I’d use this as a compliment to my U87Ai for live narration and Voiceover on social media. I’d also take it with me for when I have down time to record when I’m on set for movies.
I’d love to see a Julian Krause review of this high end audio interface. Given the quality and rich core features, i thought it was a little puzzling they went with a USB 2.0 profile on the USB-C, and didn’t include more actual mic preamps at that price point.
I'm assuming he won't for at least a while. He usually looks for good deals in AI's, and while this is a neat high end option, it's $2000. Even the $200 interfaces are giving specs above what microphones can realistically record anyway. Heck this year we're seeing 32bit recording which can record higher dynamic range than air can physically create. So... If it has features you want/need, get it. If not, spend the 1600 dollars you save on upgrading something else. Personally, besides price, I would say the main problem with this is the touch screen. Even good touch screens don't last forever and unlike knobs which can be replaced for a few dollars, the screen basically is the whole unit. It's also only 24bit, which is fine, but considering budget units are rolling out 32 bit... And most of the "features" are just vst that you probably already have for free in your daw. Realistically I think they just took the neumann name and put together a decent product that they know people will buy just because of the name.
I'm willing to bet with the Neumann name behind it they are gonna get WAYYYY more traction then merging tech was able to get on their own. like sure the Anubis is amazing and don't even get me started on the Hapi, but I'll bet you 90% of pro engineers haven't even heard of Merging Tech, ask any engineer you know (who isn't a classical engineer or a mastering engineer) if they have heard of Merging or Pyramix. Now Neumann on the other hand... That's a name the kid down the street with a behrenger mixer and a couple of busted sm58 knows about and aspires to own. VERY excited to see if this partnership between Merging tech and Neumann continues to develop! Lets just hope Neumann (or sennheiser for that matter) continue to give merging tech developmental freedom. really cool stuff coming from that company.
Wow! That dynamic range makes this the ideal interface for amp capturing or profiling via Tonex or NAM. All we need is a software converter for the various capturing platforms. We could then capture an amp with NAM and then convert the captures for play back on any of the various platforms, i.e., Kemper, Quad Cortex, Tonex or Headrush.
@@michaelraimondi4448 If you are using it in the studio....I agree. On a stage or traveling, that laptop and interface might be an Achille's heel. Hardware devices are usually more reliable.
So clearly I'm a visionary! It was impossible for a company like Neumann that does so many things not to do an audio interface. Finally! Thanks Mitch! Thanks Sweetwater!
It’s not a partnership. Neumann bought the company. They are colleagues now. Sennheiser is a smart family owned company with no stock holders to answer to. I expect some nice things from this merger.
If the drivers for windows are good..I'm going to upgrade to this. The specs are phenomenal. And it has a built in gate, compressor, limiter and reverb on the unit itself. Similar to the symphony desktop but has better specs imo.
I'm an RME guy and the Neumann honestly isnt too impressive in my opinion. Have you looked into the Babyface or Fireface UCX lines? They're at least as powerful as this, with the possible exception of dynamic range. RME is tried and true, been rock solid in my Windows 10 studio for years. I've got a UFX II and it's an absolute beast, 30x30 channels for not much more than this with even more functionality especially when recording a large group. I can set everyone up with their own headphones mix and give each person control of their mix from a free app. Pretty awesome stuff!
@@steven_porter I know about the ucx line and I am a digiface dante user. I have listened to the Merging Technology Anubis before and I can say that maybe only rmes true flagship can compete the sound quality of this one… In terms of other aspects like routing,if u know how to route with dante you will understand how much more powerful an AES67 system will be. But again, its all about the need. If anything u have on ur hand works perfect for you then keep on using it.
Neumann may have slapped their name on this unit, but it is obvious all the technologies in it are from Merging Technologies. The case, GUI, preamps, basically everything is the Merging Technologies Anubis. They just switched out the PoE for USB and added ADAT. It's about $350 less than the Anubis Pro version and $1k cheaper than the Anubis Premium.
Neumann’s goal is to be able to offer all of the options for immersive audio monitoring to engineers. This + a Merging HAPI/HORUS + a handful of Neumann studio monitors is the package they’re trying to make the first choice for engineers building a studio with immersive/Dolby mixing in mind. It being cheaper is a really great move on their part, they’ve decided it’s worth it and it seems to be great for getting people to ask questions about AES67 and the functionalities Merging offers.
@@Googahgee Does it have the missions that Anubis has? I didn't see anything as it looks like it is preset to the music mission (more or less). That said, I would think if you wanted a front end to a HAPI/HORUS, you would probably want an Anubis and not this. Hard to say how much the software differs, as well as the integration with other Merging Technology products.
It does have PoE. This unit is basically old news for Merging users. However having Neumann's name on Merging will help expand the market. Maybe Pyramix will catch on, too 😂

I have one of the Beta units. There is a setting that allows you to switch between fine and more coarse resolution on the on screen faders. I keep mine in the coarse setting. I have been using this for some time and the touch screen is fine. The internal mixers are super flexible, unlike any internal interface mixer I have ever used.
Any idea about about DAW recording? How do you record if there is no software ….Can it live in Logic? Does it play well with others….ie Apollo, if these Pre and converters are so good?

