hey, quick tip from a detailer! Please turn off the auto folding mirrors when your vehicle is not active for longer then 5 hours in the cold. We replace so many mirror motors due to the cold freezing the wires in position when they are folded in then get pulled out of their terminals or wires even pulled directly out. Best chance to save some cash is to turn it off unless engineers come up with a new way for them to work in colder temps.
You also run the risk of not being able to put them back into position when you are ready to drive the car. You should also consider doing the same by pulling your windshield wipers out as well in the event that they get frozen to the window. You should also have a widget update as well so wouldn't hurt to consider adding that to your homescreen to more easilly access the door feature for opening it as well. 👍

Also, just because it says the car is at the desired temp, it doesn’t mean that it’s done defrosting, it can’t possibly know if all the snow has melted or not lol. Just keep it running like that for 30/40 minutes depending on how bad it is, especially considering yours gets to stay plugged in. Another tip, keep auto folding mirrors off, Tesla recommends this when leaving your car out like this so you don’t damage the motors when they’re frozen.
I was leaving the airport the other day for the parking lot where my car was parked during the DFW ice storm. If you want to defrost a car, you should run all heatsources available in the car, steering wheel and seats too, letting more surface to warm up helps the air inside the car to warm up faster. Not just Teslas, any car.
They're less efficient - using tradicional heating coils instead of AC, anyway it's like 200W, nothing compared to the 7kW his car is using to defrost.
You are correct in theory, but in practice, I don't think that's going to make much difference. A typical car's main heater can produce somewhere around 5-10kW of heat depending on many factors. Heated seats are usually somewhere around 50 watts each, so that's ~100 watts for both front seats. Not sure about a heated steering wheel, but let's say it uses 25 watts- half the power of a heated seat. Now we're up to 125 watts, which isn't much when it comes to heating the air in a cold car. I like the way you think though!
Efficiency doesn't matter for heating, it all becomes heat in the end anyway. But yes, compared to the main heater, the difference is probably small. @@arturbieniek6360

dont need to leave it that long, the ice melts from the glass and out.. as soon as theres a thin layer of water between the glass and the ice, everything comes right off if you just wipe over it with a piece of cloth or something that doesnt leave scratch marks. as for the door handle, gently knock around the handle, water gets inside the handle and freezes that entire area in there. but gently knocking around the handle will break all that ice and it opens easily after 4-10 taps around.

@@777jrgstill Inconvenient, especially at that price range. And the door isn't easy to open just because it's unlatched. It would be an easy fix and one less point of failure to have pull handles on the door instead of gimmick handles that trade functionality for fashion. Or make it an option.
For me, the Tesla Model Y will be in my home garage during weather like this. So should not have to worry about the door handles freezing. Just need to precondition the car to get it warmed up ready to go. Thanks for the video.
Please note that after posting this video I learned that for the door handles to melt, you would need to leave the defrost mode on for 30 to 45 minutes instead of the 15 minutes that I did. After about 15 minutes the car sends you a notification that the cabin was at the desired temperature. Which made me think it was done defrosting. Hope this helps!
You can't charge in a power outage. But if you just plug in every day you come home from work, the car will always be ready to go. You'd have the same issue if you ran out of gasoline in a power outage. The gas station pumps need electricity to work, and queues become enormous if they have to pump manually.
The doorhandles are really bad... firstly for convienience and second for safety... how should you open a door from the outside as a first responser after an crash? And is the app still working when you dont have cell connection?
If you have the car for longer than 10 days you'd know that all you need to do is tap around the door handle 3 or 4 times and it will break the ice inside of it. It's not an issue at all.
@@777jrgthat's not always a solution in an emergency. And there are cases where even tapping and hitting doesn't work. I find your comments to be rude but wish you the best.
I use these features quite often living in WI-USA. Works great. I was surprised as well at how loud it can get when defrosting. Not sure if this is only the case with newer models with the heat pump vs older cars with the resistive heating.
It works better if you have the car precondition before using defrost. Heats up slow storing heat in the battery then blasting interior heat when you hit defrost. Gives more time for things to thaw.
The idea is that you can set a scheduled departure time. So you make set it to a set time every morning for example when you are going to work, and it will make sure that by that time, the car is warm, defrosted and has max efficiency.
