Was wondering where your girl if from originally? She asked how to say ferns in English when you both were hiking down from Scottlands highest mountian. Gawd that was awful coming down! I can now see why you were hiking up in the dark!
I was born in Montrose at Charleton Maternity Hospital. We lived in Christies Lane, moving on the Brechin City and the eventually to Bury in Lancashire where my Dad had been stationed during a small part of the War. This is where he met my Mum. We frequently went there for holidays when I was a kid and up to my twenties. This brings back so many happy memories and your right it hasn't changed too much over the years. Thanks so much for doing this video. It was great to hear and see places I know and remember. I love Montrose and I am proud to be Scottish. I am not well enough to get back now so this video was great. Keep well and safe. James.
I've been sick in bed the past few days and have been watching your channel non-stop. I live outside of Chicago, IL USA. Well done! You have made my illness a bit more bearable. Thanks for that.
Hi Alicija and Steve thanks for all your videos. My wife and I really enjoy all your adventures. We spent a month in Scotland last year and fell in love with the land and people. We spent 18 days this past May and going back in October for another 24 days. We are getting too old to rough it, so we enjoy the variety of B&Bs and inns. We have been re-visiting your videos and taking good notes. This trip will start in Islay to visit our favorite smokey whiskies. Then to Oban working our way north to the west side of the NC500. We plan three days from Kyle to Thurso and then take the ferry to Orkney staying for a few days. Once back on the mainland, work our way south to Inverness and then along the east coast to Aberdeen. Never been to Aberdeen so it will be interesting to explore. We then head south to Edinburgh on the coast road and stop in Montrose to see your lovely town. After three days in Edinburgh, we wind up in Glasgow for our flight back home to California. Again, thanks for your videos and keep up the good work.
I‘m so happy that you featured Bamse in this Video. In early April of 2022 I was planning to visit North Cape in the very north of Norway. When I arrived in Honningsvag, the last village before North Cape (located on 71 degrees north) the road up to North cape was closed due to snow and ⛈️. I traveled 2500 km to get there and the last 30 km were closed😢. But as so often when travelling, the real magic happens when things don‘t go to plan. I discovered a statue of a St. Bernhards Dog in this little village at the end (or beginning) of Europe and wanted to find out more about it. So I learned that there is also another statue of Bamse in Montrose and now you showed it to me. thank you so much, Steve. After learning about Bamse (and visiting the northernmost supermarket in Europe and buying dried cod) I wasn‘t disappointed anymore not to reach North Cape.
my wife and i were looking for a place in scotland for our honeymoon. we stuck a pin in a map and luckily it chose montrose.. we stayed at the george hotel and had the most amazing week. would love to visit again sometime.
Excellent, you passed by the Green Park Guest House, where I was brought up until I was 7, with a brief stay above the Lochside Bar as Dad was a Pilot Officer back then in the former RAF base to the north of the Town. I remember the Football club grounds and the original cinema location and swimming where it stood in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Thank you so much. You made this 73-year-old Scot quite homesick.
I grew up in Edinburgh as a kid, moving to outside Montrose as a teenager. I love visiting both now but for very different reasons. In many ways, I've come to appreciate Montrose more having left it some time ago in search of employment! It's a much overlooked town with stunning scenery just beyond it. You'll no doubt be posting vids of St Cyrus beach in its many moods and stunning sunrises. The wildlife centre overlooking Montrose basin is utterly addictive. Then there's the Angus glens, the Grampians and over to the Cairngorms. It's also surprisingly well connected for a small town. Few of my friends believe me in that you can board a train in Montrose and never get off until London (if that's your thing). The East coast line through Montrose, both north and south as some of the best seascape scenery you can experience from a train. Good luck to you both and enjoy that space.
You can also join the train to Plymouth (or Penzance if it’s running that far) which I think is the longest journey in the uk. As you say so much on the doorstep, but not a million miles to the big cities.
I used to see the Penzance train pulling in and did think how remarkable that 2 small towns were connected by one train, yet so far apart. I don't think it runs now and I think the best you can do is 1 change at Waverley but perhaps Steve will prove me wrong.
Hi from Adelaide, South Australia. I’ve just discovered your channel and have been bingeing your Scottish videos. Our 2020 UK trip was postponed and I’ve been taking the time to plan our travels in more detail as we both plan to explore the towns and cities of our Scottish ancestors . Love your blend of history, scenery and services.
