I didn't choose to wake up depressed, but I did choose to go to the gym because I know the gym helps. I think that happiness translates to "perfect ideal state" for alot of people (a smile, feelings of being generous, future looks bright and fun are some common side affects) and I think it becomes harder to find as you get older. Contentment is hard to find when your younger but gets easier to find as you get older which translates to "ideal state" (common side effects are steady mood, roll with the punches, function without a fuss on a daily basis) The reasons happiness becomes harder to find (I think) is mostly because you become more acquainted with reality either consciously or unconsciously. So although I agree it's a choice like fitness, health etc it requires more effort for some people to obtain and that effort can be the difference between "you need to take out the trash" to "you need to run a marathon"
But it is a choice just the same if you decide to be unhappy it's a choice you make by seeing what you want to see. Someone can come out of a bad situation and find something good from it or they can focus on the bad, why me and remain unhappy
