I think the last tory who resigned as a matter of honour was Lord Carrington over the Falklands, even though Margaret Thatcher said he did not need to. Interestingly the then defence minister John Nott also offered his resignation but when Margaret Thatcher also told him he did not have to did not resign. Apparently he was fine with living in abject humiliation as long as he kept his job.

Yeah. That's the difference between those with wealth and power and those without. We've been informed it was a joke. Thus, the media reported it as a joke. The government accepted it was a joke. The police however should have said, 'Did that guy just say he was drugging his wife? We need to do our jobs and investigate that'. If a member of the public blurted that out in front of a crowd of people the police would follow up. They'd send an officer round to the address and knock on the door in front of all their neighbours to check that the wife was indeed alright. Cleverly avoided that humiliation because he said it's a joke so the country has to take him at his word because he's James Cleverly.

I said this on twitter the day after it was reported, a few people agreed he should of been sacked.
But in the main the story as been dropped, Richard Madley brought it up on GMB this morning, and he pretty much said he had apologised for saying it and that was the end of the matter.
    Which is totally unacceptable.

On the issue of Pints of Wine; I notice that the MP for the 18th Century has vocally come out in support of returning to "Imperial" measures because the USA uses them.
Perhaps someone should tell him that U.S measures may SEEM "Imperial" but U.K (Imperial) measures changed in 1824 (after his time) whilst the U.S system maintained the old British 18th Century measures and so a British Pint isn't the same as a U.S Pint.
The U.S Pint is 473.18 ml apposed to the "Imperial" Pint at 568.26 ml. That's because an "Imperial" Pint is 20 fluid oz, the U.S Pint is only 16 fluid oz. Worse than that, though, even the volume of a fluid oz is different with the "Imperial" version being larger by over 1 ml.

I listened to Cleverly (if ever a name was ironic…!?!) being interviewed on Radio 4 yesterday morning. He actually said, by way of mitigation (?), out loud and on air, that he had always taken issues of violence against women and girls very seriously and had fought for them all his political career. Surely, if that is truly the case, his “joke” is even more shocking and egregious?