Nice the info about Bamse. And the norwegian flag in your small town. Did not know. Will Google Bamse and your town. Nice and fun. Love the beach and small town feeling, cause that s how I grew up and live too here in Norway. 😊🙋♀️🌊🚣♀️🌞🌤☔
Cousin of mine opened first Chinese resturant in Montrose in late 60's on the high street. My dad used to take me on trips from Dundee to Peterhead and we always passed through Montrose - no inland dual carriageway then so we went through all the wee towns like Abroath, Montrose, St Cyrus, Stonehaven, etc. Brings back good memories.
Chinese restaurants are really bad quality nowadays, bad quality ingredients like rubber beef and chicken strips from farm foods, also dirty mushrooms,I can list them if required...waay overpriced, bring back foil containers .
I'm a musician and have played in Montrose many, many times with various different genres of bands (including loads in the Market Arms just over your shoulder at10:42!). Its a lovely place, and I've always found the people to be very warm and welcoming whenever I've been there. Hope I can get back again in the future.
That look on Steve’s face at 8:40 - 8:48 after that “zinger” from Alicja. Even with the shades on that look was priceless…😂👍. A fantastic video overall, I’ve been watching your recent videos and now I’m going back through the catalog of vids. Great insight, keep up the good work both of you.
Thanks Steve, you make it easy to realize just how wonderful Montrose is!! It's a Cool Place, even if it's hot out! I'm from across the pond, Long Island, NY, US but love Scotland. Castles, Whisky, Bag Pipes, what's not to love! Hope to make it there someday. Your videos are Great, I enjoy the bits of humor you put in. Congrats on the move, a good one for sure!
My father was born in Dundee and resided in Wormit before immigrating to the states. I'd love to see the grave of my dad's cousin in Gourdon. The poor kid was a casualty aboard the HMS Malaya at Jutland. I am so grateful for your videos to see Scotland. It is my heritage. Thank you Steve, your content is fantastic! Happy New Year 2025!
In 2018 I joined my brother and his wife in Edinburgh for a trip to Shetland. The train to Aberdeen must have taken us by Montrose. At any rate it was an incredible travel experience that I hope to take again! Thanks for the video!
The Minesweeper statue is affectionately known locally as “The Mannie” (we actually have three of them, the very same statue, one by the beach, one in the high street and one by the harbour beside the Bamse Statue)
Lived in Montrose as a kid 1978-1980. Have many happy memories of riding my purple Raleigh Chopper from Borrowfield where we lived down to the beach and all around town, really. I loved playing in those sand dunes. Took my mum back for some nostalgia in May and we did some of the same walk you did. It’s lovely down by the beach and golf course - some beautiful homes and so peaceful. Saw both my old schools: Borrowfield Primary and Montrose Academy. The high street was a bit sad and shabby though - mum was saying there were lots of nice shops when we lived there. Now just charity shops and pound shops mainly. No criticism of Montrose - it’s been the fate of many town centres (you should see the state of Paisley’s where I live now!). You’re right, Greggs was the highlight. We went into the Market Arms for a drink too! My mum was reminiscing of course and told me my wee brother went fishing in Ferryden one day and rode his bike all the way home to Borrowfield because he needed a pee! 😂 I think you made a great choice - over all Montrose is a nice town in a beautiful setting. I remember saying to mum, I could live here again. I hope you’ll both be very happy there. 🙂
Superb comment, cheers Derek! Aye, the high street is a bit worse for wear, but like you say, holding up better than a lot of towns, and still a good bit of life about the old place.
Thanks Derek for forwarding this to me and thanks Steve for the wonderful video. As Derek said we walked pretty much the same route as you this summer. I now live in 🇨🇦 and both my trip and your video brought back some great memories.
I'm an Australian 🇦🇺 living in Sukhothai, Thailand 🇹🇭. A few years ago we had a heat wave, 40°C or 104°F in the shade for 2 weeks except for one day when it was 43°C or 109°F. We have 3 air conditioners in a one bedroom house. As a child in the 1940s I remember tiger moth aircraft flying overhead in Melbourne Australia. In 1963-64, I was a technical illustrator illustrating spare parts and assembly drawings for Rolls Royce Avon jet engines, used in the Canberra Jet Bombers and Sabre Jet Fighters, by the Royal Australian Airforce. The air museum made me travel back in time. Thanks for the journey.
