Right now where we/I am the Temp is about -30°F / Windchill's factor almost 45°F and we/I don't see any Teslas around us driving... Based on reports the Range of Battery would cut down to 40% of the Original 90% and in some instances; The Teslas could not even start... Don't even think of getting out of the ❄ ❄ easily with Teslas where we live. Cheers,, Happy New Year 2024.
I live in Minnesota and have a 2022 Model Y long range dual motor. The car works very well in the winter. Cabin heats up faster than any ICE car I have driven, even at minus 22 degrees. While the cold reduces my range, nightly charging at home makes the issue moot. Traction is exceptional. My favorite feature is the scheduled departure time so the car is warm and ready when I leave work or home.
Also!!!! If it’s too cold to warm as your driving then navigate towards a charging station but not actually go, it will pre condition as you drive and warm up the battery to improve regenerative braking.
Even if the charging stations aren't working like in the news recently you can carry a generator in the cyber truck just like having spare gas for ICE.
2023 Model 3 long range owner here, i live at 11-12k feet up in the Colorado Rockies my car is parked outside all night all winter i do have some issues getting into the car when its really bad ice covered by snow or just ice and -40/-50 the battery range loss is noticeable but i dont drive too much when its bad outside since you shouldn't be on the road anyway as little as possible. the AWD system is amazing i have and still drive my 07 subaru impreza with 280k miles and that is the gold standard for AWD for me and the model 3 AWD is right there with it the weight plays a big part from what ive noticed in helping winter tires really grip. overall if you dont plan on driving over maybe 175 miles in a day things work great. PSA/tip buy a $30 windshield ice cover and shut it in the drivers side door and let it drape down over the door handle and shut it in the door by the handle and that will prevent 99% of the door handle freezing issues if you have any to begin with.
Nice notes on winter driving. Remember the Tesla parking brake is *only* on the rear wheels even for AWD! Good idea to put socks or chains on rear wheels parked on icy slope, esp. when plugged in, don't want to rip the charger out sliding downhill!
I think worrying about the cold is a little bit over done here. I live in Massachusetts and do not have a garage. I charge outside all the time in the winter. Is there some reduction in battery? Sure… But 50%? Definitely not! The car takes longer to warm up and for regenerative braking to work but besides that I haven’t really noticed any problems with the temperature below zero.
Only 1% of cars, even in Democrat NYC are EVs. Here in Democrat Minnesota, multi- hundred residential units are being built with no place to re-charge. What do a couple in an apartment do if they both have EVs? Do they both recharge in Walmart's parking lot till midnight in -25F weather?
I live in Western Canada, where winter temperatures can drop to -30 C and stay like that for a while. I feel PHEV is a better option for the weather here.
We had -40 to -44 one week straight last January , EV could drive to work, the diesel was frozen solid, all heavy duty machines without heated tanks, heated fuel lines/filters couldn’t drive.
Drive Uber in 0'F often in Michigan. I have copious records including efficiency. I'm 18% less efficient at 0'F. Worst case was when driving in unplowed snow where I dropped 35%. But gas/diesel also drop driving through unplowed snow at any temperature. I drive a '23 Tesla model 3. If I didn't have daily records, I'd not likely notice nor care about range changes. If people tracked miles/gallon as close, they'd see differences as well. EV under microscope because it's a new tech. People who live with them don't think about it after the first month. It just works
Not sure what happened to mine. I have the new model 3 LR 2024 that I purchased in August, it was around 20-30 degrees F in Columbus when it decided to die. I still had around 33 percent battery left, i think the 12v went dead and had to take it in for service. Still waiting to hear back what happened. Has anyone encountered similar issue?
Not sure. But I read the M3 owners manual, and that small "secondary" battery powers the interface & manages the charging of the Main Battery, so if that secondary battery dies then you cant charge at all or use the car. It SHOULD be kept topped up by the main battery normally, I think
Hey guys! LOTS of comments on whether to OVER inflate or UNDER inflate tires in snow. I was in the same boat. I thought UNDER inflating gives better traction in the snow and more control. However, every google search proves that you SHOULD keep tires Inflated or slightly OVER inflated due to the cold weather. Biggest is rolling resistance which will decrease your range in your Tesla like crazy. What do you guys think? Trust experience or all the articles on google? haha. When in doubt, double socks on all tires.. and stay safe!
