My husband was on his bike and only doing 40 km p.h. when someone cut in front of him and caused him to fall. He slid on his front for about 5 metres. He was wearing helmet, shorts, steel cap boots, armoured gloves and an armoured jacket. He tore up the jacket and shredded his boots and gloves but they protected him and he only ended up with a sprained wrist and some minor grazes. The toes of his boots kept his legs relatively safe, but only by luck. He learned his lesson and has never again ridden without leg protection. He either wears leather pants or armoured jeans.

Long time Aussie motorcyclist here (40+ years of riding). The proper gear is as follows:
Full leathers, i.e. leather pants and jacket _specifically designed for motorcycling;_
    Proper reinforced steel-capped motorcycle boots;
    Sturdy, well-padded gauntlets, and of course;
A good quality full-face helmet _with the chin strap fastened._ That strap is there for a very good reason.
Now - the WRONG gear: Old jeans or shorts, cheap and flimsy running shoes, and a tee-shirt leaving you bare-armed. When I see people riding like that - and I do - I shudder. I've seen what severe road-rash does to human flesh - skin scoured away to reveal raw meat, or even bone. You really don't want that...
There's a saying in biking circles: Dress for the slide, not for the ride. You may feel warm in the summer, but it's better to have sweat come out of you instead of blood.

Proper gear does not necessarily mean full leathers. I've known a number of guys who wouldn't wear gear because it is too hot in summer, so ride in T-shirt and shorts. Not me, I survived a slide in Kevlar Jeans and light weight summer jacket, leather motorcycle boots and leather gloves, helmet of course. Only minor grazes and a bruised knee . The Kevlar Jeans and jacket did a great job of holding together, not even torn. Replaced all gear anyway.
The point I'm trying to make is if it's too hot and that is what is holding you back from riding in proper protective gear then get more suitable gear. There is never an excuse not to

My best friend was just driving along normally through the suburbs doing the speed limit (50kms an hour in residential suburbs) when a three year old ran out in front of him. Despite slamming on the brakes he hit the little kid who had escaped his house and ran out on the road... the results were abhorrent and the little guy is now a vegetable, can't walk talk or communicate. In 1970 the state of Victoria had a campaign run by our Herald-Sun newspaper “Declare War on 1034” which was the number of deaths on Victoria’s states roads for the year alone, this was 53 years ago so if you compare that number to the 2021 number of a similar amount for the whole of Australia as you pointed out and if you multiply the number of vehicles on Australia’s roads probably 400 percent and with the millions added to our population since 1970 the current number has dramatically dropped, the 1034 lives lost on our states roads in 1970 spurred our state government to bring in a law to make the wearing of seat belts mandatory and as a matter of fact Victoria was the first place in the Western World to legislate for this! Also the advent of Random Breath testing and other measures all have had quite a significant impact of reducing the country’s road toll, as per motorcyclists safety clothing we have mandatory crash helmets since the 1950’s in Victoria and as far as clothing goes Kevlar reinforced jeans and jackets play a big part in survivability and as per myself I will not get on my motorcycle and ride irrespective of the weather without boots, jacket and gloves at the very least, I cannot believe that as you say some motorcyclists in the US don’t wear a helmet! well to me that is insane I mean how much do you value your life? I do see younger idiots here in summer time just wearing a helmet but with shorts a T shirt and sneakers or thongs on, I always cringe when I see this as my wife being a nurse has told me some horror stories with the maiming of many a motorcyclist when she worked in hospitals E R department

There is an extended one where the family leaves a family event, like a bbq or something, they pass a police vehicle and the dad gets nervous, they pass without issue and he sighs in relief, and then it is pretty much where you caught the rest of it.

The TAC is the Victorian “Transport Accident Commission” and amongst other things, they produce driving safety adverts. The couple of adverts you have watched are only a small part of the full footage. Eg the family in the speeding car pass someone else getting a ticket, they pass a truck and also miss a turnoff, and as their attention is diverted the accident occurs. Helmets in Australia are compulsory, but protective clothings isn’t. Riders should be covered from top to bottom with boots, leather jacket, leather pants and gloves, etc. Regarding speed impacts, my mother was 13 when hit by a car and suffered a fractured skull with ongoing issues, so I do agree with safer driving limits in built up areas, but bring the speed limit down form 60 kph to 40 ~ 30 kph in many locations is ridiculous and places all of the responsibility on the drivers and almost nothing on the pedestrians.