I just finished your tour of your new hometown Montrose and I had to comment how much I enjoyed it. Your warm narration, fantastic camerawork and impeccable editing make for a truly marvelous video. But above all else, I really love your bits of humor. I always laugh out loud. The topper in this video was the gravestone of the time traveler. Your efforts are truly appreciated. I think you are quite a gem. Thank you!
Some parts of Edinburgh are remarkably rural and quiet, I live 10 minutes from the foot of the pentlands and can go for miles and hardly see a soul, fantastic scenery and well. Then 20 minutes the other way and youre at the high street and can't move for tourists, Brilliant 😄
Loved the wee tour and ending bit struck me, as I have great respect for military members (several in family that have passed on). Steve, I dinnae know you had been in the air branch. Relaxing song at the end there too. Cheers from Canada pal!
Steve, what an absolutely brilliant video! In one fell swoop you have put your new home town on many folks’ “to visit” list, so it’s your own fault if those beaches fill up! 😁 Good work! 👍
Hi mate I am 54 years old today and I am born & bred in Birkenhead near Liverpool and I'm an Everton season ticket holder but have followed Brechin City near you since I was young I have followed you for years mate I also travel all over like yourself you and Alicja keep living your dreams mate
My hometown! I now live on the West Coast but still go back regularly to visit family. Montrose was a lovely town to grow up in and is a friendly community. Lovely seeing familiar sights. I spent many weekends at Lunan Bay and St.Cyrus beach and often walk to Scurdiness when home. Great video. Thanks for showing Montrose in such a positive light. I recommend Charelton Farm in Hillside for a meal/coffee.
I really appreciate how lucky we are. Angus has so many beautiful beaches and glens. I love the fact that there is such a feeling of space. The drawback is being a bit further from the job opportunities, which tend to centre around Edinburgh or Glasgow. But even then, you can commute, and the train journey is a fairly pretty one with lots of coastline. My heart will always be in the Highlands, but Angus has a lot going for it, and is closer to the capital and the central belt for work.
If you've not been already, worth a wee trip up to Hill Of Garvock. It's just up the back of St. Cyrus and there's Tower of Johnston which is not too far a walk from the viewpoint where you park up. Cracking views from the top of the tower if you manage to navigate the very sketchy staircase.
Here in Adelaide, South Australia, no summer is complete without a couple or 3 groups of 3 to 5 days of 40+, occasionally peaking around 45. The 25 you mentioned is more like our spring and autumn. Humidity is low, so it's liveable. Love your work mate. You come across as the good bloke you obviously are.
This video started a chain of events that has resulted in me buying the Montrose football shirt. It’s a Hummel classic. Hope you are satisfied! Really love your videos, Sir. Keep them coming. 👍
Living in Manchester, i have heard of Montrose for many years now, but have never actually got to see anything of the town until I came across your excellent video .... very entertaining, and you packed a fair bit in there ..... i'm a big football fan too, and your visit to the Montrose ground was a real bonus, well done!
Hey, thanks for letting us know you've moved out of Edinburgh BEFORE we go looking for you to shout us a drink (when we're over next)😉😅🍻 Seriously though, Montrose looks lovely and my cousin's (from Linlithgow) son, daughter in law and granddaughter have just moved to Montrose! Bet you're glad to be away from the festival madness right now, we lived in Auckland for almost 30 years, now in Invercargill and you couldn't pay us to live in a city again. Thanks for showing us around, I hope you're both very happy in your new home town 🏴😊☀️
Haha sorry Kelley! But we'll be back down that way, especially if YOU are buying US a drink :) I used to get the ferry to work in Auckland, but was always happy heading back to Devo!
I was stationed at the RAF base in Edzell, Scotland back in 1991-93 (U.S. Navy), so I occasionally travelled to Montrose to go to the great restaurant, "Roo's Leap". Great place and great food! Is it still there today?
Congratulations to you both no doubt you will have a better life and a lot more fresh air. It will be excellent and exciting exploring the montrose area. A lovely walking tour and thanks for showing us around Beth and Simon 🙋❤️👍
I was born in Montrose in the former CHARLETON MATERNITY HOME. I remember attending the Primary School by the Harbour and living above the Lochside Inn Pub, where my Grandfather was Publican, opposite the old distillery to the north exit of the town. Wonderful childhood memories. I last visited in 2014.