In normal cold conditions on roads you should slightly overinflat it because it doesn`t warm up and inflat as much as in summer. But if you`re stuck in snow(or sand) you should under inflate it for more grip. But you shouldn`t drive like that regularly
I believe proper snow tires is the answer inflated to manufacturers' specs. Everything else can range from gimmicks, inefficient solutions, dangerous to stupidly dangerous in the mountains.
Interesting. Currently I have a 2017 Subaru Forester which has 8.7 inches of ground clearance which is about as good as it gets going through the snow. It has no door handles to freeze or frameless door seals to rip out with frozen windows. But the Tesla certainly has big advantages such as preheating while inside a closed garage. And there is no motor to turn over and warm up when it 23 below zero.
Sounds like if you dont have a charger at home in an area thats 15 degrees for over a month every winter you are screwed.and if your area loses power 3 or 4 times a year for 3 days or more then you are screwed again.
Here in Utah I go to work lots of snow and very cold days high 20s I go to work and for sitting out in the cold for a whole day of work (9 hrs) it only drops like 2 - 4 percent literally as much it takes me to get to work 10 to 12 miles not a big issue at all
35 degrees isn't cold, try -25. I know someone that has one and he hates it and regrets buying it cause they're no good in -10 and colder. The cold and kills the batteries in no time and takes forever to charge
Dont listen to these advice. Dont set chill mode since it only delays the reaction and comfort mode steering will give more jerky steering that you do not want in snow. Also do not overinflate the tyres as it will reduce grip. Inflate them att the current temperarure but not over recomended values.
my #1 tesla tip in really cold weather-- tell it to precondition the batttery, otherwise you will have no regen, which is really annoying on downhill bits....
Wow, freezing cold and three feet of snow, so he walks out with swimming trunks! Something is wrong with this man. Oh, I know, he suffers with a Tesla!
battery degradation is different than temperature compensation. If you're getting less than your normal range from cold temps that is not called battery degradation. of course your battery will degrade over time faster with colder temps.
Love that door unlatch feature. When I was first researching Model 3, I was seeing stuff about frozen handles and it made me nervous even though I have pretty short parts of Winter that are bad enough to worry about that. Still don't have an M3, hopefully soon, but good to know this feature! I am going to try for a reasonably priced M3LR, though, just to be sure I can get that AWD. Better safe than sorry, plus it means more range (and fog lights and better sound system?).
yes definitely get the LR. When i got my m3 their LR was on backorder or something so i ended up getting RWD. Trying out this first winter and see how it goes, LR still a better choice imo
@@HcutiegirlY If you happen to remember to check back, I'd be curious how it goes for you. I'm probably not getting a Tesla until February, realistically. Have to own my car until mid-January since I took the state rebate check on it. (Kinda hoping the state rebate comes back in time for my next car...or a massive windfall, which isn't likely.)
Most of these problems are the same with ice and EVs. Ice vehicles lose about 15-20% efficiency plus you will have problems with frozen doors and engine not even being able to start because of frozen fluids. At least with an ev you can start it. Door handles easy get a hair dryer or my friend uses a torch lighter but be careful with that one.
Any advice for snow chains!? I have the 20 inch rims on my model y and don’t want to scratch them up. I don’t think the snow will be as much as the video. But I want to prepared just in case.

Just drove a 2020 Tesla model 3 standard range model, 200 miles 100% fully charged. Driving from Irvine CA to LV, about 280 miles, to attend CES 2024; with not that cold weather, 50°F and windy, speed between 75-85 mph, I had to supercharge my Tesla 3 times at Victorville, Baker and Primm. Took 5 hours or so before checking in my hotel. On the way back, supercharged at Baker and Victorville before back in Irvine. My thought after this trip, cold temperature and driving speed really affect the range of a EV.
200 miles? Hmm. I fill up my car in Irvine, drive to Vegas, top gas up there, 5 minutes while I pee and get new coffee. See the show. Drive home. Another 5 minutes to top up the gas. 3 hours each way. Cold weather improves my range, car loves it. BEV is not ready for prime time. Great for metro use and that is about all.
I am thinking of buying a Tesla, but I am driving a lot through mountains during the winter and i was wondering if there is a way to save all the changes in the menu for like a winter setting. Like you press 1 button and it changes everything to what you have created as a winter settings?
I don't own a Tesla (yet) so I can't test this idea, but what if you made a second fake profile and named it "Winter" or something and you used that? I don't know if the profiles are only saving seat/window positions or also saving all your settings, and I also don't know how easy it is for you to swap between them. Curious to know if there's an answer to this one, so I thought I'd comment my idea.
