Carving a Love Spoon. Love Spoons date back before the 17th century and were given to a girl you wanted to date. Traditionally they were carved with symbols of love.
Hi, just stumbled across this video, really enjoyed it :) I'm Welsh, I'm from South Wales, It made me extremely happy to see the respect you had given to our traditions in this carving. Love spoons and Celtic crosses mean a whole lot to our culture than people realise. It's a shame that many people outside of Europe, and sometimes people even in Britain believe Wales is "part of England" which adds a lot of insult to injury considering we occupied Britain before the English. They carried out the same process of elimination to us when they invaded as Anglo Saxons, as they did to the Native Americans. I apologise for my rambling. Us Welsh are very patriotic. Rydw i'n caru Cymru. :)
That is a beautiful job. Interesting to me is that many towns have Linden as a street name, but craftsman use the name basswood, at least in east US. I might have been 50 before I knew it was the same species. Thanks so much for the video!
Amazing, informative, and old school. I learn tons from this video alone and I've be doing simply spoons about a year now. So I've tried to soak up as much knowledge as I can lol
Hi Joe and thanks for this great video. May I ask how thick your piece of basswood is for this project? I am using lime by the way. Cheers from down-under.

Best video on spoon carving I have seen yet ! Thank you !!
Thanks for your videos, I have just started trying to learn traditional hand carving and you have been a great help.
I like your clear understandable narration, and the ease in which you carve. thank you.
Loved it all. The suggestion to put the computer on pause to trace a pattern was outstanding. Thumbs up again!
Very nice video, Joe. Clear, instructive, and informative. Many thanks for sharing your expertise!

Thanks for your kind words. It is a full one inch thick (25 mm). Basswood, lime and linden are basically the same species.
Looks like that pinky got a lil bit too close on one of your previous spoons😉
Dont you have any printer, sir?
Beautiful work, interesting vid, sir !
How do you sharp your gouges ?

how long did it take to make?
Maybe an hour? Basswood is soft so it carves easy. Roughing it with saws took most of the wood away leaving just enough to enjoy carving the rest.
that is so cool 😎😎😎
