have done the stereo hack from day one on my Alter Ego x4. It does require me to turn the repeats down, but the entire effect is much more musical and spacious. Less intrusive too, while the tone remained convincingly vintGe. For everyone else who owns one: just do this. Another great tip is using a subtle, transparent overdrive (like an EM-clone) behind it. A total gamechanger when it's in your effectsloop!
It took me far too long to notice the logos changing on the wall. Subtle but nice. I'll be playing around with some of these tonight. Thanks for the vid!
Hey great tip. I borrowed my friends triple delay for a weekend and when i had to give it back i was going through delay withdrawal. Fortunately I saw this video and it gave me and my Flashback a new reason to get back together. Thanks TC
this is a great way to get more out of your pedals. i did this on my Alter Ego X4 and its great. like someone just said, the feedback you'll have to control more but its creates a more spacey sound, fuller, and more rounded. i love this. thanks guys
I started doing this a number of years ago with my Line 6 Tonecore pedals, They obviously don't have the flexibility that the Toneprint capability/app provides, but like these pedals shown here, they are digital and have stereo ins and outs. The most interesting results are obtained from time-based pedals. So delay, chorus, reverb, and flanging will work better than vibe or phaser, in terms of musicality. That said, sometimes you need to stick a volume pad of some sort between the first out and second in to keep it "musical". rather than turning into seagull sounds or other things that you'd consider special effects, rather than usable guitar tones. Depends on the pedal, of course. What was not covered here is the use of TWO or more pedals in this way. For example, fuzzed guitar signal goes into a flanger, whose output goes to a delay. The first delay output then comes back to the "other" flanger input, whose output goes to the "other" delay input. If you want to live life on the wild side, try doing this using reverse delay, so that your flanged signal is turned backwards, then re-flanged and reversed once more, only delayed. Just remember to phone in sick to work when you try it out, because you likely won't be leaving the house that day.
This has got to be my favorite ToneHack in the series so far. Sounds great thru my Alter Ego 1 (a collaboration between Pro Guitar Shop and TC Electronic.)
And if you do this hack with a delay and put another pedal in the feedback loop you can get some awesome tones. Like you put a chorus there and get a modulated delay.
Could you simulate an effects loop by running an extra pedal into the pedal? Example: I would like to feed a Octave up into an Alter Ego for an ice-type delay, for those ambient volume swells you guys showed in the video (in theory).
I have just got a flashback delay and tried this hack, works great ! I'm putting my pedal in two separate loops in my switcher, so that I can have either a subtle delay or a bigger one :) and if I use the double delay mode (quarter notes and dotted eighths), then I have two delay times on the fly. How great is that ?! Thanks TC for making an awesome product!
Is the signal chain this ? Guitar output into Stereo Input Delay One , then output signal is split 1. Mono Output Delay One into mono Input Delay Two. 2. Stereo Out Delay One goes into the Mono Input of Delay One ? Guitar > Stereo Input Delay One> Mono Out Delay One > Mono Input Delay Delay Two > Stereo Out Delay One > Mono Input Delay One
I love this. I wonder if you could daisy chain a stereo hack, flanger or chorus into delay and back into the first? Would it just create a never ending loop of insanity or might it just work ...I'm off to get some new 9v so I can try it out Oh an I like the logos comped onto the back wall. Nice touch 👍
I tried it, and it was totally awesome! I found this video specifically because I was looking for other people having done it. I totally loved the sound.
Well, that's quite ok if you don't. I found that I could controll the sound, and with adding a bit of chorus and a smeary delay effect afterwards I could do some pretty cool textures.
Nice video! Probably a dumb question, but is there any possible way that the stereo hack could be bad for a pedal? And has anyone tried it with a non-TC electronic pedal. Like a Strymon El Cap, for instance?
Estee Nieves if you do it wrong, R-R or L-L instead of R-L, you'll get a lot of feedback. With an analog pedal, you may blow something up. But give it a try I guess.
I think you don't push it far enough. I have a DD6 and a Nova ND1 and have been using this hack with both but in a slightly different way. Basically instead of looping the output in the input of the same pedal put it in the second input of the second one then put the second output of the second pedal in the second input of the first pedal. Truly amazing sounds! You can have reverse + delay or 2 delays or two reverses on top of each other, endless possibilities. The notes fade with changing resonance as they go through the loop.Try it!