Nice video. I do lots of off-roading and it’s actually better to have lower PSI in your tires for snow. I air my tires down to about 12 PSI for snow off road. The traction is a lot better. On the highways having around 30-34 PSI is better than 34-42
Great informative video Chris. You didn’t take the Turquoise X? What was your range reduce too? We planning to get another Model H which will be parked outside in frigid weather in the NJ/NY area. What do you recommend?
I live in Maine, just north of Portland. We own a 2022 Audi 55 Sportback Quantro. Audi has temperature mitigation system in the battery pack that prevents overheating and freezing. Summertime range has been up to 255 miles and have only seen a drop to 220 miles this winter. Have been quite happy with Audi after having own 3 previous ones. Tesla is a te technology company building cars where Audi is a longstanding car company with advanced technology. They won pikes peak over a decade ago with an all electric vehicle.
@@theodorehaskins3756 Audi were building EV' well over a decade ago, not being biased, just honest. Have toured the Audi/ Porsche production facilty in Germany.
I know how to manage an Electric car in the winter. Run it on Hydrogen. Hydrogen powered cars are a way better option in the long term. Review Toyota’s Hydrogen car. It is very good. The only challenge with H is filling stations. But, this is true with EV’s too. And if needed a Car could carry enough H to travel 1000 km’s no problem.
Of course every news channel is reporting on all the stranded Tesla cars that won't accept a charge. As long as you live in a nice area away from other people and have a good generator it beats having to put liquid fuel in a car. I love this type of advertisement. Nice home! What kind of work do you do?
I do not need to change drive mode in my car, because i have a Volvo, and they have fitted the car with computers, that handle stuff for me. So during winter and slippery, it just work. Living in Sweden so, yes, i have a lot experience of slippery conditions. You forgot to mention the windows that can also freeze and this makes it even more difficult to get into your car since the window must go down a little bit to open the door without damaging anything.
So I have to pay a fortune for it and live with all these adaptations and headaches? No thanks. I do love the gas powered bow thrower at the end. Hmmm. No electric?
No thanks. I'll stick with something I don't have to worry about so much. BEV is a step backwards, not forwards. Gas or diesel is available most anywhere. Gas stations are manned. Charging stations are not. Gas pumps work. Half the time charging stations do not.
WOW... That is WAAAAYYY too much work. How would a non technically savvy person ever do some important steps to keep the car "safe" ie. the wiper blade winter mode thing or the auto fold feature?
Heads up ev....for whatever reason your battery fails....it will cost you 58,000.00 dollars to replace...and that's a hundie ionic.... Don't believe me ...call the dealer
i still don't understand why people have problem with the handles. Just press on the narrow side and it lever up and break the ice. It is in the manual...
@@nickage872 I lived through ice storms multiple times in the last 2 years with my MYLR and not a single time I can't break the ice with that lever method
@@ac-stingz we have ice storms when you cannot open door even if you are lucky to break ice around door handle. I could not open door, trunk, mirrors for days. Everything frozen, and the only option is to wait for warmer days
@@nickage872 if you can unfreeze the handles but the door still got stuck, at least the heating in a Tesla can be remotely turned on and melt the ice trapped in the door/trunk seals. You don't need to wait days, just turn on defrost for 30minutes you will get an ice free car ready to go. Tried and true.
It's all perspective. I talk to people online from SEA that think my comfy 65F is freezing (after I translate out of my dumb measurement system) and they'd even think my hot Summer is cold. People that live near me think 80F is warm. Meanwhile people I know in Alaska think negative temps are warm. Different people acclimatize to different things. Trying to gatekeep what "cold" means is pretty silly.

Another 5 minutes to top up the gas. 3 hours each way. Cold weather improves my range, car loves it. BEV is not ready for prime time. Great for metro use and that is about all.
But this video is really geared to advertising to people who are already interested in EV.
Is there a heat line on door handle?
Chris, you're killing it with your content 👏 i love it! Keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks so much Mike! Anything you wanna see?
address leak at 4:50?????????????
Haha Ty! It’s the airbb address
Does the battery heater run on the batteries?
Yes.
On the highways having around 30-34 PSI is better than 34-42
I thought that too until I read it’s better to have more air lol I was confused
Less air = more rolling resistance and less range
Great informative video Chris. You didn’t take the Turquoise X? What was your range reduce too? We planning to get another Model H which will be parked outside in frigid weather in the NJ/NY area. What do you recommend?
Haha it was too new! Going to take it though camping in the x. Range reduction not bad if parked and plugged in!
