  • This is an update on the the Bilstein 5160 and 6112's that I replaced the factory Rancho's that GM puts on the Z71. Here are links to all of the products used in this installation:

    I went with the 5160's over the 5100's due to the Chevy Shake issue and I really wanted to be sure I could rule out shocks as a component so I went one step further.

    Glad you have had positive experiences. My 5160’s failed within 3-4 months on my Tundra PRO. I then tried to have the factory Bilstein remote reservoirs rebuilt by Performance Shock Inc in California and Bilstein sent them a firm letter and said they would not send the rebuild parts. I will say living in Colorado the cold winters seem to have took their toll on the 5160s in a fairly quick manner.

    Great video. Two things I might add. I have the Bilstein 6112/5160's as well. However, I recommend 1 change. The recommended change is replacing the leaf spring shackles with Coachbuilder. I cannot begin to explain the vast difference of a much more supple ride with the combination of the rear Bilstein 5160s and Coachbuilder shackles over OEM, both on and especially off-road. There will be a lot less rear axle hop off-road.

      I have a 2011 Sequoia Limited, and I’m contemplating this too. I would love to know how yours turns out. I love the big Beast, but it has oem shocks, and there’s tons of body roll and head toss...

    • @fury2200
      @fury2200 3 роки тому

      @@watchingforhisreturn4709 really happy with it. I did not know what to expect especially when everyone says that the new shocks are stiffer. I figured it would be bumpier on pavement but that would be the trade-off for not bottoming out on the dirt road.
      It really is all-around better. Really impressed. Well worth going above the OEM shocks without breaking the bank and getting crazy on the expensive stuff.
      I chose the roughly 2 or 3 inch lift( shock setting on the Bilstein, not a lift kit) in the front. Apparently installing coil spring spacers or a bigger coil springs in the back is quite an ordeal so I’m not going to put money into that. As a result the truck rides nose high which is a little funny but now that I’m used to it, I laugh at the kids that we should’ve put it higher.
      No regrets at all about 1000 miles in.
      Also got Nitto ridge grappler tires to go with it and they seem to be way better for the dirt road. Well worth doing on a 2011 I think. We have 230,000 miles.
      I did the 6112’s in front. 5100 in back. You get a good peak of the front ones easily. Can’t see the back ones.
      Good luck!!!

Other than the sagging suspension feel, you’d never tell it isn’t brand new by looking at it or driving it. I currently have rear spacers in my cart along with the shocks, I wonder how involved it is? I’m sure the Nitto’s really complement the looks, besides being a great tire! I run Michelin’s, and for the 20-30% it spends off road, they’ve been great aside from lacking an aggressive look.

    Yes but the non reservoir rears are lifetime warrantied, and the reservoir shocks are only 90 days so you need to weigh what is important to you with those key differences, the more expensive ones will handle heat better but if you do off road significantly you need to be aware you will be out $200 after 3 months if they do not hold up...

      @@thollingsworth4910 The ride is improved from factory, it's just as smooth with no bounce. That's why I went with the 6112's because they're thicker than the 5100 they absorb the smaller bumps better. And they come with springs that are tuned to work with them. One thing you have to keep in mind is the tires, they play a big part in ride quality. A lot of guys tend to increase psi when you upgrade tires, to maintain stock ride you need to run tires at 35psi. I'm running BFG KO2's I've increased mine to 40 psi to get better MPG's and it seems to have kept close to the same ride quality as stock. I did run it at 35 psi and it was better than stock in every way.

    Stock shocks/struts on my 4Runner lasted 230,000 miles, and were still adequate. I decided to replace them when doing front end overhaul - again, nothing was wrong with any of the suspension components but I lifted it a bit and installed AM UCA's to accommodate lift and to get caster within specs.
    One bilstein strut blew up in less than a year of on-road driving.
    Their warranty is not worth the paper it's written on - the shock is $90, they demand photos (that I provided) but they also want me to send the bad part to them on my dime AND pay for a return replacement shipping if (IF!!!) they (THEY) find it defective which costs you $50. Again, it's the best case-scenario providing they DO find it defective. Otherwise, you are out of shipping cost AND have no strut.
    Sweet deal. NOT! It might be "german engineering" but it's mexican manufacturing and american "business attitude" towards customers.

