    You actually can do exposure control outside of focus, you can swipe up before starting your video and there’s +/- icon where you can manually set the exposure, then just leave it like that!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  11 місяців тому +2

      Unfortunately that only sets the exposure compensation and doesn’t lock your exposure though. So it’s still changing exposure while you’re shooting if the brightness of the scene changes.

    The iPhone 15 Pro Max with the BMC app has been a game changer for me. Outstanding results with ProRes 422LT Log to either external SSD when I am doing planned shoots or to a Thumb Drive when I am just out and about and see something I want to capture. BTW - the Big plus for me is that BMC app automatically generates a proxy file and saves it to the SSD/Thumbdrive. That streamlines my workflow into Davinci Resolve. Thanks for the LUTS - nice to have those options and looks.

    Bro, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro can take 12 bit colour depth photo when ProRaw turned on. But iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro can only take 10 bit colour depth photo when ProRaw turned on. Why ?
    I don't have an iPhone, so can anyone please let me know if you turn ProRaw in 12 megapixel instead of 48 megapixel, can it take 12 bit photos ?
    I'm curious about this because, 12-bit = 68 billion colours. But, 10-bit = 1.07 billion colours. That's a huge difference.
    If iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro cannot take 12 bit photos, that seems to be a huge downgrade !

    I wish there were some talk about how unusable this footage format is. Premiere Pro doesn’t play most iPhone footage at all without converting it into a format where you lose a lot of data. The fact that it looks great on my phone doesn’t really matter if I can’t edit it normally.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  10 місяців тому +2

      ProRes footage is known as one of the most useable playback media formats. So if you’re using ProRes it should be better for playback than typical h.264 or h.265.

    It’s so frustrating that you can’t just lock exposure without disabling af in the native camera app. Judging how long we’ve waited for the toggle for locking white balance we might get this in iPhone 21 :) But fair play to apple for adding this full fledged log profile. I find that it’s also best to underexpose the footage by about a stop shooting in apple log. Great video as always.

THE FUTURE is coming & you cannot stop a rolling tide of CHANGE. BRING IT ON, built in VFX, CGI,AI, Evolution, smaller devices that have lightening fast - powerful A24 chips, faster glass, better bokeh, LiDAR, full frame sensors, anamorphic selections, A dedicated full solution APP … you name it. Nice post mate! Clear to the point! Question regarding the proxy option of Log... (even though I think I know the answer...) When we shoot Log proxy, is not like when we have large video files, we "transform" them to proxy and then we can access the larger original files on Davinci to color grade right? We don't have that choice? Or we do...? thanks! cheers!

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  11 місяців тому

      Correct! Apple ProRes Proxy is just a file compression type, not an actual secondary file. It’s called that because it often gets used as that secondary smaller file to ProRes HQ. But if you’re shooting your primary file in ProRes Proxy, you’ll still get decent quality with smaller file sizes than the other ProRes options.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  11 місяців тому +1

      You had me checking to make sure I didn’t miss something haha. Unfortunately this still isn’t quite it. You can set the exposure compensation that way, but it will still fluctuate depending on where you point the camera. So you can set it to a good starting point, but then if someone with a black hoodie walks into frame, it will go “woah! Just got darker!” And brighten it up, keeping the whole frame to what it thinks is the exposure you want. Ideally, you would set and lock the exposure so it doesn’t fluctuate during your clip.

      This is super interesting! I haven't noticed dropped frames but I'm going to do more testing! Thanks for bringing this up.

    any tips on using the exposure compensation function on the iphone native camera app? like, some people recommend bringing it down anywhere between -.7 and -1.7 depending on the situation.

      I’ve heard this too, people saying to underexpose and which feels a bit counterintuitive to me as I typically expose to the right for log footage (while still protecting highlights). I need to do more testing before I’d feel comfortable giving a solid answer though.
