Jay Leno is the E.F. Hutton of the classic car world. You want to hear what he has to say. Makes a lot of sense and good observations from a lifetime of experience owning and maintaining 180 automobiles and 160 motorcycles that are driven or ridden.
Just remember it's all entertainment whether you got the money to buy or you can't afford it. More poignantly put they are "passionate purchases" and I would add for the rich.
Lots of fun, as always. My first car was a used Corvair in the late 60’s, always enjoy hearing hearing Jay talk about them. And too I’ve been a car nut my whole life, mostly restoring British roadsters. One or two quick points that were glossed over. Fixing up an $800 car and selling it for $1200 is a 50% profit. That’s always a good move, but even moreso when you allow for the difference in monetary value at the time. That $400 profit in the 60’s would be a $4000 profit today.
As a teenager my friend had an early Corvair. We drove that thing to death and occasionally pushed it to it's handling limit. Two years in a row we ended up on the same lawn and got away with it.. Would not have tolerated that from my own kids. We had a blast!
Jay is a very nice guy we were friends for 12 years, went to his home in Beverly Hills on tower rd. Dinner with him and Mavis, we went motorcycle ridding many times, hung out with him in his garage in Burbank, when I visited him in Cal. very sorry about his recent burn accident, hope he recovers, and keeps the chin. 😃
Jay hit on something really important that most manufacturers have forgotten or ignored and it is killing the personal transportation industry. Find ways to make things cost less and make them affordable to sell a ton of them. The pursuit of luxury is making most things too expensive.
Hyundai had a good formula for making affordable cars 20 years ago. Keep it simple, build it right. I sold them back in those years; you could get a very nice Elantra for $12K. Today, with all the electronics even an Accent can cost $20K after dealer markup. So they will no longer make it for '23. The Elantra now costs as much as a Civic, $22-30K. But watch that your engine does not catch fire and incinerate the car. Around Northern Westchester, most new vehicles are huge pickup trucks or Jeeps, cost be damned, $100 fill up no problem. EVs start at $55K, get on the waiting list. But keep in mind the Li-ion battery technology will soon be obsolete.
@@mossmiller The Chevrolet Bolt EV is $26,600, the Nissan Leaf is $27,000. There's no cleaner or more efficient way of propelling a car then renewable electricity → battery → motor, and most of the hyped replacements for lithium-ion batteries, none of which are being manufactured in enough volume to make automotive EV packs, are variations on lithium battery chemistry.
@@jasonkillsformomy You are so right. I rented a Sonata a few years ago, and when I came out the next morning the front bumper cover had popped off. But my '06 Sonata still going strong at 135,000 miles, on its third owner.
@Jo Mma every recent study concludes an EV powered by the current grid mix is better for the environment than a gasser over the life of a car. Go read the ICCT study and the one from researchers at the University of Exeter, Cambridge, and Nijmeggen. The only argument is whether the EV repays the environmental cost of its heavy recyclable battery after 7,500, 15,000, or 30 000 miles. It's intuitively obvious when you realize a 35 mpg gasser burns through 10 tons of fossil fuel over 120,000 miles. Since the majority of new generation is wind and solar, because they're cheap and quick, every EV on the road will only get cleaner in the future.
Leno seems to be well grounded. But his immigrant remark is wrong. America does welcomes immigrants, but they must come in LEGALLY, not ILLEGALS from everywhere. Can anyone just go into Leno’s garage and take his cars for a ride. I don’t think so.
US lacks a rational, enforceable immigration system to meet our economic needs. What we do have is ignored by some immigrants and manipulated by US businesses.
My dad had a 1963 4 door Corvair. I remember when we took it on vacation he was always making sure the fan belt was working properly. We drove four thousand miles on that vacation.
Elon does not say the world will end tomorrow if we do not end fossil fuel. In fact, he said we probably should keep pumping oil. Because human suffering does not offset climate change (formerly known as global warming). But as a human species, we need to strive for better and transition to better forms of energy, a sustainable energy future. Imagine today still being on horse power or steam engines. How ridiculous is that? Elon prefers nuclear energy.
We've been strip mining for a couple centuries already. Sometimes you just need stuff that's beneficial. What are you willing to give up? Your cell phone?
It seems to be the carbon footprint that people are always worried about. The carbon footprint of the electric car is maybe 10% less. Then, factor in how current battery technology means the batteries are going to puke around 10 years of age, and thus they won't even make it to the average age of a car on US highways right now. If the battery technology improves in respect to longevity, then we will have something to go on.
@@paulstandaert5709 Battery tech these days is lasting quite a bit longer with manufacturers knowing they need to active thermal management, the charge curves used, improved chemistries and providing enough of a buffer so they aren't fully discharged or charged for certain chemistries. They last about 300k km these days with almost 90% of their capacity still intact, of course abusing the battery will reduce that range. The older non thermally managed Ni-Cd EV batteries would be kaput in around 200k km at the most, and would cost half the car's value to replace.
The biggest issue with collecting cars is the storage and keeping financially stable so you're not selling them cheap regardless of it being cars, toys or anything else they'll always be worth bigger money years later
I’m sitting in my house in the SF bayarea during another rolling blackout. They happen every late summer/fall like clockwork. CA is a disgrace, We can’t keep the lights on now what’s going to happen when Gavin gets his way and only EV cars are sold. Crazy!!
Diablo Canyon, PG&E's Crown Jewel at one time when building things like that were as easy as just start digging.... The next question is who's paying for the spent fuel to be kept cool, then the disposal of it? On the surface nuclear power seems really clean till it's time to take the garbage out.......
Electric vehicles are throwaway vehicles. Very few people will want to spend $30k on buying new battery cells to keep their EV on the road. EV batteries can go bad around 100k miles.