Steve, you have no idea how important t this vid was for my plans in Scotland. As you walked by Elephant Rock you also showed an old cemetery. The name If that site is The Chapel of St Skae. Skae is my surname. I became aware of that site since 1998 but never thought I’d visit it. I thought it was too remote. Your Montrose vid showed how accessible it really is. Just returned from Scotland 4/8 and left a wee bit of my Dad’s ashes on that gorgeous spot. Cheers!
Soup and sandwich for a fiver! 😮 That is incredible good value. A soup in a pub down my way in the south east averages six quid! Very enjoyable tour of your new home town. 👏👏👍😎
I really enjoy your videos! I’m a yank married to a Scot, I know, and travel all over Scotland. You have made it far easier and more informed for me. I owe you a pint.
Our summer gets to about 38 degrees, but that's in Cape Town, last week Durban was 44. Have recently started watching your videos and am enjoying your travels immensely.
From the great white north. (🇨🇦)😊. I live in St Catharines Ontario less than a 30 minute drive to Niagara Falls. On the 6th August the temperature was 39C with a humidex making it feel like 42C. Fortunately today it has dropped to 27C with no humidity. Beautiful town you are now living in, thank you for sharing.
Oh how exciting for you both - and wonderful for us too because you're going to be able to take us to lots of new places. Though I love Scotland dearly, it's mostly the west coast and the Hebrides whose geography I am familiar with - and I had no idea where Montrose was!! You are so lucky to be able to up sticks. It looks a great place, and you both look so happy. Alicja, I too couldn't hardly breathe outdoors when we had those ridiculous temperatures - the air was such poor quality, I didn't even want to be outside in the shade.
@@steve-marsh Hello Steve. A pleasure to watch your stuff as always. Looks like a nice place for you both to put down roots. Sue in her piece above mentioned the Hebrides. Whilst I remember a piece you did about flying to Barra, unless I am mistaken, I cannot remember anything else you've done about the islands. We are taking a trip up there next year and, as with a lot of Scotland, it looks rather spectacular. Love to see you cast a professional eye over the area. Best wishes and good luck
@@mick68 Click on SteeveMarsh's name to go to his channel, then Videos. You can look through where he has been in the West Coast, but it can be bad for the midge. If you are travelling between the isles, check the timetables of the ferries and be prepared to have an alternate plan, it only needs one ferry not to run. Mull is nice for a day visit, but I go via Fishnish - Lochaline ferry, it is narrow roads and involves two ferries. the Corran ferry just below Ft Willian is the first very short ferry, it is strange crossing it at night!! But if you don't like a bit of an adventure or driving on narrow roads, leave from Oban, but it is not so exciting. Make up your own route around the Islands, or just go right around the West Coast and across the top of Scotland and down the East Coast.
@@BoB4jjjjs Cheers Bob. Got 11 nights on the islands planned. Travelling South to North. Been on the west coast and over to the Inner Hebrides some years ago. The midges were sometimes a challenge. Going From Mallaig and back via Ullapool. Have registered with Calmac for early timetable notications. We'll be travelling in our car and going for walks every day. Travelled up the east coast and over to the Orkneys last year. Checked Steve's videos and I seem to be right about Barra being THE Outer Hebrides visit thusfar. We'll be visiting Barra and hopefully see something land at the beach airport. Enjoy your trips
I live in Florida. 25c would be a typical wintertime high here. Congratulations on your new town. I believe village life is superior to big city living. You can always hop a train for a weekend in the city if you miss it. Cheers!
I’ve been to Florida, and trust me when I say 25-30c Scottish heat is almost unbearable, whereas 40c in Florida is just about manageable 🤣 it’s very very strange
Hi Steve, We are fom Berlin on Holidays in Pitlochry. We follow your Videos and like them very very much. Four days bevor we visit beautiful Montrose, a great place to live. Thanks for your Videos and all the best. Christian and Julia
Congratulations on your new home guys! Montrose was a place we did not get on our travels but it looks lovely! Alecia looked like a little kid running on the beach! Will have to do a bit of research on the place looks like WW2 impacted it greatly, can’t imagine how terrifying to be living there then! Will have a Smithwicks in your honor tonight! ❤
Can’t wait for the “5 minute beach walk video” in 6 months to show the contrasting seasons, 60mph north easterly winds and horizontal snow. Good to see they’ve modernised the buses.
