I agree partially. Happiness is a feeling. Being proactive that is a choice, and being proactive you can have more moments that can provoke happiness than just pretend you don't are responsible for most things in your own life.

You can say "happiness is a choice" to people who are suffering from severe mental illness. I'm extremely happy with what I have and who I am even though I have a calamitous circumstance and severe chronic mental illness. I don't tell about it to therapists or doctors because they would estimate my symptoms are minimum.

Anxiety which makes you progressive at work and strengthens your relations is good for later reward of inner happiness. If we are fulfilling your obligations everyday with a positive mindset, no matter how bad the outside world is, we will still have a peaceful mind and then happiness will drive our life.😊

This is missing nuance. The idea of happiness being 100% in everyone's control equally or not at all choice is a false dichotomy. Proactivity, empowerment (an internal locus of control), and personal responsibility are all likely to increase happiness, but for instance, there are many conditions and circumstances that people would never choose for themselves that make finding stability more difficult. You can't boostrap away the death of an immediate family member, even if you can do everything in your power to take care of yourself as that grief hits. Mental illness is another area where you can pursue treatment and make good choices, but you also can't, for example, choose to just immediately stop having PTSD from war. It's both a combination of making good choices where we can choose and accepting what we can't, and even then, there's so much grey area between the two depending on the situation.
I'd also say you're going to be a terrible support to other people if you can't empathize with the fact that they didn't necessarily choose their situation, even if they're working on choosing how they respond. "Your mom died last week? Have you chosen to be happy yet???" 😂
Yeaaah, there's a reason "happiness is a choice" is controversial. Not because it's entirely wrong, but because it's a huge oversimplification of how life really works. Be proactive but compassionate, towards yourself and others!

Happiness is not a choice. Happiness is a feeling and it is impermanent. Awareness is a choice. The more aware we become. Whether we are happy or not becomes less important. And we are in peace.

Happiness may be but real, substantive joy needs to be built. Never mind happiness and te new age mantra that it's a choice.

Ah yes. Conflating the ability to distract oneself for the duration of a meeting with being happy. What a sane and fair comparison that clearly takes into account the complexities of human emotion. Being able to distract yourself does not make you happy. Can you make things better than they are? Yes, in most cases. Does that make happiness a choice one can simply make? No.

I think it becomes available as a choice when work is put in to self worth
There are cases where something so profound d happens in the soul that it feels like a choice, or a person chooses to do better because they are not happy with the way they're doing things. Then the choice becomes available and maybe the person chooses to be happy, or sad, angry etc etc.

What about if someone is suffering from depression? How is this placed within the happiness equation?

  • @salmanaldallal5458

Your momentary happiness, for sure, without a doubt, will certainly depend on your situation at that specific moment. Now going ahead and saying that it is a choice to be happy or not at that moment, is a stretch. Say for example, Person X at moment T lost a close family member due to an accident. At moment T, it is impossible to say that Person X could chose to be happy, because for sure, he/she is in pain, feeling the shock, feeling heartbroken etc... It is unfair to associate feelings of happiness with Person X at moment T.
If we keep saying 'Happiness is a choice', we would be lying to ourselves. Lying to ourselves just makes us feel more miserable.

Not one serious and competent mental health worker would utter such nonsense as is trope "happiness is a choice". Unfortunatelly, that just isn't the case. Some people have such constitution that doesn't allow them to escape suffering without pharmacological help.

But you do see people in allegedly unhappy situations that are really happy, and people with seemingly perfect lives that are really sad. It is a choice at the end of the day.
However, a certain environment or a certain personality type can make that choice much more difficult, but I do believe it is possible.
Of course there are people that have legitimate mental health issue, that suffer from depression, that NEED external support, but I would rather treat that as an exception more than the rule.
I can say this though: every time I was really down and during dark times, I was thinking exactly like you, and everyone that said to me that it's a choice made me feel worse as that meant I'm responsible for the misery I'm in. The second I felt better I changed my perspective.

If happiness is a choice then there would be no need for interventions such as therapy, anti depressants, or counseling because we can all just “choose” to be happy! Like make it make sense! Happiness just like any other emotion isn’t that simple! Can you learn to gain some sort of control over your emotions yes! Can you develop a set of skills to maintain a level of happiness sure, hence the people that are able to be happy during tough times, but that isn’t how it works for everyone, you can’t reduce happiness to a choice when it is a subjective fleeting emotion! it isn’t that cut and dry!

I had clinical depression and very severe insomnia for a couple of years after a traumatic experience. I was in so much misery that I decided that I was not going to be depressed anymore. It was a 3 day, debilitating battle to make that choice, but I didn’t give up, I made the decision and I won.
I’ve made similar, strong decisions since then to change my life drastically, have a healthy baby, manifest love, keep recreating myself and it does all begin with a choice, which, excuses take away. Your power to make.
I do know what it’s like to have an affliction you feel you cannot escape and it happening to you. The truth is that there IS another world where your mental health is a choice if you are willing to be accountable and make change.
You can say it’s unrealistic, unfair or hogwash, but if that was so, I wouldn’t have been able to cure myself or others.
These things do exist and there is plenty of science and real life success stories to attest to that.
It all just depends on what you are choosing to pay attention to.
The voice of the victim? The critic? The voice of doubt? Or something more…
Your choice, I’m just letting you know it exists.
