The Guess Who were an excellent band and a ton of songs. No Time is a great choice but American Women might be a great first listen. My favorite is These Eyes.
The production on this song is absolutely Flawless. This is 1971 and done on 12 channel analog. This producer and engineering on this is stellar and the mastering is second to none. AMAZING

RIP Alvin Lee. I have been asking for this for over a year. The song still stands up 50 years later. And he sings while playing some of these leads. You have to see him at Woodstock. He was mostly unknown and blew away the crowd. He plays so fast at times you can't follow his hands, but it isn't shredding, he articulates phrases so cleanly that you hear all of the notes.
In September 1970, Jimi Hendrix sat down for an interview (sadly one of his last) with Melody Maker Magazine to discuss music, drugs, politics, and his plans for a new big band. Shortly into the interview, Roy Hollingsworth, who handled the interview for Melody Maker asked Hendrix the question, "how does it feel the be the greatest guitarist in the world?" To which Hendrix swiftly replied, "I don't know, let me know what Alvin Lee says when you ask him." Taken aback a bit by his answer, Hollingsworth asked Hendrix if he'd care to expand on his answer a bit. Hendrix responded, "I thought I played a pretty decent set at Woodstock considering it was my first time playing live with most of the musicians I played with there." "I thought Johnny Winter & Carlos Santana also played really strong sets there too." "But of the 3+days of music that was played there, nobody outplayed Alvin Lee, and I mean nobody." "Alvin is incredibly gifted in his ability to play jazz, blues, rock, country, or whatever he wants to play." "What styles I know I play well, but Alvin Lee is the most complete guitarist I've ever seen across multiple styles." "He's been a great friend to me, and right now I'm giving him some long overdue reverence." End of statement. That alone says a ton to me about Alvin's ability on a guitar.
The chorus is even deeper, guys. He's being ironic, and he's critiquing the psychology behind individuals who profess to be changing the world, but who are actually leaving it to others -- e.g., politicians.

It is not ironic at all. Lee stated that in interviews. The lyrics are what they are, he loves to change the world, but he does not know how to do that. The verses however, are mostly political and cultural views from capitalists, socialists, hippies. He is basicly saying, if I pick that movement, then that will happen, and stating the negative effect from it. To support his stance, that he has no idea what to do. (or which movement to follow). The ironic part is, that while it is one of the best songs he wrote, he never liked the song. He thought it was leaning way to much to pop music. Hence he never played it live.
@ted ritola well.....the feelings that were birthed in the mid to late sixties weren’t dead by 1971. It’s still a “60’s” song in its sound and intent.....It took a bit longer to kill the vibe of the 60’s.....I still miss that vibe....

Lennon states that we all want to change the world, gives several examples of what not to do, but no examples of what should be done. I am almost 60 yo. I grew up in Norway with this music presented from my 2 older brothers. Ten Years After has always been a part of my childhood and after. Together with Little Feat and Jimi Hendix. True Legends all of those bands 50 years ago. Love from Norway! This song is ICONIC!!!
Changing the world for the better didn’t seem so cheesy 50 years ago. Hopelessness and cynicism (and perhaps reality) has set in and humankind seems hellbent on violence and self-destruction. The music took us away from the Hell then and still does now. Long live rock, I need it every day!

Ten years after is one of my fav bands of all time (70 yr old). Their very early stuff rockin. Songs from their album "Cricklewood Green" is good raw rock& roll.
It was reported that when Jimi Hendrix heard Alvin Lee playing "Goin' Home" at Woodstock, he said he wished that he could play that fast. You guys should really check out that performance.

More Ten Years After,,,absolutely..their albums are incredible..Cricklewood Green, Ssssh...the way Lyons and Lee played off each other...and the drums just complimented their style.
Remember that at this time, the Vietnam war and a deep divide politically affected everything happening around us. So when you decipher lyrics, you have to take that into account. But then again, nothing really changes and the song still resonates today. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🤘
As great as he was with TYA he was even netter later on. Even more polished and mature than in his youth. Take a listen to Can't Stop, Lost In Love and Outside My Window. Masterpieces among many others after TYA.
The boys really nailed that comment about Alvin's effortless guitar playing. Very few Rock guitarists in his time, played as fast and seemingly effortlessly as Alvin Alvin was so fast, so precise and so smooth. When you watched him play on film, he seemed like playing a smoking solo, while intermittently singing, was the most natural thing in the world for him. I love how he would just casually yet confidently walk around stage while looking at the band and the audience and completely shredding at the same time. He moved and played as naturally as you might swing your arms while walking Obviously, he didn't do that all the time, but when he did it, the music and the singing just seemed to flow out of him as naturally as talking does for the rest of us. Sometimes, he Rocked out and other times, he looked like he could shred while reading a novel. He was a total badass on guitar.

