He said shrimp because it was aimed at the USA audience😂
Correct! The "shrimp" thing isn't aimed at ourselves.
Plus shrimp are small and he's holding up a king prawn. Would have been funnier if he said shrimp and held up a jumbo-sizdd banana prawn 😅
Yeah, I saw the “shrimp” & cackled with lol.
Yes, that's what I heard too.
Fuckin oath you are correct good sir!
The first ad was made for the American market and was not shown here. The second was made for the local market and was aimed at getting Aussies to not go overseas, but holiday in Australia instead. The third and fourth were made for the entire overseas market.
4:20 Ryan just didn’t get the joke did he? Surely you don’t have to be an Ozzie to get the joke? “Thanks Trevor”. lol 😂😂😂😂 how could you not laugh ?!?! That went straight over Ryan’s head 😂😂
The US advertising agency told them to say shrimp instead of prawns as Americans would not understand what a prawn is
Same as a capsicum they don't know what we talking about because they call them bell peppers 😀👍
Can't wait to see you here Ryan, you and your family... your videos here would be epic! So where the bloody hell are ya?!
"You guys are responsible for it!"
We're responsible for Fosters, too, but we don't drink the stuff! XD
No, not exactly: Foster's was founded in 1888 in Melbourne, Victoria by two American brothers. The company was renamed prior to sale to British-South African multinational SABMiller in 2011.
@@petemedium2185 Okay, but we still made that shit initially and thus, we are responsible for its existence. Without having been made here it wouldn't exist (and the world may be a better place without it, let's be honest).
Alas, we ARE responsible. Nor do we drink it. If you're going to "Um, actually..." someone, please make sure it's actually correcting a mistake... which this was not. Thanks.
@@7thlittleleopard7 "We?" Whose 'we"? Based on that we are to blame for Maccas (Aussie made McDonalds). Hungry Jacks (Aussie made Burger King). Why should we take the blame for the rubbish these super corporations own and impose on us?
😂
No marketing team involved in this. Paul Hogan and his manager John Cornell came up with the concept of selling Australia as a friendly place, and made the ad. Hogan gave his services for free.
Lovely to see Delvene.
Our best unofficial tourist campaign is from the Northern Territory.
CU in the NT.
Most Aussie movement ever 😅
The Barossa Valley is a world class wine region in South Australia. Settled by German immigrants in the 19th century.
Pronounced Ba-Ross-a
Or B,rossa
I came to the US in May 1986, I was 20. It was a lonely time. No one could understand a word, no one said hello on the street, virtually no one knew anything about Australia or where it was. Newspapers from Oz were a week old. Phone calls cost a bundle (through two operators). Profoundly isolated is how I felt.
Then “Crocodile Dundee” opened in the U.S. later that year. All of a sudden, Australia existed to the U.S. for the first time, it seemed. These ads came later, when Hoges had gained some recognition.
It wasn’t until the Internet that any news was more readily available, outside of occasional stories about bushfires and elections.
The adds where good now watch crocodile Dundee and if you like we will watch it with you
I spent most of 1983 in New York, staying with the family of my boyfriend (later, husband) whom I'd met while travelling in the Middle East. I couldn't believe the level of ignorance about Australia. I was treated like some very exotic creature, it was hilarious. And yes I was complimented on my ability to speak English.
Yeah, yanks used to think we spoke German. (No, mate, not Austria!)
historically and empirically, muricans have been and are insular.
that's remarkable
The second ad you looked at was aimed at domestic tourism within Australia. Trying to encourage Australians to see Australia instead of going overseas.
Paul Hogan hosting the Oscars is an absolute 💯 classic, it's hilarious
I will check that out!
He didn’t hosted it he open it that’s all..
Bloody hilarious! Took the p*ss out of both Aussies and Oscar crowds
Our previous Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, was involved in the "Where the bloody hell are ya" advertisement and was supposedly sacked from Tourism Australia for some dodgy deals associated with the campaign.
Really
Yep. Was made PM by his extremist conservatives and went to Hawaii as Aussie had the worst bush fire in ages. Yep, the conservative Coalition can sure pick em.
@@Redwarfa Not surprising. He was no loss to our government. Just ask the fieries.
@@JB-zs1oq fieries?
@@Redwarfa firemen - the ones battling our worst ever bushfires while he and his family sneaked out of the country for a holiday in Hawaii. Idiot didn’t think there would be any other Australians there to take his photo and prove what a lazy, duplicitous individual he was.
You absolutely, totally, inescapably have to watch Crocodile Dundee on here for us. Then we can talk about Australia’s own myth making and pride in an Outback that only a few of us comparatively speaking live in.
