegade9888 She still is for an old bird, she was one of my first TV crushes...Strop was a lucky bastard!
@@kevkoala he sure was and she went with Malcolm Douglas on one of his trips around Australia .
@@systemsrenegade9888that is Delvene Delaney.
Hoges is King of Oz.
Bro you're awesome really cheered me up with your Aussie reaction vids.
No bad for someone who started out as a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Good on you, Mick Dundee.
I'm Australian & Paul definitely mispronounced gesture 😂🇦🇺🦘💖
Yes, he did! Lol
Yeah, it wasn't one of his better jokes.
Following "One wrong word", it was most definitely intentional.
@@crayzeape2230 I know it was a joke. Ryan didn't get that at first. I was replying to what he said, not what Paul said 😂
I’ve pronounced gesture with a hard G (like Hoges), all my life. It’s how we were taught by family AND school here in Qld Australia. DEFINATELY not only one way of pronouncing the word. Hoges & Aussie - brilliant.
"not going to be pretty" is not a threat. He just means he might not take it well
"Happy arvo" ? Happy, fken, arvo? Thought you were an Aussie, mate? 😂😂😂
Love ya work, mate. ❤
Need to watch "Crocodile Dundee" starring Paul Hogan. As Aussie AS
Hey mate this is Australian way good sense of humour 👍 👏 👌 Hodge's so much fun to listen to his speech ❤❤❤Australia God bless all
Good fun. That is Hoges, he talks to you like it is one on one and not one to many.
The Paul Hogan shows from the mid 1970's were hilarious Sargent Donger Leo Wanker Luigi The Unbelievable , and the Winfield commercial with the line Let It Rip Boris and still only 40 cents a packet
Well I don't say Guessture but I do hear it occasionally. I've no idea what the Guessture vs Jesture statistics are but I nominate 'jesture'. Never knew anything else :)
if you haven't heard how Paul got into comedy, I recommend it, quite an interesting story, he's talked about it on lots of shows, so I'm sure you would be able to find it
Lol it was me
Good one! 😁😁
Nice one Sue
Paul Hogan is sure an Aussie Legend you should try to see his videos of his comedy show fantastic 👍🏻🤩
You want to see him meeting the Queen
Oh and yes us Aussie’s (Ozzie’s) can also pull the piss(joke about) out of ourselves
Paul didn't 'Threaten' if his name wasn't called - its called a 'JOKE'!!! Paul Hogan was the 'Ricky Gervais' of his day. He didn't give a toss if he offended someone - no-one got offended by Paul's sense of humor as it was done without malice. In a time when taking the mickey out of someone was a good laugh.
we Aussies dont beat around the bush.... love it or hate it, we tells it as it is, plain and simple....
Paul has really only played himself he started out working the the Sydney harbour Bridge as a rigger he then was discovered on a talent show then he was on a current affairs programme before getting his own show called the Paul Hogan Show which Paul & his working partner John Cornell wrote nearly every episode for over 12 seasons then he & John wrote original Crocodile Dundee which John also directed
We were so proud of Paul for this, well, I should speak for myself. So funny, but looking at some of the people in the audience, all that went over their heads, and probably thinking who the hell is this joker, 😅😅😅
This was classic so true even then
Off the boil means it goes cold, as in no longer as much fun.
2nd envelope = we can pick another winner.
At the time that Hoges referred to, the Oscars used to be fully televised, starting with the technical awards, and building up to the top five: Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture, several hours later. Everyone was either drunk or yawning by that time.
All the earlier minor award winners gave long involved thank you speeches. So by the middle, music cues would start halfway through a brief speech. The final five winners had only a few seconds to say thanks before the ‘get off the stage’ music started.
It's just that super-steady, easy-rolling Aussie attitude. Like the very unflappable and endlessly popular Jack Young, the first man to win consecutive world speedway championships. He was given a huge championship cup for the first win, so what did this keen fisherman from Adelaide use it for? Well, he kept his fishing sinkers in it, of course! 🤣
Remember when flying from Australia to the USA you cross the International Date line so you gain a day, coming back to Aus you lose a day. You are not flying for over 24hrs.
When I fly to USA the first leg is about 13-14hrs and then another one or two flights depending on where I am going, so it can be around 24 hours til I get to my destination
I've never heard gesture pronounced like that either. Born & bred Aussie here! Definitely a j sound
He said it wrong deliberately that was the joke 😂one wrong word
Ryan: the 'second envelope' is kinda like a running gag ... if you say you don't deserve it (being "too humble"), it can be given to one of the runner-up's. 😅
Lmao 🤣, nah mate no threat just a warning 🤣🤣🤣
You really must take a look at the movie he was nominated for writing screenplay . He also starred in Crocodile Dundee. It’s said he worked a joke ,either verbal of visual , into the script every 90secs. I did use a stopwatch and yeah, it worked
U should check out Australia's island state tasmania! Would love to see it
Wasn’t Hoges co-host of the Oscars?
The Paul Hogan Show was damn fine, back in the day xxx Loved Strop
Most of us pronounce gesture correctly....
Did not get the joke I see
We say gesture 😂 same as you
He'd be the only person on the planet to pronounce gesture as guessture .
We pronounce gesture the same way you do. Paul did it his way.
5:38 "gesture" pronounced wrong, that was the pun.. that was a foolish "gesture".. Some people NEVER catch/get that joke.. possibly the best one of the whole skit.
Some of the best live/skit TV in Oz history was "The Paul Hogan Show"..
Check out some of hogan’s other comedy he even had his own comedy show called The Paul Hogan Show
Gotta check 'Nastalgia Sandwich' I think it was a paul hogan show skit
Yep go back and look at the Paul Hogan show with Strop. Classic 70s comedy
Fyi the hard "g" in "gesture" isn't an Aussie thing, it was a joke following the phrase "one wrong word"
You should check out the best Aussie speech ever, PM Julia Gillard mysoginy speech, it's awesome. Watch opposition leader Tony abbot's expression change from smirking to serious realisation that he's a mysoginist
It's all about perspective.
He is up.there wirh Ricky
Mate listen to Goondiwindi pork by John Williamson and tubbo station and the wobbly boot hotel there great songs my favourite there all Australian.
Let the speech run , then comment . Don't interrupt.
I’ve never heard any Australian, of whom I am one, ever say G-esture. Everyone says J-esture. He may have been speaking ironically.
He was taking the p-zz🤨🙄
Before Crocodile Dundee Paul Hogan used to have his own tv show which was so funny . What you see in this speech is what he was like on his tv show . It always seemed like he was just making it up as he went along . I haven’t seen any of the episodes since so it’s probably dated really badly and it certainly was never political correct anyway . That’s probably why they haven’t repeated it . I haven’t looked on UA-cam to see if any eps are available because I don’t won’t to spoil the memories of how much we all loved the show at the time here in Australia.
To be honest, this is the first time I've heard "gestya" instead of gesture. Either Paul Hogan pronounces it wrong or he made a mistake because he was stressed and under presure to deliver the lines without stuffing up, which he nearly did a couple of times. But overall, it was a good speech.
oceanean realnesss
Old hoags what a legend
Ryan you need to watch some episodes/ clips of his TV show of the late 70s early 80s. Bit like an Aussie version of Benny Hill
He won the Oscar with Crocodile Dundee.
Paul don't rehast it off the top of his head
seeing as Paul is a comedian of course he is funny
Please, do react to Crocodile Dundee for us! 🙏✌🏼