Can this output the mixed audio through to the monitor outs without being connected to a host (Mac/PC/tablet) ?
Don’t be surprised if they offer a control surface integration soon. It’s the next logical step. You can also control everything on the small screen on your web browser on your computer or multiple computers if you want a bigger screen.

@@hearmenow909 yeah.. a bit expensive cause it has good dynamic range, good audio interface, good monitoring technology with respect to other interfaces.
Thanks for the review. If the device does not need any drivers (and an app) on MacOS, it probably is fully class-compliant, which means it should work out of box on any Linux machine. You probably could mention that as well... anyway, does it need active cooling? I've noticed two little ducts on the sides which look like there are tiny fans them. Are they semi-passive kicking in only on heavy DSP processing, or do they just make some noise all the time? Can it run bus-powered only?
The cooling is user selectable. In most cases you will never hear anything. It is there for when the unit is used in a hot environment. It does get plenty warm because the case is a heat sync.
Can the MT48 support a simple hardware control surface similar to RME ARC-USB? DIM-MUTE-MONO and assignable shortcuts to some deeper settings like 48V would be nice. Otherwise, the built-in screen seems quite adequate for setting up and occasionally tweaking the interface.
Mitch you are the best ! Thank you for the video 😀 I'm living in the EU, and sadly the are no shops like Sweetwater here 😪 I mean not only the size and quality service, but with a UA-cam channel like this one and a "Mitch" like show host to give us details and and how-to use gear...
Thomann comes pretty close but it looks like the price here in UK is £2100 while sweetwater is somewhere around $1800 which is bewildering since Neumann/Sennheiser is in Europe. I do share your wish that we were within reach of Sweetwater though, seems like such a great company & Mitch is a legend
@@HarryLoveTV yes Thomann is a nice shop yes but not as nice as Sweetwater, the team in Sweetwater is second to none. Mitch is definitely the end game Boss. Anderton's in the uk have a funny dude who isn't bad as well in their keyboard section who do some pretty neat tests. Im a big Neumann fan have the kh speakers and headphones, but this interface is neat but way too expensive in europe right :) Hope they hear us lol
Spec seems to be almost the same with Anubis except for the USB-c and adat, but I've heard that MT48 did not use ESS chip on DA. Chip set is not everything but, wondering which chip set is used in AD/DA, aslo if there's any sound improvement
Thumbs up for having all the controls on top instead of the front, like many companies do. The rack style makes no sense for a device designed to be on a desk...
Hey there! Yes, you can still run outboard processing with this interface. The “send/return” will just look a bit different. If you’re wanting to run into something like an outboard compressor, you can run from either line out 3 or 4 (or both if stereo), and then run the output of the compressor line-in to either input 1 or 2 (or both if stereo). Hope this helps! Nick Pasquino, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3230, nick_pasquino@sweetwater.com
How many channels of aes67 can it send through the usb-c port? This thing is really perfect for location recording with remote preamps, local monitoring / headphones /talkback. The website mentions compatibility with their aes67 monitors, i hope they plan the monitor section to include atmos setups, that would make it a great contender.

I am very interested in this audio interface, but I would like Neumann to answer this question directly, which I think is important for many who intend to acquire it. Neumann MA 1 and it makes a lot of sense, but don't leave Sonaworks aside with the sound id, Avid or UAD itself made this kind of mistakes in blocking other programmers, many like me already have an ATC system in my case and I'm not interested in changing my monitors to have the correction when I can do it with the sonaworks Sound id allocated to the interface dsp as it is possible to do with the anubis merging, I would like it to be clear if they will access or not since many users have this question put, it would be good for Neumann as a company to set the example of entering the market with its open audio interface and not wanting to go down the path of the UAD that many are starting to abandon..
Hi, great question! Yes, the MT48 does have an internal DSP powered mixer and router, so you can send different mixes to the outputs and headphone sends. This would make it easy to have a click track going to one headset and not the mains, and would also allow you to control the volume of said click. This is a super cool new interface, so feel free to give me a shout if you want to dig in further! Drake Sobehrad, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3271, drake_sobehrad@sweetwater.com

Hi, thanks for your great review. I’m confused about the outputs. Can I hook up my 5.1 speakers? I need at least six outputs for that. Thanks in advance.

