I never thought the original Mario would have had so many interesting bits to it. It's such a simple game, I always figured there wouldn't be much there!
I think I've already said it before, but I'll say it again: thank you for not forcing humor into your videos. They are really pleasant to watch in the current format!
yeah it was the game i DEMANDED for my NES when I got it.. in 1993 or 4... and funcoland charged me 100 bucks for it. the NES I mean. I was most disappoint when game genie didn't work for it, didn't find out til later it was because of the mario bros duck hunt combo aspect
Maybe you had a faulty cartridge or something. I'd sit there all the time trying out weird game genie codes for super mario bros/duck hunt, though I really only played on the Super Mario Bros. side. with the Game Genie, there was a few codes in the book for Duck Hunt, but, I really was only interested in Super Mario Bros. It had tons of codes that worked for Super Mario Bros., I would just use the 6 digit codes and see what would happen, and then when they do, you can back and try a similar code and so on. I had a lot of fun with Super Mario Bros. 3 on the game genie as well.
there was another cartridge that had Mario, Duck Hunt, and a 3rd game that I cant remember. I think it was excite bike or something, but still, the one everyone had was the Mario/Duck Hunt one anyway
I always like how upbeat this series is. There's just a certain wondrous-ness to going outside the lines, and you tend to maintain a positive and sincere enjoyment of everything you come across. The fact that this ongoing series has gotten enough credit to get Prof. Oak's voice actor and some inside Punch-Out developer knowledge is really cool. Keep up the good work.
Loving this series! My first video was your Mario 64 stream around 5 months ago and your channel has grown so much since then! Everybody give this guy a sub and a like and tell ALL your friends! Keep doing what you do, Shesez!
Heeey, I'm actually on time this week! Man, I really like this intro for some reason. And this wasn't a game I was really -expecting- to see here.. but somehow, even the seemingly least-interesting games wind up being fun to watch here!
I usually never say this, even with channels I really like because I understand not everyone is into that type of videos. But I legitimately believe this channel should have over one million subscribers. Congrats, as always a great video.
Flacokra haha funny, the problem with my grammar was because: 1)English is not my first language 2)I was in hurry while writing this :/ You're being very smart and better than me by judging me as a person on my profile picture...
That pirhana plant one reminded me of those in Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It doesn't require cheats, glitches or the like to see. if you stand somewhat near a pipe with a pihana in it, so the pipe is cut off by the scoreboard, you can see the pirhana just slide up and down periodically.
Both SMB and Duck Hunt? nice, a double (duck) bill! In all seriousness, keep on keeping on dude; it makes my day whenever a new episode is uploaded (episode 60 already? wow).
I assume the reason Mario disappears before going into the end pipe of a water level is because the water is not the sky layer, but a background layer, and Mario goes behind the background when he goes "into" pipes.
One of the things I truly love about this series is how educational it can be. I watch every episode - even for games I don't care for - simply because of the insights into how games are designed and programmed. Particularly in this episode I thought it was fascinating that all the bonus areas are adjacent to one another on the same plane. There are other channels I watch that are focused on educational video game content and from those I understand the programming limitations of the NES, so it makes complete sense why the programmers did that, but it's still fun to see just how they did it. It reminds me of the Earthbound episode, actually. The funny part is, I'm starting to notice these tricks in other games I play, namely Runescape. One somewhat recent update to RS is a freecam mode for machinima but can be used to boundary break some areas which ties in with another update of being able to resize the minimap in the game HUD, which means being able to go to certain contained areas like dungeons or minigame lobbies and seeing other contained areas stored nearby on the minimap then using freecam mode to go take a peek at what those areas look like when inactive.
I love your channel so much. I used to 'boundary break' Unreal when I was a kid and I was always fascinated about the inner workings of video games we don't always see. Keep doing amazing work! ^_^
I definitely wouldn't mind revisited boundary breaks when new things have been discovered. I also really like it when you step into the technical details. Could even be more in-depth than it already is. Keep it up Shesez!
This was such an interesting video! Honestly, going into this episode, I really didn't know what to expect. But the platforms at the end of the level, the piranha plant fire ball sprite, and the block at the end of the castle were some of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. Really great stuff man!!
As a kid I tried jumpinkg over the flagpole so many times. I thought there would be amazing unseen lands behind it. When I saw in all those youtube video's there was nothing my childhood died. but now.. now my childhood lives again after seeing this video, thank you.
