RIP Bubba Smith aka Hughtower, Marion Ramsay aka Hooks, David Graf aka Tackleberry, and George Gaines aka Eric Lassard. They made this the funniest action comedy movies ever made.
For Winslow, they actually found him while he was performing stand up while in production for the film. When Michael grabbed a bullhorn on stage to replace his mic after the power went out and started doing sound effects they decided they NEEDED to have him in the film and wrote his part in after the fact.
He wasn't unknown at the time (not that anybody said he was). I'd seen him previously in a Cheech & Chong movie and in an episode of "The White Shadow," so I knew what his special skill was, and was glad to see him get some high-level recognition in these movies.
@@DelGuy03l love that scene in Cheech and Chong the next movie when there’s him doing his sounds while an old man is laughing at the heroin junkie who keeps falling a sleep with a lit cigarette in his hand.
He did a scene in 6, City Under Siege, where he did a gag of that stand up routine. The club in the scene had lost power and he had to pacify the crowd.
A little extra thing for you guys. During the shooting range scene notice everyone but the gun-nut Tackleberry ducks??? That is because he knows firearms so well the knew that the pump action shotgun wasn't loaded because he had not racked a new shell into the chamber thus meaning the gun was not "hot" or dangerous until he reloaded. Amazingly fine detail to get right for a comedy movie
Bubba Smith, Hightower, was truly a large man. He was a 6'7" 265 pound defensive end who played for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Oilers after he played for Michigan state.
Michael Winslow went into retirement for his kids after becoming a widower. He recently returned to stage decades later for America’s Got Talent, as I recall.
Hightower is played by Bubba Smith, who was a football player for the (then Baltimore) Colts. My dad loooooved that guy and while he probably would have seen it anyway, he definitely wanted to see him when he saw this.
Not only was he a football player, but Bubba Smith was also the number one pick in the 1967 NFL Draft. He was an excellent player until his knees gave out.
Michael Winslow was a stand-up comedian. One night, the electricity went out (as did the microphone), so Michael started doing all his sound effects as improv. The writers (or producers) of Police Academy were in the audience and knew they had to write a character for Winslow. And, the actress who played Hooks had been in a musical - Michael Jackson came backstage to meet the cast - and she decided to do an impression of Michael for her Hooks audition. :) I'm a lifelong fan of Police Academy.
I like how every single person in the world would say "Hey, that's the guy from Police Academy", but you two guys say "Hey, that's the guy from Spaceballs". Love your videos, ya'll a bunch of nice dudes!
-"He's so shellshocked he just can't even drive..." -"I thought he was just an oblivious old man..." Actually, you're both right! If you get the chance, watch the sequels. The commandant's character is a highlight in many of them!
Neat little detail at 14:01 : Note how everyone ducked and covered when Leslie turned the gun their way. With the noticeable exception of Tackleberry, who knew that the gun wasn't pumped.
The 80s was the peak decade for the great George Gaynes who made Commandant Lassard so wonderful. He was born in Finland and served in the Royal Netherlands Navy during WWII, but had no trace of any accent other than purely American. He was also an accomplished singer. Everything he appeared in was made better by his presence and his comedic skills were priceless.
Wow, I never knew any of those things about that actor. Thank you for sharing. I just remember him from these movies and the T.V. sitcom "Punky Brewster."
Honestly I sympathize with Harris in this film with the kinds of recruits he has to train to be actual cops and Mahoney's constant antics to get thrown out only for him to suddenly pull a 180 and want to stay.
I kinda wish they had him be a lot cooler to them (but still kind of a dick) like Callahan, since he was really just doing what Hearst wanted. But he just turned out to be a petty ass by the time they brought him back in 4.
@@inarar5334 Yeah, but by the end of part 7, it was implied that Harris, more or less, stopped being a dick towards the gang. So maybe even he got some degree of character development.
@@JadedFPSFan oh, absolutely, I definitely had forgotten that part but as soon as you said it, I was like "ooooooh yeah." Might be where I even got the idea.
Bubba Smith (playing Hightower) was an NFL-player (played Defensive End) before he became an actor, in fact he was the 1 overall pick in the 1967 draft and played for 10 seasons and won one super bowl with the Colts (Baltimore).
I miss these old-school comedies where you had an ensemble of various characters doing all sorts of wacky things. The Cannonball Run movies were great for that too.
I love that when Leslie fires the shotgun and turns it towards everyone, Tackleberry is the only one who doesn’t suck because he hadn’t racked another round yet and he knew it wasn’t a threat. Just a perfect little detail for the gun nut character in my opinion
I remember liking the 2nd and 3rd one even more than the first one. Maybe the 4ht one was fine as well, don't remember that one much though. But once Guttenberg wasn't there anymore it went downhill.
