I have zero experience cutting my own hair.
    I tried the second option.
I tied my hair, took a deep breath and made the cut. It didn't look as perfect. It wasn't as easy or fast. However, it gave me a great starting point.
I spent around 2 hours making it even and less rounded.
Just finished and I am very happy with the results! Thank you very much for this video ☺️

I just trimmed my hair tonight using this video, and am very happy with the result. :-) I have long, slightly wavy, quite thick hair. I sprayed it with water first to dampen it, as recommended.
First I tried the 1st ponytail method - and it worked perfectly for me, but I decided I wanted it to be a little less curved at the back, so I then decided to try the 2nd beard method - and it also worked perfectly for me. :-) My tip for anyone using the methods in this video - regardless of how much you want to trim off, start by just trimming off a very small amount, like half a cm, and check if you like the way it comes out first - if you do like the way it's looking, you can then repeat the method and trim off a bit more. Take your time, and check that you like how it's going as you trim a little bit off each time. Happy trimming everyone. :-)

NICE! I cut my own hair with method #2, and it worked very well! I do have some tips, though.
    1. CUT LESS THAN HOW SHORT YOU WANT TO CUT YOUR HAIR! - I cut about 3 inches less than how short I wanted to cut my hair, then seeing it cut successfully, I cut about the length I wanted, this time going about 1/2 an inch less. I decided it looked pretty nice that way, so instead of cutting more I just left it as it was.
    2. WARNING! YOU WANT GOOD SCISSORS. - I used normal barber scissors, and they worked great for when I cut the tips, but then as I did the second cut (where my hair was MUCH thicker) it got... difficult. My hair ended up very uneven and choppy-looking. I tried to even it out, and ended up spending 15 minutes trying. I have very *thiccc* hair (and that's with a TRIPLE C, folks. *THICCC* ), and recommend that if you have thick hair you either go to a proper hair cuttery (?) or you use proper scissors.
    3. DON'T PANIC. - I started panicking and it made things much worse. The hair started getting even more and more uneven. Then I realized: It's. Just. HAIR. Literally. If I mess up terribly, I could always go to the "hair cuttery" I mentioned earlier. I just had to make sure I didn't pass the length that I didn't want my hair to go any shorter than.
Voila. I hope whoever finds this comment buried by other comments finds this helpful. YEET OUT!

I used the second option and it looks pretty good! The scissors I have are pretty dull and cheap, so it was pretty difficult for me to cut a straight line, but overall I'm satisfied. With great shears, my haircuts will be perfect! Below are some things I wanted to point out in case anyone has a bunch of questions, like I did, before taking the risk of doing it.
I have very fine, thin, super-straight hair.
Before this cut, my hair was a straight cut across in the back.
I cut my hair when it was damp and it did not look good. I cut my hair again when it was dry and it looked WAY better.
I always part my hair on top to the side. I did that side part like I normally would, but parted the back in the middle.
Each cut I cut a tiny bit off, maybe 1/2 an inch each cut, just to get the dead ends off. I have really long hair, so I was able to take about an inch off total without it looking like much of a change.

  • @melissahiggins8893

After reading some of the comments, I tried #2 and it really, truly worked. Outside of doing a terrible job at trimming my bangs, I've never, ever, cut my own hair. I followed the steps as they were explained and I couldn't be happier with the result. For those of you reading this and for comparison purposes, my hair is down to my shoulder blades, fine, and thick. The only amendment I made was that I used an additional hair tie right under my chin, and then a second one further down, like in the tutorial. I don't know if this will be helpful for anyone else but, for me, the hair tie under the chin just helped in keeping a straight line to trim. Also, I didn't use any fancy scissors, just some little ones I had bought years ago at a craft store. Hope this helps!

If I go to the salon in Europe to have my split ends cut and my hair washed it would cost me € 50 but I never go to the salon again cause they do not respect me and they don't know what a centimeter is and then charge me way too much. Learned to dye and cut my hair myself. I hate hair salons. Maybe in a million years when my hair is in my crack they get to pick it out and cut it hahaha

I did the second option and it worked well for me. I'm trying to grow my hair so I only wanted to give it a trim.
Covid update : I wanted to give some tips to help.
    1. I have fine hair. Dont use this tutorial if you have thick hair.
    2. The end tutorial is ideal, if you've got someone, anyone, who can cut your hair and see the back, get them to do it, and find a stripy top to help them get it even.
    3. If you have a straight fringe/bangs that need cutting - get sellotape, put it on your skin a couple times to remove some of the stickiness. Then line it up with where you want to trim your dry fringe. Make sure it's straight and that you're lining up the sellotape line with where you want to cut. Then cut along, cutting off the sellotape, and the hair. My mum used to do this for me when I had a fringe as a kid cause I was anxious at the hairdressers and it always worked.

This is the DIY hair cutting video I've found. The one I used to follow was well done and was a good method, but it was labor intensive which discouraged me from trimming my hair as often as would have been advisable. I use the second method demonstrated -- pulling both sides of the hair forward and banding it together. For me it's easier than reaching behind my head. Although I only wear my hair in a braid or in a messy bun, I checked out the back with my hair down and am amazed at how crisp and professional it looks. I'm an older gal and not much interested in beauty videos, but I subscribed to this one to support the darling young woman who made it. Also, while I prefer no background music, hers isn't as obnoxious or distracting as some.

You must have super fine straight hair. This wouldn't work with thick hair because the pony tail would be too thick, and even bringing half you hair to the front would be too thick, even when wet.

I have never in a million years thought I would cut my own hair. But I just tried option 2, and I am SO happy with the results! I did it twice, cutting just a little (about 1 inch) each time. I made sure to part my hair straight down the middle, from the top of my forehead all the way back down to the base of my skull, if that makes sense (I don't know anything about hair/ proper hair terms). I had to use an additional hand-held mirror when doing this in order to get a good view of the back of my head, making sure the part was even all the way down. Then tied one hair tie TIGHTLY underneath my chin, and then tied another one closer to where I would cut the hair. Got my hair damp underneath the second hair tie, slid my fingers down to guide a straight cut, and just cut straight across with a random pair of scissors. Thank you for this video! :)

Okay I'd say the first one didn't end up great, in fact quite horrible. Then I did the second and it looked better, then I did the second again and tried to cut as straight as I could and remembered to keep my head straight (which I forgot the first two times). Keep in mind I only cut little off each time, which I'd recommend as well because in case in goes wrong the first time you're screwed. I can't stress enough to remind you to keep your head straight/keeping your face straight to the mirror as much as you can. This was first time doing it myself and I learned quite a lot from it, so I think next time will be much better. Either way I'm pleased with my result considering it was first time.

This is SO useful. I have been chopping my waist-length Covid hair over the course of a week. I first did the two pony-tail method to get feathery, face-framing layers. Then, with the back still WAY too long, I did your steps in order. However, for the third method, the back of my hair still has a severe V shape. After re-watching, I think I know what I did wrong. The bottom back hair must have gotten pulled forward, I think. I'll let my hair grow out a bit and try again. But, big thanks for so much useful information - and for keeping it simple and straight-forward !