I really appreciate how hard he tryed to make a 10 min long video. i feel like the average youtuber would just do a 4 minute mario bros episode and call it good. but no, he goes above and beyond to make his fanbase happy and i think thats why he's growing so fast. He also makes me feel young again when most youtubers were that honest
Spinosaurusking875 He's done a few really good 2D games. my personal favorite is the Chrono Trigger episode, you should check it out if you want more 2D Boundary Breaks
I wonder... the NES games are short cause of memory limitations on both the NES and the cartridge,so how the heck did they put two NES ROMs in one NES cartridge?
>Looks at Final Fantasy. Yeah... Short... Seriously though the NES cart was mostly empty, hell the famicom cart which was actually the size of the game circuit board had enough room for them to shove sound chips and all manner of extra hardware onto the board. adding another small game rom chip and a control chip to let the cartridge switch between the memory chip it was showing to the console was probably trivial engineering wise, but it would have cost a bunch if they'd wanted to stick two big games onto the cartridge.
This was the first console/color game I ever played. After growing up playing Tex Adventures & math games on a Mac 128k, it blew my mind. Gotta say, I really wasn't expecting you to find ANYTHING for Duck Hunt/Clay Shoot.
Could you do an episode on Star Wars: Republic Commando? There's pretty much a camera option packed in! All you would need to do is open the console with "~", type "ghost", then enter! I can even give you my Steam login if you needed it. I would make the video myself, but it wouldn't be as cool :P Plus, this series doesn't have a Star Wars episode yet!
You should never give important info like your Steam login to other people, even youtubers, because you don't know what could happen with that info and what they could do with it.
The stuff like the Piranha Plant being passed up by Mario, and Mario stopping in the transition pipe just as he gets offscreen kinda reminds me of a movie being filmed, where the actors wait for their cue and stuff like that.
Shesez, you make Mario break more then just blocks, you make him break BOUNDARIES!! Love your show by the way, it's so cool to see things in games we love that were always hidden away from us!! Keep on striving dude! :)
One time I see YT had unsubed me to all the channels that I subed, and even when sub back, it help me to unsub back the channel, I have no idea, and later fixed idk why too
The reason that Piranha plant stays put when Mario is near the pipe is because the Mario mask (mario's shadow object to collide with enemies and the ground) is activating the piranha to stay put so that it can jump out right after you pass it. It's a part of the objects programming for it to stay put and shoot out right after Mario leaves its boundary, which is why every single pipe in this game does the same thing. I used to make Mario games like 10 years ago and learned a lot about the actions and collision variables. It's also interesting to note that the Mario mask doesn't cover the entire sprite of Mario, which is why you can evade enemies by barely jumping over them and can basically touch them when standing on the edges of the pipes and not die.
Hey man, these videos are super awesome! I also really like how almost every thumbnail has the main character facing diagonally (I hope that's the right term). Keep up the great work!
6:07 Funny story. I kinda already knew about this part, because many years ago, I played this game at a cousin's house, but the game was acting glitchy, so pipes ended up being see-through. When Mario would go into the horizontal pipes, we'd joke that Mario was entering a phone booth to make a phone call, because that's what it looked like to us.
ahhhhh, another quality episode, it's always interesting when you do games like this! Also, think you can do Sonic Unleashed? It's pretty huge and has so pretty cool environments!
The dog is switching to the duck palette on the final frame before he disappears. Can't really tell you much more about it than that. You can't do much boundary breaking in NES games unless you start to count breaking the boundaries of programming, going into stuff like objects loaded into the game or hidden on the screen, or bits of code used and unused. that's a topic for a whole other channel, I think.
The reason Toad is a sprite and not a background even though he can't move or do anything, is twofold: because the background tile set is full and the only room for Toad's graphics are in the sprite tile set (they are separate on the NES), and because the colors for toad are stored in the sprite palette (for the same reason as the graphics - limited memory)
The glitchy background comes when the page number overflows and becomes negative. Also notice that Bowser's palette is different if you remove the axe. Bowser's proper palette is only loaded when the axe is loaded.
I never thought the original Mario would have had so many interesting bits to it. It's such a simple game, I always figured there wouldn't be much there!

Man, I forgot that Princess Peach is smaller than Mario. At least in this game.
Obviously Koopa was smackin' her around til she shrank down. Needs a super mushroom, the poor thing.
the reason for that is that small mario was originally normal mario, and getting a "super" mushroom turned into "super mario" and growing in size

It's not difficult. Notice how small the PCB is. 133fsb.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/dscn0504.jpg

4:48 omg, finally. there are no youtube videos doing that and I really wanted to know!
