TL;DR: Health Buff Officers don't affect the North Star Ship Ability.
In my recent server travels I've again seen players recommending to others to use officers such as Vella, L'Nar, Seven of Eleven, etc to leverage their Captain's/Officer abilities to inflate your health stats which would in theory give you a bigger bonus for your North Star's G3 mining speed. I had always been told NOT to do that as they don't work. Who's right? Who's wrong? Can we prove it? Let's do it!

Also on that one crew, you had Tribbles. That increases mining speed. Try another test but with Tribble below beck and some other non speed mining officer.
Thank you for pointing that out @Blakhawk1703 . We temporarily set the video to private earlier while running some tests to see how much of a difference that made. The video is unlisted now and we'll put an update out on Wednesday but that's the reason our math wasn't clean comparing the two.
This makes more sense and it could have been easily shown if the timer on the NS was accurate. Not sure why a ship ability does not use on ship stats for calculating but Scopely Math is just that.
It has always bugged me that the NS timer isn't accurate, lol. 100% agree that the ship ability should use on-ship stats, or at the very least clarify in the tool tip what you're going to get. Only gets worse the more health you can cram on it, lol. Timer used to be off by a minute or two in my 20s. Now it's off by 10 minutes or so in my 40s. 😅

If I'm actually using my NS to do wartime mining for crystal, I would use 11, 3, and 1 with health stacked underneath. Note, the timer will be wrong for how long it will take.
Great combination of mining speed and protected cargo there my friend. Usually I go for straight speed with the NS in wartime to try to get dailies tidied up (don't really need the G3 raw materials so much anymore, finally)

What the other chap said, in your Nero crew your calculations did not factor in the Tribbles buff the ships mining speed.
That does not take away from the main purpose of video, but maths were slightly off.

Thank you @Guy Price for the comment. We temporarily set the video to private earlier while running new tests and as you stated the main purpose of the video still stands. We've set this to "unlisted" for now so it can still be found by anyone with the link but we'll release the updated video on Wednesday and this time our math will match up 😅

disclaimer: i do not recommend to buy the automated defense ability for the northstar
i just want to notice that the northstar would benefit the most from it, because of the low protected cargo values
and it would have killed your attacker easily 😜
really too bad that the Ship Ability Building is only available at OPS25
the northstar is available at OPS18 , the Horizon with OPS26
would it be possible to get the "automated defense" right away at OPS 18
would be awesome - you would be save against OPS38 players
(and very very early OPS39 players)
BUT another problem - at least as far as I know the "automated Defense" gets removed when you dock to your station
that means a buff that would last hours will be cut of after i finish mining a single node
Losing the ability after docking is what I was worried about. That's a shame. Just like a lot of things tell sell in the shop they aren't available until a little ways after they would be most beneficial I guess 😬
I stopped using the NS around 24. Figured that I was done with it.
Mine collects dust in the hangar a lot of the time, but occasionally I'll dust it back off. When you don't have G3 mining dailies anymore it becomes a lot less useful, huh? 😅
The northstar is an excellent ship to use as the 1st stike ship of a raid. It packs a punch, has good hull health and costs almost nothing to repair. Its been a raiding staple since the beginning. No sense blowing up a. Enterprise to trigger the auto 10 minutes shield
FYI the Northstar has other uses than mining. Its an excellent battering ram to knock on the door of unshielded bases.

The reason the raw health crew did better is because bonus crew members have their bonuses added to the base rate which gives you less actual health than you get from the raw health crew with the research
why did you use 10of11? it did add a extra mining speed buff ?
Yep, good catch. A couple other people have called that out as well. We temporarily pulled this video down while running additional tests with 10 below deck and the gist of the video is the same. We're working on putting out another video tomorrow to show how much of a difference he made and what the absolute best loadout on the NS is for mining quickly. Thanks @Adrian Porada! 🖖

i LOVE the Northstar ... too bad scopely does not ...
until this day , the mining tooltip you see 4:29 is not correct
you have to use a stopwatch and then write the vales down
i did it in my testing every 60 seconds for at least 5 minutes to get my values
and i can get them VERY VERY High
Yeah, it's unfortunate that tooltip still doesn't work for the mining rate but I love the North Star nonetheless. I got it as soon as it was offered and still like to pull it out of the hangar every now and then, lol.
@@Secure_Play somewhere deep deep inside the grafics room is the exact mining speed formula for the Northstar ...
in territory space i should be able to mine G3 with 1100+ per minute
i really have to test it again ... and my officers still have potential to boost it even more

Why do you waste the time filming the entire duration of mining and clipping at frames instead of just looking at their mining/hour speed?
Main reason is because with the North Star the mining speed/hour is inaccurate and doesn't factor in the ship ability that we're testing here. See how much time is left on the mining timer when the cargo capacity says "full" in the last frames? The difference there is the Healthy Mining North Star ability. 😅