@@The_RedVIII They kind of start running together for me to be honest, it's been a long time but I would say that 2 is the peak for me personally. Bobcat Goldthwaite for the win.

One of the greatest comedy series ever and a classic for a reason! You see, it is not only about the slapstick comedy scenes, it is also about the characters! A brunch of outsiders working hard to reach a goal which they never thought to achieve, everybody with special character traits they can bring in, and they become real friends as the series continues. Fun fact about Hooks: Bubba Smith (Hightower) said in an interview, that the actress got the loudest voice he ever heard and she really had to hold back for the role 😂 RIP to all actors who passed away, thank you for every time you made me laugh!
6:39 Film Fun Fact: The scene in which Copeland and Blankes had their hair shaved off was already shot at the beginning. The scenes where everyone arrives at the beginning of the film were shot later. Since the two now had shaved hair, they had to wear wigs. 🙂
I'm really enjoying your reactions, especially the fact, that you never see all these old movies like police academy, ghostbusters, starship troopers or naked gun. Thats so refreshing. These movies were a big part of my childhood and I can still repeat every line from memory. :D So, thanks guys
Funfact. They did not look specificly for a sound effect guy. This actor simply showed up one day, shocked them with his talents and they changed the script to create this character for him.
In the shotgun training scene, notice everyone ducks except Tackleberry. Not because he's crazy, but because he's a gun nut and knows the shotgun can't fire again because a shell hasn't been racked again and therefor he is in no danger. A friend pointed that out to me a while back.
I met Michael Winslow in the 90s. I was working at a pizza restaurant that had a comedy club in it. We had michael as an act one weekend. He came in the kitchen and BSd with us. He was super cool. His show was awsome too.
If you can get to see Michael Winslow at a comicon panel, don't miss it. He can do all that stuff live. I saw him a few years ago and it was the funniest panel I have ever seen, He was in two Cheech and Chong movies, before Police Academy. His Jimi Hendrix impression is unbelievable.
G.W. Bailey (Harris) was also Staff Sergeant Luther Rizzo on M.A.S.H. and George Gaynes (The Commandant) played Henry Warnimont on Punky Brewster. Both are amazing actors, saddly George Gaynes pasted away in 2016.
There's a funny story surrounding Hooks character and the voice. The actress imitated Michael Jackson who was huge in the 80s already. And apparently I've heard from the stories about the movie being made is that Michael Jackson didn't like it one bit about his voice being imitated that way lmao😂😂😂😂😂😂

This is one of many movies me and my group of young teenager friends watched on rented tapes over and over. I can still remember it all today 39 years later. So many of those funny actors are gone now. RIP to them all.
I used to watch it ALL the time when Blockbuster and co. were still a thing, it´s the first non horror movie franchise i remember that went up to 7 entries and of course Larvel Jones aka Michael Winslow was one of my favorites as a kid! later followed characters like Hightower, Mahoney, Callahan and Tackleberry Such a great nostalgic feel good movie and great job getting sponsored money now guys!

one of my favorite little bits is at 14:00 when he turns around with the shotgun, the only one who doesn't duck is the gun nut who knows you have to pump the shotgun before it can fire again
Aaah man, I loved these movies as a kid. Used to watch them whenever they were on TV. I see now that there were certain parts I did not understand and why my mom was not a fan of her 5 year old watching these with her dad.
Omg yesss I can't believe you guys are watching one of my favorite franchises of all time, all the characters are so funny and unique! I watch it at least once a year. Yayy! My Monday just got a heck of a lot better! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Please watch the 2nd and the 3rd one and I'd say the 4th one too! They are hilarious too! (Just watch the 5th one too lol)
Police Academy is such a fun series. I have to say the 2nd (introduction to Zed) and the 4th are probably my top favorites and definitely recommend the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th films in the future. 5 and 6 are decent, with 6th having a few memorable scenes. Which may be partially due to growing up with the 6th film before discovering the others. I see a few comments about Winslow during a power outage, ironically he does a similar scene in the 6th film.
I wish they still made movies like they did back in the day …. All these awesome movies you react to …. I grew up watching…. Seen them all in theatres…
Great reaction i love the Police Academy movies. I was born in 1980 i first saw this when i was 7, and i loved the following 5 sequels which came out each year after showing how many of the characters develop. The less said about the final film the better lol, the only good thing i can say is that the 5 regulars in that one did okay, but it needed more rather than relying on so many new characters.
I haven't seen this movie in like 15 years and yet I remember all the names of the characters. It is really one of those classics that they would refuse to make today.
Winslows character wasn't even in the original script. One of the filmmakers saw him do stand-up and was like "we need this guy" and just kinda jammed him in there. Once you notice that Jones can be taken out and it barely changes the movie its kinda obvious.