I love reactions like this one, the ones that completely surprise you! This song was one of several anthems of that era, each reflecting the groans of an unjust world calling for social change. Other songs along that vein are "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills on lead vocals and Neil Young on guitar), and The Youngbloods' version of "Get Together."
"The Bluest Blues" by Alvin Lee is one of the greatest songs ever. The only problem is once you get lost in it's sauce, you may have a hard time coming back. Epic tune!
Alvin Lee and Rory Gallagher are two of the most underrated guitarists, Listen to any of their stuff and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Alvin’s solo stuff and his work with Ten Years After are both equally impressive, I was fortunate enough to see TYA numerous times back in the 70’s. They were a great live band as you could see by their appearance at Woodstock.
If you guys are going mid 60s you gotta try Lovin Spoonful, Summer in the City. And two by Young Rascals, Groovin and Good Lovin. You can't quantify Vietnam era songs too much!

A while back I discovered Leo Lyons, the bassist in TYA, lived around the corner from me and my Wife kindly got him to sign one of my TYA albums! Of all the places he has lived and worked in the world, he came back to live in his home town. Small world!
Such an amazing song, its mellow and moody, it rocks, its deep, it makes you think, and most of all it just feels good to listen to even after all these years. I always loved the fazed vocal effect in the chorus, and the guitar work speaks for itself. Easy A+ but could just as easily be S.

At last! TYA! No, not cheesy at all. Alvin Lee is just a brilliant guitarist, drawing on a solid jazz/blues background with impeccable technique. He can throw down a thousand notes a second with the best of them (see "Going Home") but also knows how to slow it down. Suggestions: "Sugar The Road", "Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl", "Love Like A Man", "One of These Days". If you want to do a full album reaction, you can't go wrong with Cricklewood Green. Dive in, dudes
I remember hearing this song as a young teen, and I can honestly say that it was a bit of a life changer. I related to its social awareness, the beautifully classic acoustic guitar. the cool phasey vocals on the btidge/chorus, the sublime electric guitar fillls, and finally the effortless virtuosity of the solo guitar, bringing it all back to the winsome but resigned statement to complete a perfect song. It was a song that summarized the 60's, done in a timeless style by an unlikely source.Perfect. Although Ten Years After produced some pretty cool rockers that showcased Alvin Lee and his incredible lead chops, there was never anything else as inspired as this masterpiece in their catalogue.

Due to their performance at Woodstock Ten Years After were for a short time the biggest band in the world. When playing Filmore West circa 1969 a newly formed, up and coming English band opened for them. After that band finished their lead guitarist stood at the side of the stage watching TYA perform. He turned to a roadie next to him and said, Alvin Lee is the only guitarist in the world I'd pay money to see. The up and coming band was called Led Zeppelin- and the guitarist of course, Jimmy Page.

You guys should consider Good Morning Little School Girl - pretty wild and raunchy, especially considering when it was written. I'd Love to Change the World was one of those rare songs where, the first time I heard it, I loved it and it became an instant favorite. I saw Ten Years After in concert twice. Awesome concerts.

I think the effort of finding this music in days of mostly AM radio, buying the record ,unwrapping and reading the lyrics and liner notes as the vinyl played on the turntable all added something to the experience that's hard to measure . Good job boys, all things must pass for us old guys but it's great to see the music live on through fresh ears.

You guys are great. I love your skepticism. I used “I’d love to change the world but...” as my senior quote in 1981 and it seems to have worn reasonably well. At 57 I now say the world is immutable and impenetrable but that should nonetheless not stop us from acting out of our empathy on occasion. Saw Alvin Lee and 10 Years after in the early 70's in Tucson Az. Small Venue, close to the front of the stage, felt like I was in the concert. Lots of fog in the air, plenty of "Whiffs" , and a an exceptionally wonderful concert
Guys! Welcome to the world of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. This song got a fair amount of airplay when it was new. In fact, Alvin Lee was a bit put off by that fact because he was afraid that his music would be perceived as too"commercial".... something he really fought against. TYA had a bunch of albums and this was one of their better known ones because of this song. If you want to get a good idea of what they did I would highly recommend listening to the whole albums "Cricklewood Green" or an album called "Shhhhhh". Both are awesome and phenomenal listening experiences.