+NotSoWickedElphaba thanks for sharing your experience with us. We're of course well aware of this. The goal of the video was simply to show how each individual pedal sounds with the stereo hack. We'll make other videos that dive deeper into the posibilities you get when doing the dual hack. But hopefully people will already start experimenting on their own after seeing your message :) Again, thanks for sharing.
+Des Trucs et d'Autres... Salut.
I just run in stereo, I have all of my fancy pants, overdrives in a BOSS NS-2, then use a parametric eq. I attenuate the volume, then split it wtih a TU-2 tuner. A: signal goes to my T.C. Electonic Nova Modulator, Stereo out of the Nova Modulator into my Eventide Pitch factor, then into a T.C. Electronic Nova Delay. Then into a stereo reverb BiYang reverb. The stereo signal goes into a Shure M60 Tube stereo phono pre Located in my amp/rack. Then it feeds my ADA Micro cab II. The inputs are y's into a hum eliminator and then into the stereo Orange Micro terrors. I get flawless tone direct and I can blend my SennHeiser e609 stereo pair of mics as well. I dig the strange sounds with the "Stereo Hack" thing. I can get the wackiness with my Eventide Pitchfactor. I am thinking of updating my Noise Reduction to the T.C. Electronic Sentry to replace the NS-2. I am a big fan of true stereo pedals. Allowing you to move them around and pass through stereo sounds from other pedals earlier through. I enjoy playing through stereo better. Of course it is a mono source, but stereo fills in sound. When I have my delays off, the reverb sounds just right not too much. I have it carefully balanced to not have the tone over effected. I have an option to run wet/dry/wet. I forgot to mention that output B: goes to a dry only amp. My tuner is in an unusual place. I plan on using the T.C. electronic polytune clip. I have redundant tuners in my setup. T. C. Electronic is my favorite fx now. I love the Nova series. I wish they had more presets and midi. I picked those units, because they were the most, "rack like" fx pedals I could find. I like delays with displays.
The Corona chorus patching is wrong, the guitar is plugged in the mono in and the patch cable to the stereo in, but in all other pedals is the other way around. Same for the outputs. That's why there's minimal sound difference and the player just tries to find something to say
Wauw! Cool video! TC always blows my mind with features and now this XD Can i use the patch cable configuration from the Helix, Corona and Vortex on my new Viscous Vibe? Without blowing pedals but just blow minds?! Cuz i get my Viscous in a couple days and i would love to try this with the toneprint on my pc....possibilities seems endless that way!
+roeletti happy you liked the video :) We also show how the patch hack sounds on the Viscous Vibe in this video. It's not as crazy as with some of the other effects. But give it a go. You can't harm anything or anyone by doing it :)
Could this be done with a Flashback 2 and a Flashback mini ? Is the cross- patch cabling only done with the delay receiving the input from the guitar ?
No. You would need an equidistant dual delay for that. A quarter and eighth note delay. Our compact delays can't do that. Our Triple Delay can though :) And we have a "Brighton Rock" TonePrint made by Brian May himself available for that one :)
Just curious, if I only have one flashback 2 and I like the sound you have demonstrated here with stereo hack but I also enjoy the traditional mono in/out, is there a way to have both without having to unplug or plug in back and forth?? Can I put an a/b switch in the stereo hack patch???
How about trying the Flashback Triple Delay? Better you do it first that way if it smokes something it's not mine... ;-) BTW, thanks for giving me a reason to keep my Alter Ego, was going to sell after picking up my Triple but now I think I'll go for the Stereo Hack and leave it on the board.
How can you sell your Alter Ego?I have the Triple Delay and Alter Ego X4 standing one next to another.Thats my delay setup.I will never take them out of my pedal board. The most complete delay pedals.
+Siavash Massoudi yes, but as mentioned in the video, it creates some crazy feedback noises. So if you want to do it, be ready to control those mix and decay knobs at all times, cause the sounds can harm your amp if you're not careful. That's why we didn't show it :)
+mickey_blue_eyes here's a link to an old video of the reverb experiment. As stated, we don't recommend you do this. It can harm your amp. ua-cam.com/video/-W3QAlLKrrw/v-deo.html
+JJAAHH no, but as stated, it can harm your amp if you're not careful. It creates a massive amount of feedback, that 1) can seriously harm your amp's speakers, and 2) will probably result in a rescue team bashing in your door, since they suddenly detected a serious seismic reading from your location. You have been warned :)
Gotta thumbs up that RUSH shirt all by itself. RUSH is the best. They started it all for me. All hail Lerxst (Alex Lifeson), King of Shmengland!
This tone hacks are IMMENSE and show the flexibility of TC's current superb set of pedals. MORE PLEASE, AMIGOS!
"I don't know how usable that is.... But if you hook it up to enough delay pedals, it'll be fun."
+Matt Snyder that's a mantra to live by :)
Very nicely played on the per-pedal background graphics, TC. Subtle. :)

