I’m done with eBay - no place for small sellers

  • Been buying and selling on eBay for 22 years. After having 210 comics stolen by very impatient buyer, I’ve ended all listings and I’m done. If people can file a claim before the item is even delivered in a reasonable time and get their money back despite documentation - what’s the point? I spend so much time listing stuff then it either doesn’t sell, is sold at low price, or now add stolen to the list. It’s not worth the trouble. eBay use to be a joy to buy and sell. The fees are ridiculous for small sellers and they hide your listings if you don’t pay to promote them. It’s not fun. No protection for small sellers - they don’t want us.

Buyer got comics. Got them for free. But eBay paid for it. I’ve not contacted eBay about it. But I’m not out the money after an actual human reviewed the case (this was before the comics arrived).

My final nail was a set of cards I sent to a guy who claimed non-receipt. Meanwhile they were returned to me because he gave me an invalid address. I re-shipped at MY expense, he received them, and then ebay gave him a refund. Maddening! Now I only use Atomic Mall and Whatnot. Will never go back to Fleabay.

Joseph, Ebay has no regard for free enterprise and competition. Ebay caters to those who are in the big business and could care less about us the small sellers. #1'being charged fee on full price including shipping.
    Shipping is not $$ gained.

I call, they reopened the case and still side with the buyer. I then called every hour to argue with them, long story short they paid me the $400 but the buyer also got to keep their refund. I've been selling on eBay for a bit over a decade, and I've noticed a steady decline over the last few years. I no longer list more items than my shop allowance, because I don't want to pay the extra fees for nothing. Instead, I'm doing what I can to attract customers to my Ebid shop, where the fee structure's better and the management don't play these stupid games. I sell on multiple platforms, and it's got to the point where I see eBay as the "loss leader" department. Every time I sell an item on eBay, I enclose a flyer promoting my Ebid shop and advising the customer that I've got a lot more stuff listed there at lower prices. It's going to take a long time to build up the sort of traffic on Ebid that I used to get on eBay, but it'll be worth it if I can eliminate my dependence on a platform that keeps moving the goalposts.

I'm a full time eBay seller and just had my first actual, provable scam take place last month. I had purchased an overstock pallet of dehumidifiers. All were new in box and I had 36 of them. The next to last one I sold, the buyer received it and quickly asked for a return the same day. I have 30 day returns, so I had to accept. The buyer quickly left me positive feedback saying how much they love the unit. I thought to myself, "well, if you love it so much, why don't you keep it?!". Well, that's exactly what they did. The box I received back was the original box, but inside was this disgusting, wet, mold and sticker covered dehumidifier from a different brand. I was incensed!
Now, I never call eBay, but I did in this case. The non English speaking rep told me that I had to refund, but because I was top rated, I could withhold up to 50%. He tried to make it sound like that was some special favor he was doing for me even though we get that option on all returns. Still though, this was a scam and I wasn't about to refund anything. I reached out to eBay for Business on Facebook, which I should have done first. I made the complaint initially, but then it dawned on me. Every one of those dehumidifiers weighted 27 pounds. The one that was sent back to me, with shipping purchased through ebay, was 35 pounds. I suggested they check the USPS records since they weigh everything to confirm this discrepancy which proved he didn't send back the same item. Support said I didn't have to pay, but that they would cover the refund. Argh! On one hand I'm glad I got off the hook, but on the other, this will just encourage the pathetic thieves to continue scamming people. Ebay needs to grow a backbone and stand by their sellers. I've been on since 2000 and still have a 100% feedback score and do 6 figures in sales a year. If I say I've been scammed, I've been scammed.

I had a similar situation with Amazon. The shipment was delayed due to USPS (DeJoy's Folly) problems but was still en route when the buyer filed a claim against me. I informed the customer that the book would eventually arrive, but he wanted his $60 back, and Amazon gave it to him. Of course the book arrived shortly after Amazon took the money from my account to give the customer. If one wishes to sell online this is an example of the problems one encounters. Amazon (and based on this video, EBAY) do not back up their sellers when it comes to problems beyond the seller's control.

If YOU, as a seller, aren't (also) paying to promote an item, this means that the item ends up not being seen. Items that fail to show up in a search aren't participating in the market enough to provide any competition, and so they don't help to reduce/stabilize prices.
The end result? eBay makes tons of money through exorbitant-but-unnecessary fees, sellers are coerced and/or ripped off, buyers pay inflated prices (over false demand from an apparent limited supply), and the resultant perception of high market values add to inflation.
eBay is a destructively greedy scourge.