No other guitarist can hang on one note... over and over and have it be so meaningful.

@ted ritola well.....the feelings that were birthed in the mid to late sixties weren’t dead by 1971. It’s still a “60’s” song in its sound and intent.....It took a bit longer to kill the vibe of the 60’s.....I still miss that vibe....

I would say this song put an end to the 60's vibe and all it's intents. I'm sorry but this song was about putting an end to the 60's and ushering in the attitudes of the 70's.
@@paulthomas1089 If this song had been released in 1968 it would not have sounded out of place. Look at the Beatles "Revolution" (1968). Lennon states that we all want to change the world, gives several examples of what not to do, but no examples of what should be done.

I am almost 60 yo. I grew up in Norway with this music presented from my 2 older brothers. Ten Years After has always been a part of my childhood and after. Together with Little Feat and Jimi Hendix. True Legends all of those bands 50 years ago. Love from Norway!

Changing the world for the better didn’t seem so cheesy 50 years ago. Hopelessness and cynicism (and perhaps reality) has set in and humankind seems hellbent on violence and self-destruction. The music took us away from the Hell then and still does now. Long live rock, I need it every day!
Too true....it was the Age of Aquarius and anything was possible. Our collective will moved mountains and stopped a war. Some might call it naive, but I'd rather be from our generation than any since WW2. When I look at how liberals have de-evolved to the violent, anti-free speech cancel culture they wallow in, it makes me physically ill. Give me the 60's any day....kids today have no idea just how sweet those days were.

Being an old hippie, my interpretation of this song is that too many people leave it up to others to do the work and don’t realize that if all of us were to look at ourselves in the mirror and then commit to making a change, even in a small way, collectively we actually could change the world for the better. Alex, the song We Are the World’ that you think is cheesy did raise millions of dollars to feed starving Africans and made a real difference. ✌️

Ten years after is one of my fav bands of all time (70 yr old). Their very early stuff rockin. Songs from their album "Cricklewood Green" is good raw rock& roll.

It was reported that when Jimi Hendrix heard Alvin Lee playing "Goin' Home" at Woodstock, he said he wished that he could play that fast. You guys should really check out that performance.

More Ten Years After,,,absolutely..their albums are incredible..Cricklewood Green, Ssssh...the way Lyons and Lee played off each other...and the drums just complimented their style.
Ten Years After ' Rock And Roll Music To THe World' blows even that song out of the water.
Remember that at this time, the Vietnam war and a deep divide politically affected everything happening around us. So when you decipher lyrics, you have to take that into account.
But then again, nothing really changes and the song still resonates today.

Alvin Lee in his prime was one of the best guitarists on the planet...
As great as he was with TYA he was even netter later on. Even more polished and mature than in his youth. Take a listen to Can't Stop, Lost In Love and Outside My Window. Masterpieces among many others after TYA.
The boys really nailed that comment about Alvin's effortless guitar playing. Very few Rock guitarists in his time, played as fast and seemingly effortlessly as Alvin
Alvin was so fast, so precise and so smooth. When you watched him play on film, he seemed like playing a smoking solo, while intermittently singing, was the most natural thing in the world for him.
I love how he would just casually yet confidently walk around stage while looking at the band and the audience and completely shredding at the same time. He moved and played as naturally as you might swing your arms while walking
Obviously, he didn't do that all the time, but when he did it, the music and the singing just seemed to flow out of him as naturally as talking does for the rest of us. Sometimes, he Rocked out and other times, he looked like he could shred while reading a novel. He was a total badass on guitar.
Now you know why it was requested so much!!! One of my favorite songs.

I love reactions like this one, the ones that completely surprise you! This song was one of several anthems of that era, each reflecting the groans of an unjust world calling for social change. Other songs along that vein are "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills on lead vocals and Neil Young on guitar), and The Youngbloods' version of "Get Together."

"The Bluest Blues" by Alvin Lee is one of the greatest songs ever. The only problem is once you get lost in it's sauce, you may have a hard time coming back. Epic tune!

