Personally, I’d pay more to have the opportunity to own a peace of the Tavarish car history. You rank so high up on the list. You actually work on your cars, and you drive them. All of this adds to the story. So hopefully later this year my situation changes, and I’d buy a Ford Taurus from you! Really anything……That I could afford anyway

With 185 cars he can only drive each car (assuming he drives it for a day) once a year during the summer/spring seasons. Twice a year if he drives them all year round. At least they're well-maintained.

He has been sharing the stories of his cars on his own channel for years, of course - probably in more detail than is possible here, since each car is an episode onto itself on Jay Leno's Garage.
Jay has said numerous times over the years how the story a car carries with it is as valuable to him as the car itself
      - and as a guy only 10 years behind him in age, I agree whole-heartedly.
As *stewards* of our old cars (most of us with one, maybe two - and Jay with 185!) we are also keepers of their
stories; it's our responsibility to share both with others as such, for that is the essence of the hobby itself.
Keep the hobby (and the cars) alive!

I drove my 1967 Triumph TR4A IRS to the shoot to show Jay I was a car guy too. My assistant drove my SUV with all the equipment. That was a real fun day. Which is what makes him so special, including the little fire mishap he recently had: He does not love the idea of a highly priced car collection, he loves every bloody single car and their histories while being mad enough to actually go out and feel, run, drive those personally to meet other people mad enough to actually drive _their_ special collection pieces to a meet where he's a car guy between other petrol heads.

As of November last year it was reported by the dupont registry the collection could be worth around 52 million. Of course many things can change that number so what we've heard in this video is considerably higher. Also not taken into account are the 160 motorcycles which add a lot of value. I know this channel is for cars but they should have included the bikes as well considering they are part of the entire collection.

I would think that number is way off, his Maclaren F1 is in the 20 mill range these days. So the entire collection has to be way more. Just my 2 cents.

Appraising the Nethercutt Collection would make a great episode. Nethercutt started collecting back in the 40’s or 50’s way, way before anyone else, and he had amazing taste.
Got to love Jay. His story about squatting in homes when he didst got to LA adds a human touch along with his recent accident. I bet his insurance rates went up more than the average US salary. It amazes me he has never spent his Late Night Show pay. I never really thought of him making much as a stand-up comedian, but that is his he has paid for pretty much everything. Him having everything from VW bugs to Baker Electric to F1 shows his love of the entire category called automobiles.

i think what makes Jays car's worth more is that his collection is one of the most documented in history mainly via his UA-cam channel. It will tell the story long after he his gone. Then the details he tells and the way his restorations are done and documennted. Then lots of them are rarer. But it's the story as everyone says.

I think so many of Jay's cars are so hard to value because they are so rare that I think it's hard to find a comp. Even some of the more common models of cars that he has like a Pontiac Firebird are super rare specs like his Firebird with the inline 6 and performance handling package. Jay is such a cool collector and his encyclopedic car knowledge is absolutely incredible. Heck, I'd just love to see what the whole list of 185 cars is!

I like Ed's shrewd negotiating and the stories around that, to be honest though I prefer Jay telling his stories himself together with his mechanics and friends; he's such an enthusiast when it comes to his cars and their stories that I'm afraid these stories would lose a good part of their intensity being told "second hand", and we still will have to have the second hand version after Jay went to pit stop heaven some time in the future.

The fact that his collection has a lot of basic cars in it, is what makes it so interesting and why indeed as a whole for a museum piece it would be very interesting. They are rare cars and cars with stories and those tend to linger around in ones mind vs an some number Mclaren long tail or whatever, which is amazing, but it is not really something that speaks to the long therm imagination.

I met Jay at the Burbank Autobooks (yes there was a book shop just filled with repair manuals and other paraphernalia back in the day) shop back in the 1988, i was looking at the BMW books as i was restoring a 1969 2002 and Jay stood next to me looking at the Buick Roadmaster books. This was before the Tonight show and mega fame so i wasn't really sure who he was at first then i was like oh this is the Doritos guy (he did Doritos commercials back in that time). He was and is a CAR guy at heart and loves talking about cars. He could have stood there for hours sharing stories of grease deep into a car. It is one my cherished memories.

I often think about what his garage will become after he passes away. I assume it will become a museum in it of itself, and I hope he has that in his will and has everything in place to convert the whole place into a well-maintained museum that the public can come and view. I would love to see his collection up close and perhaps even see some of the cars in action, should they set up such an exhibit. But I also know he wants to preserve all of these cars, so whatever happens after he's gone, that will need to be a huge part of it.

Ralph Lauren went for basically the high end of everything, had to get the most valuable and doesn't have the cheaper cool stuff Jay does.
