The first ad was made for the American market and was not shown here. The second was made for the local market and was aimed at getting Aussies to not go overseas, but holiday in Australia instead. The third and fourth were made for the entire overseas market.

No, not exactly: Foster's was founded in 1888 in Melbourne, Victoria by two American brothers. The company was renamed prior to sale to British-South African multinational SABMiller in 2011.

No marketing team involved in this. Paul Hogan and his manager John Cornell came up with the concept of selling Australia as a friendly place, and made the ad. Hogan gave his services for free.

I came to the US in May 1986, I was 20. It was a lonely time. No one could understand a word, no one said hello on the street, virtually no one knew anything about Australia or where it was. Newspapers from Oz were a week old. Phone calls cost a bundle (through two operators). Profoundly isolated is how I felt.
Then “Crocodile Dundee” opened in the U.S. later that year. All of a sudden, Australia existed to the U.S. for the first time, it seemed. These ads came later, when Hoges had gained some recognition.
It wasn’t until the Internet that any news was more readily available, outside of occasional stories about bushfires and elections.

I spent most of 1983 in New York, staying with the family of my boyfriend (later, husband) whom I'd met while travelling in the Middle East. I couldn't believe the level of ignorance about Australia. I was treated like some very exotic creature, it was hilarious. And yes I was complimented on my ability to speak English.

The second ad you looked at was aimed at domestic tourism within Australia. Trying to encourage Australians to see Australia instead of going overseas.

Our previous Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, was involved in the "Where the bloody hell are ya" advertisement and was supposedly sacked from Tourism Australia for some dodgy deals associated with the campaign.

Paul Hogan was an absolute legend. You should watch his movie documentary, it’s really humorous and informative.

We do cook prawns on the barbie, sometimes they are green (raw) prawns, and sometimes they have been already cooked (boiled) and are just heated through and maybe charred a little. Delicious!
Shrimp was used to satisfy the target market. US language was used on purpose. This was explained when the ad was first released and people in Australia objected to the use of the word. The 1 800 number is an Australian number you wouldn't be able to call it from the US without adding the Australian international code 61 first.

These ads really worked and made Oz the number one destination for Americans after these aired.....in the US(hence the "shrimp bit)!
As an Australian who actually worked on Prawn trawlers I'm less triggered by "throw another shrimp on the Barbie" mainly because we used to export them and they fully went into boxes saying "fresh shrimp product of Australia" we also graded them to the pound
I've always thought it was 'Throw an extra shrimp on the barbie' but in the add here, he actually says 'slip another shrimp on the barbie'. Have I been delusional for the last 40 years or was there another add where he said 'throw' not 'slip'. weird.....
His most iconic words "thats not a knife, this is a knife" in Crocodile Dundee.

I have always called the little prawns shrimp, The ones that came in prawn cocktails. It makes sence they are tiny.😂
In England I remember people called the smaller prawns 'shrimp'. I found out later that prawns and shrimp are different seafood.
It was originally done saying prawns, but Americans suggested changing it to shrimp, so they didn't have work out what a prawn was, even though you see him holding it, putting on BBQ lol
It was a two factor saying. Shrimp was directed at USA and barbie was directed at Australia. And yes we do put prawns ( shrimp) on the barbie they are delicious
We'll say 'g'day' when you arrive and some of us may say 'hooroo' when you go home.

Yep, Paul Hogan said “shrimp” so Americans would understand it, because the ad was targeting the US. In Australian waters, we have a slightly different crustacean called prawns, which we most definitely put on the barbecue in the form of King Prawns! Also, when you say it, you use a weird accent: barbayyy. It’s just barbie. 😂🇦🇺 Prawns have a shell that flows from head to tail, shrimp have a shell that changes direction with a central scale that sits on top in both directions. Both animals have 10 legs, but prawns have pincers on three pairs of legs, while shrimp just have one clawed duo.
Paul’s’ most famous line was: That’s not a knife, This is a Knife… it’s from his movie Crocodile Dundee 2.