Fold Family! Did you find any good mounts for the fold and model y. I've had the auto charge clamp type of wireless chargers in my ice cars for my fold.
Screen wash, which I'm guessing is wiper fluid? Where I'm from (USA) the fluid usually contains an antifreeze to keep it liquid in cold weather. I believe Tesla's would use the same antifreeze fluid as any other USA car.

As much as everyone wants to say these cars are the best I will still say I would go with a petrol vehicle especially in the winter time. I don't think they are really made for the winter, I follow a guy that is from Canada and the city he lives in is always in the negatives and he literally has to charge all the time the batteries don't hold up as well. Save yourself the headache and just drive a normal car lol until Tesla gets it together. They still have along way to go but they are still an upcoming company and still have a lot to learn. Great content keep up the great work!
@@777jrgnot true if you're going a very long distance. Of course you can, and should, charge at home, but getting back could be problematic. I will say, many of the complaints about winter charging are from owners without home charging though, as evidenced by the Teslas stuck in Chicago recently, of which most were rented Uber/lift vehicles that relied 100% on public chargers, which went down.
Quick question, is everyone watching this video owning a tesla? 250k is quit a big number, for me I don’t even own a bicycle but I am following the video very carefully. I think I learnt something, thanks.
Awesome. I have a Model Y as well and have had it about 3 months now. I'm here in Virginia and while we don't always get snow or a lot of snow one of the things I'm doing going forward is keeping up with the weather reports. I bought a Model Y car cover and on those days when it snows I'm just going to cover the car since I too park outside. Even if I have to brush the car cover off first I'm hoping it's going to be easier that having to clean off the car itself.
our neighbours old beat up prelude does this too - only diff is that with the prelude you can open the door handle without any fuss.did i miss something that this telsa does special?
Thanks! I'd like some times attached to the various defrost aspects, along with ambient temperature. To some extent the defrost function is hindered by the otherwise useful insulation built into the car. Eg this is why the door handles don't adequately defrost as heat from the AC doesn't seep out via the door mechanism. At least this defrost is real, unlike the many YT and other social media scam adverts for silly little gadgets which claim to defrost "very quickly" using "solar radiation". Doh!
Sigh.. The orange symbol in app means that the car is actively heating the battery. The blue snowflake symbol means that the battery is very cold and will not give full discharge performance. Do you just make stuff up as you go?
I personally prefer to use the traditional way, specially when you have thick layer of snow. Just use a soft plastic broom and the typical blue fluid to melt the ice that you can find in the mall.
Do the seat heaters automatically go on when you put on the defroster or heater? I'm in Florida and only put the heat on in my car once. I don't know if I accidentally hit a button or if it came on, but I could feel my butt getting warm. Does it know from the pressure sensor but you are only in that seat, or does it automatically turn them all on?
The 2 front seats and the steering wheel turn on automatically yes. But you can turn them off in the app like I did here. Also when you walk up to your car and open the car door, it stops defrosting and switches to your normal preferred climate setting, which in my case turns off the seat warmers.
In the app there is a new button called " Unlatch Door" pressing that will unlatch only the drivers door if frozen! took them a while but super useful :):) If you long press on say the lock button it brings up the different quick controls and its there and you can drag it up so when you open the app its sitting with the rest of your current quick controls
For opening a forzen door you can simply do a gentle punch whit the side of your hand (so not whit the knuckles) on the big part of the handle, it will always work whit me ;)

This is aHORRIBLE idea. You put room temperature water on a frozen windshield, you are risking cracking the windshield. Might work with a light freeze but in a true cold weather environment that’s a really bad idea
@@mjsabie8517it totally isn’t. you are making it straight up. last 10 years i’ve tipped 5L of hot water from my tap over my van and cars and had no problems. just don’t use boiled kettle water. stop spreading lies when you have not even tried it only read it from comments. try before you lie
A glass bottle isn't the same as a laminated windscreen 🤦♂️
congrats on 1k brother, just saw the 999 :)
Thank you!!!
Think -1° is cold? In sweden it gets to -29°
I mean, for me, I feel like anything below 10 feels the same.
Given, I've been in some subzero temps that hurt to breath but it's all hibernation weather for me lmao
Keep warm swede bro.
Hello. How much range do you lost after a frozen night?
