Right now where we/I am the Temp is about -30°F / Windchill's factor almost 45°F and we/I don't see any Teslas around us driving... Based on reports the Range of Battery would cut down to 40% of the Original 90% and in some instances; The Teslas could not even start... Don't even think of getting out of the ❄ ❄ easily with Teslas where we live.
Cheers,,
Happy New Year 2024.
I live in Minnesota and have a 2022 Model Y long range dual motor. The car works very well in the winter. Cabin heats up faster than any ICE car I have driven, even at minus 22 degrees. While the cold reduces my range, nightly charging at home makes the issue moot. Traction is exceptional. My favorite feature is the scheduled departure time so the car is warm and ready when I leave work or home.
Cool. I am about to move to Des Moines from Phoenix and was wondering. Thank You.
@@Big.Ron1 Coolest feature of the Tesla is scheduled departure times. Warms the cabin up so it is ready when I leave to work or come home. Love that!
Do you have 2 sets of tires one for winter?
I do not have winter tires. The all season tires that came on my Model Y have good traction in the snow and ice.
@@marksloan5443 cool, thanks for the info. I’m in co and have heard a lot of people say you need chains or a second set of tires
6:27 - almost spat out my drink 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaah
Enjoyed the video. I can tell you put a lot of hard work into this.
Wasn’t easy haha. Supposed to be vacation but had fun
Thanks so much for your GREAT videos! I hope you had an AMAZING time at your Tahoe cabin! SO FUN!
Love your channel. Keep
It up!
Thanks John!
Good info. Thanks!!
Chris, you're killing it with your content 👏 i love it! Keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks so much Mike! Anything you wanna see?
Great video. Extra kudos on the Odesza track playing. Die hard Odesza fan over here 😁
Hahaha nice! Love them! Thank you Alex! Hopefully you subscribed! :)
@@EverydayChris sure did!
Very snowy and cold winter here this year in Northern Utah. The garage, preconditioning and snow tires are worth A LOT!
Do you still need tire chains when you have snow tires?
Same in Colorado Mountains. So many reviews with all season and no mention of preconditioning.
Nice notes on winter driving. Remember the Tesla parking brake is *only* on the rear wheels even for AWD! Good idea to put socks or chains on rear wheels parked on icy slope, esp. when plugged in, don't want to rip the charger out sliding downhill!
Or just use winter tires. Chains / socks are unecessary if you use proper tires.
Also!!!! If it’s too cold to warm as your driving then navigate towards a charging station but not actually go, it will pre condition as you drive and warm up the battery to improve regenerative braking.
Yes!!!!!
Even if the charging stations aren't working like in the news recently you can carry a generator in the cyber truck just like having spare gas for ICE.
Great informative video Chris. You didn’t take the Turquoise X? What was your range reduce too? We planning to get another Model H which will be parked outside in frigid weather in the NJ/NY area. What do you recommend?
Haha it was too new! Going to take it though camping in the x. Range reduction not bad if parked and plugged in!
Great video. Would love for you to post your workout/fitness routine and related info as well!
Haha will do
Love that door unlatch feature. When I was first researching Model 3, I was seeing stuff about frozen handles and it made me nervous even though I have pretty short parts of Winter that are bad enough to worry about that. Still don't have an M3, hopefully soon, but good to know this feature! I am going to try for a reasonably priced M3LR, though, just to be sure I can get that AWD. Better safe than sorry, plus it means more range (and fog lights and better sound system?).
yes definitely get the LR. When i got my m3 their LR was on backorder or something so i ended up getting RWD. Trying out this first winter and see how it goes, LR still a better choice imo
@@HcutiegirlY If you happen to remember to check back, I'd be curious how it goes for you.
I'm probably not getting a Tesla until February, realistically. Have to own my car until mid-January since I took the state rebate check on it. (Kinda hoping the state rebate comes back in time for my next car...or a massive windfall, which isn't likely.)