@@steve-marsh I look forward to seeing that video, maybe by then you’ll have progressed to laying on the board. That day it was 38c in north east England never known that hot ever.
I was curious about Montrose. Here in California we lived in a suburb of LA called Montrose. It was close to Glendale and Los Feliz by the Obsevatory snd Dodger stadium. It was a nice quiet little town. Up in the hills was Flintridge La Canada where Kevin Costner lived with his first wife Robin My sister babysat for his young kids back in 80s. Nice memories.
So you’ve escaped the city! Good for you both. Montrose looks like a bonny wee town. I’ve travelled past it many times on the train but never stopped to check it out. Think I need to put it on my must do list. Scotland’s East Coast tends to be ignored by many in favour of the West Coast and Highlands. It’s a stunning part of the country and deserves to be more widely known.
Hello again Steve, I'm now thoroughly enjoying your earlier videos, your new home town is a lovely looking place which makes me sad that I never got to experience it myself, I am Scottish settled in Australia many years now which is why I love your travels because I get to see so many places I missed seeing for myself.
Hi Steve, First of all welcome to Montrose and I'm sure you'll enjoy living here. I noticed a couple of things while watching your video that I thought I'd mention to you. While you were walking towards the Bamse statue just beside the shopping trolley you passed a brown bench shaped like the bow of a boat. That bench was fabricated and welded by myself and my boss and was made in memory of a local guy who worked at the harbour all his life until he sadly passed away. Also on top of the library building there is a weather vane which was refurbished by my myself and my boss back in 2019 I think it was as part of the library upgrade works. So it was good to watch your video and remind me of the history of this place. Maybe some day you should take a trip up Edzell way to a place called The Rocks of Solitude and then head into Glen Esk and have a walk to Loch Lee. The peace and quiet there is fantastic and excellent scenery too. There's so much I could tell you about Montrose as I'm sure plenty others can tell you too. Oh and I'm a born and bred Gable Endie so if I can help with anything just let me know.
I think there are 27 pubs in Montrose tried to do them all in one night don’t remember finishing Living in NY for the past 30 years but Montrose will always be home. Visit Mum regularly there
A toast to you both on your new home town 🥂. It's so pleasant to get away from a city and into a small seaside community especially with the tranquillity and space. Provided there is a chippy and a few pubs 👌👍😃. Look forward to more enjoyable tours from that area of the country. Enjoy it 😇
Great Move Steve, I’m originally from Stonehaven, folks living in nearby Johnshaven. So much to explore in and around Montrose. Ideally located for cities, beaches, and nearby Glens (Glen Esk and Glen Clova). I’m still finding little closes in Montrose even after all these years of walking around the town.
So true mate! Really loving it here and can't understand already why it's not better known as a town! I've driven up the A90 for years without ever making the diversion!
Montrose is where i grew up about a 15 minutes walk from the beach. I live in Fife now. Thank you so much for your video and good luck in your new life.
Good move for you both, I always loved spending time in this lovely town, always felt warm and at home there. I had two holidays in my youth at the camping site near the beach. Had a midnight swim in the old swimming pool back in ‘68 which you got a certificate for! Check out the lovely grave yard called something like “Sleepyhollow” just north of the basin at Tayock, there was a caravan site there which I stayed in way back and just happened to walk around the grave yard as a 16 year old. It obviously made an impression on me then - I’m not strange 😂😂 Cheers both 👍
@@steve-marsh Sleepyhillock is a fantastic wee place to visit. Just out the Brechin Road on the left at the very edge of town by the basin. I went to school in Montrose and stole my girlfriend from there. We now live in London but after watching your video there I think she’s wanting home for a visit. Maybe I can shout you and Alicja a pint if we’re up. We appreciate you making the good content. Keep up the good work 👍
Beautiful place,it does Scotland proud. Lovely beach arching it's way into the distance.old buildings crying out to be restored as a hotel os youth hostel,A steam train to bring the past back too life. So much potential and so beautiful aswell.
Nice video of Montrose, Steve! I was born there and lived there for most of my life, you passed the house in which I grew up in your walk to the beach. I emigrated to NZ but I managed to get back to Montrose on regular basis over the years, I’m now living in Speyside but I’ve not been in Montrose for a few years now so it was great to see your video, especially the areas round by the harbour. Montrose still has one of the best beaches (along with St. Cyrus and Lunan Bay of course) in Scotland. I’ve done a few UA-cam videos myself but nothing compared yours, I mainly concentrate on landscape photography (fergusbrucephotography). Anyway, nice work Steve, if I happen to bump into you in the Market Arms some day (or Paris, or Singapore, or New York, etc, etc…) I’ll but you a pint.
