Thanks so much for watching!
I was into the franchise beyond the films.
The video games:Die Hard for Turbografx-16 (1990) was awesome.
Die Hard:Vendetta (2002) on Xbox was dope and was considered the 4th story after the original trilogy.
A limited comic series, Die Hard:Year One (2009-2010) from BOOM! Studios about John McClane as an rookie cop in the 1970s which almost became the 4th film.
Here's a suggestion, if you haven't seen it: *Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan* (1982). After a slow start it becomes an excellent thriller, and it has some iconic lines.
(The previous movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), is notoriously slow.)
Fun fact, when they were dropping Alan Rickman's character, the directors told him that they would drop him on 3 and instead they dropped him on 1. So his reaction is 100% genuine.
It's amazing how they played it in slo-mo so you can really feel his genuine fear too! Thanks for sharing!
Double fun fact: Him listing off facts of Mr Takagi wasn't in the script. He adlibbed the whole thing. Dude was a treasure.
Also this was his first film!
Would love it if they released the footage of his reaction after his reaction. You know where he would be like "you fuckers".
Oh yeah they would have to bleep everything he said though lol!
I forget his name, but apparently the writer of the movie got the idea for John and Holly's relationship/argument being the heart of the story, because he was so stressed out from trying to write a compelling story he got in a fight with his own wife, went for a drive to cool off, and was so steamed he didn't notice a big refrigerator box in the middle of the road. So according to him it was too late to turn, so either it was empty or he was gonna wreck, and his only thought was "I REALLY don't want that to be the last thing I said to my wife."
Wow, that's crazy! I'll look into that story
Women... can't live with them, can't live without... am I right fellas??😏😏
It's unfortunate that few Die Hard fans are aware of the brilliance and athleticism of Alexander Godunov ("the blond guy") as a dancer. He was a star principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet and his dramatic defection from the Soviet Union in 1979 was big news at the time. He died much too young at age 45, a mere 7 years after Die Hard was released. There are videos of his ballet performances on UA-cam that are well worth checking out.
I was amazed at how funny he was in The Money Pit... the guy had comic timing as well. He was a compelling actor that we lost too soon.
Wasn’t he in Mission: Impossible?
@@connor48880 Nope. Godunov died in May 1995. Although the first Mission: Impossible was in production at the time, he wasn't in it. M:I was released in '96.
@@maisiesummers42 it was the actor that played his brother, Andreas Wisniewski
I was slightly off in a VERY important aspect
It's because most people who watch action movies are men, and most are normal, and we don't dig ballet or whatever.
When I was in college working on my music degree, I was part of an avant-garde improvisational ensemble at my university, and a few years after I graduated they invited my band who are all ex members back, to join them in a Christmas concert where we projected Die Hard as a silent film, and we improvised an underscore. We made sure to kind of pass back and forth the ode to Joy motif that's present throughout the movie, and when the vault was opened we all played a very chaotic version of the theme, but otherwise it was all improvised for the whole film. Whole film. It's one of my favorite performance memories.
Sounds like a blast😀 do you have any recordings of it? You could upload them to YT, it would be fun to see Die Hard with different soundtracks.
@@minnie21434 We never published any recordings. I may have a 2-hour long FLAC of it somewhere, although trying to sync it up with the movie would not be easy either
Also, I love how William Atherton was the go to guy to play the self-serving jerk during the 80s, appearing in films like Ghostbusters and Real Genius.
The fact that, like you say, this Alan Rickman's film debut, and yet the second you see him he has such presence. You know immediately he's in charge from how he's presented, how he carries himself, and that he isn't carrying anything. Everyone else is carrying things FOR him.
I mean, this was his film debut, but the man had a fairly brilliant career on the stage behind him. And nothing is better for teaching an actor how to have presence than live theater. On a stage you just can't fake it and there's no second chances.
@@itzakpoelzig330 Yes, the reason Hollywood keeps importing British actors is because of the craft they have acquired from drama schools and stage experience.
and I just want some Robin Hood sheriff comedy
Plus, Has Gruber is one of, if not the, best movie villains. One year he beat out the Grinch for the best holiday villain in an online poll.
If you're wondering why the Fox logo at the beginning looks oddly stretched, it's because it was intentionally done so. McTiernan wasn't allowed to shoot Predator in anamorphic to save costs. When he shot Die Hard in anamorphic, he used the non-anamorphic version of the Fox logo and stretched it to look ugly to stick it to Fox.
What lol really? That's amazing. I've always wondered about that.
This is really funny
I mean, props to Fox for going with it and not quietly "fixing" it in later releases
Been watching you guys forever, just gotta say your guy's energy and joy for movies makes it so fun. Thanks for all the good times.
