    Great video Dai. Does it matter what kind of wood you use? Are some woods easier to carve than others? Or can you recommend a wood that looks best? Diolch yn fawr 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

      Hi Will, great to hear from you delighted to hear that you like the video. Alot use Flowering Lime (basswood) especially when starting with woodcarving/spoon carving. Ourselves, we use a wide variety of different hardwoods to work in. Including Oak, Ash, Mahogany, Teak, Fruit wood, Walnut, Hazel, Beech, Maple, Sycamore, Yew and Laburnum. We get a lot of wood from old furniture, fixtures and fittings that are unwanted by others. Certain woods certainly carve better than others. Lime is easy carving, Teak is great to carve, despite its reputation for being tough. Mahogany works well, as do Oak, Walnut, Sycamore, fruit wood and Beech. It comes down to personal preference and what suits you best. Things like whether you are heavier or lighter handed. In terms of the look of the wood, it depends on your preference for dark or light wood. Personally I love woods that have an interesting grain,Yew and Laburnum being great examples but they can also be challenging to work with.
      Hope that gives a little insight into the wood that we work with. Thanks for supporting our UA-cam channel. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, great to hear from you. Glad you enjoyed the video. If you are starting out Flowering Lime (Basswood) is the most popular choice. Having said that we use a wide variety of different hardwoods including Oak, Mahogany, Teak, fruit wood, Ash and Sycamore. We reclaim our wood from old furniture so it's great to recycle it.
      You could start out with Flowering Lime and see how you get on and then try others to see if you prefer them.
      Hope that helps, thanks for getting in touch. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

    Going to make one for my girlfriend from Sweden and your guide really helps. What are the U-shaped chisel things that you use for making the petals called?

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  4 роки тому +1

      Definitely worth having a go at handcarving your own. It is such a lovely process and so much more personal if you have made it yourself. The tools you refer to are often called woodcarving chisels. Their actually more of a gouge and we sometimes refer to them as fingernail gouges due to the shape.
      If you are looking to but some you can look for companies like Sorby, Ashley Isles or Henry Taylor all good gouges to get started with. You can also find some beautiful vintage gouges on Ebay by sea for woodcarving chisels.
      Hope you enjoy making your own lovespoons it really is a lovely process and has such meaning if you make it yourself.

    For those of us who are uh.... Less than accurate with scroll sawing, what's a good way to rememdy the shape? I find that in chasing the shape with my gouge on the outside of the spoon I am ruining the shape. Would a wood rasp be an option? Thank you!

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  Рік тому +1

      Try all sorts, a belt sander can help to shape, as can files and a rasp. Coping saw is another option as well as using different gouges too. We make use of the band saw too. Plenty of time developing on the scroll saw is also another option. We use a Hegner Multicut 2s and a Niqua Speed number 9 reverse tooth blade. It's a great combination and it produces some pretty accurate results.
      Thanks again for supporting our UA-cam channel. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

      @@DailovespoonsThomas thank you! Would you say its easier to start with a coping saw or scroll saw for the types of projects on your channel. I know that the scroll saw is faster, but my question is more around the skill required for accurate cutting. I keep bouncing back and forth on whether to get blades for the scroll saw or to buy a coping saw.

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  Рік тому +1

      Scroll saw all the way. It's a corner stone of what we do here at our family workshop and without it I don't think we could compete with the cheap imports and mass production. The sooner you can get to grips with the scroll saw the better your chances of being successful. 👍👍

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, we use a hegner scroll saw to cut out a basic outline for the lovespoons we sell here at our family workshop. Then after all the lovespoons are handcarved and hand finished. I used a coping saw in this video to demonstrate how you can start with basic and inexpensive tools. Hope you enjoyed the video.