Hi, do you know how to setup loopback in MT48 for OBS? I can't get it, even though they say MT48 has loopback function
Hello!
Would like to ask whether MT48 also supports SoundID Reference
Love the presentation. 👏🏻
how does comfort reverb help the vocalist?
Great video but how about some sound samples?
I just ordered mine. What's the stand you are using?
(I missed it if he said it): Does this have Sonarworks built in, like the Merging+Anubis?
I couldn't find any info about it either, would be so nice if it would support Atmos room correction like the Anubis does.
@@HarryLoveTV Yes Mitch is a legend ☺. But as far as I know, prices in the US are tax excluded, that might explain the gap...
That price is about where I thought it should be (if it actually sounds as good as the speil).
I have the Merging version and it is by far the best sounding interface I have used. (Had an Apogee Symphony and a Slate VRS-8 before).
if it had 4 mic pre-s I would get one from that price.
dont see inserts, can this unit still work for outboard compression, fx ?
Hope this helps!

but but...is that a fan exhaust/vent on the side ?
How many channels of aes67 can it send through the usb-c port?
This thing is really perfect for location recording with remote preamps, local monitoring / headphones /talkback.
The website mentions compatibility with their aes67 monitors, i hope they plan the monitor section to include atmos setups, that would make it a great contender.
He didn’t mention anything regarding the quality of the converters
Mastering grade
no built in sonarworks?
what’s the difference between this and neve 88-m?
Can the pre amps be bypassed for outboard gear too ?
Hello - great question! If you plug a ¼” cable into the line input it will bypass the mic preamps, so all good.
Thanks!

Anyone know the wooden stand he's using in this video?
I mean, it’s nice, but could they make the logo bigger?? I can barely read it.
looks sweet. i am sure it sounds great
For almost $2K ….it should
Now all I need them to do is for the next iteration to be integrated with a DAW controller surface like my Presonus IO Station 24c.
I am very interested in this audio interface, but I would like Neumann to answer this question directly, which I think is important for many who intend to acquire it. Neumann MA 1 and it makes a lot of sense, but don't leave Sonaworks aside with the sound id, Avid or UAD itself made this kind of mistakes in blocking other programmers, many like me already have an ATC system in my case and I'm not interested in changing my monitors to have the correction when I can do it with the sonaworks Sound id allocated to the interface dsp as it is possible to do with the anubis merging, I would like it to be clear if they will access or not since many users have this question put, it would be good for Neumann as a company to set the example of entering the market with its open audio interface and not wanting to go down the path of the UAD that many are starting to abandon..
does it with any virtual channels such like the ssl 12 or the apollo?
i like to rout out my click to a separate channel out from my Daw
Hi, great question! Yes, the MT48 does have an internal DSP powered mixer and router, so you can send different mixes to the outputs and headphone sends. This would make it easy to have a click track going to one headset and not the mains, and would also allow you to control the volume of said click.
This is a super cool new interface, so feel free to give me a shout if you want to dig in further!

With the 2 signals that can record at the same time, does that mean I could keep both signals and use one for parallel processing?
Hi, Brent! Thanks for your interest. Sure, if you record both the dry and processed signals, you can always blend them for parallel processing. Definitely a useful feature!
I hope this helps - feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again!

I wonder how different this is from the Anubis sans a few features. This would be my new aspirational interface
How about the preamps? Are they RME equivalent?
probably better
Superb 🥀🌺🥀🥀🥌
All I need is an MT-48 and 2 Neumann mics to record my vocals & acoustic guitar and get my RIAA certified Gold Record...Muahahahaha
😂😂😂
It's a shame the reverb cannot be printed... And no loopback. Or am I mistaken?
The reverb is monitor only unfortunately but the unit does loopback all day long. The routing is very flexible. I am using it to loopback for use with OBS.
@@tedbahas - thanks 🙏
There is a Bus Return Mix feature explained in another video showing that you can record it or stream with Reverb the outs
@@stringsriff - thanks!
Hi, thanks for your great review. I’m confused about the outputs. Can I hook up my 5.1 speakers? I need at least six outputs for that. Thanks in advance.
maybe you could run the headphones out for a total of 6 outputs
Hello, Jonathan! The MT48, only having four analog audio outputs, would not be able to support 5.1. As you said, 5.1 requires six total outputs. If you need help selecting an interface for surround sound, feel free to contact us!

Is it bus powered?
Hey, Paulo. No, this interface is not bus powered. It does come with the included power supply and can be powered by a power supply from 9v-15v.
I hope this helps!