I'll always lend Leno an ear.
I think maybe Jay stretches things a little. My main concern is that politics may seek to ban things outright for political gains. In my opinion politicians are the evil in society
They can’t hide the evil any longer.
@@wildvin8476 i hope things change in the future. what is going on now is very concerning to my hobby. Politics in general is concerning to me lately
Growing up in Michigan, our class took a field trip through the Corvair plant in Willow Run near Detroit. I was blown away by the racks and racks of parts. The cars were beautiful!
For 2023, it’s hard to nail down specific predictions for the stock market is because it’s not yet clear how quickly or how much the Federal Reserve can bring down inflation and borrowing costs without tanking buyer demand for everything from homes to cars.

Jay Leno = Great man.
Hi Jay great to see you found time to mention President Trump in this interview and how sad it was that Trump wanted a merit based immigration system but President Biden fixed all that sadness away for you that may destroy many American lives but that sadness gone
Never knew that Leno identifies as a Lib until now.
Still have respect for him as a car guy but that's it.
@@bmwpete65s55 Multi-millionaire liberal California resident. Nice guy but some of his liberal views seem typical pie in the sky ideas. JMO Money and affording life's necessities are not even a thought in his mind.
I could Listen to Jay all day long
Jay is awesome!!! And his car products are great that’s all I use now
Wonderful interview Pras. Thanks for this. 👍
Jay Leno is institution, and we always get bit shy seeing people going old. I appreciate him a lot and see we need to listen a bit.
The more I listen to Jay the more I like him.
Excellent interview ! THANKS!
His car detailer is amazing! Been buying it for a while!
Your car care products are arriving today. I hope I enjoy them as much as this blog.
Great interview! Jay is always great entertainment.
It is only a 50 percent profit if your time and materials are free.
As a teenager my friend had an early Corvair. We drove that thing to death and occasionally pushed it to it's handling limit. Two years in a row we ended up on the same lawn and got away with it.. Would not have tolerated that from my own kids. We had a blast!
Jay has a nice collection saving our history 👍👍
Jay's car care products work really well. They're very reasonably priced and not hard to get hold of. There's my plug, send me a check Jay! Thanks!
Great vid!!
I found it difficult to hear what the interviewer was saying some of the time. Jay was load and clear.
I'm impressed that Leno also has historical knowledge of automotive development and how it has evolved over the decades.
Jay is definitely NOT biting the hand that feeds him, but he does manage to eke out some accolades for Elon
and EVs in general! he played it very well...
Jay is so cool and so smart. Very wise. And what a NICE GUY as well.
Jay is such a fascinating person!
wow Jay bought a new shirt
Probably a restoration.
No more Jean shirt huh lol
Nice to see a celeb who seems like a regular nice person, kinda modest & real, not fake.
Agreed. My ‘66 Monza Corvair convertible is one of the better-looking cars from that era.
Wishing You a speedy recovery from your horrendous accident and a Happy and prosperous 2023..
@@mossmiller "Hyundai" and "build it right" don't belong in the same sentence.
Leno does bring it home!
I like that Jay Leno is old but he’s still smart and loves new better technology like EVs.
If evs are better why does the government have to force people to buy them, hmmmm
That sounds agist to me. 😀
I don't think he mentioned any immigration legalities.
Jay Leno is one of few I look up to.
My dad had a 1963 4 door Corvair. I remember when we took it on vacation he was always making sure the fan belt was working properly. We drove four thousand miles on that vacation.
Elon is a marketing guy. EV’s have their small place, but it will not save the planet. As a fact, the strip mines worldwide are a disaster.
@@johnwren3976 yes.. yes I am willing to give up mobile phones and computers.
Ol Ralph Nader didn't do the Corvair any favors with his book, Unsafe At Any Speed.
The biggest issue with collecting cars is the storage and keeping financially stable so you're not selling them cheap regardless of it being cars, toys or anything else they'll always be worth bigger money years later
Jay knocked it out of the park with Elon Musk
One of my favorite Elon Quotes "There is a huge nuclear reactor that comes out every morning in the sky (sun) so we might as well use the energy."

Evs are the end of the world oh my
Electric vehicles are throwaway vehicles. Very few people will want to spend $30k on buying new battery cells to keep their EV on the road. EV batteries can go bad around 100k miles.
How can someone so intelligent believe that immigrants were banned?
Hey Car guys, LISTEN to Jay... He has a solid grip on what great cars really are. Yep, Corvair included! One of my favorite cars was my 1966 Corsa. But I do have pre-war cars, 50's and 60's cars too. They all have their place in the hobby.
With 18 cars / trucks in my collection (so far) I am catching up to you Jay ! See you on Tik Tok. My favorite vehicles are those that have a STORY behind them. My dream muscle car is the 1970 Dodge Daytona aka 1970-Plymouth Roadrunner with the 440 six pack since their story is a Daytona Track Speed of 210+ mph in the late 60's early 70's which shocked the racing world! . Since they are cost prohibitive to most collectors, I purchased the 440 motor w 6 pack and now, am looking for the shell, and plan a full restoration.
Dodge Daytonas were 1969 models, not 1970.
