Met Jay once. I was at a place called Ed and Vern's Rock Store. It was a little general store/six pack shop,, in Cornell canyon near Malibu. On any given weekend there was a sea of motorcycles and custom cars in and out of the parking lot. You could get a long neck Bud for 1.50 in 1989, while Malibu bars were charging 7 bucks for the same beer. Anyhow, Jay pulled in, in a 1925 Buick maybe? Something strange like that. Well the standing rule out there is; If you see stars out enjoying themselves, don't act like a tourist, leave them alone. Well, he was alone. He walked into the place, bought a beer, walked outside and stood there in the crowd. And everyone ignored him. Which he knew meant that everyone was just trying to respect his privacy but at the same time, he drove that car out there to show it off and was starting to look a little out of place.
So, I looked at my buddy who was out that day with our bikes and said, "Oh this isn't right."
I walked over and said, "Beautiful car Jay. What is that exactly?" He immediately brightened up and smiled. He introduced himself to my friend and asked us if we would like to check it out. We did and he took us over and showed us every inch while he told us all about it.
That dude is as real as it gets. He enjoys who he is and what he does but he likes just being Jay too. Extremely pleasant to converse with.

@@TheSteve1126 sure wish you were the real Vince. There's a lot I'd like to tell him. Such as I was the biggest XFL fan the first time and waited 20 years for it to come back. I'm in Pittsburgh. I had season Tix in 2020 in New York.
I had already drove up and attended the first two home games and was about to go up for the 3rd.
Broke my heart in a way I can barely describe.
If you were Vince I'd tell you 3rd times a charm and don't let the bastards keep you down.

@@MasonVGates If he did I would be astounded and it would only have stuck in his mind for the sheer oddness of the situation. But that stuff has to happen to famous people out there all the time. I was on my way back from a Steelers Browns game in Cleveland, going back to Pittsburgh and we stopped at a rest stop that had a McDonalds. There were 4 Steelers in there, Joey Porter was one and they went through the same thing. They had just won on the road in double overtime and they wanted to have a fuss made over them but no one wanted to be the asshole that started the chaos. And it got a little weird and again I found myself being the one willing to say hi and then others joined in.

Totally accurate, too. Years ago I knew a much older guy that was confirmed in the mafia. He was always very nice, but you just got this vibe like this guy can just mentally collapse at any moment. There's no "off" switch in his brain. Like if most of us, if we got into a fight, if we knocked someone out that would be the end of it. This dude would've grabbed a brick and just kept hitting your face until it was mush. I always did my best to end conversations and move on. Even in his 60's this guy would probably do some damage to me. He'd be all in

Justin: Both Leno & Conan were basically pawns to the Networks. They were competing for positions. The network wanted to make sure someone was ready to take over the Tonight Show when Leno left & they promised it to Conan before Leno was ready to leave. Leno did leave but Conan wasn't getting the ratings. Had Conan done well enough, that would have been it but ratings went down & honestly, he was awkward. He would have probably grown into it but the network decided they wanted Leno back.
That's a drastically simplified version but point is, they were simply competing for The Tonight Show & Leno won. That entire fiasco was the network's fault. They were simply competing for the job.

Jay Leno would be quite tough in a fistfight cause his face is so big
& heavy and leathery which is perfect for absorbing punches. I
wouldn't fight him. It would take dozens of hard punches to make that
face hurt enough for him to tap out.

This was a fun one. As a 36 year old, I only know Jay Leno as the "tonight show guy". I watched it for years as a teenager, and always just thought of his monologue as kind of g rated humor that wasn't really my thing but it of course always worked for the show, and it's how that format works. I had no idea how much he had worked before or any of the amazing history he casually details in this interview. Really enjoyed hearing him talk from start to finish and gained A LOT of respect for him (which is a phenomenon that seems to happen often on Joe's show, ha ha). Only knock I'd have on him after the episode is you could tell he wasn't the best listener or maybe better put he just wanted to talk mostly because when Joe would mention something ("I was a Boy Scout in New Hampshire also",etc...) he wouldn't bite on it at all. Anyway really loved hearing Jay talk and some of those stories were craaaazy!!

People think of Jay and associate him with the Tonight Show, which was a mass appeal, middle-of-the-road, mainstream America type of experience, and he was great in that role. But it's a huge mistake to underestimate Jay Leno as a comedian. He's a killer, a pro's pro, a guy who would be the Dean if there was a college for comedians. I laughed through that entire podcast and enjoyed it tremendously. Thanks for sharing!

My autoshop teacher was amazing! He thought us everything! Not just cars! How to fill out job applications, resumes, how to balance a check book. One of our main assignments was a mock job interview with him, and you got the job or you didn't. He did that because no one else was... He knew most of us were never interested in going to college, but he still put more students into trade schools in many different feilds! More than ALL of the students who went to college or JC's combined, and the completion rates weren't even close to the trade school grads, including myself. Unfortunately for our town the school hated his "style of teaching" and eventually fired him... It was a good thing overall... He was able to move to a bigger school near by so he helps more kids now, many of whom are transferring from our town to have him as a teacher. As long as you tried, put in actual effort, in the shop, and classroom, you got an A. I learned more about life than cars in his classes over 4 years, and I learned A LOT about cars!
A good teacher is worth their weight in gold!!

It's interesting you say that cuz I had a mechanics teacher who helped teach me, and probably most others, self respect and responsibility in one simple way. If you were late he'd ask if you got a late slip, so weird to think of those now lol, I'd say "yes" and go to show it to him and he says "It's ok, I trust you." And that meant allot, cuz it was my 1st taste of someone in authority actively showing confidence in me, and that GAVE me confidence.
He did a few other things too but that was my lasting memory of him. Even the usual trouble makers respected him and behaved in his class.
