In a "breakout" re-edit of a section of the Indiana Jones 5 Mega Review, Michael discussed the devolution of Indiana Jones' famous outfit from Raiders of the Lost Ark across the four sequels ending with Dial of Destiny, and how the costume has over the years gone horribly off the rails.

It would be one thing if they had changed Indys attire to reflect a change in his style as he aged,as one normally does, but they decided to "keep the look the same" and if that is the appearance you are going for, then get it right,or don't do it at all.Great video once again.

Right. The different coloured shirt, _drastically_ different coloured trousers, and the bag having a totally different strap & playing schizophrenic musical chairs on his body...it was atrocious. I thought the no holster with revolver was my biggest issue; but since that was a no-go, them not getting the quintessential look right became the main blunder.

They're all like cartoon movies. Serials from yester-year. To me, it makes more sense to keep the outfit the same. Even in my non-cartoonish life, I'm still rocking the same boots, wallet chain, jacket, etc. that I've had for a very long time. If I had a quintessential adventure outfit, you bet it would stay the same. So anytime I need to replace something, I'm getting the same style item. Or you could look at it like Indy isn't OCD or sentimental (but they're definitely kinda sentimental), and doesn't care certain things have changed.

Or he could have a whole closet of the same outfits, like Keaton Batman or 'insert other character opening up their wardrobe to reveal all the same outfits.'
I suppose my messages came across like I was all worked up over the outfit being different, but it's not quite like that. It's just about impossible to convey tone and nuance in text.
But I hear ya man on what you were saying regarding your dad's uniform. It's still awesome Harrison is in the shape they are. I know/have known plenty of guys a good bit younger than them that seem like they're decades older than Ford. My father's the same age as Harrison, has just about the same body as they did 40 years ago, and goes on a walk everyday after getting up. Even when he's in the garage smoking his pipe (filled with Captain Black, not crack lol), he's standing and moving about.

Oh yeah. A fourth and fifth Indy movie made in the '90s would've been the way to go. Instead of The Fugitive and Air Force One, in an alternate universe, we got more _'Harrison still in his prime'_ Indiana Jones movies. Who knows why this wasn't done, 'cause I'm quite sure they had a few good scripts lying around at the time.

He did, but only because he was shot in the arm in Indy 5’s cold open. So they kept continuity within the film itself rather than across all films. Personally, I assume he has had more than one jacket, otherwise we would have seen the bullet hole from Raiders in Last Crusade.
Although I suppose he could have had a profession repair done since Raiders and then gave up on that sort of thing after the Dial opening. If we want to believe that they are meant to be the same jacket all through each movie.

Short story - I was outside Bernie Pollack's office (Bernie was Ford's personal designer) when he was prepping for Crystal Skull when who should appear but Peter Botwright (of Wested Leather) all the way from England. Mr. Botwright had come with jackets in hand to show what he had made for the previous films, but Bernie somewhat unceremoniously dismissed him out of hand, telling him he had his own guy to make the jackets.
Mr. Botright was stunned and all I could do was shrug and look sympathetic.
A lot of these decisions come down to the peculiar whims of the costume designer - and they ARE whims without any discernable rhyme or reason.
Add to that the fact that big stars like Ford will not let you dress them to make them look their best and this is what you get.

It bears repeating. As for myself, in the early days, I never assumed that the outfit was supposed to look the same, given the wear and tear that had to be part of his life, but of course that was before they made the hat part of his origin. For one story, at least.

Glad I'm not the only one with the same feelings on Indy's classic look throughout the film series. When I first watched the "making of" Documentary in the first DVD box-set released in the decade of the 2000s, the costume designer for Raiders revealed the logic and care that went into Indy's clothes and how it was featured in the film, it gave the impression of an adventurous man who practically lived in his clothes and that his hat was very much beloved. In my eyes, Indiana Jones looked natural in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but in the subsequent films afterwards, he's wearing a costume.
And yes, the Raiders Hat IS the Best and True version of Classic Fedora.

