Basic? I’d be happy getting a 2005 Chrysler Sebring that hadn’t had its oil changed in 15,000 miles. My father had a 1972 dodge demon that didn’t have power windows or powered locks. Or a button to unlock the trunk, it only had a key. I wouldn’t consider that basic.
They had 8 special models of the Think working perfectly at the winter olympics in Lillyhammer (Lillehammer) in 1994. It was called PIVCO Citybee back then.
I was at the factory during production startup of the Thinks to support the local production engineers. At that time the Karma production line was halted due to economics (++), not sure if they actually ever came into any production numbers to speak of. They went out of business in 2012, after about the same numbers produced as the A306. The Boxter line was running at the time, but at half speed. Not sure if I would call it a fair comparison, but sure. Call it a downgrade if you like. Seems to me the Karmas had their issues as well...
That 'Think City' is the total boss......love it! Please do a range test, although, not sure you'll be able to do the sleep test, unless you open the rear hatch lol!
Data about this car: Manufactured by Valmet in Finland in 2010. 30 kW motor. Li-Ion battery from Enerdel. Could not find any information about capacity. Even though this car was not manufactured in Norway it's definitely a Norwegian car. It started way back in 1970's. Development and production was done in Norway until 2009. Ford did own the company for a few years, but sold it in 2002. In 2006 Think was owned by Norwegian entrepreneurs again. Later in 2006 a guy from California visted Think. He wanted to cooperate, but the Think team didn't have faith in his plans and turned the offer down. His name was Martin Eberhard. His company was Tesla.
That was probably the right call at the time, think was on a good track and tesla was not. But where think squandered what they had, tesla took huge strides forward
That reminds me of when Marcin, the Polish guy who drove with us to Bodø, came to Trondheim on a previous occasion - I told him I would meet him at the airport in an electric car with a five letter name, starting with a T. As he arrived, I pointed to the little red rental car and said "T-H-I-N-K". Explosive laughter. Anyway, he quite liked the idea of it after test driving it. :-)
Love the Pink Think :D Would love to see an upgrade every month, great idea! Also would love to see wifey's reaction, Ioniq was not good enough. Look what Bjørn brought home instead :D
I am grateful to the infinite graciousness of Marcusbil in allowing you to borrow such a fine vehicle for you to use, as long as you want! God bless him!
I love it! Remember the old days when EV driving was an adventure, this will be fun. I do think that it shows that in reality, for most drives, the most basic of cars is just fine. To the store or to work and back or to pick up and drop off a test car,. Especially during this pandemic, I have been driving so much less, my Tesla feels like overkill. 200 plus miles is just fine when you only go 30 miles at the most in a day.
This is the first video of yours with the exception of every banana box video I have wanted to give you multiple thumbs up. Great video. This is the car you need to buy :)
E mode has reduced power, use D mode ;) I used to have this one in 4 seater. Best city car ever!! It has abs and esp, ac... Drove 100k km in it. better range in cold winter than my model3 has now. Get some norwegian Think guru who built it and interview him with this car. Or visit elbilmek in Asker. Experts on this car.
Hey bjorn I recognise the think has internal door pulls and handles from a ford mondeo the clocks from a ford KA, the steering wheel/ indicator cluster, headlight switch & keys from a focus. Suppose theres nothing wrong with tried and tested parts at least you know they will work.
Brilliant! Used to have a Ligier Optima E with 15 kW motor. After I swapped the lead acid for Lithium batteries the car became a real sleeper at 400 kg or so :D
@Bjørn Nyland , which battery has this Think City? The Zebra NaNiCl battery or the lithium battery? The Zebra battery is very special by today's standards and needs continous use/charge in order not to be discharged/cooled (if it gets discharged/cools down, it is the end) and works at very high temperatures (240-350ºC if I remember correctly)
Top of my mind around 300W constant? Around 7 kWh pr day. But they did make it with lithium as well, 23 kWh i Think.. Could be that one he's got. The Sodium seems to be more common though.
@@Valsiphez Indeed! Yes, a lot has happened. I bought a Leaf in 2015, live in Trondheim and thought I "had" to get one from Oslo as cars normally are much cheaper there. Luckily I got one much closer. But I planned the route, it would almost be impossible to drive that stretch in that car solely on public chargers. Had to charge on schuko 2 times from very low SOC to 100%. Today, even winter, there are QC's and type2 so often it's no problem.
Oh my goodness. I was joking about a Fiat 500e. Wow this Think City is unique. I'm kinda glad you got something different to zip around for a short while.
Bj0rn, i can see your first 'camping' test in the think city . 10 minutes into the video car is outside in the hotel parking lot and I'm in a king bed inside the non smoking hotel room. Mission accomplished! ;>

It never complains at -30c, has lots of room, and drives like a tank in snow. My brother y his wife had a Think in Michigan and they were sorry to see it go when they went to Tesla. Why haul around extra battery when you don't need it.
By the way, this body design was by Ford back when it owned Think in 2001 or so. This is the fifth generation, Ford built about 1000 of the fourth generation and there are still quite a few on the roads in Norway (at least until recently). Tesla almost made the battery packs for Gen 5 Think but it fell through. Fourth Gen Thinks had flooded NiCad batteries and top speed around 90 kph with a range or maybe 80km if I recall, and was a contemporary of the GM EV1 (but the 4th Gen Thinks did not get crushed). The third generation saw only about 100 copies. Gen 2 might have seen ten copies. Gen 1 in 1990 looked like a senior project from an undergraduate engineering program around 1990.
And at least the glass is not cracked like the windscreen in the Mercedes EQV. lol. And much more practical for possibly 80% of most European car journeys. A modern iteration of this could cut urban congestion massively.

Why not buy one again? 😃
"I floor it, nothing happes"
while the car still accelerates faster than most cheap gas cars
I was impressed, it actually seemed quick.
Most likely would have been even quicker if it wasn't in ECONO mode.
@ it’s very light, I can tell you it seemed to accelerate faster than the leaf but I could be wrong.
16sec 0-60 for 43hp I’ve seen worse.
Talking about Fiat, you should definitely check out the new Fiat 500e
That looks like how everyone imagined electric cars before Tesla.
I'm driving an even older one now!! The Number starts with EL 123.. My banana box test in my Think is 14!!
Fun fact: Think City was made in my hometown called Uusikaupunki! After this car they made Fisker Karma. I think a little upgrade from Think :P
Actually a downgrade
And these days they are making Mercedes A and GLC, another downgrade? :D
They also made Porsche Boxter back in the day....