Ryan, the brutally direct PSA's were pioneered in Australia, so drink driving, smoking, drugs, etc... in the early 2010's the ads took a sarcastic dark humorous twist, like the one you think is about skin cancer or water safety at the beach, but no it's about school truancy and adult literacy. - it was a group of teens running down the beach, then they start exploding, pan back to the sign on the fence they passed, "Warning: Mine Field".

I can’t remember if it was an Australian or New Zealand ad but it was about some guy speeding and another guy pulls out on to the road but doesn’t see him and suddenly everything pauses, they both hop out the car and the guy that made the mistake of not noticing the other guy that happened to be speeding basically starts begging the speeder to not hit him, he’s got his son in the back, he made a mistake, he’s sorry. And the speeding dude just replies with “there’s nothing I can do, I’m sorry.” Something along those lines.
It’s a very powerful ad because it plays on the emotional aspect but more importantly, it shows something that ads like these tend to not mention and that is OTHERS make mistakes too. If you change your behaviour, you can better account for others mistakes. If the guy in the ad hadn’t been speeding, he could’ve stopped in time.

Seeing the motorcycle ads always puts the wind up me a bit as all of my brothers rode at some point in their lives, along with many family friends. My eldest and the youngest brothers were both big into road bikes. My eldest was into Suzuki Katanas, the youngest had a Honda CB900F Bol D'or as his first bike (before the legislation change to restrict the size of the engine capacity relative to the rider's experience). He could lift the front wheel of that thing for the full length of our street. We lived on the side of a hill, so the driveway was downhill and the road was uphill, and about a kilometre and a half to the main road, he'd pick it up and go like the clappers... mostly to piss off the neighbour across the street (nasty piece of work who hated everyone in the street because most of us were public housing and she owned hers...loooong story...) and for the fun of it...😏 where was I...oh yeah, donor cycles... the boys always wore the best safety gear they could get hold of. After hearing horror stories from mum's best friend who was an operating theatre nursing sister and a survivor of a pretty bad motorcycle accident herself, they always wore the gear rain hail or shine. My youngest son is also a rider and won't leave the house without all of the gear on. It has saved his life on the three occasions he has been involved in crashes, none of which were his fault but would still have been a whole lot nastier if he was squidding.
If you're going to spend a 4 or 5k on a bike, spend another k or so on good gear that'll keep all ya squishy bits together and where they're supposed to be...😏

Anything the ads don't scare into you should be covered by your friend being killed when HIS friend decides to show off and flip the car three times through a busy intersection at peak hour.
Whatever you think is more important than watching the road and checking your speed, it's not.

The lucky ones: the dashes means seconds. There are longer versions of those ads. 30, 45, 60 and 90 secs.
The 90 second cinema version is chilling.

The 15" refers to it being a 15 second version of the ad. There would be a 30 second standard version that gives you more info, then after that has been broadcast for a whinge they'll start showing the short version to remind people of it.

I'm in Queensland, Australia. In suburbs and towns now, in residential areas, the limit is 50kms/hr. For this reason.
Around school zones, during 7--9:30 and 2:30-4 the limit is 40.
Apparently though, for emergency doctors, if you want to learn how to deal with MVAs, Australia is the place.
Stabbings, London or South Africa. Gunshots NY or Chicago etc. But car accidents, with our wide open places and so far to travel, its Australia.

The motorcycle clothing one is truely relevant. I wear protective boots, Kevlar jeans, helmet (full face), jacket and gloves when riding. The boots saved my ankle in a relatively minor accident. The outer leather got cut through but the inner protection stopped it going further. I still ended up with ligament damage due to ankle being pinned whilst rolling, but that was it. No cuts or scrapes anywhere. If I wore running shoes, like some idiots, it would have been a different story. Wear the protective gear regardless of whether it is a short or long ride.