Great video, and I loved the full length one as well.
I have to say, on a personal level, I don't mind the slight tweaks to his costume over the years, as long as they don't defy logic and common sense. (As some of them clearly do, like the placement of the satchel) Don't forget, he leads a hard life, so some shirts, jackets, and hats are going to be worn out over the years. I don't have any clothes that I owned ten years ago, let alone since 1981, and I'm not an adventurous explorer! I love the franchise and was very disappointed by the last instalment, but not because of Indy's outfit.
Incidentally, if you look at the still from Raiders at 4:32 and compare it with your Raiders outfit at the end, your whip and holster look distinctly more orange. Is Indy's just more weathered?

If they really did want him to lose the gun for the plot, he could have lost it like in Temple of Doom or have it taken like in Crystal Skull and it would make sense.

Last night, I watched Raiders for the 300th time -I'm old enough to have see it on the theater back in 81) and I noticed two moments were Indy wears his satchel over the right shoulder. First, just at the begin of the movie (just when editor Michael Khan is anounced in the credits). The whip is also on his right. It looks like they flipped the image in order to keep the characters "going to the right of the screen" on his walk thru the jungle. The other moment is when Indy borrows the horse to pursuit the truck with the Ark. This time the satchel is on the right, and the whip on the left. However, the satchel goes back to the left during the chasing scene. On the other hand, I completely agree that the Raiders look, hat and whip are the best. Just a small easter egg: in the Disney Plus documentary about Indy and Harrison Ford, there's a still image during the shooting of the Raven. Harrison Ford is not wearing the leather jacket. However, he's wearing a shoulder gun holster. I have never notice during the movie that Indy is wearing one.

I know you said no headcanon, but I just figured it was never supposed to be taken as one set of clothes throughout the entire span of the movies. Indy gets the crap beat out of him in his adventures and he probably goes through clothes constantly. We see how destroyed his clothes get in Temple of Doom and then they're brand new again in Raiders. And there's no hole in his jacket in Last Crusade from where he gets shot in the arm during the truck chase in Raiders. The guy probably goes through clothes all the time and maybe sometimes can't find the exact same stuff, especially if he's in different countries and all, so he just finds something close. Even the hat. Getting them wet all the time like does really kinda ruins hats like those so he probably went through a few of those too. Just the way always kinda thought of it. Good video though. I obsessively researched which jacket to get before I finally decided on the Todd's Costumes one because it looked the most like the Raiders jacket and it's my favorite one so I noticed the differences in the different movie costumes too lol.

That's a really cool green variation of the shirt at the beginning of the video. I would not mind getting one of them.
Attention to detail is always important. The satchel strap under the jacket is something that those making the new Indiana Jones game also seem to have missed as well going by what was seen in the recent trailer for it. It is all the more bizarre when the game attempts to recreate that scene from behind him at the beginning of Raiders. How did they miss that the strap was under the jacket? As the game is set between Raiders and Last Crusade it makes no sense why Indy would wear the satchel strap over the jacket. Then again it never made any sense why he would ever wear it over the jacket in any of the later movies either. It is pretty sad that Harrison Ford himself never seemed to have pointed out this either when wearing the outfit in the later movies.
I always liked the look of the jacket in Raiders and Temple of Doom as it looked like it had been lived in for many years where as in Last Crusade and Kingdom it was a lot puffier and like something that had just been bought off the shelf and weathered a bit. It was not shaped to his body and that jacket should be like a second skin on him. It also looked slightly oversized on him in Raiders which it never did in any of the other movies.

    • @josephkelly9514
      @josephkelly9514 11 місяців тому

I never felt it was oversized in Raiders. It was just a tight fit but not too tight. In the other ones it looked a little looser but look how many times costumes change in movies. Take for instance Friday the 13th. I know it's a low budget horror movie but the mask and look of Jason changed with each subsequent film. The same with Michael Myers mask. I liked The Dial Of Destiny but I never understood why they made the whip black just very odd. Great video by the way. Love the attention to detail.

I happen to love the gags about his classic outfit in the other movies, and I even like that each film's look has it's own subtle differences (although the Raiders hat really is unbeatable). But your points about the lack of care in DoD's look are spot on. One thing you didn't touch on, but really bugs me: for some reason, they kind of switched the color hues of the shirt and pants. The shirt now goes towards a yellowish regular khaki tone, while the pants are almost grey... even the hat ribbon is the same tone as the hat felt, losing that contrast between a brown hat and an almost black ribbon. Anyway, great video, specially for those of us who pay attention to that kind of stuff.

