I’ve always owned and loved DeWalt. Recently this Black Friday I dipped into Milwaukee as well. After having tried multiple different impacts including the DCF850, 840, and the Milwaukee gen 4 2953, I still prefer the DCF887 purely for its mode 1. That mode is so nice for precision work. If I’m doing heavy work I usually keep it in setting 2 so having the most powerful impact has never been a must for me. All of the newer Dewalt impacts have a different feeling mode 1 that I’ve found less useful. The 845 looks sleek but I’m gonna keep my 887 until it breaks. Not for the cost savings, but because I actually prefer it to the newer offerings.

@@DiligentDave19661st. Those vids such as VCG Construction where the DCF877 has smoked where in EXTREME usages. The DCF877 was not meant for or designed to bore holes in concrete. The other smoking vids where during driving long fasteners into 4X4 6X6 wood, I can't answer or suggest why they got hot and quit working, this Is a puzzle to me as well. That's why I purchased the Home Depot extended tool warranty. By the way Home Depot is I'm my opinion very good about warranting expensive purchases. I have a Black and Deckwr 3/8 drive HammerDrill, YES Corded. I was hanging Christmas lights on a two story home, My dumb ass didn't use a security lanyard tethered from the drill to my belt. I set it down to string the lights on the fasteners I just set. The drill slide down the tile roof over the side and landed on a metal fence spike and broke off the forward backwards switch lever at the base of the switch in the bmhandle.GAK😮 Home Depot offered me a full refund, or store credit as B&D stopped making cord powered Hammer drilles. I didnt accept either, i found aomeone selling their exa t same model and I bought it to use as a spare parts tool for my B&D.
      TO?ANSWER TOUR QUESTION:
Not in my use of it. Mostly though My use is in installing server racks installing servers into those racks for data centers and MDF closets. When I've needed to Bore anchor holes into concrete to secure the rack housings, I've never had any smoking, the housing does get warm. But I got the hammer drill impact driver kit. So hole drilling is left to the hammer drill. The impact is for installing the fasteners.

I actually like the 850. I think Dewalt kept getting pestered about releasing a new flagship impact driver to replace the 887 and they said “duck-it”, let’s put a speed selector on the 840, tweak the motor so we keep the tried and true 1825 inch pounds of torque we have had for 20 years but give the people a bit more IPM and call it a day because we’ll still make millions of dollars on it and hit our sales quota. That’s how Stanley B&D is.

Dewalt should have held off from releasing this XR until they could either redesign or increase the performance, if they wanted to drop a 840 with modes it might have made more sense to call it 841 instead of 845XR. Like it or not Dewalt XR is Milwaukee Fuel in most people's minds and with that said, people are going to expect a certain bump up in everything to justify the XR title, my example would be 800 and 805 and the advantages gained with these models over previous XR or standard brushless.