Also I look at it like I get the things I sell for very little and make hundreds to thousands of percent profit over cost of goods so who cares if there is the very rare bad transaction. I sold on there from 99 to around 2003. It was fun. Everyone was a small seller. Buy it now was just beginning. There was no back stabbing from other sellers or buyers. Just friendly competition. I had a few minor instances but I always paid extra to make it so the buyer upon arrival at their address had to sign they received the item. The post office then forwarded me the signed receipt. With a signed receipt from the buyer when the item arrived there were no scams. I had nothing but positive feedback and gave the same. Commercialization was only beginning back then. Shipping was cheap through the post office. It was fun until commercialization (stores) and the beginning of free shipping I was unwilling to do began. So I stopped selling never to return. Besides now the IRS has it's hands in every transaction and a 1099 has to be completed at tax time. At a thrift store nearby I recently talked to a husband and wife Ebay seller team. I recognized them right off. They had quit their jobs to sell full time selling stuff they find at thrifts and yard sales. The guy said they were doing really good. I asked him about the 1099. He said they had not looked in to that yet and had no clue how much tax they had to pay in. I just smiled and walked away. They will get bent over. Anyone knowing they have to pay taxes on every penny of their Ebay sales might as well set some cash aside from each sale they make for the tax man. My guess is those two had quite an eye opener when they did their returns.

I’ve been reporting the income previously before I started getting 1099s so I was prepared. Been getting 1099s from Google since 2011 and the last several years on PayPal. US government is changing the limit from $20000 to $600 so a lot of people will be in for a surprise. Without writing off stuff the tax would be substantial for some

I am sorry to hear about your experience. As a small seller I am very strategic in what I source and list. I think the days of listing everything and waiting for it to sell are over because of the increased cost of inventory, handling, and waiting for it to sell. I can tell ya are passionate and that is a good thing to have. I think as small sellers we need to adapt and be flexible to survive. I try not to become involved with my items because they are just profit to me. I obviously don't want to loose money but we are business owners and these experiences are the cons. I think it is a good idea to delete your listings and just evaluate each and every listing to determine if it's a keeper or donate basically doing a housecleaning. Good luck!!

There are few things I learned how to best avoid bad scammers: pay little extra to get your item hand delivered if its an expensive item , if a buyer has 0-5 reviews it’s almost always a red flag to send your item to them but, set a monthly goal you willing to se be gone for ever (100$) but list enough items to make up for that loss if it happens not all buyers are scammers , most seller sites are big corporate monster it’s sellers job to tame and figure out what that monster needs to work for you. Don’t give up evolve. Good luck

Like everything else, eBay has become more than it was ever designed to be. These behemoth companies have become so powerful and so faceless that it’s impossible to deal with them.
I’ve listed items that rarely get views and, unless you pay for a promotion, they will never sell!
And, as for buying from eBay. It’s become incredibly difficult to find anything listed for a reasonable price. It’s become a place for professional eBayers to flog their overpriced items.

How the Fck can someone sell and pay all expenses, including every possible fee they can gouge me for, and despite my feedback I am still literally funding the whole thing, while they took their fees directly from my bank account. I am sorry you have gone through this! What a jerk. I am a newer seller on EBay and I am about ready to get out also. I definitely don’t feel there is enough support for small sellers.

I'm watching this a year after it was uploaded. I just started reselling. I watched A LOT of the videos on here, joined some reddits, long before I listed my first item. It sounds like the buyer ran a scam on those comics. They knew what they were doing, they took advantage of eBay's policies. When they stated that you were taking it personally, that was the tip off.

So sad what's happened to eBay. Take bigger percentage for seller fees. Promo fees and the postage costs in UK are very high. The customer support for eBay is terrible. A chat bot merry go around. They open up claims if an order is a couple of days late. Then eBay freezes your finds so I have no funds to post the other orders. They do not manage troll feedback either. Gone from 10/10 to 1/10.

Ebay hates sellers , the new scamming sellers and the ones that have sold for years . The same treatment

Sorry to hear about your quitting Ebay. I had your store saved for notices of things on sale but I haven't received any notices since I bought the Deathstroke the Terminator comic lot from you two years ago, hadn't realized that it had been so long ago! I also couldn't search your store name as I know you as "Bricktsar" & "Traintsar" and the * in jaabo*s always slips my mind. The Ebay app also doesn't do you any favors in the way to search for stores by name.

Yes, I hate how you can't search Ebay by store name. I can never find sellers unless I use their link to their store. That is very annoying.

On my account, 1052 transactions, as a buyer / seller, only 55 items sold. 100% positive feedbacks, buyers don’t give a S@$& about leaving a nice review, after selling for a couple months Im done with eBay. It’s like swimming against the waves. I really understand your frustration bud.

funny I remember using a scanner to scan coins and a bunch of other stuff for listing. I also believe some of this is a natural progression. More people are taking this serious now days and selling on a big scale, which oversaturates markets. So yeah it is much harder to be that 25 item store. All this before factoring in some of the details you hit on, the Ebay side of things.

I had a seller on ebay switch out a set on me. A cheaper set. Expected Mr to keep it sealed. Ebay gave me a partial refund. I've sold on mercari. It's a little better. Better than Ebay for sure.
