Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

@Steven Prime I don't get why American People get worked up, because of people having sex at 16 years old. That's literally the age women are physically built to start doing it. It's their thing wheter they do it or not. It almost seems like you get your morals from the laws and not from critically thinking about it. Why are people called pedos for advocating for teens having sex. They dont want to have sex with them, they want to legalize something they are probably doing anyways. @justinian1962 you definitely sound paranoid, and likely have tons of guns in your house that you never use, and think spending more money than the entire world combined on the military is considered a "good idea". I can respect being prepared when it's reasonable, but any further I do not.
No one has given me a good enough argument against supporting Bernie Sanders. There's just not enough wrong with what he wants. I mean, how can you argue against making insulin actually affordable like the rest of the world? What about trying to create a better environment? A lot of what he is proposing is considered "radical" or "socialist" when in truth it's just what's already been implemented throughout modern Europe.
We aren't electing dictators, and there's not enough to make any leader able to turn our country into an authoritarian government. It just won't happen, it's not possible unless our culture actually shifts on itself. Same issue with removing guns, that won't happen. Any extreme policy he'll try and implement that isn't agreed on, he'll simply be forced to compromise. I can see him doing that, because he's so passionate about his views that he'll do whatever he possibly can to make it implemented, even if compromises must be made. He has passion to his ideals, and has been consistent with them for decades. A good debater, and knows the right decisions for war issues (he literally predicted the outcome of the Iraq war) and knows what's actually important for our nation, itself, and the success for it. When our nation fixes itself, THAN we can help the world. It shouldn't be the other way around like us helping Israel despite them not giving a shit about us.

If you're getting your political news from mainstream media, you're wrong. One of Hillary Clintons biggest supporters is time Warner who owns CNN. They keep as many facts about Bernie away from their viewers as possible. This is why we are standing up and fighting against these large corporations. It's a rigged economy and we're almost to the point where elections are controlled largely by the media/large corporations. The media has a lot of power over the minds of America because people still have that small bit of hope that CNN is an honest unbiased news source. Almost every single mainstream media corporation is trying to prevent Bernie from winning, to include the newspapers.

@@carriesee7209 his brother chocked up in 2016 even thinking about it. He lives in the UK and went to the DNC convention to announce the primary result of the expats (which Sanders won). He got quite emotional and even Bernie had to hold it together. They interviewed Larry Sanders later on that - still chocking up. - he is a nice guy, too.
Both brothers are amazing people. His brother is in the green party in the U.K.

You could also take a look at Northern Europe in particular, some of the best functioning societies on the planet, with some of the highest standards of living with the most happy and well educated populations, and they have both socialized healthcare and socialized higher education. They work just great, in fact they play way less for their healthcare than the US does per capita. How is that for efficient?

Be prepared for the Hillary counter attack. I suspect it will come from an angry Canadian First Nations person complaining how their land was taken to build the hydro-electric dams.

I grew up like Bernie in the street of New York playing tag, stick ball and a whole load of innocent games and I too learned democracy on the streets of New York, in the Bronx. Bernie absolutely has my VOTE!
Mr. Sanders, despite all you have done, all you have accomplished and yet remain so humble, makes you one of a kind. I am not American nor reside in the United States, but as a Canadian and former combat soldier my wish for humanity still goes beyond my own borders. I may not be able to vote for you, volunteer, nor be allow to support your efforts financially with a donation. But I will pray that in 2020, The United States of America and the entire world get to address you as Mr President Sanders. Of all the candidates, you are the only one that can get this right.