There were several other Paul Hogan ads that the Carlton United Brewery had until they went missing. I was lucky enough to go to a beer launch and they ran all these Paul Hogan ads. The one that sticks out was Paul Hogan walking along the rocks off the coast in Britain with his fishing rod over his shoulder, close by other fishermen when all of a sudden one catches a baby shark and a crowd of people rush in to see this guy fighting to bring this shark up onto the rocks. As he lands the shark on the rocks, the crowd applauds the Fisherman's efforts, Then all of a sudden Paul Hogan leans in, grabs the shark by the gills and I quote "Excuse me mate, do you mind if I borrow some bait". and walks off and throws it on his giant hook. Typical Paul Hogan humour.
I love the second ad, always have; esp him visiting auntie, but she's in Perth.
Bar Bay??? A shrimp on a bar bay??? If you can't get that part right, then it's obvious you'd have trouble knowing what a prawn is.
First time I've seen some of these ads and I live in Australia lol. I wasn't even born yet when a lot of these ads came out.

We def put prawns on the BBQ growing up, its a thing that for sure does happen here. We eat them all different ways. In my family on the BBQ was a big thing. Aussie here. :)
He did these ads for free. They worked a treat. The minute Hoges made a few bob overseas, Australia decided to tax him to buggery.
Politicians are all arseholes.
They didn’t 'decide' to tax him, and politicians had nothing to do with it, unless you believe they should give tax cuts to high income earners. He moved into the next tax bracket, which had been in place for decades, and was automatically taxed - the same as we would be if we made that sort of money. And many, if not most countries tax their citizens for what they earn overseas.
Ryan, you need to bite the bullet and get down here for a holiday. You'll have a blast

The thing that’s amazing is Australia hasn’t really changed much from Paul Hogan’s add from years ago. Only thing I should mention is it’s very costly down here. You might not have to tip but the prices are ridiculous.
The Shrimp was a suggestion the the American consultants. We all hated it from the word go.
The 2nd one was targeted internally to get Australians to holiday within Australia.
These ads put Australia on the map, literally back then!

If you take the lakes out of the equation, the actual land content of Australia is SLIGHTLY more than the USA.

Paul Hogan has talked in recent years about the shrimp thing. He said yes, he understands Aussies don't like it being called a shrimp, but the ad wasn't aimed at them, it was aimed at Americans, so it would have been silly to call it a prawn to millions of Americans.

True shrimp is not commonly found in Australia, it's much more common to encounter their cousins: prawns, and we certainly don't put them on the barbecue.
I saw an interview with a 21 year old woman at a college, When asked if you were in the UK could you speak their language she said no they speak European.
I'm also sad to say I remember those ads, getting so old 😭
I mean you can do all those things in USA as well, you have snow, water canyons everything else.
You and your family must visit Australia, spend some time hearing different versions of Aussie accents, learning Aussie slang (and Aussie swear words - we are quite adept) and seeing us just being Aussie.

Barossa Valley is a wine growing area in South Australia, just north of Adelaide. Say out loud: toss, Ross, Rossi, rossa, bahrossa, Barossa.
While much smaller and less publicised, there are some very good wines from the NSW southern highlands. Always good for a tasting and often results in some careful purchases.

Shrimps are very small, about an inch or so. Prawns are MUCH bigger and yes, we DO put prawns on the barbie.

First ad was to wake up yanks, second ad was to show there's more to Australia than gold coast QLD or Sydney NSW, the third one was done about twenty years later than the first one.

In the second ad, the place in South Australia is pronounced Ba Ross A Valley. I live a couple of hours drive from there. It’s beautiful. The 3rd ad was banned in England due to the woman saying the word Bloody. Lol
Yes, the Barossa Valley is a beautiful and relaxing part of the world. I'm lucky enough to live 30 minutes away and we spend a lot of our weekends there and also the Adelaide hills which is only a short drive away.
