This is the only channel with actual audio example from the neumann mt48 on UA-cam. For those of you complaining of how it was done, be grateful they actually took the time to do it. In my opinion it was nicely done.
Nice demonstration video. Lisa presented well. I liked the breakdown of parts and spelling out the signal chain. I'm impressed that so many of the sources were basically direct. I guess country songs let you get away with that easier. LOL
Beautiful production and all. What would be more useful IMO is to show us what it can do that, let say, an ID44 or anything in that "less than half the price" range couldn't.
What is the Electric guitar signalflow? Does the guitarist use some UAD Dream pedal and from there in the RNDI and the MT48? It is not a dry direct guitar signal? Or is some amp added in the box?
@@Sagerydian We're using a Cranborne Audio 500 Series rack/interface to feed into the ADAT input of the MT48. All of the guitar effects are coming off of Kevin's board. He's using the UAD Ruby for amp sim.
Great presentation Lisa. Just fyi all, you have some kind of plosives thing going on at 2:04, 2:06, 2:06 and slightly earlier to a lesser extent. I think below 40hz. It seems to be coming from the acoustic guitar strum (looking at the video and listening). Bit of high pass filter should fix that :). Thanks for the great video. Cheers.
@@annekedebruyn7797 Don't you think if Neumann engineers had done design work for it, they'd be pushing that in the marketing? It's just a name and ADAT slapped on an Anubis.
Kinda the best of both worlds. A whole lot better software UI functionality. The Anubis had a very deep and complicated interface. That was a blessing and a curse. Neumann had them add ADAT I/O and USB I/O so it functions much more like a traditional interface. The converters and pres on the Anubis were already reference quality. Simplifying the interface was a big deal. What is not getting mentioned on a lot of these initial videos is flexibility of having both ADAT and AES67 and a mixer that can accommodate both with full processing.
Love VK and the musicians here but I don't really "hear" whats so special about the Neumann MT48. Are the effects from the unit? I would love to hear a similar tracking and mix from the UAD Apollo X. Even though there is a ton of debate about the quality of the conversion in both units, I'm not about to trade in my X4 for this. Thanks for the demo!
Appreciate the feedback. We really try to think of the best ways to show this gear off in practical scenarios. Adam's vocal and acoustic guitar portion of the video offers a brief look at what the interface can do on its own. In the future, we'll try to show a little more.
@@vintagekingproaudio Thanks for the response! And thank you for creating this first look at the interface. I think my honest thoughts are: I REALLY want to like this unit, however it is an expensive unit. Recording DSP is a slowly fading need with current computing technology however it’s still interesting and I’m curious how the compression and EQ is implemented. Also for conversion, I’m curious how well it performs compared to others in its class, is there an objective way to test that? And something becoming more critical for mastering is the quality of converter clipping & accurate monitoring. At this price, I’d hope conversion can handle more rigorous applications but that’s not fully clear to see with purely a performance video.
Firstly, I own and use two Apollos for my business (tracking bands and live settings). The Merging converters are some of the best in the business. That's why Neumann bought their company. They are much much higher end than UA's current products. But you still have to have great monitors, a well treated room, etc. to get the best you can. If you have those things with your x4 then you are in a good situation. This interface is going to be somewhat more flexible than the x4 as far as connection options, cleaner and stronger preamps, and software routing. Because it has ADAT In AND Out you can run it more easily with outboard gear, and things like a summing mixer, if that is what you like to use. With the networked connections you can run to other high end gear for more I/O, especially over longer distances than what Thunderbolt offers. You can get excellent results with Apollo and Console. But this thing is engineered with more options and better components.
@@vintagekingproaudio oh its all good! I'm just wondering about the onboard reverb/effects I hear in the mix. I think you did a fine job with the tracking and maybe its not your place to "shootout" interfaces like this. I just can't help but look at the form factor and think is this an improvement in overall quality vs the interface I have now. I appreciate all you folks do over there.
Thanks for the video! First thought for me is everything sounded pretty open, which is wonderful. However there doesn't seem to be any mention if there is any processing that we are hearing? Is the audio mic to convertors only or is there any eqing going on? Thanks!
They also don't reveal what gear they use for the AD-conversion of the 8 tracks they feed into the MT48 by ADAT. So this whole demo doesn't make sense at all - you only hear the MT48 on two tracks. The vocal and the guitar of the singer. The other 8 tracks are converted by another piece of gear and by outboard preamps in a 500 series rack.
Yes I said live Neumann mic a condenser so to fully experience the power and clarity of the mic pre. I'm supposed I have to explain this to a vintage king sales guy.
Spec seems to be almost the same with Anubis except for the USB-c and adat, but I've heard that MT48 did not use ESS chip on DA. Chip set is not everything but, wondering which chip set is used in AD/DA, aslo if there's any sound improvement
4 ins and 2 preamps at $1850 is a bit steep. Something tells me you are just paying for the name Neumann. Even though another company made this (Merging Technologies) So many UA-cam channels pushing this thing. They either got these free or they are getting a nice paycheck.
There are various features, functionality, and performance (such as dynamic range) that you simply cannot find on any other interface. Yes it's an expensive Neumann, but they did go out of their way to provide something you can't get elsewhere.
I've been looking at the Merging products for a while now, but didn't pull the trigger. This costs less than those! And it costs a little less than an Apollo x4. The 8 tracks via ADAT are converted by another piece of gear, they don't tell us which one that is. So only the two tracks you hear (vocals and guitar of the singer) are the MT48. The others are outboard 500 series preamps into some AD-converter.