Also, the Royal Arch was used as a coffee house/meeting rooms by French Mariners in the 1800s, and gifted the plaque to Montrose to put above the facade. It has a lot of Masonic imagery and symbols on it, and is a listed monument. Was very recently restored to its former glory.
Hi Steve, Royal Arch is a branch of Freemasonry. Masons begin their masonic lives in straightforward Lodges and after a while, usually once they've done the first three degrees of Masonry, join a Royal Arch Lodge which has the next levels of degrees. There are several more after Royal Arch, such as Rose Croix and, the inimitable Knights Templar. The sign in Montrose probably sat above the entrance to the meeting place for the Royal Arch Lodge that met there. If there is a Royal Arch number on the sign, it would be possible to trace what happened to them. All Lodges have a name and number. The lower the number, the older the Lodge. I hope this helps explain it a bit for you. The black andd white squares denote the tiling of the floor found in all lodges. I can't see much more from your video.
I’m from Glasgow and my grandad owns a house in Montrose , came up every summer of my life, feel a close connection to the town and plan on moving one day. amazing video , really enjoyed it and also learned some stuff I didnt know 👌🏻 . Also I believe is very haunted 😱 place is steeped in history
Oh, what a lovely village! It's so good to begin a new adventure, in a new place. I am so happy for you both. I believe I would be living on the beach all summer. Do you remember the song, "Running in Circles"? I still play that a lot. Merry Ann from Minnesota
Hi guys, congrats on the move, looks like a beautiful & relaxing town, I’m assuming the move fits in with your jobs/ employment? Greetings from Adelaide, South Australia, we are having a cold winter averaging 12/13 at the moment, summer however averages in the mid to high 30’s and we normally get bursts of 40+ degree days. Loving your channel, found you this week after being in ISO, keep up the great work, Pete.
Thanks so much Pete! Yeah, we were fairly flexible with work so this move made a lot of sense and we're totally loving it! But I couldn't take your summer temps! :O
- Just some video ideas from one of your hardcore viewers -- Take us on a journey from your old neighborhood in the capital to your new place and share the differences. I can't wait to see the tours of the small towns you named and their harbors. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carson a dh’ fheumas tu a bhith a’ suathadh cho breagha sa tha Alba anns gach ràith aice? Steve - I did some Internet poking about Bamse and there is a Bamse trail through and in town and his grave is in the area to visit. He was quite the integrated mascot into his ship's affairs [the Thorodd]. A very remarkable friend and animal companion to his master's family and his ship's crew members.
@@steve-marsh glad to read work is flexible, you’re a natural in front of the camera & very easy to listen too & watch, did a trip back 9 years ago & you’ve covered off some of the spots I made it too, amongst my highlights were the Wallace Monument, Falkirk Wheel, exploring in & around Edinburgh plus seeing the family over in Troon, still lots I haven’t seen after leaving for Oz many years ago, cheers again
Tip about surfing you lay on your stomach when the wave comes and paddle then you crouch on ur knees then one foot out in front with the other knee on surfboard then stand up.
Montrose looks like a well kept town; I wish Ayr was as well kept. We have 'Space' in common with our hometowns now; good for lockdowns!!! I have only been to Montrose once, & that was only the train station because I had to change trains there. But I do remember looking at that huge Montrose Basin which I believe is associated with flocks of birds. Maybe you can film them when you walk around the basin sometime; I would be interested to see that. I am glad that you 2 are pleased with your new hometown.
Love your channel and especially this video! I lived in Montrose as a US sailor when I was stationed in the area from 1980 to 1983. The people of Montrose were very welcoming to the US military living in the area and I have very fond memories from my time there.
Just love Scotland - even though it is part of the UK it is still its own country, and should remain that way. You show it off to perfection. Great channel.
We've recently found your channel, absolutely love it and have subscribed. If we were fifty years younger we'd be doing all the tripping like you two do. So now we'll live vicariously thru your channe!. Walk on!