I know for me personally, don't worry about watching movies that nether of you have seen. Even if it's something one of you have seen, it's just fun watching you guys watching movies.
Fun fact: the comment that John could be a bartender for all they knew is referring to Willis’ being one prior to his breakout role in this movie.
As the wonderful Cinema Therapy channel said, this movie is essentially a Christmas romance-rekindling movie between John and Holly. Oh, and it also happens to be one of the best action movies ever made.
Yes and her name is Holly. Might as well be Holly Snowflake
I saw this at 14 (88) with my dad. ONLY TIME we came out a theatre and said “That was the best action movie I ever seen…” Trust me, that said A LOT.
My mom allegedly had a friend who was in the area while this was being filmed. I don't know the full backstory, but he had a walkie talkie and was able to get on their frequency, figured out they were filming a movie, and kept calling "Cut!" at random parts ti where someine had to say "Okay, who keeps calling cut?"
This was Alan's Rickman first moive ever ❤❤
Every year me and the wife do a Christmas Eve double bill: Muppets Christmas Carol followed by Die Hard. Always the best.
Its not christmas untill Hans Gruber falls of the Nakatomi Plaza!
Not sure if this was mentioned, but the actor that had candy in lobby improved that moment. He was supposed to die sooner in the movie but because of his improv with the candy, the director bumped him being killed off later on in the movie.
My guess is that for many people outside the United States, this is, was, and has always been a Christmas Movie, due to the fact that in many countries it didn't open in July.
In my country this opened late in October, and ran in theatres all through Christmas - thus it is without any doubt a Christmas Movie!
The movie is based on the 1979 novel, NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, which is a sequel to the 1966 novel THE DETECTIVE which was turned into a Frank Sinatra movie in 1968. In the book, he's called Joe Leland and not John McClane, and Holly was actually his daughter and not his wife. The novel's ending was a lot darker, as Leland shoots Gruber in the chest, but Gruber grabs Holly by the neck of her sweater, where they both fall to their deaths.
Leland becomes devastated by his loss.
While being loaded into an ambulance, Karl survives and begins to shoot his M-60 machine gun into the crowd, killing various reporters, while Powell fires an M-16 at Karl, successfully kiling him. But one of the bullet's from Karl's gun hits Leland in the thigh, where he's loaded into an Ambulance, but dies of his injury on the way to the hospital.
That does NOT sound like a Christmas story.
It´s not Christmas until a british actor playing a german terrorist falls of an american building owned by a japanese man.....god, movies are great
@ 16:52: "He could be a fucking bartender for all we know." Inside joke as Bruce Willis was a bartender before hitting it big in "Moonlighting."
It's a total Christmas movie. Set at Christmas, Christmas songs, Christmas decorations and presents. What more do you want? 😂😂
You guys are reading my mind or what. I was going to rewatch that movie tonight, but hey I got your reaction instead which is infinitely better.
Alan Rickman came up with the idea for the scene where Hans and John meet and Hans puts on an American accent. They put it in the film because of his idea. He had impeccable instincts as an actor. The same about him being in a suit, instead of in terrorist gear, and helping himself to a sandwich from the Christmas buffet.
I love how he's told to type in Holly's name so he knows where to go only to follow up with "30th floor, they're the last ones in the building" Oh, OK, couldn't have just said party's on floor 30 then!
even if yall have seen the movie, i still love watching/listening to yall's takes and seeing your reations
The ambulance van at the end was to fix a plothole. (Notice it was not in the truck when our bad guys emerge). But this perfect plan had no exit strategy, so the screenplay had to add the van scene in the parking garage. (This would have been how our villains escape)
Such a sweet shoutout to RedLetterMedia at the end!
The cop talking to John played a cop in almost every movie he was in like GHOSTBUSTERS, TURNER AND HOOCH, both DIE HARD 1 & 2 & he played a Chicago cop in the comedy tv show FAMILY MATTERS
It's not Christmas until Hans drops.
Fun fact they didn’t tell Alan Rickman when they were gonna drop him in that scene
That face he makes is genuine, and I think afterwards he was pretty pissed at the directors
Other fun fact, speaking of dropping.
The scene when he’s in the ventilation shaft and he drops, he was supposed to grab onto the first vent, but the stunt double missed it and grabbed onto another one, which is the shot they kept in the movie
YIPPEE KI YAY HANS
@@NiceDudeMovieNight Fun fact that was a blooper that somehow made it into the movie...
The scene where the henchman grabs the candy was also improvised and I love that so much
Truly the best Christmas movie ever! Stay nice dudes!
