Whittling A Bird From A Tree Branch (4K)

- I am taking a branch from a Lime Tree and whittling a little blue tit bird, using an axe, saw and a couple of knives. In the first half of the video I explain all the steps of how to whittle a bird, and then in the second half I whittle another bird from start to finish with no voice over.
Whittling is a very peaceful activity and you do not need much equipment, so it is easy to pick up a bit of wood and to whittle to your hearts content. I hope you enjoy the video, which is also viewable in 4K if you want to watch it on a television. - Навчання та стиль
nothing more soothing than the sound of a sharp knife cutting thought green wood. the chirping of birds in the background also helps.
That was an excellent carving class! Thanks so much!
Thanks for your video Harry. Very nice basic instruction to lead anyone into carving/whittling. Cheers from USA.
im just starting to whittle, and i think my first little project will be a birdie as well. amazing video and your energy is very soothing! ❤️
awww I love birds! so sweet!!! 🦉🐧🦩🦢💕
As someone who is just delving into whittling, I really enjoyed this video!
Thanks
I hadn't thought about it previously, but even if one seldom nicks themselves whittling, the gloves can serve the secondary function of helping prevent blisters, either from the spine or handle of the knife, or from hotspots on the workpiece itself.
I am very new in whittling and I am looking for small projects to do and be able to grow in confidence and skills in whittling. Thank you so much for sharing this video. Thank you so much for your pleasant approach in introducing this specific project, Blessings 😊
I love carving. The first item I did was of a civil war soldier with detachable musket and everything. It came out pretty good.
Thanks Harry,
Love it. Very relaxing and a true gent
Great video Harry, I got my knife out and a spoon I had been working on and whittled along side you. I've never done whittling with any one else before. It was very relaxing. Thanks for your efforts.
That's great Derek. If you are in the UK, you may know of them already, but the Bodgers.org.uk do quite a bit of spoon carving in local meet ups.
Thanks Harry I'll check them out.
Great video.
I have a blue tick, but mine is a bird dog.
9:14 I have those exact gloves and I was a little skeptical at first so I tested them - even with the glove lying on a solid surface and slashing across it with some weight behind it they still don't cut, but like you say they will probably offer little to no protection against a stab. Overall I was pretty impressed with the cut resistance, it's definitely one of the best choices to protect your hands
That was very enjoyable Harry. Looking forward to seeing the next video. I may have a new hobby. Thanks for sharing. Davin
Thanks Davin
Thanks Harry, this came at the perfect time since I'm looking to give this a go myself. Congrats on 100k by the way!
Thanks Jeff.
Nice project to whittle away at. Loved hearing the birds chirping in the back ground. Well deserved on the 100K subscribers also.
Thanks James.
You had company of bird's spring choir as you worked outdoors. Sounded as there may have been a crow possibly alerting to the cat. Crows and jays get raucous when cats and snakes are about. A very pleasant and informative video. Thanks for sharing
Yes they are very lively at the moment.
Thank you for this video! I enjoy carving morel mushrooms just like this, but want to try birds. Imagine a bookshelf with many of these birds, different types of wood! I want to find those gloves as well!
Thanks and just look for 'cut proof' gloves on Amazon etc.
Excellent work Harry! Very informative. Thank you for sharing. Just a side note, I use the protective tape over the glove on the thumb, index and middle fingers of the hand that I hold the carving in. This gives an added benefit of better grip on the project In addition to extra protection for those fingers.
That sounds smart thanks Tim.
Another alternative to an axe that I like to use, is a Khukuri knife. Works a bit like an axe, but a lot more control on smaller pieces of wood 🤙
Another tip for better grip on smaller pieces of wood, is to use a piece of bike inner tube as a grippy pad. I use them a lot for knapping too, stops me from dropping all my arrowheads 🤣
“I’ve seen a lot of blue tits around here.” is now my favorite UA-cam quote. Harry why don’t you give us a list of what you can’t do so we can eliminate you as a source for some arcane craft. Ought to be easy as the list must be very short.
👍😃
Congratulations on 100k! Well deserved. I lobe whittling. I like the second knife you used. Any idea where I could find a similar one?
Hi it was Proops knife...they sold off sets very cheaply many years ago, but I notice them coming up on the web, I think they are made in Sheffield by a company beginning with a b, so perhaps a Google.
@@harryrogers will do, thanks.
What type of wood are you using, it looks very close grained.
It's lime wood.
saw a show on the albatross that would be a workout
Haha need a big branch for that!
For the safety of your legs, you could wear a leather apron or a pair of leather chaps, The type of farrier would wear to shoe horses with
Yes that is good advice thanks Stuart.