Awesome video!
Yayy
Hey what’s up Chris! Good video bro.
What’s good !
Any advice for snow chains!? I have the 20 inch rims on my model y and don’t want to scratch them up. I don’t think the snow will be as much as the video. But I want to prepared just in case.
Nice vid! I wasn't sure if you had snow chains on rear tires... or is it necessary?
Is there a heat line on door handle?
I'm happy with my 4×4 diesel pickup truck that gets me to and from.
Great video. Did you have to get chains and what tires do you have?
Video coming today in like 10 min!
You're in Tahoe.. there's like 3 superchargers next to you lol.. you'll be plenty fine even with super cold temps.
my #1 tesla tip in really cold weather-- tell it to precondition the batttery, otherwise you will have no regen, which is really annoying on downhill bits....
Great content now I feel more confident having a Tesla in cold environment now I know what to do. Keeping it 💯
Great information!
What’s that cover on your tires?
Did you install chains?
Video coming in like 3 days! It’s two types of auto socks
@@EverydayChris thanks brother!!!!!!
Tire socks
Lake Tahoe is not bad. Go to Fargo, ND and see how Tesla works
Nice video. I do lots of off-roading and it’s actually better to have lower PSI in your tires for snow. I air my tires down to about 12 PSI for snow off road. The traction is a lot better. On the highways having around 30-34 PSI is better than 34-42
I thought that too until I read it’s better to have more air lol I was confused
Less air = more rolling resistance and less range
I think worrying about the cold is a little bit over done here. I live in Massachusetts and do not have a garage. I charge outside all the time in the winter. Is there some reduction in battery? Sure… But 50%? Definitely not! The car takes longer to warm up and for regenerative braking to work but besides that I haven’t really noticed any problems with the temperature below zero.
Good to know. Thanks jay!
Only 1% of cars, even in Democrat NYC are EVs. Here in Democrat Minnesota, multi- hundred residential units are being built with no place to re-charge. What do a couple in an apartment do if they both have EVs? Do they both recharge in Walmart's parking lot till midnight in -25F weather?
No need for snow tire chains?
How can you charge it when the car charger light turns orange?
Notice you dont have front license plate? Isn’t that illegal in California? Are you going to get one? Which is best frame to get?
I live in Western Canada, where winter temperatures can drop to -30 C and stay like that for a while. I feel PHEV is a better option for the weather here.
For daily driving and charging at home with a level 2 charger is just fine. Plenty of people in Canada and Norway do just fine.
People in Norway are just fine. PHEV is waste of money.
Haven't seen it yet but I'm already late for work. PLS help! What should I do now?????😢
Thanks for all the pointers! My biggest question is which AirBnB is that?... it's beautiful!
We wanted to go back again. I think they took it down but it’s ok vrbo!!
@@EverydayChris Bummer! You're content is great, thanks so much!
It snows maybe once per 5 years where I live. When it does snow, it doesn’t stick to the ground. I’m too lazy to live where it snows lol
Wow!
Thank you for all the tips. Where can I find the button to push when the door handles are frozen? I don’t find it on the phone screen.
Doing a video to help you! You have to hold the quick icons to customize it!
@@EverydayChris thanks Chris.
Is the door unlatch mode only for model Y? I have new model 3 and don’t see that option on my app, appears to up to date on over the air updates.
Should be there you have to go to customize by holding the most used apps down
Interesting. Currently I have a 2017 Subaru Forester which has 8.7 inches of ground clearance which is about as good as it gets going through the snow. It has no door handles to freeze or frameless door seals to rip out with frozen windows. But the Tesla certainly has big advantages such as preheating while inside a closed garage. And there is no motor to turn over and warm up when it 23 below zero.
You can't go wrong with a Subaru in the winter. Keep it until it dies.
Here in Utah I go to work lots of snow and very cold days high 20s I go to work and for sitting out in the cold for a whole day of work (9 hrs) it only drops like 2 - 4 percent literally as much it takes me to get to work 10 to 12 miles not a big issue at all
Nice!