Hi, Australian here. My Son rides a motorbike, he wears protective gear every time. Helmet, motorcycle pants, Jacket and boots. The pants jackets both have special plates built into them that doesn't degrade the way jeans and normal leather jackets do if they come off and are dragged along the ground. They also have protection at the ribs and back.

The last video with the guy getting hit carrying the pizza I watched in the early internet days and it had a huge affect on me. I had no idea it was an ad and thought someone just happened to record this guy getting annihilated on the road. It didn't have any of the ad related content before or after so there wasn't any context. There isn't a time when crossing the street, even today, that I don't think about it. Although it was intended for drivers to slow down, it had great affect on this pedestrian! 😄

I came off my bicycle when I was in high school, coming down a hill and hit a patch of gravel. Momentum kept me going the same direction, but gravity meant I nearly ended up taking a dirt nap; 20-odd years later I still have scars from it, and I've had a couple of pieces of gravel that were DEEP in my skin finally make their way out over the past 5 years. That was at probably 20-25k/h. I can't imagine NOT wearing proper protective gear when on a motorbike. I have a few friends who are motorbike riders, and one of them always says "spills are a matter of WHEN, not IF." Her philosophy is to make sure that she's taken as many precautions as possible so that when she does come off her bike, she can walk away from it.

The second advert, you are watching the shortened version. They have missed 2 or 3 cops who were either busy or didn’t see them speeding due to larger vehicles being in the way. Several times it shows their speedometer being higher than the limit.

the 15" means it is a 15 second long ad (15' would be 15 minutes). The letter after are the rating PG is parental guidance (ie recommended for 12years+) M is mature (recommended 15 years +) this would align with rating of the TV program they could be shown during, so kid friendly programing wouldn't get the more graphic ads.

Motorcycle riding gear has a number of different options.
There's the traditional leather which some purists say is the only safe gear to wear (and which is not correct), there's heavy duty synthetic gear which is designed to be slippery when heated by friction, so you slide rather than roll and theres my preferred option which is "regular" clothing that has reinforced linings, often using Kevlar and the like.
They almost always have stiff padding in the knees, buttock, elbows and spine.
I unfortunately "tested" my gear out years ago. Not even the slightest bit of damage to my zip up hoddie (looks like a normal hoodie, until you feel the pads and see the Kevlar labels inside it).
My elbow however wasn't as lucky, it took the full weight of me and my bike and was badly dislocated (despite the thick elbow pad).
I am still unable to straighten my arm fully and am frequently in pain from it (either do to reaching for ornlifting something, or just random aches and pains).
Fortunately, I can still ride and the accident hasnt dampened my love for two wheels.
Oh, and the accident was at slow speed and caused by loose stones in an intersection. In hindsight, if I straightened up and rode up the kerb, I could have kept it upright with only some embarrassment.
Trying to continue the turn after I regained control / traction left me not enough road to complete the turn.

The TAC is the Traffic Accident Commission- it’s basically insurance. If you have an accident on a Victorian road, the TAC looks after your healthcare and rehabilitation. It’s in their interest to prevent injury. That’s why they are so full on with their advertising.

My brother was wearing full riding leathers, proper motorcycle boots and a helmet when he was hit by a car. His helmet saved his brain and his leathers and boots saved his body. The leathers got shredded and he had full gravel rash. A couple of weeks in hospital but he walked out.

Those clips were tame compared to others that have aired on our tele here in Aus. and our local speeds are at 50 kmh/30mph in built up areas with main roads at 60 to 70kmh/40-45 mph depending on the zone. Open highway is 100 kmh or 60 mph in Victoria. Speed limits change per state and for the most part everyone ignores the ads and drive at the posted speed.... most people but not all.

I was around when random breath testing started with “booze buses” in the 1980s. The drinking culture and the driving culture were dangerous and deeply ingrained over generations. People enjoyed taking their powerful cars out for long drives, and of course if you live in the country and want to go out on the town for a night, driving home was expected. So these ads had to be powerful and not beat around the bush. There was a point that I personally thought they went too far but I guess some people have to be thoroughly shocked into being sensible.

A saying among motorcyclists is, Dress for the slide, not the ride. you can buy Kevlar lined and padded jeans for riding if your too cool for leather.