You're fast becoming our go to channel for uplifting viewing 👌👏and a fab source of insider knowledge about Scotland as we continue our search for a place to return to in the uk after some years living in rural France. Best wishes 😊
Bamse is buried near where you exited the beach by the harbour. I used to live in Montrose, in Ferry St. The castle was where the job centre now is (hence the crenalations) and it was there that Willaim Wallace was made Lord Protector of Scotland!
Yesterday was about 35 deg C with about 90% humidity. It’s been terribly hot in the last few days but it is summer. We live for the other three seasons. I’m on the Gold Coast in Queensland in Australia. Love your vlogs, keep them coming
The huts in the old picture you pointed out in the pub are actually changing room wagons for Victorian women. They could change and be carted down near the water where they could exit onto the beach without walking on display across the beach. How times have changed 😁
Steve and Alicja my wife and I love your videos. I believe we will be travelling to the Faroe islands because of your travels. Thank You for presenting your world in such a friendly way
I'll miss your inspirational videos for places to visit around Edinburgh but looking forward to seeing some new places i can visit in the campervan. Enjoy your new home!
I used to visit Dundee regulalrly on business in the 1990's and frequently visited Montrose for dinner. I have fond memories of the Chinese restaurant. There used to be an older bridge for the main road from the south - maybe it got updated when the big supermarket (starting with a "T") was built along with other new roads. I believe that Montrose High Street is the widest in Scotland, and there is also the wonderfully quaint air museum - been there twice - as well as the two statues alongside the river... plus the basin and wildlife reserve (been there too). Enjoy the town !
I'm from Edinburgh and my grandma was born and bred in Montrose, we took her ashes back to a very old cemetery there a few years back, think I've still got distant relatives there. Never really got a chance to look around so this was a fantastic tour. I've often thought of moving back up north but wouldn't move back to Edinburgh, maybe I'll have a look at Montrose ♥
Used to go to Montrose links caravan site when I was younger with my folks, loved it! Used to be a sit down cafe in the green pavilion and an amusement arcade just across the road before the road layout was changed up there. Good times! Thanks for the memories Steve!👍😊👏👏👏
My family from both sides are Montrosian. I grew up visuting it in the holidays. So many memories of that place imprinted on my soul You didnt mention the curfew bell and the many amazing closes. I also remember fighter jets roaring past and seeing chinooks flying overhead on the beach. I always picked up beach pebbles, but more recently found out that Montrose is famous for agates.
I live a few miles North of Montrose. It is a great bit of the country to live in. Lots of places to walk, cycle, swim. Never too busy. Never too hot. St Cyrus beach is close by and is my favourite beach. Montrose beach is good too.
You guys made the right choice, what a fantastic place to live, plus it looks like a good jumping off point for more adventures, I'm gonna cry with envy now!
Your girlfriend has a very nice disposition, always cheerful.
Doesn't she! I think everyone especially likes the videos with both these guys in!
Alicja makes this channel complete!

James.
So glad to bring you some very familiar places, that's what it's all about, thanks so much James!
Where were you born? Stracathro or Montorse?
@@NicholasEV1986 Charleton Maternity Hospital Sorry I should have been clearer
Stracathro Hospital is nearer Brechin. Charleton Maternity Hospital was just outside Montrose. No longer there now. I enjoyed this video too James!
Look after yourself.
Thanks so much for sharing!
I’m in Florida. Anything under 85f/29c is cool. Both air temp and water temperature. Love your videos!
my wife and i were looking for a place in scotland for our honeymoon. we stuck a pin in a map and luckily it chose montrose.. we stayed at the george hotel and had the most amazing week. would love to visit again sometime.
Hey Tom, thanks so much for sharing!
You're fair whetting out appetite there Mike! Cheers!
Thanks so much Tracey! All the best for getting here as soon as possible :)
After your visit, you'll be glad you did, if our experiences are any gauge.
I'm from LI too, stuck in Az.😢😢😢
Oh I love that train journey! Glad you've had the pleasure! :)
The Minesweeper statue is affectionately known locally as “The Mannie” (we actually have three of them, the very same statue, one by the beach, one in the high street and one by the harbour beside the Bamse Statue)
Ahhh cheers for this info!
Just moved to Montrose myself, and also from Edinburgh. Loving it so far!
Wow what a career! Well done Sir!
Aye it's a fantastic place for sure, we'll be back for many visits :)
Haha true! Cheers David!