All my friends ds in Scandinavia where most people have a Tesla y-/ no issues especially in snaiw
How about an appropriately sized battery blanket on an old fashioned cord to AC when car parked for a while
How would these tips and tricks work if you're out of cell range in mountains during a power outtage?
Use a generator. You're far away from other people so the noise won't bother the neighbors. Plus snow absorbs sound
Hey Chris, is your car lowered at all? If so wondering why besides aesthetics? Thanks
Nope! Stock!
I am thinking of buying a Tesla, but I am driving a lot through mountains during the winter and i was wondering if there is a way to save all the changes in the menu for like a winter setting. Like you press 1 button and it changes everything to what you have created as a winter settings?
I don't own a Tesla (yet) so I can't test this idea, but what if you made a second fake profile and named it "Winter" or something and you used that? I don't know if the profiles are only saving seat/window positions or also saving all your settings, and I also don't know how easy it is for you to swap between them. Curious to know if there's an answer to this one, so I thought I'd comment my idea.
20° F (-6.5° C) is not cold. What is the relative humidity ? Try something closer to -10 F or -20 F (-23° C / -30° C)
What are those covers on your tires? Do they act as chains? I’d like to purchase them if they do
Look for tire socks
You really should take the effort to clean all the snow off your car, including the roof. It may not impact you, but it could affect other drivers behind you.
But I’m Canadian, so we try to be considerate of others (usually)
This sounds like a lot of headache to deal with
The last thing I want to do when I'm on vacation is "calculate all my charging stops." If you have an accident and are trapped in that how long do you have until the batteries are empty and you are in a life threatening situation? An ICE car will idle for 48+ hours with a full tank of gas and keep you warm the whole time. This was a legitimate concern in my area not too far back due to a highway closure. Locals were bringing supplies to those stranded on the highway with snowmobiles.
An EV will easily idle for at least as long as that on a full battery.
Where do you get this made up fear from? Why do you not do any research?
Wow, freezing cold and three feet of snow, so he walks out with swimming trunks! Something is wrong with this man. Oh, I know, he suffers with a Tesla!
i am having situation where i can't park and charge nightly yet, do you think my m3 will be ok and see the light when summer comes? Should i charge daily to 80% after a drive to work (my work has free charging). Or charge up to 100% once a week. Sorry for so many questions as i'm a new Tesla owner and the battery charge limit reduction due to the cold is already concerning
I say 80!
As long as your work doesn't have too many EVs trying to use power. You can always use a gas powered generator in a pinch.
That would be my concern, range anxiety. If I had plenty of range for daily trips then home charge outside the garage would be fine.
Dont listen to these advice. Dont set chill mode since it only delays the reaction and comfort mode steering will give more jerky steering that you do not want in snow. Also do not overinflate the tyres as it will reduce grip. Inflate them att the current temperarure but not over recomended values.
Make the snow blower electric!!
smelled so bad of gas
Saskatchewan....minus 35f. Try that
Does the battery heater run on the batteries?
Yes.
Hey guys! LOTS of comments on whether to OVER inflate or UNDER inflate tires in snow. I was in the same boat. I thought UNDER inflating gives better traction in the snow and more control. However, every google search proves that you SHOULD keep tires Inflated or slightly OVER inflated due to the cold weather. Biggest is rolling resistance which will decrease your range in your Tesla like crazy. What do you guys think? Trust experience or all the articles on google? haha. When in doubt, double socks on all tires.. and stay safe!
In normal cold conditions on roads you should slightly overinflat it because it doesn`t warm up and inflat as much as in summer. But if you`re stuck in snow(or sand) you should under inflate it for more grip. But you shouldn`t drive like that regularly
I believe proper snow tires is the answer inflated to manufacturers' specs. Everything else can range from gimmicks, inefficient solutions, dangerous to stupidly dangerous in the mountains.