Awesome video!
Yayy
2:08 "when it gets cold at 30° F"
Me: cries in -30°F weather, then tears freeze immediately 😂 wishing it was 60° warmer so that it would be 30 above
Nice vid! I wasn't sure if you had snow chains on rear tires... or is it necessary?
What are those covers on your tires? Do they act as chains? I’d like to purchase them if they do
Look for tire socks
Hey Chris, is your car lowered at all? If so wondering why besides aesthetics? Thanks
Nope! Stock!
Great video. Did you have to get chains and what tires do you have?
Video coming today in like 10 min!
This sounds like a lot of headache to deal with
You set everything to max safety. I switch off every electronic nanny und my Ioniq 5 RWD to slide around in the snow. We are not the same.
I’d say Tesla is more for people who like technology
Advanced technology! Really! So aren’t you being a bit biased here?
@@theodorehaskins3756 Audi were building EV' well over a decade ago, not being biased, just honest. Have toured the Audi/ Porsche production facilty in Germany.
@@johnwinslow4503 So that makes you an authority on advanced technology?
@@johnwinslow4503 So how many of these advanced technologically equipped Audi vehicles were sold last year?
Love your channel. Keep
It up!
Thanks John!
Good video. (Lot’s of EV haters in the comments though)
All my friends ds in Scandinavia where most people have a Tesla y-/ no issues especially in snaiw
16 hours to charge? No amperage mentioned… slightly misleading.
Good info. Thanks!!
Hey what’s up Chris! Good video bro.
What’s good !
Saskatchewan....minus 35f. Try that
Of course every news channel is reporting on all the stranded Tesla cars that won't accept a charge. As long as you live in a nice area away from other people and have a good generator it beats having to put liquid fuel in a car. I love this type of advertisement. Nice home! What kind of work do you do?
Wow!
So awesome! Good tip!
Charging stations are incredibly reliable, especially Tesla ones. What are you talking about?
WOW... That is WAAAAYYY too much work. How would a non technically savvy person ever do some important steps to keep the car "safe" ie. the wiper blade winter mode thing or the auto fold feature?
Great video. Would love for you to post your workout/fitness routine and related info as well!
Haha will do
Great video. Extra kudos on the Odesza track playing. Die hard Odesza fan over here 😁
Hahaha nice! Love them! Thank you Alex! Hopefully you subscribed! :)
@@EverydayChris sure did!
Heads up ev....for whatever reason your battery fails....it will cost you 58,000.00 dollars to replace...and that's a hundie ionic....
Don't believe me ...call the dealer
Kids and their toys…….
35° in the winter isn't cold 😅
Don’t ever tell someone to increase their psi in cold weather 🤣🤣
Haha weird how the websites said to increase it. I thought it should be decreased as well.
The problems of Tesla in the snow provides opportunities for research and development.
note: the #1 selling new car in Norway is Tesla. ( 11/4/2024)
i still don't understand why people have problem with the handles. Just press on the narrow side and it lever up and break the ice. It is in the manual...
you probably never had ice think enough which cannot be broken with hands, at that point there is chance you will brake fingers instead of ice
@@ac-stingz that's BS, I had heater turned on for hours, draining 30-40% of battery w/o any dfference. You probably never seen temps lower than -10C
Great content now I feel more confident having a Tesla in cold environment now I know what to do. Keeping it 💯
So that’s why my Tesla was stock
Watch the video if you’re young and a beginner. Older people that’s been driving in snow knows when not to drive.
"When not to drive"? Huh?
No such time where I live. Maybe you live in an area where people don't own proper winter tires?
Hmmm
No thanks but good info for Tesla owners.
The general rule is: look at the weather report for your location. And if there is weather, don't buy an EV.
Because..?
It’s funny, you can buy a $50,000 car but can’t buy $2,000 in winter tires haha lol
Me watching this video at -9 degrees and 3ft of snow around me hearing words like “cold” followed by 20’s and 30’s lol
Hahaha
Cool bro you live in a colder area
It's all perspective. I talk to people online from SEA that think my comfy 65F is freezing (after I translate out of my dumb measurement system) and they'd even think my hot Summer is cold. People that live near me think 80F is warm. Meanwhile people I know in Alaska think negative temps are warm. Different people acclimatize to different things. Trying to gatekeep what "cold" means is pretty silly.
Battery degradation is not the same as reduced range due to cold temperature…lol
too much walking on glass to take care of Tesla. I am keeping my 20 year old gas car with no issues. LOL