+dre brose - We feel with you, man. Happy this video inspired you to get back in the delay-saddle :)
I just uploaded a demonstration of this hack on my channel after my instagram video. Thank you very much Stefan, keep'em coming.
this is a great way to get more out of your pedals. i did this on my Alter Ego X4 and its great. like someone just said, the feedback you'll have to control more but its creates a more spacey sound, fuller, and more rounded. i love this. thanks guys
+thegreatredbeard happy to hear that, man :)
You drove my cat nuts with the Helix! XD
thanks for the tip, I'm going to try this with my Triple delay and the Echobrain and see what sort of madness ensues!
TC makes some of my absolute favourite "Can never leave my pedal board" pedals.
+Travis Johnson - Thanks, man. Really means a lot to us :)

Love all your ideas. Very inspiring.
I tried this tone hack on my flashback triple delay and alter ego x4 and it works great, more lush sounds.
Alright Stefan, I just put my pedal up. Now I am going to have to try this.
+Kelly Holloway awesome, man! :)
And if you do this hack with a delay and put another pedal in the feedback loop you can get some awesome tones. Like you put a chorus there and get a modulated delay.
+Szabolcs Sárosi - Indeed! We'll make a video on that soon :)
Yeah i make a shimmer reverb with an octaver in thé reverb stéréo..
Awesome videos! Keep them coming
+Jinzo thank you :) We already have a bunch of other tone hacks lined up for the near future.
gonna try this hack tomorrow with my Corona Chorus & Jazz Bass
+Jimpotamus cool! :)
you should try with a volume pedal in between. gives you an "expression-alike" extra tone
Awesome shirt :) - yeah and great vid too
I'm mind blowed 😧 with the delay one
The "flock of seagulls" should definitely be a toneprint! :)
Oh my god, the hacked Corona and flanger sound gorgeous.
+Tanner Slice - Happy you liked the tones :)
i love T.C electronics so much!!,all of your pedals work great with my electric violin :D!!
WOW BIG beautiful stereo sound
Could you simulate an effects loop by running an extra pedal into the pedal? Example: I would like to feed a Octave up into an Alter Ego for an ice-type delay, for those ambient volume swells you guys showed in the video (in theory).
Hello Tc, i have one question. If i put the cable into the stereo in the other out put (like the video say) will it damage my pedal?
+lucio moriyama no, you can't damage your pedal with this trick :)
thanks Tc Electronic!
You are amazing!
I have just got a flashback delay and tried this hack, works great ! I'm putting my pedal in two separate loops in my switcher, so that I can have either a subtle delay or a bigger one :) and if I use the double delay mode (quarter notes and dotted eighths), then I have two delay times on the fly. +Hermel J. - Happy you liked the hack, man! Seems like you found a really cool way of using it for maximum effect :)
Gonna try this with the Mimiq when I get home!
Werner Schrooyen How did it work out? I was definitely curious on how that’d sound.
I want to hear what it sounds like when you plop some modulation pedal into the delay feeding into itself.
Is the signal chain this ?
Guitar output into Stereo Input Delay One , then output signal is split
1. Mono Output Delay One into mono Input Delay Two.
2. Stereo Out Delay One goes into the Mono Input of Delay One ?
Guitar > Stereo Input Delay One> Mono Out Delay One > Mono Input Delay Delay Two
> Stereo Out Delay One > Mono Input Delay One
Cool beans, man.
+Tyrion Lannister glad you liked it :)