9f or -12 celsius as shown by the car isn't really the "winter" that I'm worried about. Once you hit the -20s and 30s then I'll listen.
Aren't there Tesla videos of people in the Nordic region covering this sort of thing? I recall it being about the same, just more exaggerated.
You set everything to max safety. I switch off every electronic nanny und my Ioniq 5 RWD to slide around in the snow. We are not the same.
35 degrees isn't cold, try -25. I know someone that has one and he hates it and regrets buying it cause they're no good in -10 and colder. The cold and kills the batteries in no time and takes forever to charge
I know someone who has the same problem, he hates his Microwave Tesla, he wished he never bought it. To expensive to fix and not reliable at all.
You must follow the cult. You aren’t allowed to speak ill of an EV. 😂
Too complicated evs. Stick to ice vehicles and life stays simple.
35 degrees above 0 is not bad. What does it do when it is 45 below 0 ?
Check out some of the news stories about recent reports of EV issues. Don't forget to subscribe!
Real nice Tesla commercial, Elon completely approves. 😊😊😊😊
Sounds like if you dont have a charger at home in an area thats 15 degrees for over a month every winter you are screwed.and if your area loses power 3 or 4 times a year for 3 days or more then you are screwed again.
Just get a gas powered generator
Good video. (Lot’s of EV haters in the comments though)
Most of these problems are the same with ice and EVs. Ice vehicles lose about 15-20% efficiency plus you will have problems with frozen doors and engine not even being able to start because of frozen fluids. At least with an ev you can start it. Door handles easy get a hair dryer or my friend uses a torch lighter but be careful with that one.
Lol what frozen fluids?
I do not need to change drive mode in my car, because i have a Volvo, and they have fitted the car with computers, that handle stuff for me. So during winter and slippery, it just work. Living in Sweden so, yes, i have a lot experience of slippery conditions.
You forgot to mention the windows that can also freeze and this makes it even more difficult to get into your car since the window must go down a little bit to open the door without damaging anything.
So awesome! Good tip!
I live in Maine, just north of Portland. We own a 2022 Audi 55 Sportback Quantro. Audi has temperature mitigation system in the battery pack that prevents overheating and freezing. Summertime range has been up to 255 miles and have only seen a drop to 220 miles this winter. Have been quite happy with Audi after having own 3 previous ones. Tesla is a te technology company building cars where Audi is a longstanding car company with advanced technology. They won pikes peak over a decade ago with an all electric vehicle.
I’d say Tesla is more for people who like technology
Advanced technology! Really! So aren’t you being a bit biased here?
@@theodorehaskins3756 Audi were building EV' well over a decade ago, not being biased, just honest. Have toured the Audi/ Porsche production facilty in Germany.
@@johnwinslow4503 So that makes you an authority on advanced technology?
@@johnwinslow4503 So how many of these advanced technologically equipped Audi vehicles were sold last year?
Just drove a 2020 Tesla model 3 standard range model, 200 miles 100% fully charged. Driving from Irvine CA to LV, about 280 miles, to attend CES 2024; with not that cold weather, 50°F and windy, speed between 75-85 mph, I had to supercharge my Tesla 3 times at Victorville, Baker and Primm. Took 5 hours or so before checking in my hotel. On the way back, supercharged at Baker and Victorville before back in Irvine. My thought after this trip, cold temperature and driving speed really affect the range of a EV.
200 miles? Hmm. I fill up my car in Irvine, drive to Vegas, top gas up there, 5 minutes while I pee and get new coffee. See the show. Drive home. Another 5 minutes to top up the gas. 3 hours each way. Cold weather improves my range, car loves it. BEV is not ready for prime time. Great for metro use and that is about all.
But this video is really geared to advertising to people who are already interested in EV.
So I have to pay a fortune for it and live with all these adaptations and headaches? No thanks. I do love the gas powered bow thrower at the end. Hmmm. No electric?
