On the last note, you can figure out what you'd want/love to do.. But how do you figure out what the society would want? Is there a general rule of thumb or something like that.
I try to follow the advice of Tim Ferriss to have a clue on what society wants. Which is to "scratch your own itch". Meaning that is a good idea to create something that you would love to consume (either by the emotions or utility that creates). When you have a certain market of one (that is, you), it is very likely that other people will also want to consume it. If you also happen to enjoy the process of creating that thing, and there is a big enough market (to make a living), then you can have some potential!