It’s even better after you’ve been here!
Paul Hogan was an absolute legend. You should watch his movie documentary, it’s really humorous and informative.
He still is mate.. Legends stay around a bit longer in Australia. 😊
We do cook prawns on the barbie, sometimes they are green (raw) prawns, and sometimes they have been already cooked (boiled) and are just heated through and maybe charred a little. Delicious!
Shrimp was used to satisfy the target market. US language was used on purpose. This was explained when the ad was first released and people in Australia objected to the use of the word. The 1 800 number is an Australian number you wouldn't be able to call it from the US without adding the Australian international code 61 first.
Very good point
I think it’s a yank number. Too many digits for Oz, 11 not 10.
And we may have still been using 008 numbers then.
It’s probably jus been disconnected: it’s been almost 40 years.
@@judithstrachan9399ah good point. Didn't see that. I'll shut up 😂
@@judithstrachan9399 Anything to do with SchMo would HAVE to be disconnected. He certainly was.
These ads really worked and made Oz the number one destination for Americans after these aired.....in the US(hence the "shrimp bit)!
As an Australian who actually worked on Prawn trawlers I'm less triggered by "throw another shrimp on the Barbie" mainly because we used to export them and they fully went into boxes saying "fresh shrimp product of Australia" we also graded them to the pound
I've always thought it was 'Throw an extra shrimp on the barbie' but in the add here, he actually says 'slip another shrimp on the barbie'. Have I been delusional for the last 40 years or was there another add where he said 'throw' not 'slip'. weird.....
His most iconic words "thats not a knife, this is a knife" in Crocodile Dundee.
Brilliant, Australia really made great ads for tv and cinema's in those days! 😃 It's a shame honest comedy is no longer acceptable! 😏
You’re ability to shoe horn a nonsense comment on your imaginary consequences of the culture wars that you love so much into every reaction video is quite remarkable
Hoges had curried PRAWNS in the second ad.
Yeah, I noticed that, too.
I have always called the little prawns shrimp, The ones that came in prawn cocktails. It makes sence they are tiny.😂
In England I remember people called the smaller prawns 'shrimp'. I found out later that prawns and shrimp are different seafood.
It was originally done saying prawns, but Americans suggested changing it to shrimp, so they didn't have work out what a prawn was, even though you see him holding it, putting on BBQ lol
It was a two factor saying. Shrimp was directed at USA and barbie was directed at Australia. And yes we do put prawns ( shrimp) on the barbie they are delicious
We'll say 'g'day' when you arrive and some of us may say 'hooroo' when you go home.
Mainly in Qld, I think.
@@judithstrachan9399 Ahhh... no.. it was country just about everywhere once.
Thanks.
I heard it a lot in my Qld family, growing up. Not for ages, I thought it was cos I moved around a lot. Probably just getting a bit less common.
Yep, Paul Hogan said “shrimp” so Americans would understand it, because the ad was targeting the US. In Australian waters, we have a slightly different crustacean called prawns, which we most definitely put on the barbecue in the form of King Prawns! Also, when you say it, you use a weird accent: barbayyy. It’s just barbie. 😂🇦🇺 Prawns have a shell that flows from head to tail, shrimp have a shell that changes direction with a central scale that sits on top in both directions. Both animals have 10 legs, but prawns have pincers on three pairs of legs, while shrimp just have one clawed duo.
Paul’s’ most famous line was: That’s not a knife, This is a Knife… it’s from his movie Crocodile Dundee 2.
Nope, from the original.
Although it may well have been in both.
It's from the first movie doofus 😂
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 hey there, Yes,I realised that after I posted it…its a long time since I watched either movie.I’m a Doofus, you got it right.
@@johnlaine2654 Sheesh. How do you get that wrong???
There were several other Paul Hogan ads that the Carlton United Brewery had until they went missing. I was lucky enough to go to a beer launch and they ran all these Paul Hogan ads. The one that sticks out was Paul Hogan walking along the rocks off the coast in Britain with his fishing rod over his shoulder, close by other fishermen when all of a sudden one catches a baby shark and a crowd of people rush in to see this guy fighting to bring this shark up onto the rocks. As he lands the shark on the rocks, the crowd applauds the Fisherman's efforts, Then all of a sudden Paul Hogan leans in, grabs the shark by the gills and I quote "Excuse me mate, do you mind if I borrow some bait". and walks off and throws it on his giant hook. Typical Paul Hogan humour.
I love the second ad, always have; esp him visiting auntie, but she's in Perth.
Bar Bay??? A shrimp on a bar bay??? If you can't get that part right, then it's obvious you'd have trouble knowing what a prawn is.