The heating elements in my ford windscreen are brilliant, max one minute in any temperature and window is totally free of ice
I think the patent on this expired - Tesla should implement it. My Jaguar does it and it's a dream.
@@exwhyz33 it's on a few different cars and it's great. Biggest problem I see with tesla is that most other manufacturers are using matrix led headlights which are brilliant. Tesla for some reason is sticking with old technology which is odd for a technology Company
Also available on some VAG cars. My Ford and Skoda are defrosted and driveable in less than a minute. Waiting 5+ mins is ridiculous. I don't understand how people live without heated windscreens
Nice video!
With all that great technology and Tesla still not able to create better handle for the doors? I hate them, especially in cold weather.
There's a button in the app that you can press and it will unlatch the drivers door.
@@777jrg, I know but I am not that kind of guy, stranded at the phone all day, I like the normal door handles.
@@777jrgstill Inconvenient, especially at that price range.
And the door isn't easy to open just because it's unlatched.
It would be an easy fix and one less point of failure to have pull handles on the door instead of gimmick handles that trade functionality for fashion.
Or make it an option.
Can you defrost it when not plugged in and over cellular? Does the car have cellular connection to connect with the app?
For me, the Tesla Model Y will be in my home garage during weather like this. So should not have to worry about the door handles freezing. Just need to precondition the car to get it warmed up ready to go.
Thanks for the video.
You got the video in my latest article. Thx for the info.
I want someone how owns a Tesla. How does one charge their car while there is a power outage and a storm on its way how would one evacuate?
You can't charge in a power outage.
But if you just plug in every day you come home from work, the car will always be ready to go.
You'd have the same issue if you ran out of gasoline in a power outage. The gas station pumps need electricity to work, and queues become enormous if they have to pump manually.
Warm water on the door handles? I don't see any reason why not - just not the glass
What about the charging port getting wet?
How much range does it make you lose?
Not sure if this is only the case with newer models with the heat pump vs older cars with the resistive heating.
its actually running the motors in the car to generate heat to heat the battery and cabin. its like flooring the accelerator in place
i think it’s this loud cuz it’s using the drivetrains very inefficiently to help heat up the car
Why did the AC blasting inside?
It works better if you have the car precondition before using defrost. Heats up slow storing heat in the battery then blasting interior heat when you hit defrost. Gives more time for things to thaw.
So how is this different from any other car that's been idling in the driveway for fifteen plus minutes?
The idea is that you can set a scheduled departure time. So you make set it to a set time every morning for example when you are going to work, and it will make sure that by that time, the car is warm, defrosted and has max efficiency.
Fold Family!
Did you find any good mounts for the fold and model y. I've had the auto charge clamp type of wireless chargers in my ice cars for my fold.
Haven’t found a good one for that yet unfortunately
Quick question, does it freeze ðe screen wash in ðe cold or does it defrost it wið ðe climate control?
Screen wash, which I'm guessing is wiper fluid?
Where I'm from (USA) the fluid usually contains an antifreeze to keep it liquid in cold weather.
I believe Tesla's would use the same antifreeze fluid as any other USA car.
@@simeonellinger2064 okay, I’m in ðe UK and our screen wash/wiper fluid also has anti-freeze in it but it only goes down to -4°c (25°f) sometimes it’ll go to -10°c (14°f) but below ðat it still freezes on ðe windscreen and ðere’s no engine in a Tesla to warm it up when ðe engine starts getting up to temperature. I was hoping ðe climate control might have an effect.
It can be a big problem when it gets really cold
When plugged in, I let my Model 3 preheat for 2 hours. That way, it stays charged, but everything on the exterior is melted as well.
Sounds like that would be hard on the battery in the long run
@@techsteinyt I’m talking regular heating, not the battery.
If using the schedule function, the battery goes to normal operating temperatures, not SuC temperatures.
Dont you need identityplate in the front?
What’s the battery loss doing that if it’s not charged…?
About 5 percent extra on mine in uk
Off topic but what kind of jacket are you wearing? It looks warm and comfortable
I gotchu, I don’t think they sell it anymore but you could find it if you look up V.i.P collection snow yellow jacket
Can it be warmed up while not actively plugged in?
Yes! Same way from the app. It will consume quite a bit of energy though, usually between 2% to 8% depending on how cold it is outside
@@techsteinyt thanks. I was curious about this.
nICE explanations ! Thank you.