@@NiceDudeMovieNightoh, definitely but the vast majority of his stuff is just him doing individual bits (like the "video game" thing, or when he gets knocked down the stairs because Fackler is clumsy).
Oh wow funny, same day and same reaction as Mary Cherry. Loved this movie as a kid btw. Still fun. I think I actually liked some of the sequels even more.
Huge chunks of this and the series were filmed in Toronto. I've been to the bar that stood in as The Blue Oyster, the Riot breaking out where the mob chases after the first guy going down the street, that's Kensington Market. Other scenes filmed in other locations. Like the Old Zoo in Part 2, no idea where that was filmed.
Marion Ramsey, the actress who played Hooks actually wore padding under her uniform to appear bigger. She was actually pretty attractive in real life. She passed away in 2021 after a short illness.
One of my favorite comedies . I grew up watching them with my cousins and we always had a blast. You guys should do at least the first 4 movies. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽great video like always 😊😊
It's hard to believe this series hasn't been rebooted yet! Maybe it's for the best. This was on TV all the time in the 90s they even had an animated series. The movies vary in quality but I have fond memories nonetheles!
14:03 fun fact. Most people think that the reason Tackleberry didn't duck was that he is just that bad ass... the truth is Tackleberry was a Marine and he knew the shotgun was non functional because Barbara didn't pump it to load a new shell. So the weapon could not be fired and thus was perfectly safe.
7:38 “I love how the nerdy white guy…everything he touches turns into a slapstick comedy” …well… funny you should mention that with what we now know to be the climax of the film….hahahahahaha
I love how even though Lassard is typically sort of bumbling and clueless, he's got his moments. Perfect fit with the recruits. The part about him pondering over saving Harris is him acknowledging how much of a jerk Harris is. The rest of the series has plenty of fun moments. The movies are really good for movie night movies. As some other commenters point out, the Cannonball Run movies might be something you can have fun with. Parts 1 and 2. Bonus features there is the opening theme is sung by Ray Stevens, it is somewhat based on the real race, and the first movie was Jackie Chan's first American movie.
14:03 , you'll notice that the guy did not flinch when the gun was aimed at him while everyone else ducked down. Because of his love and knowledge of firearms, he knows that the guy did not pump the shell and rack a new one in the pump-action shotgun, essentially, the barrel still has an empty shell and he's safer for it.
Police Academy is fascinating as a FRANCHISE because the box office and budget for each film follows a perfect curve. They made the first 6 of these /annually/ every March through the 80s...and then they went on to have almost no relevence.
I loved this movie when growing up. Would love to see you 2 do one of the Ernest movies. Like Ernest goes to camp or Ernest goes to jail. You guys are so fun to watch.
this was a childhood favorite. mainly cause michael winslow x) also 14:02 tackleberry doesnt duck now because he knows that the gun cant fire again due to how it loads its rounds xD also also: i recommend watching the other movies in the series.
Michael Winslow's first movie role was a spot-on Jimi Hendrix impression (he sang the vocal AND guitar part), near the end of the classic Cheech & Chong film, Nice Dreams. Must watch!
Note: @14:00 When Tackleberry didn't duck, it wasn't because he wasn't afraid or just nuts; he was watching close enough to know Barbara didn't have a shell chambered when he turned around. While he should've still treated it like there was, particularly because of the reason why common shotguns are more prone to misfire, it's a pretty accurate depiction of someone that knowledgeable yet demonstrably trigger-happy. He was technically right, but also didn't follow basic gun safety. Lol
at 14:02, while all of the other officers ducked in fear that he would shoot again, the commanding officer did not duck for cover, because, when you think about this, the trainee with the shotgun did not pump the handle. even if he pulled the trigger again, it would not fire a shell, because the a new shell had yet to be loaded. while the personality of the commanding offer character is aggressive and him standing in defiance to the trainee is part of that character, it also reflects that he was the only one who knew the gun wasn't loaded
The song in The Blue Oyster Bar is the 1975 song "El Bimbo" by Gigliola Cinquettio. In traditional Italian "el bimbo" is a diminutive form of "el bambino" which means "little boy". I will leave it to your imagination how that term applies to the two rookies who stumble into that bar, twice. As I recall, 'The Boys' in Atlanta found this scene hilarious in the Eighties. They had a bad history with cops hassling their bars. I've been in a couple of leather bars, back then, as a hetero tag-along: This scene is only somewhat exaggerated.
My dad's friend was kinda like Winslow, but he's limited to musical instrument sounds. Everytime his friends were playing guitar he joined in with a 'fake' harmonica and it was really good too XD
We watched Police Academy alot when we were kids in the ‘80s. It was a very popular movie, also one that spawned many sequels that got progressively worse per usual in the ‘80s.