      FOX warranty is no better if not worst. I blew out a new shock and they didnt just want pictures. They wanted me to take the shock off the truck, pack it up, ship it to the USA (I live in Canada) so they could inspect it and see if it would be warrantied . So I just bought a new replacement shock. Been running Bilsteins on my truck now and I like them better then the FOX 2.0's.

I am old enough to remember when you could pay premium price for a premium product. Today, "brand names" charge you premium price for the same garbage you can get for a fraction of the cost. There is no product on the market without numerous negative reviews (unless there are 5 reviews only, and all were written by the manufacturer). The best scenario is 80% positive, and you can only hope not to end up in the remaining 20%.

Might just buy 5100s, since they're way cheaper. Ah, but you can't use the springs from the 6112s with them, so now I have to go buy different springs. Digressive valving is kind of a weird thing. I wouldn't want it for a truck or fourwheeler. What I use are the Bilstein 7100s, which are linear-valved, same as what Fox and King use. The 7100s are also easily rebuildable/revalvable. And you can control the N2 pressure (recommended is 180-220 PSI) via a Schrader valve, so you're not stuck with the 300+ PSI that the 51xx shocks use. Pressure that high doesn't help the ride any. Linear valved and lower pressure is the way to go, IMHO.
      Unfortunately, Bilstein doesn't make strut/coilover versions of the 7100s. They're only offered in "universal" eye-eye shocks, either with or without reservoirs.

      @@SDwriter.and.surfer i agree with you, had some 5100 of my 15' yukon and they sre far better than stock in terms of rebound and ride control, however they are also far stiffer of the little bumps and cracks and also cause the wheel to slam into the ground when briefly airborn. This got me thinking that although the 6112 would probably be highly pressurized, the issue is also the springs. Now the 6112 comes paired with springs that have double the ammount of wounded coil, that means its going to be more compliant. Really wondering whether to get the 6112s or not...cant afford to be a test mule yet again :p.

    I have 5100's on all four corners on my 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 (6.2L). I started with the rears and immediatly noticed how much better they are vs the stock Ranchos. Then, I had the front struts replaced (1.25" lift setting). The front bouncy-bounce is now gone...firmer ride, but not too 5-ton military truck like feeling. As for the rears, I am considering replacing with the reservoir shocks...but, not sure if it is really needed. Are they too firm vs the 5100? Lastly, Bilstein is pronounced "Bill Stine" not "Bill Steene". Call the company or ask any native German speaker.

      I have a 2020 Silverado with the Z71 and I'm trying to find a solution to the bouncieness over dips and the body roll on corners without sacraficing too much ride comfort. I'm considering the 6112/5160 setup. When you said the ride was firmer, how firm are we talking about compared to the Ranchos? Is it harsh where you feel every seam in the road, or is it just a little more firmer than stock?

    • @ChrisDIYerOklahoma
      @ChrisDIYerOklahoma Рік тому +1

      @@DucDNA -- IMHO - A "little" firmer vs the stock Ranchos. Overall feel and control is improved. You don't feel seams on the road...unlike hard shocks that will remove fillings. The Bilsteins are simply better built for a more controlled and predictable ride. Hope this helps. This is second truck I have these on and love them. I have had hard shocks and soft Ranchos...the Bilsteins are right in the middle with proper engineering and fitment

    Also I hear fox customer service is shiat as well.....king is right down the street from me and eibach another 20 minutes.....I would prefer to do business with a place I can actually go to if problem arises

      For your general street use and an occasional low speed gravel road are you really seeing the intended benefit of the high capacity options you installed, when a properly sprung 5100 package does the exact same thing for $700 or less depending on what springs you need up front? 20 mile stretches of desert washboard at 40+ mph, sure, but for most people all that heat dissipation capacity you paid a $500 surcharge for is unused.

Pay no mind that I had skin cancer from too much sun exposure so anytime I am going to be in the sun for any length of time I cover up and/ or wear a shit load of sunscreeen. Also, just because someone keeps their truck clean, doesn’t mean they don’t take it off road or on job sites, it means they take care of their shit. I spent 15 years as a construction PM and have had my truck buried to the frame rails having to be pulled out by tractors. This guy doesn't know anything about shocks. The Rancho shock is a twin tube shock. Bilstein is a monotube shock. The 6112 means Bilstein is including the suspension spring. Bilstein sells the 5100 series which is shock only. Monotube is different technology. More responsive. Reservoir means nothing on road.