Thanks so much for the tips :) Loads to discover in your awesome hometown :)
Beautiful town. Scots are so lucky honestly.
Ahh low humidity is a big bonus, would love to just feel 45! Just for 5 minutes!
Yep it’s 25 in Briz Vegas today - that’s quite cool…..

I was stationed at the RAF base in Edzell, Scotland back in 1991-93 (U.S. Navy), so I occasionally travelled to Montrose to go to the great restaurant, "Roo's Leap". Great place and great food! Is it still there today?

I was born in Montrose in the former CHARLETON MATERNITY HOME. I remember attending the Primary School by the Harbour and living above the Lochside Inn Pub, where my Grandfather was Publican, opposite the old distillery to the north exit of the town. Wonderful childhood memories. I last visited in 2014.
Awesome! Thanks for this Tom!
Steve, you have no idea how important t this vid was for my plans in Scotland. As you walked by Elephant Rock you also showed an old cemetery. The name
If that site is The Chapel of St Skae. Cheers!

Oh Sue we are so happy to be here it's true! Really love the place and feel so at home already.

I'd love to visit!
Hush don't tell everyone.
I agree!
Haha the secret is safe with me :D
Thanks so much for this Norrie!
I think there are 27 pubs in Montrose tried to do them all in one night don’t remember finishing Living in NY for the past 30 years but Montrose will always be home. Visit Mum regularly there
Haha good effort Mark (I'm sure you did finish btw) :)
A toast to you both on your new home town 🥂.
It's so pleasant to get away from a city and into a small seaside community especially with the tranquillity and space.
Provided there is a chippy and a few pubs 👌👍😃.
Look forward to more enjoyable tours from that area of the country.
Enjoy it 😇
Thanks so much from us both :)
I loved the Montrose Basin - only passed it on the train to Aberdeen, and would loved to have visited it.
It's just packed with birds, love it!
@@steve-marsh forgot to mention. You have a cracking locally owned cinema to check out (for those rainy days!) it used to be the swimming pool
I am living in Inverbervie having moved from Ormiston in East Lothian for work reasons. This area has a great mix of sea, hills, small towns.
My Grandad was from Johnshaven. I used to go to the fish festival every year love it up there
Montrose is where i grew up about a 15 minutes walk from the beach. I live in Fife now. Thank you so much for your video and good luck in your new life.
Thanks Carol from us both! Off to the beach now such a lovely day, have a good one too!
It obviously made an impression on me then - I’m not strange 😂😂

Thanks so much for this mate! I spent a couple of years in NZ, loved it! Need to go back sometime
That clip of Montrose FC is what football used to be. I used to watch Manchester United when it was like that. Warms my heart. Thank you
I’m from Glasgow and my grandad owns a house in Montrose , came up every summer of my life, feel a close connection to the town and plan on moving one day. amazing video , really enjoyed it and also learned some stuff I didnt know 👌🏻 . Also I believe is very haunted 😱 place is steeped in history

Similar to Albury, New South Wales, Australia.

Carson a dh’ fheumas tu a bhith a’ suathadh cho breagha sa tha Alba anns gach ràith aice? Tha farmad a’ togail a cheann grànda a-rithist! Fuirich sàbhailte agus fallain an dithis agaibh agus cùm iad a’ tighinn.
Why do you have to keep rubbing in how gorgeous Scotland is in all her seasons? Envy is rearing its ugly head again! Stay safe and healthy you two and keep them coming.
There's a love heart drawn on the beach there. I'm affirmative my friend drew that.
It is.
Alicja keeps going on at me about a walk around the basin :)
Both musuems are wondeful we loved Air museum
lots of history behind it. Many Thanks for sharing and showing this video.
Thanks so much for watching Harry!
such a nice couple
The huts in the old picture you pointed out in the pub are actually changing room wagons for Victorian women. They could change and be carted down near the water where they could exit onto the beach without walking on display across the beach. How times have changed 😁
Used to come to Montrose for school picnics when i was a kid , loved it❤.
I’ll still make trips down that way I promise :)
This place is a treasure , welcome home !
Thanks for watching Lynne! We're loving life in Montrose :)
Thanks for the vlog Steve: Montrose now on the bucket list! 😉
I moved to montrose 2 years ago and I love it! Hope you guys are still here and enjoying it 😊 x
Superb! Hi neighbour! Still loving it too!