I wish they still made movies like they did back in the day …. All these awesome movies you react to …. I grew up watching…. Seen them all in theatres…
Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol is my personal favorite, but most of the whole series is awesome.
2:21. A masterclass of what not to shout whilst on the phone to your boss.
3:25 In the movie "ferris bueller day off", there is a homage to "Police Academy" based on this scene.
I can't believe how much your guys's channel has grown I subscribed to you guys when you guys only had 3,000 subscribers!
Yeah Hightower is a big dude and he was a former football player back in the 70s. I think he was a high draft pick back then. RIP Hightower
Being drafted #1 overall is pretty high ;)
@@grife3000 you are correct he was the number one draft pick and managed to win a super bowl championship💯💯💯👌
Been a while since Ive clicked on a reaction this fast 😜 LOVE that you guys are doing Police Academy
That totally makes sense! It's funny because he's one of the most memorable parts of the movie
@@NiceDudeMovieNightoh, definitely but the vast majority of his stuff is just him doing individual bits (like the "video game" thing, or when he gets knocked down the stairs because Fackler is clumsy).
Every time I see one of these videos, I feel like I'm watching a movie with a couple of friends and getting invested into it with eachother
Oh wow funny, same day and same reaction as Mary Cherry. Loved this movie as a kid btw. Still fun. I think I actually liked some of the sequels even more.
Yeah I saw that 😂 great minds think alike sometimes!
The Commandant is George Gaynes, you can see him in Mel Brooks' To Be Or Not To Be, one of my favorites.
14:01 Everyone takes cover. Except Tackleberry. 😄
Marion Ramsey, the actress who played Hooks actually wore padding under her uniform to appear bigger. She was actually pretty attractive in real life. She passed away in 2021 after a short illness.
The theater erupted when she had her moment. Glad to see these young guys react the same.
One of my favorite comedies . I grew up watching them with my cousins and we always had a blast. You guys should do at least the first 4 movies. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽great video like always 😊😊
This brings back so many memories. Used to watch this on VHS.
The recurring gag of the blue oyster cult bar through out the movies is great
I’m continually amazed by the movies you guys haven’t seen.
I hope you watch all of them :)
They're not equals, but they all contains something that makes me laugh a lot. A very good series
It's hard to believe this series hasn't been rebooted yet! Maybe it's for the best. This was on TV all the time in the 90s they even had an animated series. The movies vary in quality but I have fond memories nonetheles!
Don't give them ideas… you silence ! 🤫
You guys are a lot of fun to watch! Love this channel.
I am so glad you guys are getting sponsors! Keep up the good work Nice Dude's
7:38 “I love how the nerdy white guy…everything he touches turns into a slapstick comedy”
…well… funny you should mention that with what we now know to be the climax of the film….hahahahahaha
Always felt Steve Guttenberg was underrated. Seems a very likable guy too.
Yeah, but his stardom was only made possible by the Stonecutters. 😉
You guys are so fun to watch.
this was a childhood favorite. mainly cause michael winslow x)
also 14:02 tackleberry doesnt duck now because he knows that the gun cant fire again due to how it loads its rounds xD
also also: i recommend watching the other movies in the series.
Michael Winslow's first movie role was a spot-on Jimi Hendrix impression (he sang the vocal AND guitar part), near the end of the classic Cheech & Chong film, Nice Dreams. Must watch!
I definitely recommend continuing to watch the sequels, just don't go past 4.
You wanted to say: don't go past 6. 5 and 6 are also good. 7 is awful.
They are all fun movies, and the TV show
Tackleberry was my favorite character in the series. The actor was great and did a good job.
Police Academy 3 is the best one! Gotta watch it.
Lol
i love the pumpgun scene xD ... all jumping into savety accept "Tackleberry" because HE knows "Barbara" needs to Pump for the new round :D
at 14:02, while all of the other officers ducked in fear that he would shoot again, the commanding officer did not duck for cover, because, when you think about this, the trainee with the shotgun did not pump the handle. even if he pulled the trigger again, it would not fire a shell, because the a new shell had yet to be loaded.
while the personality of the commanding offer character is aggressive and him standing in defiance to the trainee is part of that character, it also reflects that he was the only one who knew the gun wasn't loaded
Michael Winslow also had picked his handcuffs that were supposed to have him secured to the chair when he’s introduced.
“Now, on this first sliiiiiiide!!!”😂😂
Lots of people used to have that blue oyster tune as a ringtone. So funny!
The same two guys also wrote Batchelor Party with Tom Hanks. And the latter writer, Pat Proft, he co-wrote the two Hot Shots movies.
It interesting on how many movies that came out in 1984 that keep on being recommended to most reaction channels on UA-cam.
Loved this series😂❤
The really tall guy(Hightower) is former NFL defensive lineman Bubba Smith.
