As much as I love Harry Nillson too, Three Dog Night took "One" to another level. On the other hand, Harry took "Without You" from Badfinger to the same level.
You may give their cover of Argent's "Liar"a listen. Danny Hutton sang the lead. He recorded his vocals in a bathroom to give it a haunting echo. Great Russ Ballard composition.
The UA-cam Clip of Three Dog Night doing Eli's Coming 1975 is an awesome live performance. They start by showing off their vocals. You can see just how good they were.
Floyd Sneed was a talented drummer. He was born in my home city, his sister was married to Tommy Chong and he was in Tommy's band before TDN. Passed away earlier this year - RIP Floyd.
Three Dog Night was the greatest cover band in the history of the modern R&B/R&R era. I had the great pleasure of seeing them three times in the early 70's and they always had the crowd enthused and rockin'. Great times, the greatest of days.
Before the sixties, bands and singers didn't usually write and perform their own songs. There were songwriters, and there were performing artists. The success of The Beatles (and others, such as Bob Dylan) changed all that. Three Dog Night wasn't a "cover band", they were just a holdover that was still following the old ways. During this time you also saw songwriters pivoting into singer/songwriter careers (think Carole King, Randy Newman, Harry Nillson, Neil Diamond) in order to stay relevant-not to mention employed.
Really hard to imagine a world were somebody hasn't heard this song before. Its one of those songs that I feel like I was born into this world knowing.

“Jane” is making the rounds because Mickey Thomas sang Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell In Love” which was making the rounds prior to “Jane”. Folks always thought Elvin Bishop sang that, but it was Mickey Thomas, one of Elvin’s backup singers. Starship hired Mickey after that.
Three Dog Night are such a staple for 70's music. Love "Never Been to Spain", "Cowboy", "Out in the Country" "Good Time Living" "Woman" and Elton John's "Your Song".
Three Dog Night is a shamefully underrated and often overlooked group. "Shambla" and "Family Of Man" are their best song, along with "Pieces Of April", "Celebrate","Out In The Country", "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Black & White", "The Show Must Go On", "Easy To Be Hard", "Never Been To Spain", "-HEAVEN is In Your Mind"".

Three Dog Night was my first favorite band. They can do soft(Pieces of April, Easy to be Hard), hard (Liar, Eli’s Coming,Fire Eater), whimsical (Joy to the World, Black & White) or just plain good (One, Celebrate, Shambala, and many more)!
These vocals, so much soul! The band's cover of "Try a Little Tenderness ", "Pieces of April", "Never Been to Spain". Love all of them, this song was huge, great memories!

Three Dog Night played at a day long music festival I went to - Beggar's Banquet, Toronto 1971 - along with Yes, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Joe Cocker, The Guess Who and others I can't remember. Phonetic associations and puns, love it, been there. "Eli's Coming" Soundstage 1975 is my favorite. Speaking of Nilsson, "Me and My Arrow" from the animated movie "The Point" 1971.
Take three super-talented singers with voices that blend seamlessly together, add in a jam band that could master (and draw inspiration from) any musical genre, and you get the magical mastery of Three Dog Night.
I was in junior high school and working part-time in Rudy's Record Store when this record came out. It knocked my socks off. It has remained one of my very favorite recordings of all time.
Funny story. My now 30 yr old son loves them- begged to go see them when he was about 7 . We went. He’s slumped back in his seat, just watching the first few songs- they hit the first notes of this and he bolts up in his seat. He turned to me and my rarely serious kids says, “THIS is why I came.”
The Nilsson version is much mellower and jazzy. So much so, there is a flute solo instead of guitar riffs. You are right, 3DN is great an unlocking the potential of a song and turning it up to 11.
It's the perfect storm of great range of vocal performance, top-notch musicianship and creativity with great songwriters, nilsson, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams, Randy Newman.
While TDN covered other artists' songs, they always fought against ever being labeled a "cover band", because unlike other "cover/tribute bands", who try to faithfully recreate the original sound and thus stay in the past (which isn't a bad thing if that's what you'rel ooking for), TDN *always* made their own arrangements, putting their own unique spin on songs--and thereby took songs that may not have charted well in their original release and turned them into monster hits.
This is quite possibly the greatest cover band of all time. Definitely check out Nilsson's version...it's tonally very different (more melancholy) but also amazing.
The beginning of JUST AN OLD FASHIONED LOVE SONG used to scare me as a child, the organ was so ominous. One of my favorites. At one time they out sold the BEATLES.
Saw these guys in concert just a few years ago. They sounded AMAZING! Wife had to talk me into going. On the way home I told her she should have listened to me that they were awesome 🙂
These guys used to play so many festivals back in the day, and this song and Eli's Coming were always the highlights for me. What a shame that Chuck had a huge drug problem that got him kicked out of the band, and even bigger shame they never took him back when he got clean.
I was 12 and had no idea we were growing up in such an amazing time for music. All I knew was the radio and the 69 cent 45's at the record shop churned out new stuff week by week that was mesmerizing. I mowed lawns and turned in pop bottles at 2 cents each to buy them. I probably still have several hundred 45's in a case in the basement
Another great lead vocal by Chuck Negron. They had a great band too. TDN and CCR were my sisters favorite bands after the Beatles breakup. Helped us through that period. Please do ‘Out in the Country’

According to Chuck Negron, who took the lead vocal on this song, had a broken nose at the time of the song was recorded and it totally changed the tonal character of his voice on that performance.
I remember in the mid-1970s in high school sitting in my car at the Sonic listening to this on their outdoor speakers. The guys and the girls loved Three Dog Night. 😉
Nice memories growing as a child in the late sixties early seventies, listening to this vinyl of Three Dog Night along with my siblings. I think we all knew every lyric on that album from singing along.
I saw them twice...71 and 73. What everyone needs to understand it that they were a BAND. The musicians were excellent, my favorite being guitarist Michael Allsup. He was really ahead of his time. Listen to "One Man Band" and the use of fuzz and Leslie. The long sustained note at the beginning of the song is epic. They were as good live as they were in the studio.
The great Harry Nilsson wrote this song & recorded it, but Three Dog Night had a huge hit with this. Saw them in concert. They just had hit affer hit. Great concert. I'm a Harry Nilsson fanatic.
I was second row right up front to see them in the early 70’s. That was a great show. The guy that played The Wizard with them was Skip Conte. He and a friend did Ride, Captain, Ride while in Blues Image. It was only one of two acts that I snuck in a camera and got pictures.
Saw them live with Gary Lewis and the Playboys and BTO at a small venue called the Akron Civic Theater. First concert I saw after becoming sober, one I'll never forget!
Spending time with my favorite aunt and smoking a little marijuana and I saw Three Dog Night several times in my life first I was 10 years old and saw them at Johnson Gym here in Albuquerque and last time my brother's band Sassy Jones opened for them here in Albuquerque in my late 20s. As I said my Auntie was my musical influence other then my Dad. She loved Three Dog Night, Hendrix, Janis, CSNY, and so on. My favorite song from them is Chest Fever. When I sang in the Choir church the guy that played the organ would play this song before mass started and the priest. Several great songs Eli's Coming, Try a little tenderness, feeling alright, Heaven is in your mind, Out in the Country, Easy to be Hard and Must let the show go on are just a few. Massive Voices Amazing Band. Enjoy!
I checked out the original Harry Nilsson song "One" and it does stand on it's on. I grew up a big Three Dog Night fan, but the Nilsson version, although different in it's simplicity, is well worth a listen. Three Dog Night, Doobie Brothers, Beatles, etc.. I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s.