First time I've seen some of these ads and I live in Australia lol. I wasn't even born yet when a lot of these ads came out.
Hi Ryan🎶
I really enjoy watching your delightful face and expressions of appreciation…. A really feel-good addition to my day!
Hope you have escaped unscathed from tornadoes… I always check the weather for Evansville.
Stay safe and keep you and your family happy!
Greetings from Healesville Australia.
(Google earth is a great way to explore the world!)
I had an Aunty Doreen who lived in Dimboola (small central Vic country town) who I used to drop in on when driving to Adelaide from Melbourne.
Well that was a loveky trip down nostalgia lane. Thanks Ryan! Your thongs have been serving me well by the way 😊
Would love to see you react to clips of Eric Bana playing his classic TV character “Poida” (Peter).
Theres a bunch of clips on UA-cam of Poida skits, just click any, they’re all good.
I always thought she said " Where the bloody hell are YA"
That was Lara Bingle?
she did..
& it was.
Oh! The controversy. 🤦♂
That was a much later ad.
Actually, we do put them on the barbie. All sorts of things are good on the barbie.
Yeah, I once had Barbie on the backyard barbie... 😉😂😂
@@wilsonperez2668 Ended up with a sooty butt, I guess.
He had to call it a shrimp ‘cos you wouldn’t know what he was talking about if he said prawn.
Look at the size of that prawn! That’s a king, for sure.
Barrossa Valley is in South Australia. The best state 😂
That’s where I’m from 👍
No, not anymore it’s not - only joking lol. I’m only anti SA as my son has moved there permanently from Vic. He’s my buddy. Going to miss him terribly
@@bernadettelanders7306 feel ya, my son moved 2 suburbs away, got married and had babies. miss the bugger :)
Only have to agree because my family started out there but got sensible and moved to Vic (the other best state) :)
@@lozinozz7567
2 suburbs away? Hope u get to see them all.
Loved watching them after so many years.
We def put prawns on the BBQ growing up, its a thing that for sure does happen here. We eat them all different ways. In my family on the BBQ was a big thing. Aussie here. :)
He did these ads for free. They worked a treat. The minute Hoges made a few bob overseas, Australia decided to tax him to buggery.
Politicians are all arseholes.
They didn’t 'decide' to tax him, and politicians had nothing to do with it, unless you believe they should give tax cuts to high income earners. He moved into the next tax bracket, which had been in place for decades, and was automatically taxed - the same as we would be if we made that sort of money. And many, if not most countries tax their citizens for what they earn overseas.
Ryan, you need to bite the bullet and get down here for a holiday. You'll have a blast
Gidda & Regards from Adelaide, South Australia 🇦🇺
in one of those Paul Hogan ads, a beautiful woman in a bikini walks past him and says g'day, and he says to the camera "and she's one of the average ones."
The thing that’s amazing is Australia hasn’t really changed much from Paul Hogan’s add from years ago. Only thing I should mention is it’s very costly down here. You might not have to tip but the prices are ridiculous.
The Shrimp was a suggestion the the American consultants. We all hated it from the word go.
The 2nd one was targeted internally to get Australians to holiday within Australia.
These ads put Australia on the map, literally back then!
Love all of your videos. I was wondering when your fascination with our Australia began? Not sure if you have done a video on this but it would be interesting to hear why you do all of this and what it is and when in your own life did this fascination begin?
If you take the lakes out of the equation, the actual land content of Australia is SLIGHTLY more than the USA.
You should also check out Paul’s later Australia ads from 2018:

Paul Hogan has talked in recent years about the shrimp thing. He said yes, he understands Aussies don't like it being called a shrimp, but the ad wasn't aimed at them, it was aimed at Americans, so it would have been silly to call it a prawn to millions of Americans.
I would love to see you do a movie reaction of Crocodile Dundee (1986)! 💝👌🏼🤞🏻✌🏼
😂😂 We were like "why the heck is he calling a prawn, a shrimp!"😂😂 I guess its similar to calling a crayfish a lobster 😂😂
Not one before that he was doing cigarette adverts..
The slogan they gave him was, "Anyhow, have a Winfield!"😂
If Hoges said put a Prawn on the Barbie you Americans wouldn't have known what the hell he was talking about. But how I wish he never said it, does my head in when Americans say it 🫤
True shrimp is not commonly found in Australia, it's much more common to encounter their cousins: prawns, and we certainly don't put them on the barbecue.
I saw an interview with a 21 year old woman at a college, When asked if you were in the UK could you speak their language she said no they speak European.