I learned the customisation of the app menu ;-)
What about the wipers ? Did they stick to the windshield or were they defrosted?
But one thing : this is very energy consuming actually 😒
It is, took like 8% of the charge. Also it did melt the wipers, they were fine.
@@techsteinytI thought you had it plugged in.
Isn't the charge instantly restored?
Or did it pull more power to defrost than what was flowing in?
Soooo,do,you need wifi to unlock?
how’s the charger in the cold and outside?
As much as everyone wants to say these cars are the best I will still say I would go with a petrol vehicle especially in the winter time. I don't think it would do good in the winter really do to the extreme cold conditions and the ability it needs to charge.
They still have some ways to go, I just tell myself to expect 280-300 miles in summer and 200-250 in winter. And thank you!
The thing about 'having to charge all the time' is that you just plug the car at the end of the day and that's all you do really. No bother at all.
Does the car have front facing cameras
I confirm it’s working pretty well on my tesla M3 with -9 degrees. But it just kill your battery you loose at least 5%
our neighbours old beat up prelude does this too - only diff is that with the prelude you can open the door handle without any fuss.did i miss something that this telsa does special?
Nah you didn't miss anything. Go on to the next video about your beat up prelude mate. Cya
what about the roof?
What temperature is it though?
Doh!
Need your phone and an app to operate your car is convenient but could also be an issue if your phone has issues.
Agreed.
Or what if your phone is frozen inside your locked car lmao or you drop and break your phone.
why do you have to cover your hand on License Plate ?
😮 y'all don't have number plates??
Sigh.. The orange symbol in app means that the car is actively heating the battery. The blue snowflake symbol means that the battery is very cold and will not give full discharge performance.
Do you just make stuff up as you go?
I personally prefer to use the traditional way, specially when you have thick layer of snow. Just use a soft plastic broom and the typical blue fluid to melt the ice that you can find in the mall.
why?
@@James-cq9dpwhy not. Saves energy
@@777jrg i guess
How do teslas not have signal on the side mirrors for your blind spot instead of the small ones
No signal but you get the blindspot camera on your screen once you turn on the blinkers.
@@777jrg Thats if u set that up
Tesla Model Y is a bunker or a tank ? something like that... why did it have Bioweapon defence mode ??
lol it’s a big name for a HEPA filter, it filters 99.97% of stuff in the air, tesla likes to go big with the naming for some reason.
Wait how do you have the vent mode us this a 2023 model
How about just covering your car with a special cover and just take it off when it snows like that? and the car won't use that much energy to defrost
It uses very little energy to do that anyway
Great video buddy
Is this defrost mode standard on all teslas or do you need to pay for it as an extra?
It’s available in every Tesla.
Curious, why do you have a dash cam?
It films inside and outside, good for ride sharing apps.
@@techsteinyt ahh make sense. Stay safe out there!
@@Nurse8812 I will try, Thanks!
Can we talk about the bio weapon mode?
Do the seat heaters automatically go on when you put on the defroster or heater? I'm in Florida and only put the heat on in my car once. I don't know if I accidentally hit a button or if it came on, but I could feel my butt getting warm. Does it know from the pressure sensor but you are only in that seat, or does it automatically turn them all on?
The 2 front seats and the steering wheel turn on automatically yes. But you can turn them off in the app like I did here. Also when you walk up to your car and open the car door, it stops defrosting and switches to your normal preferred climate setting, which in my case turns off the seat warmers.
just smack the door handle. works everytime for me and others^^
my 1999 wolvagen passat in 15 minutes all front window is clear from ice ,so this is bad
And please walk us through that process.
You did not show rear of the car ???
Didn’t have snow on the back, so I didn’t think I needed to

In the app there is a new button called " Unlatch Door" pressing that will unlatch only the drivers door if frozen! took them a while but super useful :):) If you long press on say the lock button it brings up the different quick controls and its there and you can drag it up so when you open the app its sitting with the rest of your current quick controls
I showed it in the video, but thanks for looking out!
Did you even watch the video?
And put the windshield wipers in “service mode”
For opening a forzen door you can simply do a gentle punch whit the side of your hand (so not whit the knuckles) on the big part of the handle, it will always work whit me ;)