Oh an I like the logos comped onto the back wall. Nice touch 👍
Seems a shame that this doesn't seem to work for the alter ego X4. I wonder why not. And it doesn't really do ducking either. Strange
Please please please do the Reverb.........
+mickey_blue_eyes i tried it with the Hall of Fame - it pretty much results in feedback which is unpleasant.
He said it was chaos
I tried it, and it was totally awesome!
I found this video specifically because I was looking for other people having done it.
I totally loved the sound.
Vidar Schiefloe i dont believe you.
Well, that's quite ok if you don't.

Do a stereo crossover thing to the sub n up please.
James Lynn It’s only mono unfortunately 😞

Ahh very tricky. I like it.
I would experiment with controlling the Helix “birds” with a Sentry or HyperGravity Tone Print.

the phaser hack sounds really got my dogs attention. LOL
+Leanne Windsor - hahahaha! Yeah, my dog gets a little wound up as well when I mess around with that at home :D - all the best - Stefan
Has anyone tried the Stereo Hack on the Mimiq Doubler to see the results?
Wauw! Cool video! TC always blows my mind with features and now this XD

Also works with the Flashback Delay? Guess what? I'll try
Could this be done with a Flashback 2 and a Flashback mini ? Is the cross- patch cabling only done with the delay receiving the input from the guitar ?
If I would do that with Flashback with 800ms delay time, minimum feedback and max delay level could i do the Brian May Brighton Rock sound?

would this work with a flashback?
What about the Ditto? What happens?
How would this sound with the Mimiq? I’ve heard people say that it’s way subtle in mono, but I’m wondering if that would thicken it up a bit more?
I'm willing to try this out on your behalf unless you've already tried it in which case please share results
Sean Wesley I haven’t tried it yet. If you don’t mind trying it, I’d really appreciate it!

I will do this hack on my T2
Man what a cool hack. I'm gonna try it!
What model is this expression pedal?
It's an Ernie Ball Volume Pedal :-)
Please do the Reverb.....
Does it also work with the ND-1 Delay?
+JackFou - yes. It works with all stereo effects :)
Perfect !!! :) :) :)
Does this work with other pedals? like Flashback into Timeline
+Joseph Lim - yes :)
is this hack safe for my Nova Delay?
+jack benson - yes it is :)
well that was fun... so much so that I went and bought a T2 too :)
Does this tonehack work on the Hall Of Fame???
+Siavash Massoudi yes, but as mentioned in the video, it creates some crazy feedback noises. So if you want to do it, be ready to control those mix and decay knobs at all times, cause the sounds can harm your amp if you're not careful. That's why we didn't show it :)
Looks like the guy from The Pedal Zone
Please please please do the REVERBBBBBBBBBBBBB................
+mickey_blue_eyes here's a link to an old video of the reverb experiment. As stated, we don't recommend you do this. It can harm your amp. ua-cam.com/video/-W3QAlLKrrw/v-deo.html
+TC Electronic O_O can you record those as loops for the ditto? Maybe tame them back a bit. Holy smokes
Tried this with a Line 6 M9... It didn’t work🤣
I was expecting Tone hacking like with Kevin Mitnick.
LOL :D
that guitar tone., makes me don't even care about the hack (in a good way) .. awesome, stefan!
nice shirt
Don't say the reverb is crazy and messy and not show us. I hate you.
It can't have been much more useless than the Phaser.
+TC Electronic Fair play! :)
+TC Electronic
Which is why you should use a hardware limiter whenever you're doing feedback experiments :)
Please do the Reverb...
Can this be done with the flashback triple delay?