I'm also sad to say I remember those ads, getting so old 😭
I mean you can do all those things in USA as well, you have snow, water canyons everything else.
You and your family must visit Australia, spend some time hearing different versions of Aussie accents, learning Aussie slang (and Aussie swear words - we are quite adept) and seeing us just being Aussie.
I remember the ad, HOWEVER I only just saw that the bloody prawn is already cooked before he puts it on the bbq
Barossa Valley is a wine growing area in South Australia, just north of Adelaide. Say out loud: toss, Ross, Rossi, rossa, bahrossa, Barossa.
While much smaller and less publicised, there are some very good wines from the NSW southern highlands. Always good for a tasting and often results in some careful purchases.
@@JB-zs1oq I like many Australian wines, but I’ve had a couple of special experiences at Hardy’s in the 80’s. Very memorable!
Yeah Ryan Paul Hogan is a real character See if you can check him out in his FORMAL ATTIRE when he met the late QUEEN EIIZABETH ll.He went out of his way to impress her TRUE AUSSIE HUMOUR.😅😅😅 👍.
The pub reminded me of the new bar opening in Melbourne. Called ( moondog wild west brewery bar ) in footscray opening tomorrow ...American themed.like the wild west
There's another one that most of us thought it was going to be another crocodile Dundee movie but ended up being a tourism ad and its got Chris Hemsworth in it and it's s pretty funny you would like that one Ryan 👍
Shrimps are very small, about an inch or so. Prawns are MUCH bigger and yes, we DO put prawns on the barbie.
It's not "barbay", its "barbie (as in barbee - short for barbecue). Eh mate?
Hey Ryan, we definitely put prawns (shrimp) on the BBQ here…
G’day Ryan, hope your enjoying your day ❤❤❤
It was to appeal to the USA tourist market that's why he says shrimp as you lot call it shrimp
Maybe next ad should be "where the bloody hell are ya?"
SA stands for South Australia - so the Barossa Valley is in Australia! 🇦🇺
So when are you visiting Ryan, let me know, so I can cook you an amazing feed xx
Not even 5 minutes in and Ryan is ready for a fair dinkum holiday!
The Paul Hogan ad is where the phrase was first, and only time, used, and made up for the overseas market.
The second advert was made for the Australian domestic traveler within Aus.
Hello Ryan, when are you and your family coming down under for a shrimp on the barbie, or to say G'day, come on where the bloody hell are you? Lol.
That second commercial got banned in a lot of countries
First ad was to wake up yanks, second ad was to show there's more to Australia than gold coast QLD or Sydney NSW, the third one was done about twenty years later than the first one.
Hope you are making truck-loads of money from your u-tubes🐸🤓🦋
They’re great fun 👍
Australian tourism has actually dipped annualy from 12 million to 8 million.
We do barbecue prawns. They’re delicious.
Hi Ryan. I bought 2 of your tees. (Only meant to order 1). They are very hot and can only be worn in Winter. Go full cotton for Aussie wear.
Shrimp ????? That was the small kid at school. :)
ha. true Stuart.
The Ad was for American Tourist Market so the 'Shrimp' reference was delibert. Even Paul later admitted it was correct for that purpose. 🇦🇺
Barossa Pronounced Ba-ross-a :) Love your vids.
Hey you know it looked to me like he was saying he'd put a shrimp on the barbie, because it's something Americans like to do, and if they came to visit, he'd do that for them, to make them feel welcome. Seriously, I never remember anyone saying that, besides Hoges.
Try ringing the number with +61 at the start. 😊
Paul did these ads for free. Crocodile Dundee had just become a surprise hit in both Oz and USA
Just a fact on Paul Hogan,,,,
32-year-old Paul Hogan began working as a rigger on the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1970 - over 15 years before his 'Crocodile Dundee' fame.
Prawns and we do put them on the bbq
As an Australian, I have to say that I really love this Australian tourism ad. This one's the longer version. lol. ua-cam.com/video/WP-39Qq4OQc/v-deo.htmlsi=zbIA7dFj8DWzLEvQ (P.S Right click and open new tab so you don't leave this channel.) 😘❤xo

We call them.prawns and we don't BBQ them.eithet we boil them.and we have different species of prawns

The guy in the restaurant that says Gday Paul seems familiar. Is he a cricketer ?
7:20... Lara Bingle and the ad writers got heaps of flak for using the word bloody on TV at the time.
Ba-Ross-a mate… do it .. just move here lol
In the second ad, the place in South Australia is pronounced Ba Ross A Valley. I live a couple of hours drive from there. It’s beautiful. The 3rd ad was banned in England due to the woman saying the word Bloody. Lol