It was last Crusdae again which I adore, that I just felt something was off,Indy looked ever so slightly different and this video proves it. Both Crystal Skull and Destiny shows even more signs of the costume not being the same. I could never quite put my finger on why or what the reasons were but this explains it so well. Re: 'Dial of Destiny': In essence, Indy's adventure outfit was the only clean thing he had to wear in Tangier. And who said he's playing "low key"? I don't recall him saying that at all. I doubt that the manhunt for him in New York would've been international, let alone the ability to get information about him to various airports in a timely manner back then. He wouldn't have had to hide once he left the country. (V more below)
He ran from the bad guys through the parade in the suit he had on from school. Salah picks him up and, after a brief stop at Salah's home, takes him to the airport. He didn't go home and he didn't have time or anything else to change into. Salah hands Indy his bag with his adventure garb, which he managed to grab from Indy's apartment before picking Indy up. Indy wears the professor suit on his flight. On her own flight, Helena covers the dial piece with the red shirt she's wearing later at the hotel.
I'd gather they both went straight to the hotel from the airport and changed into what they had on the way. He doesn't have the bag any longer when he arrives. Either he left it in an airport locker, if they even had one at the Tangier airport in '69, or left in the cab. My guess is he ditched it along with his professor suit.

One thing that stands out is the pinch on the fedora got smaller and smaller in each film. I always thought he started wearing the shoulder strap over the jacket because of the tank scene in Last Crusade...well thats how I justified it. lol. And of course Disney takes away the gun. ugggh.

Always knew there was something about Indy's hat in Raiders... It's edges looked sharp and lighter than in the sequels. Also missed the gloves, but I guess Indy only wears it on excavations, which he never did after Raiders.
With that said, I think Temple of Doom had the 2nd best take on the costume. Sure the jacket draped and the whip was all over the place, but it really fits in the atmosphere of the movie. It's almost like Fred C. Dobbs from "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948). Raiders went for a more clean, confident look, Temple of Doom went in a more deliberately sloppy direction, being the only movie where his attire gets absolutely trashed. It really brings out how much Indy was struggling through the 2nd half of the movie.

Great video. Great attention to detail. Also, you can really pull off that fedora. I guess I never thought about Indy's outfit as a costume. I always thought of it as the wardrobe selection of a gruff, matter of fact adventurer. Pieces selected for practicality. Hat for shade, jacket for warmth, gun for protection, satchel for carrying artifacts, bull whip...got me there. But I see your point. Also, talking about costumes maybe Melissa and Conrad can put together a Dreamland episode contrasting American and British popular 80's costumes. Thanks for the video.

The thing that’s ALWAYS annoyed me is the loss of the gloves and the shoulder strap moving outside the jacket. In Raiders the look was perfect and because the bought the stuff from all over it has thar thrown-together-and-yet-carefully-selected look an adventurous archaeologist would probably have😊. Mind you, the bag was a WW2 British Gas mask bag (thar somehow time traveled back to 1936) but even so…it’s a shame they didn’t get all the details right in the later films.
But I still love all the movies. Raiders is the greatest for me by far, it’s just so lean and magnificently staged and Ford is on top of his game. But I grew up watching all his movies from 77. I can’t diss him at all, he always gave it everything. Yes, Skull had lots of dodgy bits and yes, so did Destiny but I like how they wrapped up the character’s finale. I’m 55, I was 11 when I saw Raiders and I admit that I cried when Dial finished. I looked past the cgi and lack of Spielberg & Lucas wit and I cling onto that character for dear life.
The outfit might have gone a bit wonky at times but the invention of Dr Jones is still amazing.
We need new heroes in movies again. Not more sequels and reboots and original stories or prequels or comic book stuff.
Let’s make it up as we go, instead of remaking the same old stuff.

I've been harping on about these very issues since Last Crusade! I don't subscribe to the "same costume carried over for all 5 films" theory. Its just silly. Heck In Raiders Indy left his fedora and satchel on the Bantu Wind! So I guess Indy would have had different Fedoras, jackets, Shirts, boots and everything else over time. But would it have killed the Dial of Destiny Wardrobe Dept to at least fit out Ford with clothes that actually fit him! It is however the least of the films problems.