One of my favorite Bruce Willis movies that doesn't get much love is Hudson Hawk. It is not serious. It is a lark. You get to see Willis' whimsical side like his Moonlighting character. The plot is kinda cheesy but that's what makes it enjoyable to me. I especially love how he and his partner keep sync by singing old tunes.
It was a Christmas movie when it was 1st released so many years ago & it's still a Christmas movie. I always do a Die Hard marathon at Christmas
I don't know how often I watched that movie until I finally noticed a very small, but important detail. Karl, the big long-haired blond guy? When McLane wraps him up with the chain, he manages to get a hand between the chain and his throat. He probably got just knocked out when he hit the wall, but he didn't choke. While the timing is tight for him to wake up, free himself and leave the roof after the hostages ran past him, it's not impossible.
4:38 Truly amazing I have heard in a video and you can see it yourself: the blonde haired badguy is the same actor who playes 'Necros" in The Living Daylights..He playes in 2 of my favorite movies a similar role.
The Fox Plaza! I used to work in this building and it always reminded me of Die Hard when I went to work.
This is one of the greatest films of all time and I will stand by that
The second one is kinda meh but the third one is absolutely fantastic because Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Freakin' Jackson are great together
Never seen the other two and have no real desire to honestly
We'd love to check out the sequels in the future!
"They didn't call me Jesus they said HEY ZEUS. Like Greek god of thunder? Don't FUCK with me motherfucker or I'll shove a lightning bolt up your ass."
I love love love the third film so much. I can't say it's better than the first, because that's blasphemy, but it's darn close.
The 4th Die Hard is pretty good. It's not as legendary as the first and third films, but it's still very, very solid. As a Die-hard fan, I highly recommend it
The 5th Die Hard is a fucking garbage. Don't waste your time on this piece of shit
@@ТимурНазаров-с5иHow does 4 compare with 2?
Oh, did not know this was Rickman's film debut. Thanks Nice Dudes!
I like to think of this movie as a prequel to Family Matters. Al had to go into FBI protective services with his wife after killing Karl. Fittingly, Al became Carl Winslow, never forgetting the man he shot. His wife was pregnant with Eddie. This is why he was never in any of the sequels.
I just recently saw "long-haired blond dude" when rewatching The Money Pit.
Not only is it a movie taking place around a christmas party with all of the trappings, but the plot is at its core straight up Christmas standard.
Start with a couple whose marriage is on the rocks, in large part because of the husband's failure to appreciate his wife.
Both encounter an adverse outside event.
The husband has to overcome the adversity in order to heal his marriage and in the end the family is reunited and walks away together m
But John doesn't change or do anything to fix his relationship. They are just bonded by trauma.
If you need more Bruce Willis kicking ass at Christmas, RED is a delight
I've never thought about it before but its kinda funny to imagine they put Karl in the body bag with a gun, without checking pulse.
Best alternate line read in another show: Boyle in Brooklyn 99 - Yippie kiyay mother buckets
Guys, i have to say that you just revived my interest in films?
my nana was an amazing woman, an accomplished physicist, and an absolute cunt (in a good way)
but what she loved was 80s films, and her sheer enjoyment of them was a thing to behold! this one, the pilots parody (where he fries an egg on a woman's belly?), the total recall one, u name it - she loved them!
she died 2 years ago from cancer and i recently discovered her dvd collection of flicks i burned when i was at school and after a good cry a put one up and
lets say i cannot watch them alone but your love for film made it a lil bit more bearable.
so thank you.
Great reaction! It is very interesting to see your reaction to the film Robocop 1987. This is a cool movie 👍🔥🦾
i can't believe you guys didn't notice, one of the vilains is the vilain of Ghostbusters 2
Loved this!!
Oh shit I didn’t know this was Rickmans FIRST FILM, talking about starting off with a bang holy crap he kills it
I love this movie from 1988
Also, did you know that the filmographer of this gorgeously shot movie, Jan de Bont, made five movies with Paul Verhoeven (only one of them in Hollywood)? My layman's eye notices similarities in the dynamics and the visual language between Die Hard and Verhoeven's Hollywood films.
I wonder if that Verhoeven's touch was suggested by Jan de Bont who worked with Verhoeven in Netherlands and continud to do so in Hollywood.
i still remember when i first saw those Nestle Crunch bars for sale in Canada ( i think the mid 90s), i recognized them from somewhere but couldn't remember where, then saw this movie again, and it hit ....still one of my favourite bars ever
It's funny cause Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, and Beverly Hills Cop all take place around the same time in the same state. So the LAPD does have some action cops lol
I remember when they drop Hans Gruber in the end "Alan Rickman" in the end he was not ready for it so the reaction is real.
When the rooftop blows up with the helicopter it's a model set
I totally agree,it’s a Christmas movie. I watch this and Lampoons Christmas and Home Alone in the Christmas season.