35° in the winter isn't cold 😅
16 hours to charge? No amperage mentioned… slightly misleading.
Hmmm
No thanks but good info for Tesla owners.
I know how to manage an Electric car in the winter. Run it on Hydrogen. Hydrogen powered cars are a way better option in the long term. Review Toyota’s Hydrogen car. It is very good. The only challenge with H is filling stations. But, this is true with EV’s too. And if needed a Car could carry enough H to travel 1000 km’s no problem.
The problems of Tesla in the snow provides opportunities for research and development.
WOW... That is WAAAAYYY too much work. How would a non technically savvy person ever do some important steps to keep the car "safe" ie. the wiper blade winter mode thing or the auto fold feature?
So that’s why my Tesla was stock
It’s funny, you can buy a $50,000 car but can’t buy $2,000 in winter tires haha lol
Don’t ever tell someone to increase their psi in cold weather 🤣🤣
Haha weird how the websites said to increase it. I thought it should be decreased as well.
30 and 40 are extream cold? 😂
Who wants to wait 15hrs to charge and deal with all that non sense. For the cost of the car you can keep it!
I agree...
Just have an L2 charger installed. Stop whining.
i still don't understand why people have problem with the handles. Just press on the narrow side and it lever up and break the ice. It is in the manual...
you probably never had ice think enough which cannot be broken with hands, at that point there is chance you will brake fingers instead of ice
@@nickage872 I lived through ice storms multiple times in the last 2 years with my MYLR and not a single time I can't break the ice with that lever method
@@ac-stingz we have ice storms when you cannot open door even if you are lucky to break ice around door handle. I could not open door, trunk, mirrors for days. Everything frozen, and the only option is to wait for warmer days
@@nickage872 if you can unfreeze the handles but the door still got stuck, at least the heating in a Tesla can be remotely turned on and melt the ice trapped in the door/trunk seals. You don't need to wait days, just turn on defrost for 30minutes you will get an ice free car ready to go. Tried and true.
@@ac-stingz that's BS, I had heater turned on for hours, draining 30-40% of battery w/o any dfference. You probably never seen temps lower than -10C
Me watching this video at -9 degrees and 3ft of snow around me hearing words like “cold” followed by 20’s and 30’s lol
Hahaha
Cool bro you live in a colder area
It's all perspective. I talk to people online from SEA that think my comfy 65F is freezing (after I translate out of my dumb measurement system) and they'd even think my hot Summer is cold. People that live near me think 80F is warm. Meanwhile people I know in Alaska think negative temps are warm. Different people acclimatize to different things. Trying to gatekeep what "cold" means is pretty silly.
Kids and their toys…….
No thanks. I'll stick with something I don't have to worry about so much. BEV is a step backwards, not forwards. Gas or diesel is available most anywhere. Gas stations are manned. Charging stations are not. Gas pumps work. Half the time charging stations do not.
Charging stations are incredibly reliable, especially Tesla ones. What are you talking about?
You should be able to buy a Tesla for cheap soon.
20c is not cold dude haha
Heads up ev....for whatever reason your battery fails....it will cost you 58,000.00 dollars to replace...and that's a hundie ionic....
Don't believe me ...call the dealer
Of course every news channel is reporting on all the stranded Tesla cars that won't accept a charge. As long as you live in a nice area away from other people and have a good generator it beats having to put liquid fuel in a car. I love this type of advertisement. Nice home! What kind of work do you do?
Watch the video if you’re young and a beginner. Older people that’s been driving in snow knows when not to drive.
"When not to drive"? Huh?
No such time where I live. Maybe you live in an area where people don't own proper winter tires?
It’s all fun until you have to replace the battery!
The Tesla is the ultimate troll on liberals.
