For more than a century, scientists have recognised that Vitamin D3 is involved in bone health. The latest research, however, shows that Vitamin D3 deficiency is linked to a range of other health conditions such as depression, back pain, cancer, both insulin resistance and pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, impaired immunity and macular degeneration. While it is clear that a large percentage of individuals are deficient, what is also becoming apparent is that our previous understanding of adequate dosing is way off the mark. In this FX Medicine podcast Professor Michael Holick is interviewed on the latest evidence in support of higher dosing of vitamin D and the most recently identified health implications for deficiency.

@@revert2islam2005 I can't find any real evidence except for warnings about vitamin D toxicity. I learned that it's very hard to get in trouble by taking too much vitamin D. Massive doses of vitamin D3 can cause magnesium deficiency, but if you take magnesium too it's almost never a problem, and vitamin D can cause blood calcium levels to go up, but I found out that it is pretty rare, and can be mitigated by taking vitamin K2 at the same time, and that is what I do, take magnesium and K2 with my high dose vitamin D.

I have been watching Vit D videos and reading up on the subject for more than 15 years. The science has changed somewhat as the research comes in. At this point I think that anyone thinking about taking Vit D get tested first. If you are under 40ng then and you want fast results of say 3 months rather than 6 months, start with a dose of 50K IU plus Vit K2. Do this for two or three days. This is a loading dose to bring you up to speed quickly. Then do a daily dose of 10K IU plus Vit K2. Most of the good brands come with the K2 built in.
Get tested every two months. Adjust once you hit your target. My initial target was 50ng. I then went for 60ng. I see nothing wrong with getting up to 80 ng. Lifeguards are often at that level or higher. Some hit 100ng. The most common recommendation by doctors nowadays is to aim for 40ng to 60ng.

Elsewhere, it has been recommended taking daily doses of vitamin D and not weekly and certainly not monthly doses. This is due to the fact while dihydroxyvitamin D that is measured in your blood has a half-life of 3 weeks, free vitamin D that is not attached to the dihydroxy molecule has a half life of only 1 day! And the free vitamin D goes directly to cells and is very important against infections. You lose much of the benefits of vitamin D when it is not taken every day.

I was impressed by this interview until the end when Dr. Holick said that he does NOT recommend standard testing for deficiency. How does that make ANY sense at all?
The whole interview was about how vital this hormone is to our health, all of the ways being deficient connects to illness, and the rampant deficiency across the world. Is the goal to help people or not?
Obviously people in general have no idea about anything discussed here. Why wouldn’t the doctor want to enlighten people and help make them well? Speaking from experience- you can be in great shape, eating very healthfully, have a deep tan from outdoor activities -and still be severely deficient in Vitamin D! Serious supplementation under a doctor’s care is vital. But you need to test your levels first! Makes NO SENSE.

I made an official proposal at my workplace to recommend and even pay for vitamin d testing. The idea being that healthier employees will have less sick leave and thus increase profit for the company - there should be an interest in that.
But obviously our company doctor is so convinced that vitamin d deficiency is not a problem that the idea was dismissed. In any case, it is documented, so when and if evidence emerge, at least I can say "I told you so". And what more do you really need. 😅

@Dennis O'Donnell...Initially my reaction was the same. I was surprised that Dr Holic would be saying that, so I had to listen again. However, the question Michael asked was, "should we be screening everyone?" Dr Holic's answer was, in general, "if there are other serious causes, then testing would be necessary". Then he gave the example of institutionalised patients. In their case, there are usually good reasons for testing.
However, generally requesting Vit D testing (screening) for everyone who goes to the Dr with some/any complaint of pain, will naturally end up being very costly for governments that subsidise pathology costs. This is what Dr Holic was referring to. As passionate as he is for treating the cause of many health complications with increased levels of Vit D, he does not see good value in requesting screening for everyone.
This is already the practise for testing by GPs, if you live in Australia, and Drs do not refer everyone for costly pathology tests, of any kind, unless really necessary.
Now, public can always debate whether this is fair or not. Quite rightly so. However, governments also have a duty in making sure that the funding for health (and other services) is spent in a balanced manner.
But I'm not advocating for governments here. Only pointing to the status quo of things, that's all.

Whilst 2-10,000 may be enough for the majority of people to hit 50ng/mL, there are outliers due to individual’s health issues where much higher doses are needed, so it doesn’t surprise me to see the occasional extremely high values in the comments section . However, I absolutely agree, no individual knows how well they absorb D, so testing is imperative to find blood levels, both initially and at intermediate stages if supplementation is increased.

I've regularly been taking up to 200,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day to counter my vitamin A toxicity for the past 5 years. I also take vitamin K2 and magnesium along with it. Vitamin A and vitamin D have an antagonistic relationship. Dairy fat is high in vitamin A, and it builds up in your liver over a lifetime. Vitamin A has the longest half-life of any vitamin A at about 5 months, but even after 5 years of the lowest vitamin A diet I can find (beef carnivore), I still have plenty of vitamin A. So, I assume that over a lifetime, the body can store vast amounts of vitamin A for decades.
By the way, most of the symptoms they are talking about here, from bone pain to migraines to muscle pain and autoimmune disorders all manifestations of vitamin A toxicity. If you have these, it will take years of ultra-low vitamin A diet to get rid of, along with supplemental vitamin D.