I do think a lot of your complaints about Indy's outfit in Dial of Destiny amount to not liking the updates they did deliberately to bring him more into a 1960s world. The shirt, for example, is clearly a deliberate choice. You even point out yourself that they included something approximating the original shirt in the flashback, only to replace it for the 1969 period. Which only makes sense, he wouldn't wear the exact same shirt for 30 plus years, that's absurd.

7:58 this is sort of that head cannons stuff you don’t like but I’ve always thought the reason his holster changed from Temple of doom to raiders and so on was because he lost his gun in the very beginning of the film during the car chase. Indy forgets this until he tries to shoot the swordsman and notices it’s missing. So do the Indy buying his Smith and Wesson custom built short barreled revolver that he uses in Raiders he would need a shorter holster. The great circle already confirms why his revolver changes from Raiders to last crusade due to Voss taking his pistol at the end of the game.

I take a backseat to no one in my utter disdain for Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny, but some of these nitpicks could be simply the narrative choices by the filmmakers. The shirt being different for instance. I mean, do we really expect Indy to be wearing the same shirt 30 years later? I don't own any shirts that I was wearing thirty years ago. Having said that, they should have never made the last two movies. If they really wanted to continue Indy's adventures, the role should have been recast with Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper and kept in the 1930s.

the bag strap over the jacket is an issue that bothered me all the way back in Crystal Skull, it was something that to me they just got wrong. However, I have come up with an in universe explanation (more so for in Crystal Skull).....Indy is a smart guy and would learn from his mistakes / experiences. In Last Crusade he rolled off the tank and the bag strap got caught on the gun turret, causing him to hang on for his life as the tank dragged him through the dirt. Being under his jacket, meant that he could not easily get out of the strap. So after this experience he started wearing it over the jacket. Just a vague explanation. But I still don't like the look of it over the jacket.

Its like blue jeans today or jean jackets or Carhartt jacket. Levi's may look similar today but are different. They changed the material a few years back to a stretching material and the cuts are not exactly what we might have had when we were younger. Carhartt for example made a Detroit esienhower cut jacket that i used to buy. They have now changed to oversea manufactors and deleted the waist adjustment straps on the sides.
I just assumed that the type of jacket indy wore was available in different cuts , lengths etc. He owns several and used them all from time to time. I personally have 5 jackets i wear to work and they are all the same size and exactly rhe same jacket. Just different colors and none fit exaclty the same.
This applys tonthe pants/shirt/shoes/holster. The hat is a different story.

Same with the custom shirt to the safari shirt once indie turns old, he hasnt been the kick ass dude he once was, hes a washed out alcoholic who lost his son, wofe, and drive for adventure. He prolly got a new hat and new clothes to better fit him. My view on Indi's outfit has always been it's an aesthetic but not meant to be the exact same clothes in each film, except for maybe the jacket. Remember his shirt in Temple of Doom gets shredded, so it can't be the same one in each film's canon. In my mind he has a drawer full of safari shirts of varying shades and utility and another with cargo pants and belts. The jacket and hat feel like the only thing he would re-use every time. Or maybe he even has two of them, one smaller and one looser. I have two aviation jackets that look almost the exact same except one has a stud press button at the top of the collar and the other has a brass zip. I keep one in my car in case I ever break down or stay the night somewhere and need something rugged.

I kinda wished he changed his look a bit to reflect his age. But the same type of shirt, pants exact model bag and shoes seems weird. You’d think he’d upgrade his adventure carry a bit over the forty years. I’d imagine his hat would age, or be reformed just few times over the forty or fifty years. After how many adventures? Get a new satchel. Maybe he’d carry a knife instead of a gun? He’d definitely get new clothes.
Indy is Harrison it’s a bit more than his clothes. But the shoulder strap placement not under the jacket is a big goof. It would slide around quite a bit if it wasn’t tight. Plus his buckle would be rubbing against his jacket. I agree, he always seems dressed for the situation. Wearing the leather jacket with a bullwhip in a club is not low profile. We may not be super happy with DoD, but I hope Harrison had fun making it.