Alvin Lee and Rory Gallagher are two of the most underrated guitarists, Listen to any of their stuff and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Alvin’s solo stuff and his work with Ten Years After are both equally impressive, I was fortunate enough to see TYA numerous times back in the 70’s. They were a great live band as you could see by their appearance at Woodstock.
My all time favorite is Peter Green with both John Mayall & the original Fleetwood Mac!
If you guys are going mid 60s you gotta try Lovin Spoonful, Summer in the City. And two by Young Rascals, Groovin and Good Lovin. You can't quantify Vietnam era songs too much!

A while back I discovered Leo Lyons, the bassist in TYA, lived around the corner from me and my Wife kindly got him to sign one of my TYA albums! Of all the places he has lived and worked in the world, he came back to live in his home town. Small world!
Such an amazing song, its mellow and moody, it rocks, its deep, it makes you think, and most of all it just feels good to listen to even after all these years. I always loved the fazed vocal effect in the chorus, and the guitar work speaks for itself. Easy A+ but could just as easily be S.
As a very young child when I heard this on the radio and heard Alvin Lee playing those soaring guitar leads, I instantly fell in love with the electric guitar! Have never been the same since😎🎸

At last! TYA! No, not cheesy at all. Alvin Lee is just a brilliant guitarist, drawing on a solid jazz/blues background with impeccable technique. He can throw down a thousand notes a second with the best of them (see "Going Home") but also knows how to slow it down. Suggestions: "Sugar The Road", "Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl", "Love Like A Man", "One of These Days". If you want to do a full album reaction, you can't go wrong with Cricklewood Green. Dive in, dudes
Probably my favorite for the era. It captures life as it was seen by most hippies at the time. The guitar and vocals are killer, in my opinion.
I remember hearing this song as a young teen, and I can honestly say that it was a bit of a life changer. I related to its social awareness, the beautifully classic acoustic guitar. the cool phasey vocals on the btidge/chorus, the sublime electric guitar fillls, and finally the effortless virtuosity of the solo guitar, bringing it all back to the winsome but resigned statement to complete a perfect song. It was a song that summarized the 60's, done in a timeless style by an unlikely source.Perfect.
Although Ten Years After produced some pretty cool rockers that showcased Alvin Lee and his incredible lead chops, there was never anything else as inspired as this masterpiece in their catalogue.

Due to their performance at Woodstock Ten Years After were for a short time the biggest band in the world. When playing Filmore West circa 1969 a newly formed, up and coming English band opened for them. After that band finished their lead guitarist stood at the side of the stage watching TYA perform. He turned to a roadie next to him and said, Alvin Lee is the only guitarist in the world I'd pay money to see.
The up and coming band was called Led Zeppelin- and the guitarist of course, Jimmy Page.

You guys should consider Good Morning Little School Girl - pretty wild and raunchy, especially considering when it was written. I'd Love to Change the World was one of those rare songs where, the first time I heard it, I loved it and it became an instant favorite. I saw Ten Years After in concert twice. Awesome concerts.

I think the effort of finding this music in days of mostly AM radio, buying the record ,unwrapping and reading the lyrics and liner notes as the vinyl played on the turntable all added something to the experience that's hard to measure . Good job boys, all things must pass for us old guys but it's great to see the music live on through fresh ears.

You guys are great. I love your skepticism. I used “I’d love to change the world but...” as my senior quote in 1981 and it seems to have worn reasonably well. At 57 I now say the world is immutable and impenetrable but that should nonetheless not stop us from acting out of our empathy on occasion. Anyway I have watched your videos for a while and love them. Please do Humble Pie I Don’t Need No Doctor from Rock’n The Fillmore and let me know of this is a good song for my funeral. Thanks.

Saw Alvin Lee and 10 Years after in the early 70's in Tucson Az. Small Venue, close to the front of the stage, felt like I was in the concert.

Guys! Welcome to the world of Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. This song got a fair amount of airplay when it was new. In fact, Alvin Lee was a bit put off by that fact because he was afraid that his music would be perceived as too"commercial".... something he really fought against. TYA had a bunch of albums and this was one of their better known ones because of this song. If you want to get a good idea of what they did I would highly recommend listening to the whole albums "Cricklewood Green" or an album called "Shhhhhh". Both are awesome and phenomenal listening experiences.