Will never ever buy a EV VEHICLE LIVE IN SASK CANADA TODAY OT IS -27 SO EVS ARE DANGEROUS TO HAVE IN REALLY COLD CLIMATE LIKE CANADA IN OUR WINTER'S
Your “cabin” in Lake Tahoe 🤣 …these clowns with their Teslas gentrifying Tahoe are so obnoxious
Wow....from a simple gas cars that were able to go anywhere anytime to this where you can't go more then 2h of drive and you need to prepare it for a space launch
Buy a benzin option, and relax. Come on! The tech is not mature enough to spend 60K Euro in Germany. No for electric until the tech gets better... sorry
charging this, range that. my petrol powered car went from 5.5l/100km on economically driven long trips to 8.5l/100km during my daily commute during the winter(without snow). how about tell the people the real down side of an EV while its snowing? let me do it for you: the now sticks to the car quite a bit more since the car isn't a furnace on wheels. also, you will need to clear your headlamps. also, there is no gears or clutch whih are sometimes helpful in taming the car in slippery conditions. but the upside is that the gradual power delivery(along with extra weight and relatively slim tires) means the car is quite a bit less likely to not be able to get moving at all.
...as someone that owns an EV that's absolute garbage for cold weather (Nissan Leaf), I can say I made it through my first Winter with zero issues. I don't live in some extreme place like Sweden or Alaska or something, but I live on a hill where it does snow. I put winter tires on and did what I normally do for a car. It was fine. My headlamps were fine. Heating the car wasn't an issue. It literally felt the same as my previous car which is gas-powered.
Also quite sure, based on what I've researched of Teslas, that the AWD Teslas will adjust their power output for the ice/snow as needed, just like your gearbox helps you. Sounds like a made-up issue from someone that doesn't own an EV to me.
@@kyleb8117 but did u try driving in an actual snow storm? I did and the lights bearly did anything since they were cowered in snow(cleaned up on departure) and it was harder to drive since there is no way to coast(wo the car breaking or accelerating) unless the driver is very accurate with the throttle. Yes, traction control will cut off power if it catches the wheel slipping and drive modes will reduce power and throttle response if the cars has them. Some rwd models actually needed to add a snow mode so the rear didn't dance around as much. Also, if the Leaf did fine why is it garbage for snow? Most people where I am from drive fwd hatchbacks and did so even when it snowed quite a bit more some 20 years ago. The notion that everyone who has ever encountered snow or gravel needs 4WD of some sort is a recent thing.
@@yvs6663 I say it's garbage for snow as a comparison to something like a Tesla with more actual tech designed for it. My car is literally just a RWD. There's nothing built in to help me. I managed driving ice and snow alright, but I sure wouldn't be comfortable in heavy snow or black ice across a street where you'd need studded tires/4WD/AWD/etc. I haven't tried driving in a snow storm with my Leaf because that'd be stupid, and I'm a safe driver. I'm sure an AWD Tesla can handle it, and I've seen people managing in various parts of the world here on UA-cam. One video I saw was a RWD Tesla caught in heavy snow and that's just being an idiot. You should know RWD/FWD isn't going to mange extreme situations, good tires or not.
I doubt the notion is recent, but I do understand that FWD and RWD cars can handle off-road or bad winters (especially since my car did as well as my old gas car that's a 4WD, but defaults to RWD).
(I also said garbage for snow because there's no thermal control on a Leaf battery. It's fully exposed to the elements.)
Thumbs down due to the click-bate title and number of in-video ads
booo google
You gotta give the damn thing 1 hour to warm up? My Subaru at 1/3 the price is toasty in 5 min.
Soobawooo
"1/3 the cost" only takes the retail upfront cost into account. What's the actual lifetime cost per mile to own your Subaru? A Model 3 works out to $0.49/mile. (The average cost of cars is apparently $0.58/mile.)
I tried to figure it out with Google (great method, I know 🤡) and it says a '22 Subaru Impreza is the most economical Subaru, which has a lifetime cost of ownership of $33,919 and 75,000 miles which works to $0.45/mile. That is 92% the cost of a Tesla Model 3. A bit off 1/3.