I already love rewatch. More depth, more talking. More, please
1:30....definitely a loving christmas movie !!
I wanted this so bad, classic Christmas, might as well watch the trilogy
Altaf, before I ever saw this movie I had always assumed there was more reason for the great Christmas movie debate. But the first time i watched it it was so clearly a Christmas movie I didn't understand the issue
One of my favorite edits is from a version of Die Harder... Yippee Ki Yea *my friend*
22:16 the one thing I like about this part is how Ellis says John is his friend and not there for someone else.
Come down to the coast get together few laughs brilliant line
The long haired blonde dude as you column I believe it's Mikhail baryshnikov The Russian ballet dancer
Fun rewatch reaction.
Masterpiece of a movie.
I definitely watch this one every Christmas. 2 less so, but it is also a Christmas film.
I just watched it in a theatre the other day!
My favourite scene from die hard is vent scene
You're not wrong!
I forgot there was so much humour in that movie ! 👍
I HAVE tried "fists with your toes" and it really does work. :)
Great! This is an interesting movie! I would also really like to see your detailed reaction to the cult film Robocop! Especially after the release of a new world game based on this movie. Do you have any plans to make a reaction to this film?🔥
Best Arcguyle in cinema history.
You guys should definitely watch The Money Pit. It's a great Tom Hanks comedy, and it has "Karl" in a larger role.
The incredible part of that elevator shaft stumt was the stuntman was supposed to catch the first ventilation shaft opening but caught the second. McTiernan left the scene in the movie because, let’s face it, it’s more badass.
My favorite Xmas movie.
- I thought "Yipee Kay Yeay MR. FALCON" was the GO TO "clean" version of that line 😄
- In defense of Ellis, even though that man was an 80s assh*le yuppie, ON COKE, he STILL had the wherewithal to NOT throw Holly under the bus & rat her out to Hans. So, 25% decent guy.
- Beautiful Blonde Carl can also be found in the hilarious 80s comedy, THE MONEY PIT, and of course the dude with the pony tail is Vigo from GHOSTBUSTERS 2.
- In the most recent RICK & MORTY, Rick does the "HANS!" scream... to the Pope. I'm trying to remember if THIS may have been the first instance of screaming your villain's name? 🤔
Surely The Wrath of Khan was earlier? Though I suspect there may be many even earlier examples.
@@itzakpoelzig330 These nice guys need to react to Star Trek II !
To those who say this isn't a Christmas movie, i say "well, what makes Home Alone a Christmas movie?" (They are almost the same in terms of Christmas references and story.)
Nothing; it's not.
Extraordinary movie!
Honestly, I wanna move the debate from Die Hard to Lethal Weapon. Both take place around Christmas in California.
Classic Christmas movie
the facts that Marvel made a what if version of this move confirms that DIEHARD IS Christmas movie ! Nuff said !
Is a Christmas movie just a movie that takes place at Christmas, or is it a movie centered on Christmas themes (forgiveness and redemption)? Because if it's the first one, then Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut definitely qualifies.
Even if someone's definition is the second I would say this still qualifies. John redeems himself to Holly by showing that he cares and will fight for her no matter what and she forgives him.
2 opposing opinions.
A) this is a Christmas movie. Not because of the date, but because it's about trying to visit family and everything goes horribly wrong.
B) this is about running around a tower avoiding Alan Rickman. It's not a Christmas movie, it's a Harry Potter movie
Can you two just watch all the Die hard movies now?? None are really bad but most are pretty good
"Jesus Christ Powell!! He could be a fucking bartender for all we know!!" - Well, as a struggling actor, Bruce Willis did indeed that.
Sleepless at Nakatomi Plaza
#2 Xmas movie of all time! Die Hard 2 is #1.
You gotta Watch Hudson Hawk! Thats so bad its good and of this era Bruce Willis
this is not A christmas movie, it is THE christmas movie :D
i mean Bruce Willis stated this wasnt a charismas movie xD cant argue with John Mclane himself
a rewatch... it had to happen eventually
Best Xmas movie EVER!!! 😇
Bruce Willis said it's not a Christmas movie but the screenwriter says yes. I trust more the screenwriter than the actor. :)
Allen Rickman is the best at playing the villain. Die Hard, Quigley Down Under, Robin Hood Prince of Theives
28:23 Is this a reference to Police Academy?
Yippie Kai Aye Mr Falcoln!!!
Yippee-ki-yay mr falcon
the debate comes down to this: There are Christmas movies and there are movies set during Christmas
Explain the difference.
@@Konoshy Best example I can give: The Polar Express compared to Jurassic World.
